Cowboys respond to Jaguars score with 3rd-straight TD drive

Doug Pederson showed some wrinkles and Kellen Moore matched the energy with a flashy, efficient Cowboys TD drive. | From @CDBurnett7

The Cowboys came out to a quick 14-0 lead, but Doug Pederson dialed up the misdirection to confuse the Dallas defense. The struggles also a result of Leighton Vander-Esch’s absence with a neck injury and the Jaguars cut into the lead, making it 14-7 late in the first half.

Following the score, wide receiver KaVontae Turpin found a crease to spring a 38-yard return and give the Cowboys great field position. With less real estate to cover, Kellen Moore matched Pederson’s offensive message with some wrinkles of his own. After marching down into the red zone, Moore called a zone read which quarterback Dak Prescott took down to the 1-yard line, just a step from a score. Two plays later, Prescott went play-action and found wide receiver Noah Brown creeping near the offensive line for the third Dallas touchdown.

Amidst all the new additions and conversations at receiver, Brown continues his efficiency and has four catches for 32 yards in the first half. Prescott and the offense are running on all cylinders, and the Jaguars defense has no answers in the first half.

Dak Prescott was perfect on the Cowboys’ third drive, extending the lead to double digits in Jacksonville. | From @cdburnett7

The Jaguars’ surrenders the sixth-most yards per game with 368.7 and the Cowboys have capitalized on it early. With 13 minutes left in the second quarter, Dallas has 144 yards and a double-digit lead.

Quarterback Dak Prescott took over the reins after the run game delivered the first touchdown, and he was a perfect 5-for-5 on the Cowboys’ third drive for 56 yards and forced a defensive pass interference for 17 yards to add onto the yardage. On the first play in the red zone, Prescott attacked a pass rusher in coverage with a anticipation throw to tight end Peyton Hendershot, who had the ball drop right into his hands in the end zone.

Hendershot is an undrafted free agent, but he’s made his presence felt as the third-string tight end. Jake Ferguson is inactive in Jacksonville, so Hendershot was given the opportunity and delivered. With plenty of time left in the first half, the Cowboys have a 14-0 lead and can play their own style of football.

Cowboys LB Vander Esch leaves game with neck injury

The Cowboys’ leader in total tackles is questionable to return with an injury that has plagued his career. | From @CDBurnett7

UPDATE: Leighton Vander Esch has been ruled out for the rest of the game.

Coming into 2022, linebacker Leighton Vander-Esch’s status in Dallas wasn’t a certainty. Thirteen games into the season, he’s elevated his play as the Cowboys’ leading tackler with 90 total on the season.

During the first quarter in Jacksonville, Vander-Esch suffered a neck injury and is questionable to return. Neck injuries have haunted him throughout his career,

Vander-Esch was walked to the locker room and his role will be covered by the pair of Anthony Barr and Damone Clark if he’s unable to return. Considering the history of neck injuries, it’s an immediate worry for a Dallas defense already battling through injuries.

The Cowboys elected to receive after winning the coin toss in Jacksonville, looking to set the tone on offense. After crossing midfield, the drive stalled out and the aggressive approach hurt Dallas. On the ensuing Jaguars drive, the Cowboys defense responded.

Jacksonville worked near midfield after two first downs then running back Travis Etienne Jr. mishandled the ball, with safety Donovan Wilson waiting on the spot for the recovery in opposing territory.

Gifted a short field, running back Tony Pollard got the offense moving with two first-down conversions then his counterpart came in and finished the job. Ezekiel Elliott finished the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, capitalizing on the defensive effort.

Kellen Moore dialed up the run game and only the run game on the scoring drive, with six rushes for 41 yards to force their will on the Jaguars. With Tyron Smith starting at right tackle, there was no drop-off from the offensive line, leading to the score.

T.Y. Hilton debut on hold as Cowboys, Jaguars inactives for Week 15 announced

Dallas welcomes back an eight-time Pro Bowler while T.Y. Hilton’s Cowboys debut will wait a week. | From @cdburnett7

After suffering a torn hamstring back in August, eight-time Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith is making his 2022 debut against the Jaguars in Week 15. The addition comes on the heels of a season-ending injury for right tackle Terence Steele, causing Dallas to toy with shifts on the offensive line.

