Bengals injury updates on D’Ante Smith and Chris Evans

Bengals injury updates on the two losses from joint practices.

Cincinnati Bengals offensive tackle D’Ante Smith and running back Chris Evans suffered significant injuries during joint practices with the Chicago Bears this week.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Smith will miss the entire 2024 season with a patellar injury.

Evans, according to Jordan Schultz, suffered a torn patellar tendon and will also miss the season.

This matches the vibe after initial reports said that both players left practice with the Bears on carts with air casts on their legs. A downpour hit the outside joint session and muddied the field as the session proceeded.

These developments leave the Bengals dangerously thin at both spots. Offensive tackle is an emergency situation at this point, though, with Amarius Mims sidelined for a vague amount of time and Trent Brown already battling a new injury.

Given that, it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Bengals make a move for an offensive tackle. Rookies like Elijah Collins, at least, will get a chance to make the final roster at running back behind Chase Brown and Zack Moss.

Bengals: D’Ante Smith, Chris Evans leave joint practice with Bears due to injuries

Two major-sounding injuries for the Bengals.

Cincinnati Bengals practice against the Chicago Bears was on a media blackout on Thursday, so word of injuries didn’t go public until after the entire session had finished.

It turns out the Bengals suffered two major injuries during the joint practices, with Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reporting that offensive tackle D’Ante Smith and running back Chris Evans left the field on carts with air casts on their legs.

The injury setbacks are big news for both positions. Tackle depth has already been seriously strained with the injury to first-round rookie Amarius Mims.

At running back, Evans had a shot to push Trayveon Willaims as the third back behind Zack Moss and Chase Brown. If he misses serious time, rookies such as Elijah Collins will get a chance to earn those roster spots.

Cincinnati Bengals rookie guard D’Ante Smith will head to injured reserve so he can undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

It’s a stunning turn of events for the fourth-round rookie, who just earlier this week looked like he’d get his first career start while fellow rookie Jackson Carman sat inactive on the COVID list.

Fast forward to Friday, Smith missed two days of practice with a knee injury and Carman has been re-activated and cleared to start against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Zac Taylor confirmed the injury and surgery, per ESPN’s Ben Baby.

Smith, a promising high-upside prospect who might just have starter potential, will be out through at least next month’s bye week.

For Week 6, if Carman can’t go for some reason, it will be sixth-rounder Trey Hill making the start at right guard.

Bengals rookie D’Ante Smith got reps at guard during training camp practice

A Bengals rookie got to flash his versatility as he attempts to make the team.

The Cincinnati Bengals continue to search for the best possible starting five along the offensive line while also securing a strong core depth chart.

Saturday proved that well enough with the handling of fourth-round rookie D’Ante Smith.

After getting thrown to the wolves at offensive tackle earlier in the week due to injuries, struggling one day and bouncing back the next, the Bengals threw Smith at guard for Saturday’s practice.

“I’m just thinking, ‘Let’s go play,’ Smith said, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “The big thing was getting the technique down. And it’s a lot faster in there.”

Besides one penalty, Smith was mostly up to task too. The last time he played guard was at the Senior Bowl, which is clearly something line coach Frank Pollack had in mind while making the move — after shifting Michael Jordan from left guard to right guard.

This is a temporary thing and Smith figures to make the roster either way. The way his body has bounced back after COVID protocols and his versatility should see him through and he’s got long-term starter potential.

But as far as interesting training camp developments go, this is pretty high up there, as it puts even more pressure on guys like Billy Price and Jordan for a limited number of roster spots.
