Report: Texans working out former Broncos receiver DaeSean Hamilton

The Houston Texans are working out former Denver Broncos receiver DaeSean Hamilton, who missed the 2021 season with a torn ACL.

The Houston Texans are looking at ways to bolster their receiving corps in free agency.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans are working out former Denver Broncos receiver DaeSean Hamilton, who is expected to generate interest from teams on the open market.

The Broncos released Hamilton on March 8. The former 2018 fourth-round pick from Penn State had torn his ACL during offseason workouts in 2021 and was lost for the season.

From 2018-20, Hamilton caught 81 passes for 833 yards and five touchdowns through 46 career games, nine of which he started. The 6-1, 206-pound receiver’s best season came in 2020 when he caught 23 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns.

According to Spotrac, Hamilton was going to cost the Broncos $2,813,000 in 2022.

Report: Patriots showing interest in former Broncos wide receiver

The 27-year-old missed 2021 due to a torn ACL, but could have a high ceiling.

The New England Patriots are heavily pursuing options at receiver and linebacker this offseason — in the draft, free agency and via trade.

DaeSean Hamilton, who was released by the Denver Broncos on Tuesday, is a player the Patriots have interest in, according to Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal Journal. The 27-year-old tore his ACL in 2020 and missed the entire 2021 season.

The Patriots had interest in Hamilton ahead of the 2018 draft as he was one of the best receivers to come out of Penn State. He had a school-record 214 catches, along with 2,842 yards (second-most) and 18 touchdowns (fourth-most).

In three seasons with the Broncos, Hamilton totaled 81 receptions for 833 yards and five touchdowns.

Hamilton is mainly a slot receiver and had 4.3 40-yard dash speed before he sustained the injury. If the Patriots were to sign him, it would be on an affordable contract and he’d had to fight to make the roster in training camp.

He’s one of many receivers the Patriots currently have their eyes on.

Report: Broncos are releasing WR DaeSean Hamilton

DaeSean Hamilton missed all of last season with a torn ACL.

Tuesday has been a busy day for the Denver Broncos.

First, the Broncos learned that quarterback Aaron Rodgers is opting to remain with the Green Bay Packers instead of asking for a trade.

After the Rodgers news broke, Denver agreed to trade three players and multiple draft picks to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for Russell Wilson.

Now the Broncos are making another move and releasing wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

As Schefter noted on Twitter, Denver was prepared to trade Hamilton to the San Francisco 49ers last offseason before the receiver suffered a season-ending torn ACL, ending trade talks.

Hamilton was scheduled to have a salary cap hit of $2.183 million this season. Releasing him will give the Broncos some cap relief to help make room for Wilson’s contract (the three outgoing players will also clear up some cap space).

Hamilton has hauled in 81 receptions for 833 yards and five touchdowns in 46 career games in the NFL. He will turn 27 on Thursday.

Titans should explore trade for Broncos’ DaeSean Hamilton

The Titans could use depth behind A.J. Brown and Josh Reynolds.

It’s no secret that the Tennessee Titans still have needs at wide receiver, and while we fully expect them to address the position in the 2021 NFL draft, it wouldn’t hurt to add another receiver via free agency or a trade.

As far as the former avenue is concerned, there isn’t much to be inspired with when looking at the options on the open market. It’s for that reason that a trade might be the best bet if the Titans want to add another wideout.

One potential route the Titans could take is trading for Denver Broncos wide receiver and former fourth-round pick, DaeSean Hamilton.

In a recent segment on NFL Network, Mike Garafolo speculated that because the Broncos have good depth at the position, they might be interested in dealing Hamilton.

If that is indeed the case, the Titans should have interest.

Over his three years in the NFL, Hamilton has compiled 81 catches for 833 yards and five touchdowns, numbers that don’t exactly jump off the page at you.

However, he is still only 26 and has some upside in an offense that can offer him more touches, and the Titans don’t need him to steal the show, but rather provide reliable depth and experience behind A.J. Brown and Josh Reynolds.