Alongside Smith’s addition to the offense, wide receiver T.Y. Hilton will not make his Cowboys debut the week he was signed. The former Colt spent the week preparing and learning the offense to make his appearance possible, but it’ll have to wait a week. Hilton joined the roster a week after wide receiver James Washington made his debut.

The first overall pick will miss the contest after a strip-sack against the Titans in Week 14. Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker suffered an ankle injury and didn’t practice during the week, so Jacksonville is being conservative with their young star. Here’s the full list of inactives for Cowboys-Jaguars where Dallas is able to clinch playoffs with a win.

Advanced stats show Lawrence, Jaguars offense as Cowboys’ equal

As the Cowboys look to extend their winning streak, the Jaguars offense has developed and offers a closer matchup than meets the eye. | From @ProfessorO_NFL

The Dallas Cowboys survived a closer than expected game against the Houston Texans in Week 14. They need an Ezekiel Elliott touchdown run to cap off a 98-yard drive and an interception by second year safety Israel Mukuamu in the final moments of the game. That win gave the Cowboys double digit wins in back-to-back seasons for the first since 1996.

With the NFC East divisional title still within their sights, the Cowboys will travel to east Florida to face the Jacksonville Jaguars.  The Cowboys welcome back offensive tackle Tyron Smith who will make his 2022 debut this week and feature a new toy for Dak Prescott to throw to in veteran wide receiver T.Y. Hilton.

The 5-8 Jaguars have won two of their last three games and have an emerging second year quarterback in Trevor Lawrence that has thrown 10 touchdown passes with no interceptions over his last five starts. The Jaguars are still within reach of the AFC South division title and are two games back in the AFC wildcard picture.

Each week we open up the Advanced Stat Notebook to analyze how each team ranks in EPA, DVOA, ANY/A and Toxic Differential. These four key metrics have a high correlation to win probability.

Cowboys-Jaguars TV coverage maps, how to stream, listen, wager in Week 15

Lines are moving and after Saturday’s game there’s an update on the chances of a Dallas bye week. Check out the latest game info. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys will square off against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, looking to win their fifth-straight game on the season. It would be Dallas’ longest winning streak since winning six in a row from Week 2 through Week 8 of last year. Dallas had a four-game winning streak earlier this year, and their 10 wins on the season mark the first time in over two decades the franchise has won double-digit contests in back-to-back seasons.

The overall picture is pretty, but the Cowboys cannot afford to end up in the loss column on Sunday, and the Jaguars are capable of putting them their despite their record. Second-year QB Trevor Lawrence is hot and hasn’t thrown an interception since Week 8. Unfortunately, due to the Jaguars reputation, this game will not be seen by most of the country. Here’s how you’ll be able to catch the action on Sunday.

Kellen Moore’s play cadence among 3 keys to a Cowboys win over Jags

A trap game only to those not paying attention, here are the keys to beating a hot Jacksonville Jaguars team, according to @cdpiglet

At this late stage of an NFL season, teams are looking to consistently be playing their best brand of football. Unfortunately, both the Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars are more like Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Jacksonville once lost seven straight games including defeats at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders and even the one-win Houston Texans. On the other hand, the Jaguars are only two games back of the AFC South division lead by beating the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans in the last three weeks.

The Cowboys on the other hand go from mouse to juggernaut within a single game. Dallas can play the Colts even for three quarters and then blast them 33-0 in the fourth quarter. The Texans could outplay the Cowboys nearly all game, and then Dallas can follow a goal-line stand with a 98-yard game-winning drive.

This game has shaped up to be a great battle between two teams that need a win to stay in contention for their division. Here are the keys to Cowboys securing a playoff spot with a victory Sunday against the Jaguars.

Mike McCarthy: Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence ‘playing his best football’ as Cowboys visit

The Jaguars QB said a Week 8 loss “flipped a switch.” He hasn’t thrown a pick since and looks to keep his hot streak going vs. Dallas. | From @ToddBrock24f7

As a No. 1 draft pick, Trevor Lawrence had to know the losses would come. The lowly Jaguars had compiled the league’s worst record in 2020; that’s how they ended up first in line to take him in 2021.

