ESPN takes a look at how Billy Napier’s rebuilding process is going at Florida

The Gators are slowly rebuilding through recruiting and filling positions of need first.

Recently, ESPN took a look at how new head coaches are choosing to rebuild the programs they take over, and [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s first go around with the Florida Gators is an easy case study to look at it given the school’s history and membership in the perenially strong Southeastern Conference.

Identifying positions of need is the first step in ESPN’s assessment, and the list is unsurprisingly long. Running back, wide receiver, offensive line, defensive line and linebacker it reads. Only two of those holes (running back and offensive line) would be filled in the first six months of Napier’s tenure, though.

He had just weeks to scramble and piece together a recruiting class that had prospects jumping ship left and right. Napier ultimately snagged five-star safety, [autotag]Kamari Wilson[/autotag], from Georgia’s grasp and also landed four-star linebacker [autotag]Shemar James[/autotag]. Four-star running back [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] is another nice addition, but the group is still considered weak in a conference that routinely boasts the nation’s top recruiting classes.

New coach Billy Napier has his hands full trying to remake this roster as the previous staff went 6-7 last season with lackluster recruiting over the past few classes. The Gators finished the 2022 recruiting cycle ranked No. 32 overall, last in the SEC.

Napier then turned to the transfer portal, bringing in a trio of offensive players that already know his scheme. [autotag]Montrell Johnson[/autotag], the Sun Belt Conference’s Freshman of the Year, is sure to add to the run game behind four-star Louisiana transfer [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] and fellow interior offensive lineman [autotag]Kamryn Waites[/autotag].

Still, it’s been hard to fill the holes left in the receiving core by [autotag]Jacob Copeland[/autotag] (Maryland) and [autotag]Kemore Gamble[/autotag] (UCF). The transfer portal, in general, has hurt more than it’s helped this offseason. Sure, guys like [autotag]Ricky Pearsall[/autotag] and [autotag]Jalen Kimber[/autotag] have a chance to make an impact early, but it doesn’t replace the departing starting talent. Not to mention those who have graduated or turned pro.

The coaches lost quite a bit to the portal and weren’t able to fill every hole… Defensive linemen [autotag]Zachary Carter[/autotag], [autotag]Antonio Valentino[/autotag] and [autotag]Daquan Newkirk[/autotag] are all gone as well, so the defensive staff has some work to do in the front seven to replace the production they had from last season.

It’s not the total overhaul some programs have seen, such as LSU or Oklahoma. In fact, Napier is taking a fairly traditional approach to rebuilding the Gators considering the modern game’s transfer rules. Landing a strong recruiting class in 2023 seems to be the path he’s headed down, but there are questions about whether or not Florida can keep up in the NIL space with some of the nation’s top programs.

As ESPN suggests, there’s still plenty of work to do for Florida to be “rebuilt,” but Napier is addressing the issues one by one. That attentiveness is what got him the gig, and he’s been successful in the past.

Florida earns crystal ball prediction for this transfer portal DL

Will Florida be adding some depth soon from the transfer portal?

247Sports’ Blake Alderman logged a crystal ball prediction in favor of the Florida Gators for Maryland transfer [autotag]Darrell Jackson[/autotag] on Thursday.

Jackson and his mother will be in Gainesville for the Gators’ Orange and Blue game and things have been trending in the right direction since he entered the portal. Alderman’s crystal ball is the lone projection for the Gators on 247Sports as of now and it’s unclear how many other schools have pursued him to the degree UF has.

Gators head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] noted Florida’s lack of depth in a press conference earlier this week before laying out a plan to be “very aggressive” in the portal. [autotag]Dan Mullen[/autotag] took the same approach last year bringing in [autotag]Tyrone Truesdell[/autotag], [autotag]Antonio Valentino[/autotag] and [autotag]Daquan Newkirk[/autotag] to fill out the defensive line.