At 6-foot-1 and 206 pounds, Hamilton offers great size for the position and has more NFL experience than most of the receivers currently on the roster. The Penn State product doesn’t qualify as a burner, but he isn’t slow, either.

As far as cost is concerned, we’d estimate the Titans could acquire Hamilton with a sixth-round pick, of which the team has two of in 2021. He’s worth taking a shot on at that price even though he might be a one-year rental.

Hamilton isn’t the only young receiver we’ve suggested trading for recently. In an article listing moves the Titans should explore ahead of the draft, we named Chicago Bears wide receiver Anthony Miller as someone the team should target after it was reported that he was on the trade block.

Jahan Dotson moving his way up list of Penn State’s all-time leading receivers

Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson is projected to finish in the top 10 among Penn State’s all-time leading receivers.

Penn State wide receiver has commented on how he wants to be a legend like Saqon Barkley before he leaves the Nittany Lions. One step toward becoming a legend would be to move his way up the list of Penn State’s all-time leading receivers with one final and full season in 2021.

Dotson will begin the 2021 season already in the top 20 in the Penn State record books for most career receiving yards. Dotson is 17th on the all-time list at Penn State, just behind his former teammate KJ Hamler. Dotson would have to turn in a record-setting single-season performance for Penn State to climb to the top of the list, as he is 1,451 receiving yards away from the Penn State career record of 3,026 yards held by Bobby Engram. Allen Robinson holds the single-season receiving record with 1,432 yards in 2013.

With Dotson setting his own personal goal to leave Penn State with legendary status, here is a look at the top 20 players in Penn State history with the most career receiving yards.

Broncos WR DaeSean Hamilton could take a jump in Year 3

Broncos wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton could step up this season.

If Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton (shoulder) isn’t able to play against the Titans on Monday, Jerry Jeudy and Tim Patrick will be the most likely candidates to see more action in Week 1.

Fans in Denver shouldn’t forget about DaeSean Hamilton, either. The 25-year-old receiver has had a quiet start to his career (58 catches for 540 yards and three touchdowns in two seasons) but Hamilton could be on the verge of a breakthrough this year.

Earlier this month, Sutton heaped praise on Hamilton.

“He’s always been a playmaker,” Sutton said on Sept. 1. “I don’t know if you remember me saying that last year, rookie year or whenever it was. When he and I got the opportunity to start, and it was just he and I, people were questioning if we were going to be able to make plays.

“People don’t know a lot about DaeSean, but the dude is a baller, a playmaker. He can run every route that you need him to run. He’ll catch the ball. He’s sure-handed and he’s a guy who can go out and make plays.”

With Jeudy and KJ Hamler joining a wide receiver room that already included a Pro Bowler in Sutton, Denver’s passing attack is loaded with potential. If Hamilton can step up and take a step forward this season, the Broncos’ wide receiver depth chart could rank among the NFL’s best.

Denver Broncos depth chart prediction: Wide receiver

Which wide receivers will make the Broncos’ 53-man roster?

As we continue our 2020 depth chart prediction series for the Denver Broncos, today we’re going to be looking at wide receiver.

Previously, we predicted the QBRB and TE depth charts.

WR1: Courtland Sutton

This is an obvious prediction. After making the Pro Bowl as an alternate last year, Sutton returns as Denver’s clear No. 1 receiver.

WR2: Jerry Jeudy

The Broncos’ first-round draft pick will instantly become the No. 2 receiver across from Sutton. Think of Sutton filling the old Demaryius Thomas role and Jeudy replacing Emmanuel Sanders.

WR3: KJ Hamler

A speedy receiver, Hamler appears poised to take over slot duties right away. In three-WR formations, Hamler will be the top candidate to line up between Sutton and Jeudy.

WR4: Tim Patrick

Patrick missed half of last season with an injury but he has proven to be a decent rotational WR when healthy. His size (6-4, 212 pounds) could help him beat out some of the WRs fighting for a roster spot.

WR5: Diontae Spencer

Spencer was a Pro Bowl alternate as a returner last season and he will likely keep that role even after the team drafted Hamler.