And while the quarterback got off to a rocky start as a pro, completing fewer than 60% of his passes as a rookie and leading the league in interceptions, Lawrence may finally be getting back to looking like the player who won 34 of 36 college outings and was the MVP of a national championship team at Clemson.

Just in time for the Cowboys to ride in to town.

Forget Jacksonville’s 5-8 mark in the standings; Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy knows his 10-3 squad will get a stiff challenge when they face the player nicknamed “Sunshine” on their Florida visit this Sunday.

“Obviously, I recognize the success he had in college,” McCarthy said of the  second-year passer during a Thursday press conference. “But being a dual threat for the type of athlete he is- a 6’6″ quarterback- I’ve always been intrigued with that. His ability to play from within the pocket and then out of the pocket is, I would say, exceptional. Young quarterbacks, when they go through coordinator changes, that’s definitely a lot bigger challenge than people want to recognize. The point I’m making is that you can really see him starting to come into his own. Obviously, with [Jaguars head coach] Doug Pederson and the offense that they run- multiple personnel, multiple concepts- I think he’s definitely playing his best football this past month of his pro career.”

Lawrence thinks so, too.

The 23-year-old admitted this week that the team’s 21-17 loss to Denver back in Week 8 “flipped a switch” in him.

“I never forgot how I felt in that locker room,” Lawrence said via the Jaguars website, “because I never want to feel like this anymore.”

That game, played Oct. 30 in London, gave the Jaguars their fifth loss in a row. Lawrence, en route to a 52.2 passer rating on the day, threw two interceptions.

He hasn’t thrown one since.

But he has hurled 10 touchdowns, completed 71.8% of his passes, and amassed a 111.7 passer rating in the five games since, a remarkable turnaround.

Along the way, Jacksonville notched two big wins over Baltimore and Tennessee. Lawrence threw for 321 and 368 yards in those victories, respectively. For Sunday’s most recent win over the Titans, Lawrence was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

“Honestly, I have a little bit more of a chip on my shoulder now just because of the last year and a half,” Lawrence said. “I don’t really forget what’s been said and what people have written. Now you see people change their mind after a couple weeks. I don’t use that necessarily as my only fuel, but I definitely use that.”

The Cowboys defense will look to short-circuit that power surge. But after a dogfight against Indianapolis that lasted three full quarters and an unexpected thriller versus Houston that required an epic goal-line stand and late heroics from the Dallas offense to salvage, the team has looked suddenly shaky during this December run through the AFC South.

And now with Lawrence on a hot streak, Sunday’s outing in Jacksonville promises to be anything but a day at the beach.

The secondary will no doubt be tested even as they continue shuffling to make up for the losses of cornerbacks Jourdan Lewis and Anthony Brown. Kelvin Joseph, Nahshon Wright, and rookie DaRon Bland will attempt to hold down the fort alongside Trevon Diggs; the team has Kendall Sheffield on the practice squad and just added Trayvon Mullen off waivers on Wednesday.

All are young players looking to duplicate the successes they had at the college level and make the most of their moment on the NFL stage.

Just like Trevor Lawrence is starting to.

6 things to know about Cowboys next test, the improving Jaguars

A familiar foe will be on the opposite sideline on Sunday, while their young QB is on a hot streak. @BenGrimaldi presents what’s important to know about the Jaguars.

The Dallas Cowboys have taken different paths in beating AFC South opponents in the last two weeks. There was a blowout against the Indianapolis Colts, followed by a last-minute victory over the one-win Houston Texans. Their third-straight game against the division comes in Week 15 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After three straight home games, it’s the first road game for the Cowboys since they dismantled the Minnesota Vikings just before Thanksgiving. Dallas is 3-2 on the road this season and will get a test from the Jaguars, who are 5-8 on the year, and 3-3 at home.

The Cowboys shouldn’t be looking ahead to their big Christmas Eve matchup with the rival Philadelphia Eagles, or they could get upset by the Jaguars. Even with 10 wins this season, Dallas is searching for some consistency as they enter Week 15.

Here are six things to know about the Jaguars ahead of their Week 15 matchup.
