*DNP = Did Not Participate — LP = Limited Participant — FP = Full Participant*

Notes

  • RB Zack Moss appeared to have a setback with his forearm injury so the Colts will be down a player in the backfield.
  • WR Michael Pittman Jr. is expected to play after clearing the concussion protocol but considering what happened last week, this is still a situation to monitor.
  • RT Braden Smith is expected to make his return from a three-game absence (really four) after practicing in full all week. Still, he’s listed as questionable.
  • CB Kenny Moore II popped up on the injury report Friday with a new injury so that will certainly be something to monitor.

Colts promote WR D.J. Montgomery to the active roster

D.J. Montgomery gets a promotion to the active roster.

The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receiver D.J. Montgomery from the practice squad to the active roster, the team announced Thursday.

Montgomery used his three standard elevations from the practice squad. If the Colts wanted him to be active on gamedays, they would need to sign him to the roster. This also gives the team a No. 5 wide receiver after Juwann Winfree was waived.

In a corresponding move, guard Arlington Hambrught was waived. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Hambright made his way back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Colts’ Grover Stewart activated from suspended list

Grover Stewart has officially been activated.

The Indianapolis Colts activated defensive tackle Grover Stewart from the suspended list and waived wide receiver Juwann Winfree, the team announced Saturday.

Stewart just concluded a six-game suspension for violating the league’s PED policy. He will slot right into his typical starting role as the one-technique defensive tackle next to DeForest Buckner.

Also, the Colts elevated running back Tyler Goodson and wide receiver D.J. Montgomery from the practice squad to the active roster for the Week 14 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Goodson will provide some depth and special teams contributions with Jonathan Taylor (thumb) still on the mend. Montgomery also will work on special teams as the No. 5 wide receiver on the game-day roster.

Colts elevate RB Tyler Goodson, WR D.J. Montgomery for Week 13

The Colts elevated two players from the practice squad for Week 13.

the Indianapolis Colts elevated running back Tyler Goodson and wide receiver D.J. Montgomery ahead of the Week 13 matchup against the Tennessee Titans, the team announced Saturday.

Goodson will serve as the No. 3 running back with Jonathan Taylor ruled out due to a thumb injury that required surgery. The Colts will lean on Zack Moss to carry the load while Trey Sermon works as the backup.

This is Montgomery’s second consecutive elevation from the practice squad. He will serve as the No. 6 wide receiver working mostly on special teams.

Colts elevate WR D.J. Montgomery for Week 12

D.J. Montgomery has been elevated from the practice squad for Week 12.

The Indianapolis Colts elevated WR D.J. Montgomery from the practice squad to the active roster for the Week 12 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team announced Saturday.

Montgomery is the only player being elevated for Sunday’s game and will serve as the sixth wide receiver in what is a fully healthy room coming out of the bye week.

The Colts will need to lean on their passing attack against a Bucs defense that has struggled for the better part of the last two months against the air. The Bucs are allowing the second-most passing yards per game and the fourth-most passing yards per play in the NFL.

Montgomery likely will serve in a special teams role while the focal point of the passing attack will rest on the shoulders of Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs.

Colts sign 17 players to the practice squad

Here’s a look at the initial practice squad for the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts have made their initial roster cuts to get down to 53 players, and now they’ve filled out their practice squad.

The team announced Wednesday that they signed 16 players to the practice squad, and it was reported by Jordan Schultz of The Score that they added an extra player.

It should be noted that the Colts essentially have 17 spots because Marcel Dabo gives the team a roster exemption as a part of the International Player Pathway Program.

Here are the specifics of the practice squad:

  • 16 players
  • Up to 10 players with two or fewer accrued seasons
  • Up to six veterans (no limit on how many years in the league)
  • Practice squad players may be elevated for gamedays a maximum of three times in a season

There will be constant movement on the practice squad throughout the season, but this is what the initial group looks like.

Colts waive WR D.J. Montgomery

The Colts are waiving WR D.J. Montgomery.

The Indianapolis Colts waived WR D.J. Montgomery ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for roster cuts, first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Despite signing with the Colts the day prior to the second preseason game, Montgomery did his best to make the most of his work with the third-team offense. He led all Colts receivers with five receptions and 75 receiving yards despite joining the team so late.

Montgomery is a candidate to be signed to the practice squad if he clears waivers so that will be something to watch for Wednesday when the waiver period is concluded.

The Colts have until Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET to finalize their initial 53-man roster. You can stay up to date with the latest moves via our tracker.

8 toughest cuts from our final Colts’ 53-man roster projection

These were the toughest cuts from our Colts’ final roster projection.

The Indianapolis Colts have until Tuesday afternoon to cut the roster down to 53 players as the preseason officially comes to an end.

This is no easy task, and there will be plenty of surprises along the way. After three preseason games and joint practices with two separate teams, the Colts have to use all the information they’ve gathered to compile the best collection of 53 players moving forward.

The process, of course, doesn’t end with the initial 53-man roster, and it’s likely that changes will come immediately the day after through the waiver wire.

As we went through with our final roster projection ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, there were some difficult choices made regarding players on the roster bubble. It could be due to the fact that they played well in a crowded room or they didn’t show quite enough to be worthy of a spot.

Here’s a look at the eight toughest cuts we made in our final roster projection for the Colts:
