Cowboys name 3 captains for Week 3; Aldon Smith gets nod for defense

A new set of on-field leaders has been designated by the coaching staff.

The Dallas Cowboys continue the new tradition of revolving captainship. Under new head coach Mike McCarthy, season-long captains are a thing of the past and every week for every game, a new set of designated leaders has emerged.

For Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, two long-time members of the team and one newcomer get the honor. Six-time Pro Bowler Zack Martin gets the honor for the offensive side of the ball. Special teams linebacker Justin March will lead that unit, and free agent signing Aldon Smith will captain the defense.

Smith has one of the Cowboys two sacks this season, as the pass rush tries to get itself untracked against the Seahawks front. Meanwhile Martin has been having a less-than-normal year as he adjusts to not having either Travis Frederick or La’el Collins flanking him. The Cowboys’ special teams played a huge role in Week 2 as the club tried (and failed) two fake punts, then turned around and recovered an onside kick before a game-winning field goal.

The Dallas Cowboys are once again going to start a pair of UDFAs at the tackle position against the Seattle Seahawks, as seven-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith is set to miss his second consecutive game with neck stingers. Brandon Knight, who filled in admirably in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, will once again get the nod at left tackle. Meanwhile rookie UDFA Terence Steele will get start No. 3 on the opposite end with RT La’el Collins on injured reserve.

Meanwhile some good news on the defensive side of the ball. DeMarcus Lawrence, who missed the second half of last week with a knee ailment and missed time in practice this week, is set to give it a go at left defensive end. All eyes will be on he and Everson Griffen, as the belief is Mike Nolan has backed off his plan to have the two operate out of the two-point stance.

In a bit of a surprise, rookie third-round defensive tackle Neville Gallimore seems to be a healthy scratch unless there was a late injury that has yet to be reported. Gallimore saw just 20 snaps in the first two games of the season.

On the opposite sideline, the biggest news is that corner Quinton Dunbar will be out. The big offseason signing will not be able to help in trying to contain a Cowboys attack that’s put up 40 points over their last three quarters.

As the Dallas Cowboys prepare to face their third straight NFC opponent to open the season, there are still plenty of questions to be answered with this team despite their resilient and impressive comeback victory last Sunday.

This week the test gets no easier as they head to Seattle to face early season MVP Russell Wilson. The Seahawks have developed into one of the more intriguing non-division matchups that the Cowboys face regularly over the last handful of years. The Cowboys won the last matchup 24-22 in the NFC Wild Card game and lead the series 11-9.

As for Sunday’s game this matchup will be defined by how well these two explosive offenses play, both defenses have struggled thus far this season and it will be on the offenses to set the tone and control the tempo for this matchup. The Cowboys secondary is beat up as they will be without start Chidobe Awuzie, who was filling in for Anthony Brown and now both are on IR. Trevon Diggs is also dealing with a shoulder injury that has limited him in practice. For this Cowboys secondary to hold up versus DK Metcalf and Tyler Locket it’s important the Cowboys do something they have yet to do this year and that’s pressure and sack the quarterback. If the Cowboys can create havoc for Russell Wilson with their four down lineman that will allow the Cowboys to mix their coverages in the secondary in hopes of forcing Wilson into a bad decision that they can capitalize off of.

News: Trevon Diggs appears on Cowboys injury report, Elliott talks ToP battle

Also, the inside story on Dak Prescott and Hayden Hurst’s viral moment, defensive concerns, and Tony Dorsett pays tribute to an all-time RB.

Thought the Dallas DB unit was looking like a skeleton crew with Chidobe Awuzie suddenly set to miss time? Impressive rookie Trevon Diggs has now found himself on Wednesday’s injury report, too. Not an encouraging nugget heading into a showdown with early MVP candidate Russell Wilson.

Elsewhere in Cowboys Nation, more accolades for Dak Prescott after his Week 2 wizardry, concern over the lack of a Dallas pass rush, and what Ezekiel Elliott plans to do to win the time of possession game. We also have a look back at Cowboys-Seahawks history, the good reason DeMarcus Lawrence was absent on Wednesday, and what past Dallas rallies can predict about the team moving forward. Also, the inside story on that moment Dak Prescott and Hayden Hurst shared on the field just after Week 2 went final. All that, plus Coach McCarthy plans to stay behind the mask, and a legendary Cowboys running back pays tribute to one of the all-time greats. Here come the News and Notes.

Trevon Diggs sat out practice with shoulder injury :: NBC Sports

The Cowboys secondary is getting thinner by the day. Hot on the heels of the news that cornerback Chidobe Awuzie would miss multiple weeks with a hamstring issue, word out of Frisco is that rookie Trevon Diggs is also dinged. The second-round draft pick missed Wednesday’s practice session with a shoulder injury after playing all 75 defensive snaps against Atlanta.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott wins NFC Player of Week 2 :: Cowboys Wire

Yeah, three rushing touchdowns, 450 passing yards, and spearheading a comeback win for the ages deserves a little bit of hardware. Prescott won the award twice last season, too.

‘Respect the hell outta you’: Inside Dak Prescott, Hayden Hurst’s intimate exchange after Cowboys-Falcons game :: USA Today

Jori Epstein talks with the Atlanta tight end to learn more about his now-viral moment after Sunday’s Week 2 game. Hurst sought out Prescott to thank him for his recent public comments about the seriousness of treating mental health issues. Hurst shared his own struggles from 2016 and says he hopes he and Prescott can make good on the quarterback’s offer to collaborate on some sort of future initiative.

The Nolan Report: Cowboys defense stuck in neutral without stops and big plays :: The Athletic

Take a deep dive into coordinator Mike Nolan’s unit to dissect why it’s ranked in the bottom third of the league in all the major categories. From takeaways to sacks to allowing explosive plays to third down stops, it’s a sobering look at the unit who’ll be tasked with stopping Russell Wilson this Sunday.

Everson Griffen to adjust technique after slow start for Cowboys pass rush :: Cowboys Wire

The Cowboys’ new defensive end says he’ll switch back to the three-point stance he’s played out for his previous ten seasons after an upright experiment has resulted in just one sack for the four-time Pro Bowler.

Film room: The real reason Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence isn’t meeting expectations as a pass rusher :: Dallas Morning News

John Owning gets into the nitty-gritty of defensive techniques and explains why a few minor tweaks to something as simple as body positioning is having a negative impact on DeMarcus Lawrence’s play thus far this season. Griffen’s proposed cure (as mentioned above) could well be the fix for Lawrence, too.

Zeke: Time of possession ‘starts with me’ :: The Mothership

Russell Wilson is only dangerous when he’s on the field. So the Cowboys are looking to turn around a two-game trend of losing the time of possession battle. Elliott says his focus in Week 3 will be on ball security and converting third downs, especially early in the game.

How come-from-behind wins have altered Cowboys’ past seasons :: ESPN

Cowboys are more toxic than Seahawks in 2020 [Morning Minute Video]

When it comes to being explosive, and stopping the other team at doing so – folks might think it’s one way, but it’s the other. A quick morning minute to preview the matchup between Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson and the Cowboys and Seahawks.

When it comes to being explosive, and stopping the other team at doing so – folks might think it’s one way, but it’s the other. A quick morning minute to preview the matchup between Dak Prescott, Russell Wilson and the Cowboys and Seahawks.

When looking at the output by both teams early in the 2020 season, it’s easy to come away from it thinking the Cowboys haven’t been on par with the 2-0 Seattle Seahawks. After all, Wilson is deservedly getting all of the early MVP votes with just 11 incompletions through two games. But alas, when sticking a toe into the water, things are hot in the Cowboys jacuzzi, too.