Napier’s staff worked quickly to get in touch with Jackson, so he figures to be a high priority on the recruiting board. They already seem to be in a good spot with him and there are rumors that Jackson would like to return to Florida after graduating from Gadsden County High.

If the process lingers on, the Gators plan on bringing him in for an official visit.

247Sports ranked Jackson a three-star recruit out of high school and has yet to give him a transfer designation. He was the No. 90 defensive lineman on the 247Sports composite. He started in all 13 games for the Terrapins as a true freshman, totaling 22 tackles throughout the season.

Florida defensive tackle Lamar Goods enters NCAA transfer portal

Florida redshirt sophomore DT Lamar Goods plans to enter the portal after only registering a single tackle during his career.

Florida redshirt sophomore defensive tackle [autotag]Lamar Goods[/autotag] announced on Instagram Friday that he plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal with spring practice set to conclude next week with the Orange and Blue Game.

“I wanna start by thanking everyone at the University of Florida and that I appreciate and care for all that you have done for me,” Goods wrote. “But after long and hard talks with my family I have decided to enter my name in the transfer portal. I am excited to see where this next chapter in my life takes my academic and football career but will always be proud that I was a gator thank you GATOR NATION.”

He played sparingly during his career with Florida, recording only a single tackle. During spring practices, the media has seen Goods leave early on multiple occasions for reasons unknown.

The Gators are looking for contributors at the defensive tackle position beside a player named [autotag]Gervon Dexter[/autotag] this spring. Former head coach [autotag]Dan Mullen[/autotag] and defensive line coach [autotag]David Turner[/autotag] brought in graduate transfers [autotag]Daquan Newkirk[/autotag], [autotag]Antonio Valentino[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyrone Truesdell[/autotag] as a quick fix to supplement their struggles to recruit the position.

It’s a problem new head coach [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and defensive line coach [autotag]Sean Spencer[/autotag] will have to address via the transfer portal themselves after spring ball wraps up and new names enter the portal.

Transfer Tracker: How former Tigers are foing at their new schools

Here’s what these former Tigers are up to…

The transfer portal was busier than ever this offseason and Auburn’s roster saw plenty of turnover.

Auburn added nine players but saw 14 players leave the program for a variety of reasons.  Some of these players have become important contributors at their new school while others are still looking for a chance to prove themselves.

Here’s a look at how the former Tigers are fairing at their new schools.

Here’s where the Gators defensive line ranks in the SEC

The Gators defense is looking to recover after a rough 2020. The defensive line’s health will be key to the team’s success.

Florida’s defensive line has drummed up some excitement during fall training camp, and The Athletic has them fifth in the Southeastern Conference in a recent analysis of the unit.

The Gators enter the season with a four-player rotation of Zachary Carter, Gervon Dexter, Daquan Newkirk and Antonio Valentino. Carter opted to come back to the team despite being NFL-ready, and Newkirk and Valentino came over through the transfer portal with Power 5 experience. Dexter, who played in all 12 games as a true freshman last season, is looking to make a big leap in his fourth season of organized football.

[lawrence-related id=49585,48560]

The concern lies in the unit’s depth. Beyond those four, the options are mostly young players who still need development to compete with SEC offensive linemen. Carter had to fill in up the middle last year and it hurt his production. That adds more pressure to Valentino and Newkirk to perform but the two have impressed in fall so far.

Staying healthy will be key. Any one of the four men going down with a serious injury may cause the defensive end rotation to fall apart, which The Athletic describes as the “worst-case scenario” for Florida. The “best-case scenario” is if “Carter capitalizes on his all-conference potential, Dexter becomes a monster, and the transfers deliver career-best production.”

Ahead of Florida are Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia and LSU. The Tigers are in a comparable situation to the Gators as they look to bounce back from a rough 2020.

Daquan Newkirk provides SEC experience for the front 7

Newkirk has seen action in 30 SEC games over the last three years, and he should be a plug-and-play starter at defensive tackle.

