Dan Lanning offers injury update on freshman CB Dakoda Fields

True freshman corner Dakoda Fields is expected to miss some time this season due to a knee injury he suffered this week.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning held his mid-week press conference ahead of the season opener with Idaho and he had to announce some bad news.

Freshman corner Dakoda Fields, a 6-foot-2, 190-pounder out of Gardena, Calif., will be out for a little while with a knee injury and there’s no timetable for his return yet.

It’s a definite blow to the secondary as Fields, a four-star recruit, was expected to play some this year, but with this news, he will likely wind up redshirting the 2024 season.

The Ducks have been a bit lucky on the injury front so far as they are relatively healthy as Oregon prepares for Idaho on Saturday. Hopefully, for Oregon’s sake, the injuries stay far and few between as they head into the Big Ten Conference for the first time in 2024.

SIGNED: 4-star cornerback Dakoda Fields is officially a Duck

The Oregon Ducks officially signed 4-star cornerback Dakoda Fields, adding him to the 2024 class.

Ever since coming to Eugene, Dan Lanning and Demetrice Martin have been incredibly successful when it comes to recruiting and developing defensive packs, whether that is from the high school ranks or in the transfer portal.

They picked up another elite addition on Wednesday, with 4-star cornerback Dakoda Fields officially signing his letter of intent, joining the 2024 class. Fields is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 80 overall player and the No. 7 cornerback in the nation.

Fields is one of several blue-chip defensive backs to join the Ducks in this recruiting cycle, joining a long list of ball hawks who have committed to Oregon over the past couple of years.

Fields was originally committed to the USC Trojans, but flipped his commitment back in August after it was announced that Oregon could be joining the Big Ten starting in 2024, which was a factor in Fields’ recruitment.

The CB room is currently pretty loaded with young talent for the Ducks, but Fields will have an opportunity to come in and try to fight for a spot on the depth chart this spring.

Here’s a look at Fields’ highlights:

Dakoda Fields flip from USC to Oregon occurred because of Ducks’ Big Ten move

Dakoda Fields was direct in saying Oregon’s change of conferences was the reason he flipped from USC. That’s #B1G news.

If you wanted evidence that Oregon’s move to the Big Ten complicates recruiting for USC, look no further than the Dakoda Fields story. There isn’t a lot of subtlety or passive-aggressive double-talk here. Fields, who recently flipped from USC to Oregon and strengthened the Ducks’ 2024 secondary, was as direct as one could possibly be in noting the importance of Oregon’s move to the Big Ten as the reason for his change of schools:

(h/t Max Torres of Ducks Digest)

“Oregon’s move to the Big Ten in 2024 has been dominating headlines in recent weeks and the Ducks’ new conference may have been what pushed them over the edge.

“’A big role was actually the Big Ten,’ Fields said on the timing of his decision. ‘I was waiting on that for a long time. I didn’t want them to stay in the Pac-12 because I wanted to play against the best competition. Once they moved to the Big Ten, that was the green light for me.'”

Top-10 CB Dakoda Fields flips from USC to Oregon Ducks

Big-time get for the Ducks. 4-star Dakoda Fields, the No. 9 CB in 2024, is flipping from USC to Oregon.

Score one for Dan Lanning on the recruiting front in the ongoing rivalry against Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans.

On Monday night, 4-star cornerback Dakoda Fields announced that he would be flipping his commitment from USC, and committing to the Oregon Ducks instead. Fields is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 83 overall player in the 2024 class, and the No. 9 cornerback.

Fields committed to USC back in June, but was thought of as a potential get for the Ducks throughout his commitment. Despite his verbal to the Trojans, the Junipero Serra CB — a former teammate of Oregon’s Rodrick Pleasant — took an official to Eugene later in the summer, and ultimately ended up flipping to the Ducks.

Fields is the second CB to commit to the Ducks this cycle, joining 4-star Ify Obidegwu, who is rated as the No. 122 overall player and No. 11 CB. With those two, plus both Pleasant (No. 105 overall, No. 8 CB) and Daylen Austin (No. 134 overall, No. 11 CB) joining the class in 2023, the Ducks’ CB room looks to be stacked with talent for years to come.

USC football adds a trio of 4-star recruits to class of 2024

Everything seems to be coming up Trojans lately

Everything is coming up Trojans lately in the recruiting game, whether it’s basketball or football.

This past weekend USC added Clearwater (Fla.) three-star safety Jarvis Boatwright Jr., and since then, they’ve gotten commitments from three more recruits in the class of 2024, all with four-star ratings.

Here’s who they are, how they announced for the Trojans and where they are coming from at the high school level.

Junipero Serra (Calif.) CB Dakoda Fields

Fields (6-foot-2, 175 pounds) is the 10th-best cornerback in this class going by the composite rankings. He also ranks No. 10 overall in California and No. 78 nationally. Fields had offers from 25 other schools, including Miami, Oregon, Alabama and Georgia.

Washington (Ga.) EDGE Kameryn Fountain

Fountain (6-foot-5, 237 pounds) is also in the top 10 at his position, coming in at No. 7 at edge in the composite rankings. He ranks 11th in the state of Georgia and No. 78 nationally. 28 other programs made offers, including contenders at Georgia and Tennessee.

Central Catholic (Calif.) OT Manasse Itete

Itete (6-foot-5, 290 pounds) is ranked No. 12 among offensive tackles by 247Sports, as well as No. 14 overall in California and No. 143 nationally. He also had offers from 18 other schools, including Oregon, Cal, Utah and Washington State.

All together, these new additions have boosted USC’s national ranking up to No. 21.

Dakoda Fields reminds other Western programs that USC is still prominent

#USC might be leaving the #Pac12, but the Trojans can still win Western recruiting battles. Ask Dakoda Fields.

USC is building its 2024 recruiting class. The latest addition is 2024 Gardena (Calif.) Serra cornerback Dakoda Fields, who committed to the USC Trojans early in this recruiting cycle. He announced his decision Monday after his official visit in Los Angeles over the weekend.

Fields, who is listed at 6 foot 1 and 175 pounds, comes in this season ranked as a four-star overall recruit. The defensive back is also rated as the No. 78 player nationally, per the 247Sports.com composite. He’s the No. 10-rated cornerback.

Fields talked about his relationship with the Trojans program:

“Donte Williams is my guy, one of the coaches I’m closest with and he’s very easy for me to talk with. He’s someone I know who cares about me as a person and a player and we’ll always be close no matter where I go. I like the move to the Big Ten too and I know they’re excited about it as well.”

Fields choose the USC Trojans over: Oregon, Cal, Miami, Ohio State, Texas and Washington.

The fact that so many Western programs were in the mix for Fields is a reminder that while USC is leaving for the Big Ten, it still intends to win the West on the recruiting trail.
