Cowboys timely takeaway spoiled by Prescott INT, Packers respond with score

The Cowboys had a lead and a short field, but an untimely turnover and Packers response knotted the score in Lambeau Field. | From @CDBurnett7

After the Cowboys gained the momentum with the first touchdown on the road, the Dallas defense capitalized with another of their timely takeaways. This time, it was defensive end Demarcus Lawrence who made the play.

Aaron Rodgers thought he saw an opening to scramble but Lawrence got off his block and crashed into Rodgers, forcing the ball out for safety Jayron Kearse to dive on deep in Packers territory.

Gifted with a short field, the Dallas offense had just ten yards to pick up for a touchdown. Two plays later, miscommunication on the backend from wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and tight end Dalton Schultz combined with an errant throw from quarterback Dak Prescott for an interception. The untimely turnover turned from bad to worse with Rodgers finding Christian Watson, who broke by cornerback Anthony Brown for a 58-yard touchdown to knot the game at seven.

Taking on the Packers defense and the freezing nature of Lambeau field, the Cowboys offense got off to a cold start coming off of the bye week with two short drives. The third possession looked similar until quarterback Dak Prescott barreled through defenders for a third-down conversion at the Dallas 39-yard line.

Coming off the momentum, the Cowboys churned for a long drive that totaled 17 plays and 83 yards, chewing off 8:21 of game time. Kellen Moore dialed up some nifty calls to shake up the Green Bay defense and did just that by putting wide receiver CeeDee Lamb in the backfield. The change caught the Packers off guard, and Prescott found Lamb for the first touchdown of the game.

Lamb’s score is his fourth of the season and the return of Prescott has favored his success as Dallas takes a 7-0 lead on the road.

Cowboys WR Gallup leaves game after non-contact injury

During the second quarter in Green Bay, Michael Gallup went down with a right leg injury and was taken to the medical tent for evaluation. | From @CDBurnett7

Update: After missing the first play of the next series, Gallup returned to the field.

The Cowboys awaited the return of wide receiver Michael Gallup after his 2021 was cut short by a torn ACL. Dallas expressed their belief in Gallup with a five-year contract during the offseason. The fifth-year receiver returned with a touchdown against Washington but hasn’t found form in 2022.

During the second quarter in Green Bay, Gallup ran a simple route in the red zone and started limping at the end of the play before going to the ground. He spent a short time on the ground before being taken immediately to the medical tent.

Gallup was seen favoring his right leg, opposite of the ACL tear he suffered on his left leg in January. His return status against the Packers is unknown and Noah Brown will be tasked with the No. 2 wide receiver role in his absence.

Dak Prescott passes Staubach on Cowboys’ passing list

Seven seasons into his NFL career, quarterback Dak Prescott has skyrocketed up the Cowboys record books. Early in the Week 10 matchup in Lambeau Field, Prescott completed a 21-yard pass to wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, moving up the food chain in Dallas history.

The 22,705-yard career to this point for Prescott has been an impressive one and now he’s passed Roger Staubach for third in Cowboys career passing yards. The next milestone is far away, with Troy Aikman at 32,942 passing yards for Prescott to chase in the coming yards.

Decision made on Ezekiel Elliott; Cowboys-Packers announce inactives

The Dallas Cowboys will be without their leading rusher on Sunday, as running back Ezekiel Elliott has been ruled out of the Week 10 contest against the Green Bay Packers. The seventh-year veteran will miss his second-straight game after sitting out the club’s 49-29 victory over the Chicago Bears two weeks ago.

The bye week was not enough rest for the back’s hyperextended knee suffered on a hit in Week 7 against the Lions. Instead, RB1A Tony Pollard will once again be the focus of the rushing attack, complimented by UDFA rookie Malik Davis. Practice squad callup Qadree Ollison will be the team’s third back.

Dallas waited until pre-game warmups to make the call, after Elliott was limited in practice throughout the week. Here’s a look at the complete list of inactives for both teams for Sunday’s contest.

Packers HC Matt LaFleur primed for reunion with former boss, Cowboys DC Dan Quinn

LaFleur credits Quinn with leading him to a head coaching job, but still wants to “kick his [expletive]” Sunday. | From @ToddBrock24f7

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”LeYwCdATd0-2351273-7498″]

The lead-up to Week 10’s Cowboys-Packers clash has been largely dominated by the obvious storyline of Mike McCarthy making his return to Green Bay, the city where he roamed the sidelines for nearly 13 years, a city he brought a Super Bowl championship to, a city where his wife is from and his daughters were born, a city where a street named for him leads to the stadium where on Sunday he’ll be- for the first time- a visitor.

That’s far from the only coaching connection happening at Lambeau Field in this hotly-anticipated matchup.

Granted, most of those ties come from McCarthy’s staff in Dallas. You need both hands to count the number of current Cowboys assistants who either coached with or played under McCarthy in Green Bay. It’ll be an emotional homecoming of sorts for them all.

But Sunday’s tilt will also have the Packers head coach feeling a little something extra, especially during pregame handshakes.

Matt LaFleur was a key member of Dan Quinn’s staff while the two were in Atlanta. While he credits Quinn for helping him climb the ladder to a head coaching gig of his own, LaFleur admits he’d love nothing more than to beat his old boss by getting his Packers offense to break out of an uncharacteristic slump against the Cowboys’ current defensive coordinator.