Name: Daquan Newkirk

Number: 44

Position: Defensive Tackle

Class: Redshirt Senior

Height: 6’3″

Weight: 308 pounds

Hometown: Orlando, Florida

High School: The First Academy

Previous School: Auburn

Twitter: @Daquan_Newkirk

2020 statistics:

TOT SOLO AST SACK FF
28 8 20 1.5 0

Overview:

An Orlando native, Newkirk began his college career at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where he played during the 2017 season. His efforts that year made him a four-star JUCO prospect and the No. 14 overall JUCO player, per the 247Sports Composite. He finished the season with 48 tackles (nine of them for loss)

He was heavily recruited by Auburn, with whom he eventually signed. His first season with the Tigers in 2018, he appeared in eight games but with limited production, finishing with seven total tackles. He saw more action as a redshirt sophomore in 2019, but despite playing in 12 games his tackle total dropped to five.

His most productive season, by far, came in 2020, when he appeared in 10 games and totaled 28 tackles and 1.5 sacks. In 30 career games with the Tigers, Newkirk totaled 40 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

He entered the transfer portal after the shortened 2020 season, and he landed with a Gators team in need of help on the interior of the defensive line heading into 2021. Alongside fellow transfer Antonio Valentino from Penn State, he’s expected to be a plug-and-play starter at defensive tackle this season.

These Florida football players made CBS Sports’ list of instant impact transfers

Coach Dan Mullen proved why he is the NCAA transfer portal king again this offseason. CBS Sports thinks these three can help UF to the CFP.

One of Florida head coach Dan Mullen’s greatest strengths besides being a quarterback whisperer is that he’s an NCAA transfer portal wizard.

He has landed several gems from the portal like wide receivers Van Jefferson, Trevon Grimes and Justin Shorter. He’s also beefed up his backfield and pass rush with the likes of Brenton Cox Jr., Jonathan Greenard and Lorenzo Lingard.

CBS Sports’ college football team took turns tabbing new transfers that could help their new program make the College Football Playoff.

David Cobb listed the Gators new defensive linemen Antonio Shelton and Daquan Newkirk immediately. Here’s a glimpse of what he wrote.

Defensive tackles rarely generate headlines, and the focus entering this season is rightly on Florida’s secondary and new starting quarterback Emory Jones. But the Gators would have been in a tight spot at defensive tackle if they hadn’t snagged two proven veterans from the portal. Shelton and Newkirk will help Florida’s defense improve, and that could bring the CFP into play for this team.

Former defensive tackles Kyree Campbell and Tedarrell Slaton left Florida in dire straights when they declared for the NFL draft. Not many defensive tackles saw meaningful snaps beside Campbell, Slaton and freshman Gervon Dexter. Cobb believes these new additions could potentially be upgrades to Campbell and Slaton.

Shelton racked up 3.5 sacks in seven games last season for Penn State, and  Newkirk collected 28 tackles and three for a loss for Auburn. Both players should make an immediate impact for the Gators this season.

Auburn Spring Practice: Can the Tigers find a dominant defensive line?

Here are the Tigers projected to fill the positions on the defensive line.

The last few months have been chaotic for every aspect of Auburn football, especially the Tigers’ defensive line. New defensive line coach Nick Eason comes to Auburn after spending a season coaching the Cincinnati Bengals’ d-line. Eason steps in to replace Tracy Rocker who left after just 11 days for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The hardest task that lies ahead for Eason and DC Derek Mason is replacing two of the line’s biggest contributors from last season in defensive end Big Kat Bryant and defensive tackle Daquan Newkirk.

