Vikings’ D.J. Wonnum leaves on cart with leg injury

OLB D.J. Wonnum had to leave on the medical cart with an apparent left knee injury

Minnesota Vikings edge rusher and outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum leaves the game with an apparent left knee injury. Unfortunately, it may have been a non-contact injury as he injured himself as he planted to make a pass-rush move up the field. The medical cart was brought out to take him off the field.

D.J. Wonnum was having one of his best seasons since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of the University of South Carolina. Wonnum has 58 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, 15 quarterback hits and 8.0 total sacks in the first 14 games this season.

With this injury, the Vikings will have to rely on Pat Jones III and possibly rookie Andre Carter II to make up the production. Wonnum is the third Vikings to be ruled out as he joins wide receiver Jordan Addison and tight end T.J. Hockenson.

4 stat that defines Vikings through 12 games

There are many stats out there but these define the Vikings season through 12 games

We are at the crossroads of the Minnesota Vikings 2023 season.

Sitting at 6-6, the Vikings have both looked dead in the water and like a legit threat to win the NFC North. As things sit right now, they have lost their last two games after pulling out five straight wins, all without superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

The bye week comes at a good time for the Vikings. Jefferson just came off of injured reserve and will play against the Las Vegas Raiders in week 14. It also gives players like Akayleb Evans and Marcus Davenport one more week to get back onto the field.

As we reflect what is going on with the Vikings during the bye week, these stats are the ones that define them.

Stock up, Stock down in Vikings 12-10 loss vs. Bears

As the Vikings self-reflect on their bye week, there a few stocks that rose, while some have plummeted given their recent performances.

The Minnesota Vikings ended up losing a second straight game in heart-breaking fashion against the Chicago Bears 12-10.

In a game that is only suitable to watch as a comedy, Minnesota scored the lone touchdown as Josh Dobbs found tight end T.J. Hockenson for Minnesota’s go-ahead score with just under six minutes to go in the game.

With the way that the defenses were playing, that should have been enough.

It wasn’t.

The Bears made just enough plays down the stretch to send the Vikings licking their wounds as they head into a much-needed bye week.

As Minnesota takes its time to self-reflect, let’s look at whose stocks rose despite the ugly showing and whose stocks sank alongside the putrid performance.

Vikings defensive PFF grades in loss vs. Broncos

The Pro Football Focus grades are in for the Minnesota Vikings defense and they reflect well on Brian Flores’ unit

The Minnesota Vikings couldn’t pull out the victory against the Denver Broncos on Sunday night falling by a score of 21-20. The loss drops the Vikings to 5-5 in one-score games after going 11-0 in one-score games in 2022.

The grades are in from Pro Football Focus and reflect well on the defense, who performed well against the Russell Wilson led offense.

Studs and duds from Vikings 21-20 loss vs. Broncos

There were plenty of standout performances that we highlighted in the latest studs and duds

The Minnesota Vikings had the turnover bug bite them once again as they fall 21-20 to the Denver Broncos on Sunday night.

Even with the turnovers, the Vikings had chances to win. They could have gone up nine instead of five but they kicked a field goal. They could have driven down the field and won the game with a field goal, but they stalled out.

Yes, there were some missed penalty calls and the defense played well, but the Vikings can only blame themselves.

Throughout the game, there were multiple good and poor performances. Here are the studs and duds from Sunday’s game.

4 defensive keys for Vikings vs. Broncos

The Vikings defense has been a much-improved unit this season. To stop a surging Broncos offense, they need to follow these keys.

The Minnesota Vikings go on the road to Mile High Stadium to face the Denver Broncos in primetime on Sunday at 7:20 p.m. CST.

These are two of the hottest teams in the National Football League with the Vikings on a five-game winning streak and the Broncos on a three-game winning streak. They face off in an important game with both being potential wild-card teams.

Denver is coming off of a monumental win against the Buffalo Bills that has them back in playoff talks, as they are only a game out of the seventh seed.

Minnesota controls their destiny as they have a 1.5-game lead on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the NFC’s third and final wild-card spot.

Denver’s success has come from a resurgence from the offense that has them 10th in EPA/dropback and 11th in EPA/rush since their winning streak started in week seven.

It will be a difficult task for Brian Flores and this Vikings team to get them off track. But to do it, they will need to follow these four keys.

Josh Dobbs and Jayden Daniels in 2024? Purple Daily on Draft

Purple Daily on Draft discusses the Vikings future at quarterback, edge rusher and what to make of Josh Dobbs’ future in Minnesota

The Minnesota Vikings once again have a quarterback conundrum with a backup quarterback. Case Keenum came out of nowhere in 2017 to lead the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game and made the quarterback decision going into 2018 a difficult and fascinating one.

The performance of Josh Dobbs through two weeks already has the discussion of a contract extension coming into focus. Has he done enough to earn an extension? Should the Vikings even consider that after just seven quarters of football?

The edge rusher position is also in flux. Danielle Hunter is proving to be dominant and D.J. Wonnum is coming into his own during his fourth season. With those two and Marcus Davenport about to become free agents, how should the Vikings handle the room with both free agency and the NFL draft?

Lastly, the emergence of Jayden Daniels is coming into focus. How does his success impact how we view this quarterback class?

All of that and more on the latest episode of Purple Daily on Draft, dropping every Monday afternoon on the Purple Daily YouTube channel.

Studs and duds from Vikings 27-19 win vs. Saints

The Minnesota Vikings had a lot of studs in their 27-19 win over the New Orleans Saints

What a way for the Minnesota Vikings to get their fifth-straight win. They beat the New Orleans Saints by a score of 27-19 and they made things interesting in the second half.

After jumping out to a 27-3 lead early in the third quarter, the Saints scored the final 16 points and had multiple opportunities to get the final eight points. The Vikings defense held their ground throughout the fourth quarter, intercepting quarterback Jameis Winston twice to help seal the game.

Looking at the game, it’s hard to find a lot of faults with how the players performed. Today’s rendition of studs and duds will focus much more on the studs with only a singluar dud.

D.J. Wonnum fined for hit on Jordan Love

Wonnum became the fifth Minnesota Vikings player fined this season

The Minnesota Vikings’ defense got hit with another fine on Saturday afternoon. According to The Star Tribune’s Andrew Krammer, Vikings outside linebacker D.J. Wonnum was fined $16,282 for his sack of Jordan Love.

You can see the hit below in Krammer’s tweet.

The reason Wonnum was fined is likely due to how he lands on Love at the end of the play. That is something that the NFL has been adamant you can’t do. They added that to the roughing the passer penalty language a few years ago to help keep quarterbacks safer.

There are plenty of these penalties called throughout the course of the game. Some of them are a little egregious and don’t qualify to the rule, but this one should have been called on the field. Wonnum’s weight landed right on Love and that is something you cannot do.

Wonnum is the fifth Vikings player fined this season and the sixth overall fine.