“I can tell you, honestly, I wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for Dan Quinn,” he told ESPN’s Ed Werder. “I learned so much from that man and hold him in the highest regard. I want to kick his [expletive], but I just have a lot of love for him.”

LaFleur served as the Falcons’ quarterbacks coach in Quinn’s first year with Atlanta. In his second season there, he helped Matt Ryan achieve league-leading numbers in passer rating and yards per attempt while coming within a whisper of 5,000 yards and earning a berth in Super Bowl LI.

Three days after the Falcons lost that title game in infamous fashion, LaFleur was named offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams. His offense was the top-ranked unit in the league that season; LaFleur moved to Tennessee the next season as OC and play-caller.

Less than a year later, he was hired as head coach in Green Bay, replacing Joe Philbin, the interim man who had been installed when McCarthy was fired a month prior.

And now it all comes full circle for McCarthy, Philbin, Quinn, and LaFleur when the Cowboys and Packers finally kick it off on the frozen tundra.

Cowboys-Packers TV coverage maps, how to stream, listen, wager in Week 10

Dallas will try to exorcise some Lambeau demons, with the warlock on their side this time. Here’s how to catch all the action. | From @KDDrummondNFL

There are only two NFC teams that have a all-time advantage over the Dallas Cowboys’ franchise; Green Bay and San Francisco. Dallas trails the 49ers 15-14-1 after January’s wild-card loss, but their deficit to the Packers is the worst of all conference foes, 16-13. A few years ago things were tied, but Green Bay has won the last three matchups between the two teams.

There’s reasons why despite the obvious on paper advantages, Cowboys fans are wary of Sunday’s matchup between the two storied franchises. Aaron Rodgers boasts a 7-3 all-time advantage over the Cowboys. All but one of those victories had Mike McCarthy at the helm (McCarthy also won with a backup), but on Sunday, he’ll be on the Cowboys side in his first trip back to Lambeau Field. There’s a street named after the head coach, but will he be able to find a path to Dallas’ third-straight victory on the season? Here’s how you’ll be able to keep up wit all of the action, whether watching, listening or streaming.

Advanced Stats: Aside from being toxic, Packers path to win over Cowboys is murky

The Dallas Cowboys will travel to Lambeau Field to play the Green Bay Packers in a game that features two teams with opposite trajectories. The 6-2 Cowboys are freshly rested from a bye week as seen from their relatively clean injury report that saw just one player, Anthony Barr, ruled out.  Running back Ezekiel Elliott will test his knee pregame, while safety Malik Hooker and defensive end Sam Williams return to action.

The 3-6 Packers have not been as fortunate, the injury bug has taken its toll on the team and they three more tests before they reach their bye week.  They have 16 players on the injury report, five who were ruled out includingLB Rashan Gary and CB Eric Stokes who will miss the rest of the 2022 season.

Each week we open up the Advanced Stat Notebook to analyze how each team ranks in EPA, DVOA, ANY/A and Toxic Differential. These four key metrics have a high correlation to win probability.

Cowboys 55-man roster vs Packers includes Elliott insurance

Ready to pack up the Packers’ season, the Cowboys have some reinforcements at their disposal on Sunday. A look at the active roster. | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys will be back in action in just over 24 hours from this article’s publication and not a moment too soon. After sitting out a week, it’s time to jump back into the water as they take on the Green Bay Packers in an attempt to win their third-straight contest. The club has made a couple of roster moves since the last time they saw the field. 2019 second-round pick Trysten Hill is gone, released following the game to clear a logjam at defensive tackle. The club has also welcomed back run-stuffing edge Tarell Basham.

It was widely rumored the team might look to trade Basham, who had been out since Week 1 but has been eligible to return for several games. Instead, they looked to trade Hill but found no suitors. Hill was claimed by Arizona, and will make his debut for them Sunday. Outside of activating Basham, Dallas has made a couple of callups from the practice squad. They are the same callups from Week 8, which is interesting because RB Ezekiel Elliott had been ruled out.

Elliott was listed on this week’s final injury report as questionable, but adding a fourth running back seems to indicate the team isn’t sure what he can do if he’s even going to play. He was to test the knee on Saturday, but Qadree Ollison is as good an indication as any that the knee still isn’t right.

Final Injury Report: Packers rule out 4 starters, Elliott to test knee Saturday

The Cowboys and Packers are in very different places as they are on a collision course to meet on Sunday afternoon. @KDDrummondNFL with a look at the report.

There’s only one question remaining on the Cowboys side of things. Will Ezekiel Elliott be cleared to play? The Dallas running back hyperextended his knee on a mid-air hit in Week 7’s game against the Detroit Lions. While Elliott finished the game, he was forced to sit out the team’s matchup with the Chicago Bears in Week 8, ahead of the team’s bye week. If Elliott does play, he will wear a supportive knee brace, but his status will be determined by Saturday’s work.

Overall though, the Cowboys are in a relatively strong spot after the week of rest with just one active-roster player being ruled out. Meanwhile the Packers’s injury situation is more dire. Green Bay has three players who are questionable, or worse, and another four who have been ruled out completely. Three of those players are starters, and that doesn’t even include their top pass rusher. Rashan Gary was placed on IR this week with a torn ACL. Here’s a look at each player who was listed on the injury report from each team.
