Dan Lanning stands among highest-paid young coaches in NCAA for 2023 season

The USA TODAY coaches salary database for 2023 is now out. So where does Oregon’s Dan Lanning rank among the top-paid coaches in the nation?

It may not be a monumental day in the world of college football, but it’s something we definitely take note of.

Each season, USA TODAY releases the database for salaries of college football head coaches at public universities, showing who is paid the most per season, the potential bonuses included, and the buyouts coaches have to pay if they end their contracts before a certain period of time.

That last bit of information is always the most interesting since it usually becomes one of the most notable figures each and every year as we see the coaching carousel continue to churn in the world of college football.

Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning became a very rich man earlier this year, signing a new contract extension before the season in late July and tying him to the team through the end of the decade.

Lanning’s extension increases his yearly salary from $4.7 million to $7 million, increasing by $200,000 each year through 2028. Should he hit all of his incentives and kickers, Lanning could make more than $70 million over the next nine years in Eugene, while a massive $20 million buyout has been put in place should he leave the Ducks.

So how do those numbers stack up against the other highly paid coaches in the nation? Now that USA TODAY’s database has been released, we can finally get an idea:

** It should be noted that the database only covers public universities, so contracts for Lincoln Riley (USC), Josh Freeman (Notre Dame) and coaches at other private schools are not included. **

Dan Lanning in good company with college coaches earning $7 million or more per year

A look at some of the college coaches who make more than $7 million per year, a club of which Oregon Ducks’ Dan Lanning is now a member.

On Thursday morning, the University of Oregon Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a contract extension for Oregon Duck head football coach Dan Lanning.

Though he has just one year of being a head coach under his belt and a 10-3 career record, Lanning is getting paid as much as some of the top coaches in the nation. When you look at the coaching landscape in college football, it’s clear Oregon’s man is in great company when it comes to coaches who haul in more than $7 million per year.

Here are some of the other names that get that type of money:

Contract details emerge for Dan Lanning’s extension with Oregon Ducks

On Tuesday evening, it was reported by columnist John Canzano that the Oregon Ducks had signed head coach Dan Lanning to a contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2028 season while making him one of the 20 highest-paid coaches in college football.

Now we have more clarification on the contract numbers.

According to The Oregonian’s James Crepea, Lanning’s extension is  increasing his yearly salary from $4.7 million to $7 million, increasing by $200,000 each year through 2028.

Lanning’s original contract with the Ducks, which was approved in December 2021, was for six years and $29.1 million, making him the fifth-highest-paid coach in the Pac-12 Conference. He earned $4.6 million in salary last season, plus $100,000 for winning nine regular-season games and $100,000 for appearing in the Holiday Bowl.

Under his existing contract, Lanning’s salary was set to increase to $4.7 million in 2023 and increase by $100,000 in each subsequent year.

The new buyout to leave UO for Lanning’s contract has risen to $20 million, and will last throughout the duration of the contract. Under the old contract, it was $14 million through Jan. 31, and decreased to $10 million through Jan. 31, 2024. It was set to go down each year to $7 million, $3 million, $2 million and $1 million, respectively.

Report: Dan Lanning receives contract extension through 2028 season

Dan Lanning isn’t leaving Eugene any time soon, it appears. The Ducks have extended his contract through the 2028 season.

The Oregon Ducks don’t plan on letting head coach Dan Lanning go anywhere soon, it appears.

According to a report from John Canzano, the second-year head coach received a contract extension from the Ducks on Tuesday, tying him to the team through the 2028 season.

Lanning’s original contract with the Oregon Ducks, which was approved in December of 2021, was for six years and $29.1 million, making him the fifth-highest-paid coach in the Pac-12 conference. While the numbers for Lanning’s extension have not been reported, Canzano reports the deal will have Lanning’s salary rank in the top 15-20 nationally among college football coaches.

What will be interesting to see as details emerge is what the buyout for Lanning’s contract will be. While Lanning has stated repeatedly that he has no plans to leave Eugene and coach elsewhere, there is always a possibility another job comes open, and a school has to pay the buyout for Lanning to pick up and leave.

We will release more information as it comes in.

Contract details revealed for Oregon coach Dan Lanning

The Oregon Ducks have given Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Dan Lanning a big raise to be the Ducks’ next head coach

The Oregon Ducks have given Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Dan Lanning a big raise to be the Ducks’ next head coach. Lanning is slated to make $29.1M over a six-year contract. Lanning’s annual earnings start at $4.6M per year and increases by $100,000 per year.

Georgia could not offer that sort of money for Lanning to remain as the Dawgs’ defensive coordinator. Lanning’s contract is modest compared to some of the other contracts college football coaches have signed this offseason.

Lanning has additional incentives in his contract that range from $25,000-500,000.

Defensive analyst Will Muschamp and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann will takeover as co-defensive coordinators next year following Lanning’s departure.

Dan Lanning will remain on the UGA staff as he coaches his defense through the remainder of the College Football Playoff. UGA plays Michigan in the Orange Bowl for a spot in the national championship on Dec. 31 in Miami.

Lanning’s first career game as Oregon coach in 2022 will be against Georgia in Atlanta.

Dan Lanning, who is only 35 and is the youngest head coach in Oregon history, has served on the UGA staff since 2018. Lanning started his Georgia career as as outside linebackers coach, but was quickly promoted to defensive coordinator in 2019.

Lanning has coached some of the top-ranked defenses in the country during his career with Georgia. His defenses have been particularly stout against the run. Lanning’s defense has been historically good this year.