Bryant left Auburn to originally follow Kevin Steele to Tennessee but finally ended up at UCF with former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn. He finished last season with 15 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 interception. Newkirk transferred to Florida and finished last season with 28 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Mason typically runs a hybrid defense that alternates between three and four man fronts. Here are the Tigers projected to fill the positions on the defensive line:

Defensive tackle:

Todd Van Emst/AU Athletics

Dre Butler 6’5, 304 lb junior

  • 2020 stats: 14 tackles, 1 sack
  • Butler transferred to Auburn from Independence Community College in Kansas where he recorded 66 tackles, 22.0 TFL, and 11.5 sacks

Lee Hunter 6’4, 300 lb freshman

  • Senior statistics at Blount High School (Mobile, AL): 54 tackles, 20 TFL, 4.5 sacks
  • 4-star recruit with high praise for his strength and athleticism along all aspects of the line

Jay Hardy 6’4, 300 lb redshirt freshman

  • 2020 stats: early season leg injury sidelined Hardy throughout season, saw action in one game against Northwestern
  • Instinctually a very solid player with quick hands and big upside but will need to step up athletically this spring to fill the role

Zykeivous Walker 6’4, 266 lb sophomore

  • 2020 stats: solid option for Auburn at DE, finished season with 14 tackles and 1 sack
  • Powerful and quick for his size, has the versatility and skillset to play on the edge and the interior

Marquis Burks 6’3, 312 lb senior

  • 2020 stats: 4 tackles, 1 sack
  • Two years of experience at Iowa City Community College

Defensive end:

Todd Van Emst/AU Athletics

Colby Wooden 6’4 268 lb sophomore

  • 2020 stats: 42 tackles, 3 sacks, 9.5 TFL
  • His 9.5 TFL ranked third best in the SEC and he finished the season on the SEC All-Freshman team

Zykeivous Walker 6’4 266 lb sophomore

  • 2020 stats: 14 tackles, 1 sack
  • As mentioned before, his versatility is great and he’s a proven pass rusher

Jaren Handy 6’5 252 lb junior

  • 2020 stats: 3 tackles, 1 sack
  • Reserve DE for the Tigers in 2020, plays aggressively and runs well in pursuit

This former four-star recruit committed to the Gators as a transfer

Florida added another defensive tackle by way of the transfer portal, this time snagging DaQuan Newkirk from the Auburn Tigers.

[jwplayer 32Ij8PgD]

Former Auburn defensive tackle DaQuan Newkirk has committed to play for the Florida Gators in 2021 as a grad transfer. Newkirk broke the news himself in an announcement from his personal Twitter account.

Newkirk has had an injury-troubled college career, but 2020 was his most productive season since enrolling at Auburn in 2018. He started the entire 10-game slate of the Tigers’ schedule and recorded 28 tackles, including 1.5 sacks. He’s an adequate starting-caliber tackle and will slot nicely next to fellow transfer Antonio Shelton, who the Gators snagged out of the transfer portal on January 7th.

Newkirk was touted as one of the best JUCO recruits in the nation when he came out of Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. in 2018. A native of Orlando, Florida, he now stands at 6-foot-3-inches tall and weighs 317 pounds. As a grad transfer, he’ll only have one season of eligibility at Florida.

“I wanted to go out with a bang for my last season,” said Newkirk to GatorsTerritory. “So I told myself, ‘why not do it at home?'”

The Gators will undoubtedly appreciate his experience and ability to battle SEC offensive linemen. Tedarrell Slaton and Kyree Campbell, the core of the team’s defensive interior in 2020, are both expected to seek homes in the NFL next season. That left Dan Mullen in a tough spot, making it no surprise that he turned to the transfer market for a little help up the middle.

Two key Auburn defensive linemen enter the transfer portal

Auburn has lost two key defensive linemen in Big Kat Bryant and Daquan Newkirk to the NCAA transfer portal.

Shocking news out of Auburn as two of the Tigers’ top defensive linemen are entering the transfer portal.

On Sunday, Big Kat Bryant and Daquan Newkirk announced that they will be both looking to play elsewhere in the 2021 season and taking advantage of their extra year of eligibility.

As a senior in 2020, Bryant made 17 total tackles with three sacks and three tackles for a loss.

Newkirk recorded 28 tackles, three tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks.
