One cornerback for the Eagles in every round of the 2023 NFL draft

We’re looking at one cornerback for the Philadelphia Eagles in every round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Philadelphia didn’t make any huge splashes in the free agent market, but GM Howie Roseman did find a few valuable pieces to pad the depth on the roster.

The Eagles’ free-agent signings earned one-year deals with the potential for a long marriage if they can help the franchise return to the Super Bowl.

Philadelphia has the NFL’s top duo at the cornerback position and added Greedy Williams in free agency, but will Howie Roseman look to add even more depth?

We’re reviewing one draft prospect to watch in every round.

1 cornerback for the Vikings for every round of the 2023 NFL draft

With the NFL Draft just a little over a week away, here is one cornerback for the Minnesota Vikings in every round of the Draft.

At the start of the offseason, the Minnesota Vikings had a clear priority: to address the cornerback position. They released Cam Dantzler and allowed Patrick Peterson to leave in free agency. Even after signing Byron Murphy Jr., the Vikings still needs additional players in the cornerback room

Fortunately, the upcoming NFL Draft has one of the deepest cornerback classes in recent memory. Let’s take a look at some potential fits for the Vikings at the cornerback position in every round of the draft.

NFL Draft: The second annual All Forno Team

For the second-consecutive season, here is the 2023 All-Forno team of @TheRealForno’s favorite draft prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Welcome to the second annual All-Forno Team!

Last year, I introduced the first rendition of the All-Forno team with six players. They were my favorites in the draft class and I have brought the team back for the second year.

This list isn’t about what prospects are the best. That has no bearing on making the All-Forno team. It’s about more than that. These are the players I had the most fun watching this cycle, and they all vary a little bit from each other.

Here is the 2023 All-Forno team.

ESPN identifies 5 draft prospects as heavily linked to Cowboys

Cowboys fans have been hearing 4 of the names for a while (for good reason, it turns out). The 5th may be a surprise at a position of need. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Crunch time is coming for 32 NFL draft rooms. While it’s anyone’s guess which way the Cowboys staffers, coaches, and scouts are actually leaning with their picks, there’s still two weeks for the rest of the world to make their best prognostications.

ESPN asked its NFL Nation reporters to get specific about the teams they cover. For the Cowboys, who have a track record of landing future superstars with their first-round selections, Todd Archer was asked to name names about who would fit that bill for the team in 2023.

Then the network went a little deeper, also asking its analysts what they’re hearing about other prospects.

Their insights may shed a little light on what fans can expect when the Cowboys are on the clock.

NFL Draft: 12 mid/late-round prospects that could be steals for the Eagles

We’re looking at 12 mid to late-round NFL draft prospects that could end up being steals for the Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles have had success hitting on late-round picks in the past few years, with Jordan Mailata (2018), Kenneth Gainwell (2021), Jack Driscoll (2020), Quez Watkins (2020), Josh Sweat (2018), Nathan Gerry, Jalen Mills, and Jason Kelce being some of the late round picks who’ve played in a Super Bowl.

The 2023 NFL draft offers Philadelphia another opportunity to reload in the late rounds.

The expectation is that GM Howie Roseman will move around the board, acquiring draft assets and a large group of undrafted free agents.

With the draft just three weeks away, we’re taking an early look at 12 mid to late-round prospects that could end up as steals for the Eagles.

Cam Smith, Darius Rush and an SEC cornerback history lesson

How South Carolina CBs Cam Smith and Darius Rush might echo another set of SEC CB teammates from a decade ago

The South Carolina Gamecocks have two starting cornerbacks in the NFL draft class of 2023. Both Cam Smith and Darius Rush are worthy Day 2 prospects, with Smith potentially a late first-rounder.

Smith is the more accomplished and heralded prospect. He earned some All-SEC honors and was a fixture on preseason watch lists and first-round mock draft projections. Rush didn’t garner such widespread acclaim or respect amongst college football observers or draft analysts, not after switching from wide receiver after he arrived in Columbia.

Yet there is a growing consensus that Rush might be the better NFL player than his more renowned running mate. It’s far from a consensus, but Rush is starting to climb up in mock draft projections while Smith fades back a bit.

2023 NFL draft big board: Cornerbacks

It’s not the first time we’ve seen an SEC school have two cornerbacks in the same draft where the lesser-accomplished college player might be the better NFL prospect. It happened a decade ago at Mississippi State with Johnthan Banks and Darius Slay.

Like Smith, Banks was an accomplished collegiate cornerback with a lot of polish to his game. Back in 2012, he was a fixture on preseason watch lists for awards and first-round projections for the draft the following spring. Slay, meanwhile, was seen as something of an upstart, a more athletic but raw prospect who didn’t consistently live up to his potential in Starkville.

In the 2013 NFL draft, Slay wound up being selected first on his athletic promise and scheme-diverse skills. He was the No. 36 overall pick, taken by the Detroit Lions. Banks slid to No. 43 overall and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being pigeonholed as a more athletically limited, zone-only cornerback.

As NFL rookies, the collegiate pecking order prevailed. Banks started all 16 games, picked off three passes and played well enough to be looked at as a capable, if limited, long-term starter. Slay played his way out of the lineup with frequent blown assignments and lapses in coverage.

The key was the patience the Lions showed in their investment. They knew Slay wasn’t quite ready for primetime as a prospect. Despite his rocky rookie campaign, they didn’t throw out the baby with the dirty bathwater. They leaned on veteran Rashean Mathis to help bring Slay along, and it finally clicked. Boy howdy did it click!

Slay emerged as one of the NFL’s best cover corners and defensive playmakers over the last decade. He’s earned Pro Bowl nods in five of the last six seasons and continues to excel at 32 years old for the Eagles.

Meanwhile, Banks quickly faded. Being more NFL-ready to start the career didn’t equate to longevity. The Buccaneers bailed on him after he played his way in and out of the lineup beyond his second year. Banks bounced around several teams, even spending some time as Slay’s backup in Detroit, before washing out of the NFL by the end of 2017.

Flash forward to 2023. Smith is widely tagged as a fit strictly for zone-oriented coverage schemes, a label that proved true with Banks. Rush is rising in part because of his projectable ability in either man or zone schemes. Broader appeal creates rising stock, just as it did for Slay.

It’s not a perfectly analogous situation. Smith is a much better athlete than Banks was based on Combine testing, not to mention the eye test. While Rush’s stock is rising, it would be a stunner to see him selected ahead of Smith, whereas Slay going ahead of Banks was pretty widely expected back in 2013.

But don’t be surprised if Rush winds up being the better NFL player of the Gamecocks duo. The Bulldogs from a decade ago provide a very realistic historical precedent.

2023 NFL mock draft: Post-free agency 1st-round projections feature QB movement in top 3

Vikings trade out of round one, take quarterback in CBS mock

The Minnesota Vikings trade out of the first round and take their quarterback of the future Hendon Hooker.

The Minnesota Vikings have a myriad of options at their disposal when it comes to the 23rd overall pick. What made the latest mock draft from Josh Edwards of CBS Sports so interesting was he accomplished two of them.

Edwards has the Vikings trading down with the Pittsburgh Steelers at 32nd overall and picking up their third-round pick at 80th overall. In turn, the Vikings selected Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker

The Volunteer’s quarterback is a very divisive prospect due to the nature of the offense he ran. Plus, he is 25 years old and recovering from a torn ACL suffered in November. He llikely won’t play at all during the 2023 season and that is a cause for concern.

With the two third-round picks, Wilson has the Vikings taking South Carolina CB Darius Rush at 80th overall and LSU wide receiver Kayshon Boutte at 87th overall.

Vikings 2023 7 round mock draft 8.0: Draft defense early & often

In the eighth edition of the Vikings seven-round mock draft, @TheRealForno looks explores going defense with the first four picks.

The Minnesota Vikings have a lot of different ways they can go in the NFL draft. There will be some discussion on what needs are most important but the Vikings can address most of them through both free agency and the NFL draft.

I have now done seven mock drafts for the Vikings this offseason and they all have taken a slightly different turn each time. This one has the Vikings trading back and focusing on the defense with the first four picks.

South Carolina Gamecocks pro day: Cam Smith, Zacch Pickens bulk up

South Carolina Gamecocks pro day: CB Cam Smith and DT Zacch Pickens each added some much-needed weight

South Carolina held its annual pro day for prospective NFL players on Monday. All 32 teams made the trek to Columbia to check out the Gamecocks’ prospects for the 2023 NFL draft.

The Gamecocks have several draft-worthy players who went through testing. Most notable is CB Cam Smith, who projects as a top 50 overall talent.

2023 NFL Draft: Cam Smith scouting report

Smith weighed in three pounds heavier on Monday than he did at the NFL Scouting Combine. The jump from 180 pounds to 183 might not seem like much, but NFL teams wanted Smith to get bigger to become more comfortable with his outlook. Smith didn’t do any of the athletic metric testing but did work with the other DBs in position drills on the field.

Getting bigger is important for Smith, who mostly played the slot CB role at South Carolina.

“A lot of people value that inside position, but I need to get bigger because most of the time you’re more of a linebacker, not really a nickel,” Smith said via Emily Adams of the Greenville News. “I’m eating healthy options, but really a load of it. I do some shakes — I get two shakes a day that are like 1,300 calories so each day I’m getting like a pound off of that.”

Fellow CB Darius Rush also chose to stand on his NFL Scouting Combine testing numbers. Rush clocked a 4.36 40-yard dash time at the combine. He is generally projected in the draft’s middle rounds.

Defensive tackle Zacch Pickens, a Senior Bowl standout, also elected not to try and improve upon his combine testing. Pickens weighed in at 298 pounds, up seven from his time in Indianapolis two weeks ago. That’s an important jump for a player who has questions about his ability to anchor on the defensive interior.

Vikings 2023 7 round mock draft 7.0: Prioritize wide receiver

What would a Vikings mock draft look like after reloading the defense in free agency and prioritizing wide receiver twice?

The Minnesota Vikings have a lot of different ways they can go in the NFL draft. There will be some discussion on what needs are most important but the Vikings can address most of them through both free agency and the NFL draft.

I have now done six mock drafts for the Vikings this offseason and they all have taken a slightly different turn each time. This one has the Vikings trading back and focusing on the defense.
