Three Boston Celtics among NBA’s top small forward career earners

You might be surprised to learn who holds the top spot.

Given the storied history of the Boston Celtics, it should not surprise that some of the highest-paid small forwards in NBA history have donned the green and white at some point in their careers in the league.

We were reminded of this fact at the Celtics Wire by a recent assessment of the highest-paid players who played the 3 as their primary position in the Association by HoopsHype’s Dionysis Aravantinos, with a total of three such players having been Boston players during their NBA careers. Perhaps even more interesting is the player who holds the top spot among Celtics alumni, not a player many might guess.

Let’s dive into the trio of Boston alumni who help make up this list.

What if the Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Danilo Gallinari, and Malcolm Brogdon injuries didn’t happen?

Check out an intriguing deep dive into alternate realities we had the misfortune of missing out on in the timeline we call home.

Now that we are up to our collective necks in the summer doldrums of the 2023 NBA offseason, Boston Celtics media outlets have begun to lean on the critical mode of offseason content creation, the counterfactual analysis — or as most people tend to think about it, the “what if” aspect of thinking about our favorite ball club.

That is the tack taken by John Karalis on a recent episode of the “Locked On Celtics” podcast, where the host tries to imagine how the 2022-23 season might have unfolded if certain things had broken other ways, such as if Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Danilo Gallinari, and Malcolm Brogdon did not suffer injuries.

While, as these exercises always are, an impossible-to-prove effort to think about the Celtics, it is an intriguing deep dive into alternate realities we had the misfortune of missing out on in the timeline we call home.

Danilo Gallinari has revenge on his mind for his next meeting vs. the Boston Celtics

“I can’t wait to play against Boston,” said Gallo on a recent podcast appearance.

Fans of the Boston Celtics will likely have revenge games to watch out for next season when the Celtics play former Boston floor general Marcus Smart‘s new team, the Memphis Grizzlies, as well as when they play ex-Celtics reserve forward Grant Williams‘ new ball club, the Dallas Mavericks.

And now, they might want to add the Washington Wizards to their list of potential revenge games, though that will likely depend as much on how well veteran forward (and former Boston signee) Danilo Gallinari is playing after recovering from the second ACL tear of his career. Speaking on his personal podcast “A Cresta Alta,” the Celtics alum said (via Sky Sports) that he will “mark the games against Boston on (his) calendar.”

“I’m spring-loaded,” he added, describing how he feels after nearing the end of his rehabilitation for the tear sustained in FIBA World Cup play that kept him out of a Celtics uniform.

“I can’t wait to play against Boston: as soon as the schedule comes out I will put an X for every time I play against Boston,” he added.

“I’m excited, I’m ready to start the new season,” said Gallo of his recovery. “Right now I’m still in rehab so I’m not ready nowadays to play a basketball game, but the goal is to arrive for training camp 100% ready.”

All Gallinari quotes were translated via Google Translate.

Like Marcus Smart, Danilo Gallinari also thought he was coming back to the Celtics

The Flower Mound native reportedly wasn’t the only one shocked by the Kristaps Porzingis deal.

Not every dream comes true in real life, but it has to sting all the more given how close former Boston Celtics forward Danilo Gallinari got to playing for his childhood favorite team. “You have the chance to sign for a team like the Celtics that are fighting for a championship, and it’s the first or second time in my career where I have the chance to be on a team that is fighting for a championship,” said the Italian swingman via MassLive’s Garret Cole. “But then the injury came. It was tough.”

“In terms of injuries, timing in my life has always been terrible,” Gallo related. “They always came at the wrong time. Definitely, this time came at the wrong time.”

Gallinari managed to stick with the Celtics during a long and difficult rehabilitation from a torn ACL and thought he would make it onto Boston’s active roster for the 2023-24 season after his exit interview for the team’s 2022-23 campaign.

“I had a meeting with the team probably three, four days before the trade, and the meeting was a little different – the reason why I didn’t expect the trade,” he explained.

“I’ve been through it before many times, it’s just the craziness about the NBA sometimes. It was pretty quick and unexpected.”

Celtics trade Marcus Smart to Memphis, land Kristaps Porzingis in massive deal with Wizards and Grizzlies

The Boston Celtics are bringing aboard Kristaps Porzingis next season, but sending Marcus Smart to Memphis in the process as part of a blockbuster deal with the Wizards and Grizzlies.

The Boston Celtics have opened up the 2023 offseason with surprise fireworks, sending veteran guard Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies while reeling in former All-Star Kristaps Porzingis and draft equity according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. This marks a massive shake-up for a Celtics team that came up short this spring in seeking a repeat trip to the NBA Finals.

Along with Porzingis, Boston will receive the No. 25 pick in Thursday’s draft from Memphis as well as a 2024 first-rounder from the Grizzlies via Golden State. Marcus Smart, the longest-tenured member of the Celtics, is headed to Memphis. Boston is sending the No. 35 pick in this year’s draft, Danilo Gallinari, and Mike Muscala to the Wizards. Memphis point guard Tyus Jones will be also be routed to Washington.

The 7’3″ Porzingis represents a huge injection of talent for Boston’s frontcourt. He spent last season posting career highs across the board with Washington, and the 27-year old gives the Celtics a new and dynamic weapon alongside Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Marcus Smart’s departure, meanwhile, leaves a notable hole in Boston’s guard rotation and in the locker room.

Report: Danilo Gallinari is being included in Kristaps Porzingis trade talks

The Danilo Gallinari era of the Boston Celtics might be coming to an end before the Italian swingman even steps on the court.

The Danilo Gallinari era of the Boston Celtics might end before the Italian swingman ever steps on the court based on new reporting from Yahoo Sports Jake Fischer.

Per Fischer, “Gallinari is being included in the developing three-team trade involving Boston, (the Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards swapping Malcolm Brogdon for Kritaps Porzingis) with Gallinari on track to head to the Wizards.”

If Boston does not believe strongly that Gallinari can contribute to the team substantially next season, such a move would make sense. The Celtics’ title aspirations demand as much capable frontcourt depth as possible, especially given the past health of Robert Williams III and the heavy minutes on veteran Al Horford’s legs over the last two seasons.

How these moves will play with the looming restricted free agency of reserve swingman Grant Williams remains to be seen. The Charlotte native reportedly possesses a deep market for his services.

Celtics vet Danilo Gallinari exercises player option for ’23-24 season

The Italian Stallion is back with the Celtics after opting in to the final year of his contract.

Boston Celtics veteran forward Danilo Gallinari has officially opted in to the final year of his contract, a player option worth $6.8 million, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Gallinari joined the Celtics in free agency last summer before tearing his left ACL a few weeks later playing for his native Italy in a FIBA qualifying game. Gallinari did not appear in any games for Boston last year.

Prior to his injury, however, there was hopes Gallinari could provide the Celtics with some shooting and veteran leadership off the bench. Now healthy, Wojnarowski reported Gallinari is expected to have a “sizable role” with Boston next season.

During the 2021-22 campaign, the last time he was healthy, Gallinari proved an effective offensive support for the Atlanta Hawks. He shot 38.1% from 3, something that could be helpful for finding a spot in head coach Joe Mazzulla’s rotation.

Boston’s Danilo Gallinari on how injury puts players in the gym more – not less

The rehab process is such a long and tough process that you spend a lot of hours in the gym,” relates Gallo.

You might reasonably think an injured player might not see the inside of a gym as much as his healthy teammates, but according to Boston Celtics veteran forward Danilo Gallinari in a recent interview with the Olympic’s Scott Bregman, the exact opposite is true.

“Believe it or not, when you are injured, you spend way more time in the gym than when you’re not injured,” explained Gallinari, who stayed close to the team despite being unable to play last season due to an ACL tear sustained in the 2022 offseason. “The rehab process is such a long and tough process that you spend a lot of hours in the gym.”

“I like it,” he suggested. “I’ve always liked to work on my body and see how the body changes and what my body can do to get to the best version of myself.”

The Italian swingman has a player option with the Celtics next season it seems likely he will pick up given the team’s thin frontcourt rotation.

Opting into the final year of his current deal also has the upside of eliminating the risk of landing in a less attractive spot should the best offers for his services not align with his personal goals.

Joel Embiid, Danilo Gallinari spotted going through workouts ahead of Game 1 of the East Semifinals

One of the two is considerably more likely to see floor time, however.

Both the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers are dealing with players recuperating from knee injuries, with both Joel Embiid and Danilo Gallinari having been recently spotted working out ahead of the two teams’ first contest in the 2023 Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Both Gallo and Embiid were getting up shots with the latter looking far more able to move around the court. But even though Gallinari is clearly the more mobile of the pair, it seems more probable that we will see Embiid attempt to take the court this series, while a Gallinari return seems implausible.

This is mainly due to the fact that Embiid was in postseason shape when he sprained his knee, while Gallo is still working his way back from a much more severe injury to his knee in the form of an ACL tear.
