Gerrit Cole furiously rips Daniel Vogelbach for a bat flip and slow HR trot in spring training

Gerrit Cole was MAD at this.

It’s only spring training, but we’ve already got some beef ahead of the 2024 MLB season.

On Friday, New York Yankees star Gerrit Cole threw a fastball that Toronto Blue Jays slugger Daniel Vogelbach sent deep into the Florida night. There would be no problem with that, but Vogelbach gave a little bat flip and maybe Cole thought his home run trot was a little slow for a game that was happening on the first day of March and not in the regular season.

“Yeah, what’s the day? Are we still in February? March 1st? Yeah, he enjoyed that homer,” Cole said on Friday, per MLB’s Bryan Hoch. And Cole added this when asked if he’d remember that: “I don’t forget a lot of things.”

WHEW.

Everyone loves the classy, ‘boozy but subdued’ celebration by the Mets after their postseason berth

Pete Alonso said the Mets were very subtle.

The New York Mets clinched a playoff berth Monday night, earning a spot in the postseason for the first time since 2016.

New York defeated the Milwaukee Brewers behind a marvelous pitching performance by Max Scherzer, who earned the 200th victory of his MLB career. He had a perfect game through six innings, but his bid ended there because it was his first game back from injury.

It is no small accomplishment for the Mets to make the postseason, and nobody would have blamed them for celebration. Mets owner Steve Cohen, however, described the events as “modest” and that there will be far bigger celebrations when the moment calls for it.

Mets infielder Francisco Lindor said it was a “classy” celebration, per The Athletic’s Will Sammon. Watch how Mets designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach exemplifies that while casually sipping a beer:

Even though this is only their tenth postseason berth in franchise history, the guys acted like they had been there before. It was all very low-key and super chilled out.

That’s because, according to Mets manager Buck Showalter, these Mets are a “mature group” that stays in the moment. It’s not the first time that Showalter has used that phrase to describe his team.

That maturity led the Associated Press to describe their celebration as “boozy but subdued” after the victory. Mets first baseman Pete Alonso shared the same sentiment, using the words “very subdued” and “very subtle” before flashing a cheeky grin.

John Harper described why the Mets may emphasize this point (via SNY):

“If you watched from the beginning of this 2022 season, you couldn’t have been surprised that the Mets celebrated their postseason clinching in Milwaukee on Monday night in subdued fashion — sipping champagne from elegant glassware rather than spraying it wildly from oversized bottles.

They have been the epitome of professionalism all year, after all, and an over-the-top party would have been out of character for them when so much is still at stake over these last few weeks of the season.”

Harper wasn’t the only person to notice the choice to use glassware.

New York Post’s Mike Vaccaro also noted that the champagne was “distributed civilly” in glasses. He added that the Mets will have other opportunities “to splash and spray and shower each other” if they keep winning.

Several other reporters described the scene as “subdued” as well:

Mets’ Daniel Vogelbach chose ‘Milkshake’ as his walk-up song and MLB fans thought it was epic

Best walk-up song … EVER?!

After seeing their NL East lead dwindle for much of June and July, the Mets are back in the driver’s seat. And the addition of Daniel Vogelbach to boost the DH slot is a big reason for that.

But Vogelbach’s value seems to extend beyond the box score. He knows how to lighten up the clubhouse — just check out what he chose for his walk-up song on Wednesday.

With the Mets all selecting walk-up songs performed by women for Citi Field’s Women’s Day, Vogelbach opted to change his song to “Milkshake” by Kelis. And let me tell ya, MLB fans thought the choice was absolutely epic (and hilarious).

So good.

Here’s what the rest of his teammates chose (special shoutout to Jeff McNeil):

Through two innings, Vogelbach already had a hit and an RBI, so he might need to keep the song for now on.

Mets fans are already comparing Daniel Vogelbach to Babe Ruth, but like, a better modern version

Daniel Vogelbach has never lost in the World Series.

New York Mets fan favorite Daniel Vogelbach has become one of the fun favorite players to watch in the MLB. Look at the way he hustles to score on the base paths!

Since the Mets acquired Vogelbach from the Pirates earlier this season, the team has won 14 games and lost just twice. If they kept that pace for the entire length of a 162-game season, they would win somewhere between 141 and 142 games.

Vogelbach, of course, isn’t directly responsible for all fourteen of the victories for New York. He gets help from stars like Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, Max Scherzer, Edwin Diaz, Jacob deGrom, and manager Buck Schowalter.

Vogelbach, however, is well-deserving of the cult following he has earned during his time with the Mets. He has played so well that one fan made an infographic comparing him to Babe Ruth:

The reasons are hilarious and leave me convinced that, yeah, Vogelbach is better than The Great Bambino. Just look at all of the evidence!

Other fans have compared Vogelbach to the Hall of Famer as well, and you can see some of the best tweets making the side-by-side below:

Mets DH Daniel Vogelbach scored all the way from first and MLB fans loved it

He had SPEED!

Daninel Vogelbach running the bases with speed is clearly becoming a thing.

The New York Mets DH already impressed the heck out of everyone with his surprising speed last month during a Sunday night game.

This time, it was him scoring from first that had MLB fans loving it. In the Mets’ huge win over the Atlanta Braves — extending an NL East lead to 6.5 games — on Sunday, there was a struggle in the outfield to grab a Mark Canha ball hit there, but it doesn’t matter.

Vogelback scoring from first was just awesome and everyone absolutely agreed. Check it out:

Examining Mark Feinsand’s fits for Trey Mancini before trade deadline

Where could the Notre Dame product be headed at or before the trade deadline?

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com has Notre Dame product Trey Mancini as a trade deadline candidate with rising stock. The Baltimore Orioles are in the cellar of the American League, and with Mancini arbitration-eligible for one more season, it makes little sense for one of baseball’s best run producers in 2021 to stay where he is. Feinsand offers three teams that might benefit more from Mancini’s talents. With 47 RBIs this season and a .979 OPS over the past month, Mancini could contribute to one of these suitors:
