Panthers have largest contingent on hand for Kenny Pickett’s pro day

The Panthers, hands down, were the most represented team at Pitt QB Kenny Pickett’s pro day.

Save for owner David Tepper and the guy who pops the popcorn at Bank of America Stadium, the Carolina Panthers seemingly had everyone in Pittsburgh today. And they’re there, no doubt, for Kenny Pickett.

At the start of what’ll be a key 48 hours for the organization, Carolina’s brass just about flooded the UPMC Sports Performance Complex on Monday. There, they’ve locked in on Pickett—the first of two quarterback prospects that sixth overall selection may ultimately be used on.

Being that this offseason is of particular importance for the current regime, and that their decision with said pick could shape the franchise for years to come, they spared no expense on their representation. While 31 of the NFL’s 32 teams were in attendance at University of Pittsburgh pro day, the Panthers were the only one to send a full house.

That house consisted of:

  • General manager Scott Fitterer
  • Assistant general manager Dan Morgan
  • Head coach Matt Rhule
  • Offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo
  • Quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan

Also, Rhule and company didn’t mind making themselves at home either:

The Panthers are already well-acquainted with the 2021 First-team All-American passer—as he not only put his talents on display all over Carolina’s home turf back in December, but was a former recruit of Rhule’s at Temple University. So, will they get even more well-acquainted come April?

A reminder that Matt Rhule has final say over Panthers’ roster decisions

Just in case you needed a refresher, any and all roads to the Carolina Panthers roster must go through Matt Rhule.

Matt Rhule’s fate as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers will ultimately be decided by the work of one man and one man only. And that man is, well, Matt Rhule.

Jonathan Alexander of the Charlotte Observer joined FOX Sports Upstate’s  Game On with Richmond and John on Monday to discuss Rhule’s influence as the Panthers head into a critical 2022 season. Alexander, just in case you needed a reminder, provided us with a very key detail of the regime.

“You know Matt Rhule has in his contract that he has final say over roster decisions?” said Alexander, who had reported on that fact back on Jan. 16. “So many of the decisions are at the direction of Matt Rhule, and there were some decisions that were mistakes.”

Those mistakes include—but certainly are not limited to—the signing of Teddy Bridgewater, the trade for Sam Darnold, the trade of Denzel Perryman and, perhaps, the choice to bypass the selection of Justin Fields or Mac Jones in last year’s draft. Although they have themselves what’ll surely be a fine young cornerback in Jaycee Horn, the Panthers are stuck quite deep in quarterback purgatory as a result of Rhule’s judgement.

Alexander went on to suggest the franchise would be better off if those decisions came more as a collective effort, in step with general manager Scott Fitterer and assistant general manager Dan Morgan.

“I do think it would be beneficial if Scott Fitterer and Dan Morgan—if they took a more collaborative approach than they’ve been taking,” he added. “Not saying that they haven’t been collaborative—but, I think, more on everybody to make these decisions.”

Hey, now isn’t that a novel concept? Allowing a general manager to actually . . . manage? Hmmm.

Anyway, there’s no doubt whose recipe the organization has been following since 2020. So, hopefully for Rhule’s sake, his experience cleaning up kitchens as a short-order cook will come in handy for the mess he’s made in his new position as team czar.

Panthers hire former Pro Bowl linebacker Dan Morgan as assistant GM

Panthers hire former Pro Bowl linebacker Dan Morgan as assistant general manager.

The Panthers interviewed at least four candidates for their assistant general manager position. In the end, they chose former Carolina linebacker Dan Morgan. The hiring was announced today on the team website.

After a Hall of Fame college career at Miami, Morgan was the team’s first-round pick in the 2001 NFL draft. He spent seven seasons playing for the Panthers, appearing in 59 regular season games during that time. At his peak, Morgan was a Pro Bowler in the 2004 season. He posted 102 combined tackles, two sacks and two interceptions that year. Unfortunately, Morgan only had one more healthy season after that before injuries cut his career short. He retired for good in 2009 after attempting a comeback with the Saints.

Since then, Morgan has been working his way up the ladder as an executive. He began his front office career with the Seahawks as a Scouting intern in 2010, eventually being promoted to Seattle’s Director of Pro Personnel. From there, he went to Buffalo, where he spent the last three years as their Director of Player Personnel.

Bills lose Dan Morgan to Panthers front office

Carolina Panthers hire Dan Morgan as assistant general manager.

The Carolina Panthers have plucked a member of the Buffalo Bills’ front office.

Early last week, it was reported that the Bills’ director of player personnel, Dan Morgan, would interview for the Panthers’ vacant assistant general manager position. On Saturday, the Panthers announced that Morgan landed the job:

In 2001, Morgan was a first-round pick of the Panthers at No. 11 overall. In 2018, the Bills hired Morgan, who was previously the Seahawks’ director of pro scouting.

Prior to Morgan interviewing for the job, MMQB’s Albert Breer called Morgan a “name to watch” in regard to the vacant position. The 42-year-old will work alongside current Panthers GM Scott Fitterer.

In 2017, the Bills hired both head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane from the Panthers.

Panthers request interview with Bills’ Dan Morgan for assistant GM job

Carolina Panthers will interview Buffalo Bills’ Dan Morgan.

The Carolina Panthers have requested permission from the Buffalo Bills to interview a member of their front office for their vacant assistant general manager position. That potential candidate is Dan Morgan.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have requested permission to talk to the  Bills’ director of player personnel. Morgan has held that position in Buffalo since 2018.

Earlier that same day, MMQB’s Albert Breer called Morgan a “name to watch” in regard to the vacant position.

While Morgan might be viewed as one of those classic Bills-Panthers connections going back and forth which usually have to do with Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane, Morgan actually goes a bit deeper than that with the Panthers. Carolina selection him No. 11 overall in the 2001 NFL draft.

Prior to joining the Bills, Morgan was the Seahawks’ director of pro scouting.

With owner David Tepper, head coach Matt Rhule and general manager Scott Fitterer all finding homes with the organization over the past three years, the Carolina Panthers have seen its new regime now settle in. That, however, doesn’t mean it won’t be going ahead without some old faces.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers have requested permission from the Buffalo Bills to interview former linebacker Dan Morgan for their assistant general manager position. Morgan has served as Buffalo’s director of player personnel since 2018.

Oh yeah, Morgan was even something of a player for Carolina back in the day. Ok, maybe he was more than just “something,” having been drafted by the team out of the University of Miami with the 11th overall pick of the 2001 NFL draft.

The 6-foot-2, 245-pound wrecking ball went on to become a fan favorite, playing key parts in the historic defensive turnaround from 2001 to 2002 and on the 2003 Super Bowl squad. Morgan recorded a Super Bowl-record 18 tackles in the memorable 32-29 loss to the New England Patriots.

He’d then be selected as an All-Pro and Pro Bowler for the first and only times in his career the next year after posting 102 combined tackles, 2.0 sacks and two interceptions in 2004. Numerous lower body injuries cut Morgan’s career short, as the linebacker retired after just seven seasons.

As far as his post-playing career, he has received continuous praise in his current role for the Bills. Morgan, additionally, has experience working alongside Fitterer, with both having been apart of the Seattle Seahawks’ brass dating back to 2010.

The Panthers, as reported by Rapoport as well, will also seek to interview Ian Cunningham for the same opening. Cunningham is currently the assistant director of player personnel for the Philadelphia Eagles.
