JJ Redick wants Dalton Knecht to become an all-around player

While Lakers head coach JJ Redick is impressed with rookie Dalton Knecht, he wants the 23-year-old to improve other areas of his game.

Plenty of Los Angeles Lakers fans are optimistic or even excited about Dalton Knecht, the team’s first-round draft pick last month. Knecht was a dead-eye shooter at the University of Tennessee, where he won the SEC Player of the Year award this past season, and some have called him the most NBA-ready player in this year’s draft class.

After a couple of poor games to start this year’s summer league, he has gotten himself going. On Friday against the Houston Rockets, he scored a game-high 25 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field and 5-of-11 from 3-point range.

Some have said the rest of his game greatly lags behind his shooting and overall offensive capabilities. He did have six rebounds and four assists on Friday, and Lakers head coach JJ Redick talked about him improving the non-shooting aspects of his game, especially his defense, on Friday (at 3:00).

“We know he can shoot the ball,” Redick said. “I spent 30 mins with him yesterday on the court after practice with live defense, going through some actions and just working with him on creating separation. He shot pretty darn well. I know he can shoot it.

“So it’s the other parts of his game. The defense. The rebounding. The passing. Just the feel of the game that I have also been impressed with… Obviously, we know in the NBA you have to be a two-way player to make an impact, and defensively he’s got to improve like any rookie.”

Redick also praised Knecht’s passing, especially in transition. As Knecht finds his offensive game at the NBA level, a key to getting playing time from Redick will likely be how well he does in other areas.

Going into the draft, Knecht’s defense was the biggest concern scouts had about him. However, he does seem to have the basic athleticism and wingspan to become at least a decent defender at the next level.

LeBron James on Dalton Knecht: Besides Bronny, he was my favorite college player

Dalton Knecht established himself as a first-round pick, and earned high praise from LeBron James for his play at Tennessee.

Dalton Knecht established himself as a first-round talent this year, and the 17th pick earned high praise from Los Angeles Lakers teammate LeBron James for his season at Tennessee.

Knecht was a consensus first-team All-American after averaging 21.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range. He registered a program record eight 35-point performances, including 37 points in a loss to Purdue in the Elite Eight.

The 23-year-old was projected to be a high lottery pick on June 26 after his campaign but fell to the Lakers with the 17th pick in the NBA draft. James, like most, was a bit surprised Knecht was still available when the Lakers were on the clock.

Throughout the course of the college season, Dalton, besides Bronny (James), was my favorite player in college basketball. I watched his game throughout the whole season. I just liked his ability to shoot the ball, his athleticism, his height and his demeanor that he played with. I’ve always felt his game would translate to the NBA. I did not think he would fall to 17 at all, so I didn’t think we’d even have an opportunity to get him, but I’m glad he did.

The Lakers were ecstatic that Knecht fell to them in the draft after ranking him highly on their board. The team, led by president Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick, is impressed with his ability as a shooter on the move or bounce and the three-level scoring he can provide nightly.

Knecht debuted with the Lakers on Saturday in the California Classic, recording 12 points, four assists, two assists and two steals in a loss to the Sacramento Kings. He went 3-of-12 from the field, including 1-of-4 from 3-point range, in 26 minutes.

He can continue his transition with two more games in San Francisco and at least five games in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Nevada. He will certainly have at least one fan in James heading into next season.

Lakers’ 2024 summer league schedule and broadcast info

A look at when each of the Lakers’ summer league games will take place and where fans can watch each contest.

For the next few weeks, people will be able to get a glimpse at some of the Los Angeles Lakers’ most promising young players when they take part in summer league play. Jalen Hood-Schifino, the No. 17 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, won’t participate due to a back procedure he had in March, but Bronny James, Dalton Knecht, Maxwell Lewis and Colin Castleton, among others, will play.

In recent years, summer league has become much more than an opportunity for incoming rookies to get their feet wet in the NBA’s rough waters. It has become a league-wide event, not just for players or even fans, but also for executives, as many general managers make the trip to Las Vegas to be in attendance during games.

The Lakers’ summer league schedule will begin with the California Classic, which will take place starting this weekend. They will face the Sacramento Kings on Saturday, the Golden State Warriors on Sunday and the Miami Heat on Wednesday.

Then the team will make its way to Las Vegas for the main summer league. It will play at least four games there beginning on Friday, July 12.

Every summer league game the Lakers will play in will be televised by either ESPN, ESPN 2 or NBA TV.

Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht has signed his rookie contract

Dalton Knecht, the Lakers’ first-round draft pick, is now officially a member of their roster, as he signed with them on Tuesday.

The Los Angeles Lakers haven’t brought in any outside free agents or made any trades this offseason, at least not yet. But they could already have a new player on their roster who could help elevate them at least a little bit right now.

They had a potential diamond fall into their laps in last week’s draft in the form of University of Tennessee wing Dalton Knecht. Many expected Knecht, a 6-foot-5 sharpshooter who can also attack the basket, to go in the first 10 picks, but instead, the Lakers took him at No. 17.

On Tuesday, he reportedly signed his rookie contract, which will also allow him to participate in summer league play.

Knecht, 23, averaged 21.7 points a game while shooting 45.8% from the field and 39.7% from 3-point range on 6.5 attempts a contest this past season. He recorded a 39-inch vertical leap at the draft combine, and he is generally considered one of the most, if not the most, NBA-ready prospects in this year’s draft class.

Lakers sign Tennessee standout Dalton Knecht to first-round contract

The Lakers signed Dalton Knecht, the 17th overall pick in the NBA draft, on Tuesday to his rookie-scale contract.

The Los Angeles Lakers signed Dalton Knecht, the 17th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft, on Tuesday to his rookie-scale contract, according to the official transaction report.

He will make $3,182,600 next season as the 17th pick.

Knecht was a consensus first-team All-American after averaging 21.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range. He registered a program record eight 35-point performances, including 37 points in a loss to Purdue in the Elite Eight.

The 23-year-old became the second player in program history to register at least five 35-point games and had the first 40-point effort in regulation by a Vol in over 34 years.

The Lakers were ecstatic that Knecht fell to them in the draft after ranking him highly on their board. They are impressed with his ability as a shooter on the move or bounce and the three-level scoring he can provide on a nightly basis.

Knecht was one of 13 players listed Tuesday on the Lakers’ roster for the California Classic and NBA Summer League, along with second-round pick Bronny James and roster players Maxwell Lewis and Colin Castleton, among others.

The Lakers will begin their summer league schedule at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Saturday against the Sacramento Kings. They will play three games there before starting a five-game campaign on July 12 versus the Houston Rockets in Las Vegas, Nevada (7:30 p.m. EDT, ESPN).

Lakers draft pick Dalton Knecht has chosen a fitting jersey number

Dalton Knecht, the Lakers’ 2024 first-round pick, has chosen a jersey number that is fitting and meme-ready.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been universally praised for taking University of Tennessee wing Dalton Knecht with the No. 17 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. He was expected by many to be selected within the first 10 picks, but he fell to the Lakers, and it looks like they will therefore have a player who can help right away.

Knecht is a sharpshooter who averaged 21.7 points a game and shot 39.7% from 3-point range while winning the SEC Player of the Year award and the Julius Erving Award during the 2023-24 season. Some feel he is the most NBA-ready player in this year’s draft class, as he can also attack the basket and finish strong at the rim.

The 23-year-old has chosen a jersey number that is fitting and meme-ready: No. 4.

It is unknown how well Knecht plays the board game Connect Four. But it looks like he will connect (pun intended) from downtown many times next season and perhaps for seasons to come.

Dalton Knecht will make it hard for Bronny James to get extended Lakers minutes

Dalton Knecht does things Bronny James can’t yet do. This is a plain fact.

The Los Angeles Lakers selected Dalton Knecht at pick No. 17 in the NBA draft from Tennessee. The former SEC Player of the Year will instantly make the Lakers better. What Knecht will also do: Make it harder for Bronny James to get a lot of minutes with the Lakers next season. Knecht is a bigger investment, being 38 draft spots higher as an obviously superior college player with an NBA-ready profile. He also plays on the wing, as Bronny does. That’s a duplication of roles on the roster. Knecht should get ample minutes along with the established Laker veterans. It’s hard for Bronny to make the same claim and elbow his way into a comparable amount of playing time.

LeBron Wire wrote this about Knecht:

“While the Lakers were a decent eighth in 3-point shooting percentage this regular season, they were 28th in 3-point attempts. Furthermore, they were 15th in both categories out of the 16 teams that made it to the 2024 NBA Playoffs. They need at least one additional player who can not only make it rain from downtown but is also a high-volume 3-point shooter. Knecht seems to check both boxes.

“In three seasons of Division I college basketball, he made 38.3% of his 3-point attempts, and he was at 39.7% on 6.5 attempts a game this season for the University of Tennessee. He seems to have the ability to not only hit open treys but also contested treys, which is one sign of a very good or great shooter.”

Knecht does things Bronny doesn’t do, and he does them at a high level. It will be hard for Bronny to claim a significant chunk of playing time with Knecht on the Lakers’ roster.