WR6: DaeSean Hamilton

Hamilton is going to have the fight of his life to make the Broncos’ roster this summer. Perhaps that’s exactly the motivation he needs to emerge as a reliable receiver for Denver.

WR7: Juwann Winfree

Winfree will have a shot to beat out Hamilton, especially if he looks good on special teams. After a disappointing rookie season, Winfree will have to have a great preseason to make the team.

WR8: Tyrie Cleveland

Cleveland is a longshot to make the active roster but he should be able to win a spot on the practice squad.

WRs 9-13: Fred Brown, Kelvin McKnight, Trinity Benson, Kendall Hinton and Zimari Manning

These five wide receivers will probably be competing for spots on the practice squad.

DaeSean Hamilton makes list of NFL players most likely to be cut or traded

DaeSean Hamilton might be in danger of not making the Broncos’ 53-man roster.

After the 2020 NFL Draft, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell published a list of the 32 players most likely to be cut or traded, one player from each team.

For the Denver Broncos, Barnwell listed wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton. Denver drafted Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler and the team already had Courtland Sutton so Barnwell believes Hamilton could be the odd man out at wide receiver.

“With Hamilton playing just one special-teams snap last season, he wouldn’t retain much value on the roster as Denver’s fourth or fifth wideout,” Barnwell wrote on ESPN.com.

Hamilton (6-1, 203 pounds) was selected by the Broncos in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Penn State. Over the last two years, he has averaged just 29 receptions per season with an average of 270 yards and 1.5 touchdowns per year.

Hamilton will likely be competing with players including Tim Patrick, Diontae Spencer, Juwann Winfree and Tyrie Cleveland for a spot on the 53-man roster. Last season, Denver carried six WRs on the initial roster.

Broncos WR DaeSean Hamilton has been like ‘a big brother’ for KJ Hamler

“He’s my big brother, my older brother, so I know he’ll help me,” Hamler said. “I’ll be under his wing learning.”

Broncos wide receivers DaeSean Hamilton and KJ Hamler were teammates at Penn State in 2017. After Denver selected Hamler in the second round of the NFL draft, Hamilton and Hamler will be reunited in Denver.

That’s welcomed news to Hamler, who considers Hamilton a big brother.

“I’ve been talking to him throughout this process,” Hamler said during a conference call with reporters on April 24. “I don’t know a lot, but DaeSean will help me out through it. He’s my big brother, my older brother, so I know he’ll help me. I’ll be under his wing learning.”

Hamilton was selected by the Broncos in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He has totaled 58 receptions for 540 yards and three touchdowns since then. This offseason, Hamilton will serve as a mentor for Hamler.

“I’ll be more comfortable going to an organization knowing I know somebody,” Hamler said. “He showed me the ropes as a freshman coming in at Penn State. I’ve always kept in touch with him.

“I’ve always looked up to him as a big brother, so actually getting to play with him at the best-of-the-best, seeing how he progressed from his redshirt freshman year to now. It’s going to be amazing.”

Projecting Broncos’ WR depth chart before the NFL draft

Here’s a look at the Broncos’ projected wide receiver depth chart going into the NFL draft.

With the 2020 NFL draft now less than a week away, here’s a quick look at the Denver Broncos’ projected wide receiver depth chart as it stands now:

WR1 Slot WR2
Courtland Sutton DaeSean Hamilton Tim Patrick
Juwann Winfree Trinity Benson Diontae Spencer
Fred Brown Kelvin McKnight

Clearly, wide receiver is a big position of need for Denver this offseason. Sutton made the Pro Bowl as an alternate last year and Patrick could be a solid WR3 but the Broncos desperately need a No. 2 receiver.

Many mock drafts have Denver selecting a receiver with the 15th overall pick in the draft — that wouldn’t be surprising. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Broncos select multiple receivers next week.

Denver will want to give young quarterback Drew Lock plenty of weapons to complement Sutton, Noah Fant, Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay. The Broncos will have 10 picks to use in the draft (April 23-25).
