Cuonzo Martin returns to former school

Former Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin returns to former school.

Cuonzo Martin was hired as Missouri State’s men’s basketball head coach on Wednesday.

“Zo is an experienced coach who has consistently won at the Division I level,” Missouri State director of athletics Kyle Moats said. “One of the things that stands out about him is that he really wants to be at Missouri State. He is respected both nationally and here in our community, and he brings instant credibility to our program. His track record with our donors, our fans and our students will make this an easy transition. In my opinion, there was not a better coach out there to lead our young men.”

Martin served as Missouri State’s head coach from 2008-11, compiling a 61-41 record.

He left Missouri State to serve as Tennessee’s head coach. Martin was with the Vols from 2011-14 and compiled a 63-41 record and appeared in one NCAA Tournament.

Missouri athletics director Desireé Reed-Francois discusses Cuonzo Martin’s firing as the Tigers’ head coach.

Missouri (12-21, 5-13 SEC) has relieved Cuonzo Martin of his duties as head coach.

Martin served as Missouri’s head coach for five seasons.

He compiled a 78-77 record with the Tigers and reached the NCAA Tournament in 2018 and 2021. Missouri was eliminated in the first round on both occasions.

Martin served as Tennessee’s head coach from 2011-14.

“Coach Martin represented the University with an extremely high level of class and dignity,” Missouri athletics director Desireé Reed-Francois announced. “He is a man of high character whom I have the upmost respect for, and we are grateful for his contributions to our program, on and off the floor.

“He is not only a coach, but is a teacher, and he has impacted the lives of every student-athlete who came through the program over the last five years. We wish him, Roberta, and their family nothing but the best in the future.”

Cuonzo Martin, Missouri topple Tennessee

Recapping Tennessee’s SEC loss to Missouri Saturday night.

The Southeastern Conference losing streak reached two games for the University of Tennessee men’s basketball team Saturday night.

The No. 6 Volunteers hosted No. 19 Missouri at Thompson-Boling Arena and the Tigers avenged their earlier loss to the Big Orange by capturing a 73-64 victory.

In the earlier meeting, an SEC opener for both schools, the Vols opened a 24-5 lead en route to a 73-53 victory.

Well, the Tigers (10-2, 4-2 SEC) made sure that they wouldn’t have a repeat performance as they darted out to a 17-5 advantage and forced UT (10-3, 4-3) into an uphill battle all night.

Missouri, which led 40-34 at halftime, never trailed in the contest.

It was also a dubious first for Tennessee as Missouri’s Xavier Pinson scored 27 points and became the first opposing player to record 20 points on the Vols’ defense this season.

Pinson had 19 points at halftime as Tennessee committed 10 turnovers in the first eight minutes of the game. Missouri guard Dru Smith scored 18 points.

Yves Pons had a season-high 20 points for Tennessee. He scored 15 points before halftime.

Victor Bailey Jr. and Josiah-Jordan James scored 12 points each.
