Dallas Goedert TD gives Eagles a 10-6 lead over the Cowboys at the half

Dallas Goedert TD gives Eagles a 10-6 lead over the Cowboys at the half

The Philadelphia Eagles have dominated the Dallas Cowboys in a highly contested first half, but after letting big-play opportunities slip away, the Birds are only up 4 at the half.

The Eagles had 223 total yards in the first half compared to the Cowboys’ 141. Philadelphia led the first down battle as well, accumulating 13 first downs to Dallas’ 5.

More important, The Birds crushed the time of possession battle, holding the ball for 20:44 compared to Cowboys’ 9:13.

With all that, Philadelphia enters the second half with just a 10-6 lead and the Cowboys getting the ball first to start the second half.

JJ Arcega-Whiteside emerged out the gate, making a 27-yard catch over the middle on the first play of the game, and later snagged a 12-yard catch on third down to keep the drive moving.

The Eagles eventually settled for a 36-yard field goal by kicker Jake Elliott.

On the next drive, The Eagles went 63 yards on seven plays for a touchdown. Miles Sanders had a 29-yard catch-and-run and it ended with quarterback Carson Wentz and tight end Dallas Goedert hooking up for a 6-yard score.

Eagles’ TE Zach Ertz questionable to return vs. Cowboys with rib injury

Zach Ertz head to locker room vs. Cowboys after taking shot to the midsection

The Philadelphia Eagles may be without Zach Ertz, as the Eagles Pro Bowl tight end left their game against the Dallas Cowboys with what looked like rib injuries.

Ertz was hit on a play across the middle after Carson Wentz was too high on a throw.

Ertz took the hit from Xavier Woods, went a few more plays and then exited to the locker room to be evaluated.

Dallas Goedert and Josh Perkins will replace Ertz and the Eagles’ next man up approach. Ronald Darby previously left the game with a hip injury.

Behind Enemy Lines: Week 14 Q&A with Eagles Wire

With a Week 14 matchup between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles on tap, we go behind enemy lines for a chat with Eagles Wire.

The New York Giants (2-10) and Philadelphia Eagles (5-7) will square off on Monday Night Football in Week 14.

The Giants opened the week as 8.5-point road underdogs, and the spread has changed only slightly as of Sunday morning with Big Blue now at +9.5

With this matchup on tap, Giants Wire took the opportunity to hold a Q&A with Eagles Wire managing editor Glenn Erby.

Giants Wire: The Eagles are a bit of an enigma this season — up for a couple weeks, down for a couple weeks and repeat. What do you feel has led to the inconsistency and do you believe they will be able to turn things around over the final month of the season and give the fading Dallas Cowboys a run for their money?

Glenn Erby: The inconsistency started with DeSean Jackson’s injury and spiraled from there. The loss of Jackson’s ability to take the top off a defense reduced the Eagles offense to a dink and dump operation. Injuries in the secondary, along the offensive and defensive lines as well has presented the Eagles with the challenge of trying to live up to those Super Bowl aspirations while utilizing a makeshift lineup.

This is a confident team, a team that unfortunately relies on being the underdog and clicking the switch on. Now that they’ve been counted out, I think you’ll see that sense of urgency and consistency that’s been missing.

5 reasons Giants could upset Eagles in Week 14

The New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles square off in Week 14, and here are five reasons Big Blue could come away with the win.

The New York Giants are currently on an eight-game losing streak and are heading to Philadelphia (where they haven’t won a game since 2013) to take on the struggling Eagles on Monday night.

The Eagles are on a three-game losing streak of their own after an embarrassing 37-31 loss to the lowly Miami Dolphins last week. At 5-7, they are watching their divisional championship hopes dwindle away if things continue to trend in the wrong direction.

With the Dallas Cowboys in a rut of their own at 6-6, the Eagles absolutely need to win this game, which arguably makes the Giants even more dangerous in the role as spoiler.

Here are five reasons why the Giants can pull off an improbable victory in a city they haven’t won in since 2013.

Eli Manning

Rookie Daniel Jones seemingly unseated Manning from his 16-year starting quarterback throne with the Giants for good in Week 3 when he took over. Unfortunately, Jones suffered what they are calling a high ankle sprain last week against the Green Bay Packers, despite finishing out the contest.

On Monday Pat Shurmur initially stated that Jones did not require any further tests on the ankle Monday expecting him to be fine. However, on Wednesday Shurmur announced that Jones would not practice while also revealing he suffered a high ankle sprain.

Paging doctor Manning, it now looks more than likely that Eli will start on Monday for the first time since being benched in favor of Jones in Week 3.

While Jones has shown promising signs this season, he still has the expected growing pains of a rookie quarterback. With Eli, the Giants get a veteran Hall of Famer, who has been around the block a few times and has battled it out with the Eagles for close to 20 years. He also eliminates the turnover issues that come with Jones in his first year.

It is expected that Eli will return with a chip on his shoulder and make the most of his surprise playing time. But, keep in mind that Manning has struggled against the Eagles in his career with a 10-22 record, and a 59.3% completion percentage. The Eagles have won their last five meetings with the Giants and nine of their last 10 games. Monday could give us a better idea of whether Pat Shurmur pulled the plug on Eli too early this season. We shall find out.

Eagles TE Zach Ertz expected to be game-time decision after testing out injured hamstring

Zach Ertz expected to be a game-time decision after testing out injured hamstring

Zach Ertz made the trip to Miami to face the Dolphins and according to Tim McManus of ESPN.com, he’ll likely be a game-time decision as he tests out his injured hamstring.

Ertz suffered the injury during the Eagles loss to the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday but was able to finish the game.

The Eagles would have Josh Perkins and co-starter, Dallas Goedert available in Miami if Ertz can‘t play.

Eagles promote TE Josh Perkins from the practice squad to the active roster

Josh Perkins promoted to Philadelphia Eagles active roster

With Zach Ertz dealing with a hamstring injury and the Eagles not wanting to risk the remainder of his season, the Birds are being cautious with the Pro Bowl tight end. Just in case Ertz can’t go against Miami, The Eagles have promoted Josh Perkins to the active roster.

Ertz was listed as questionable for the game with a hamstring injury after not practicing Wednesday or Thursday.

Ertz practiced on a limited basis on Friday and Dallas Goedert will get the start if he can’t go.

Injury may result in young TE showdown for Dolphins and Eagles

The Miami Dolphins will see their second year tight end go toe to toe with another 2nd-round tight end from the 2018 NFL Draft this weekend.

With the 42nd pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins selected TE Mike Gesicki from Penn State — a receiving threat with explosive athleticism and a knack for making big plays down the field. Just seven picks later, the Philadelphia Eagles drafted their own tight end: South Dakota State’s Dallas Goedert, who was felt by many to be the best tight end prospect in the class.

Fast forward to Week 13 of the 2019 NFL season and these two players are facing the first time sharing the field together as professionals. Gesicki figures to command a fair share of targets, given the lack of depth for Miami’s pass catchers. Goedert? He may be bracing for the biggest game of his young NFL career as Eagles’ star TE Zach Ertz continues to battle through a hamstring injury.

Should Ertz not play, the Dolphins will see their reality and their alternate reality on the field simultaneously at Hard Rock Stadium in a chance to hopefully feel vindicated over the selection of Gesicki back in April, 2018.

To this point in their careers, the arrow points towards Goedert being the better pro. Goedert has the edge over Gesicki in receptions (64 to 53), yards (623 to 524) and touchdowns (8-1). All of that despite playing as the TE2 in Philadelphia behind Ertz, who has logged 183 receptions for 1,875 yards and 11 touchdowns in those 27 games in which he’s shared the roster with Goedert.

The good news for Miami? Gesicki is at least starting to turn the corner. He’s experienced career highs in receptions and yards in November (against the Jets) and scored his first career touchdown last week against the Browns. The second year tight end still needs to find more separation on his routes and continue to play with more physicality, but at least he’s become honed in enough to find soft spots in the defense and then use his speed after the catch.

Tight ends are traditionally the position requiring the most time to transition into the NFL, as they’re asked to fill a lot of roles versus their college experience. That’s true for Gesicki, but the Dolphins are still hoping to see their 2018 tight end come out on top of the head to head action.

Dallas Goedert is one of the top-25 players under the age of 25 in the NFL, but according to Pro Football Focus, the Eagles star still isn’t getting the total recognition he deserves.

During a recent ranking of all 32 NFL teams most underrated player, Goedert was the Eagles player of interest.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: TE DALLAS GOEDERT
Zach Ertz is Philly’s number one tight end, but Dallas Goedert has been just as good, earning an 81.4 PFF grade that ranks seventh at the position. He isn’t a deep threat, but he is dangerous after the catch and has enhanced a short-passing offense. On targets of less than 10 yards downfield, Goedert is PFF’s third-highest-graded tight end, and he is second in yards after the catch per reception at 8.6. Not to mention, he has earned a run-blocking grade of 83.5, the best mark among all tight ends.

Goedert has already established himself as one of the NFL’s best blocking tight ends and he’s vastly improved as a route runner.

Eagles’ TE’s could have huge day vs. Patriots with Patrick Chung ruled out

Patriots rule out safety Patrick Chung vs. Eagles

[jwplayer A3qs8Nwq]

The Philadelphia Eagles were already starting to become tight end dominant in the passing game, and with Patriots star safety Patrick Chung being ruled out for Sunday, 12 personnel could be the formation of choice.

New England ruled out Chung for Sunday’s road game against the Philadelphia Eagles due to injuries to his heel and chest.

Veteran safety Duron Harmon will get the start in his place.

With the Eagles having the best tight end tandem in the NFL, Bill Belichick and company can expect to see a ton of Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert on the field together.

During the last meeting between these two teams, Ertz had seven catches for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles thrilling Super Bowl LII victory against New England.

With Alshon Jeffery also out of this game, it’ll be pertinent for Carson Wentz to develop a rhythm with both guys early on, helping to open up things for JJ Arcega-Whiteside and Miles Sanders.

Expect New England to dabble with a different scheme on Sunday, entrusting All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore with the job of slowing down Zach Ertz. Until Nelson Agholor, Jordan Matthews or Arcega-Whiteside can prove themselves as viable threats on the outside, Gilmore will likely be best served to shadow Ertz on Sunday and forcing someone else on the Eagles offense to beat New England.

That man could end up being Goedert, who has the skill level to take advantage of any mismatch presented to him.
