Lion ignores a potential wildebeest buffet to tend to its ‘lost’ cubs

Adorable video from South Africa shows the mother lion calling in her six missing cubs while the prey nervously look on.

Despite a herd of wildebeest nearby, a mother lion made no effort to chase prey, instead concentrating on calling her “missing” cubs to her so she could provide them with dinner.

The adorable video was captured by Jaco Joubert, a guide with MalaMala Game Reserve in South Africa and shared by LatestSightings.

“She let out low-frequency contact calls, and the group and guide knew that if they followed her, they were going to be in for a treat,” LatestSightings stated. “She was heading from the open plains to a more thick, dense bush.

“Scanning the direction she was heading, it was extremely thick, and there was no movement to be seen. Mom picked up her pace, showing a look of nervousness on her face, perhaps due to the presence of other large game near where her babies were stashed. After waiting some time to see where mom was heading, the group began to get nervous that maybe the cubs were very well hidden. And when mom eventually reaches them, it might be too thick to see them.

“But just then, from the corner of the guide’s eye, he saw movement! It was a tiny lion cub, with the tufts of hair on his ears barely visible in the long grass. One, then two, then three, and they just kept coming until a total of six tiny cubs came running and calling in the cutest manner, trying to respond to their mom!

“The cubs looked like they were trying to say, ‘Here, mom, we are over here.’ They ran as fast as their short, tiny legs could take them. Mom found a comfortable place next to the road in the open and sat patiently for them. They were so excited at this point that they were jumping and hopping with a bounce in their step!

“As soon as they reached their mom, they tackled her and jumped on top of her! They wanted milk; they were like little kittens, purring and wagging their tails. Each of the little cubs fell perfectly into place as soon as mom turned on her side, and they began suckling. Not bothered by the group’s presence, mom and babies were having a moment of bonding and love.”

Happy birthday to a Notre Dame football great!

Which sport was he better at?

In the long history of Notre Dame football, one of the very best wide receivers to ever wear blue and gold never played on Sundays.

Well, football at least.

Jeff Samardzija played at Notre Dame from 2003-2006, earning All-American status in his junior and senior seasons. He totaled 2,593 receiving yards for the Irish; 2,266 of those came in his junior and senior seasons.

Samardzija also starred on Notre Dame’s baseball team as a pitcher and he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2006. He bypassed a career in the NFL, instead making his way to Major League Baseball in 2008 and lasting there until 2020.

Looking back there is a case to be made that Samardzija was the MVP of the first two years of the Charlie Weis era when Notre Dame wound up in back-to-back BCS games.

It’s hard to believe, but the former two-sport star for the Fighting Irish turns 39 today.  Happy birthday to The Shark!

Chicago Cubs at Detroit Tigers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Chicago Cubs at Detroit Tigers odds and lines, with MLB expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Chicago Cubs (64-59) hit the road to take on the Detroit Tigers (57-67) as the teams open a 3-game series at 6:40 p.m. ET on Monday at Comerica Park. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Cubs vs. Tigers odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting since Cubs won 2 of 3 in 2021

The Cubs were 5 games under .500 at the All-Star break, but have been playing very well since then. They now sit just 3 games back in the NL  Central and have a tenuous grip on the last Wild-Card spot.

The Tigers just took 3 of 4 games in a weekend series at Cleveland and are 8-4 in their last 12 contests.

Cubs at Tigers projected starters

RHP Javier Assad vs. RHP Alex Faedo

Assad (2-2, 3.11 ERA) makes his 23rd appearance (5th start). He has a 1.25 WHIP, 3.8 BB/9 and 6.6 K/9 in 66 2/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 6 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 4 H, 2 BB, 4 K in 4-3 win Wednesday over the Chicago White Sox
  • Road stats: 2-0, 2.14 ERA in 21 IP, thanks in large part to a .197 BABIP, as he boasts a weak 7/6 K/BB on the road
  • Never faced the Tigers before
  • In his 4 starts he has posted a 3.20 ERA in 19 2/3 IP, though he has recorded just 12 K (5.5 K/9)

Faedo (2-4, 5.16 ERA) makes his 10th start. He has a 0.99 WHIP, 2.2 BB/9 and 8.1 K/9 in 45 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: No-decision, 5 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 K in 5-3 loss Tuesday at the Minnesota Twins
  • Home stats: 2-3, 6.16 ERA (30 2/3 IP, 21 ER), 8.8 K/9, 6 HR allowed (1.8 HR/9)
  • Never faced the Cubs before

Cubs at Tigers picks and predictions

Prediction

Cubs 6, Tigers 4

Moneyline

Faedo threw a gem last time out, but has been really up and down. In his last 5 starts he has held the opposition scoreless on 2 occasions but allowed 16 ER in 12 2/3 IP in the other 3 outings.

Chicago has the much better offense and should find ways to put some runs on the board against Faedo and the Tigers, who have a .441 winning percentage at home that is 5th worst in the league. Back the CUBS -130.

Run line/Against the spread

Assad has a low ERA, but the skills don’t support his success to this point. The lack of swing-and-miss stuff will make it nearly impossible to maintain his current ratios. The Detroit offense is 29th in runs per game but Assad won’t completely shut them down. This lines up to be a close game and it is recommended to PASS on the run line.

Over/Under

The Cub offense has cooled off lately, with just 43 runs in their last 11 games. But for the season they rank 9th in wRC+ vs. right-handed pitching, and they will square off this evening against a homer-prone pitcher in Faedo who is sporting a 1.8 HR/9.

On the other side, the Detroit offense is one of the weakest in the league, but they have fared better lately, with 53 runs in their last 12 games (4.4 per game). Regression is coming soon for Assad and the Tigers should do their part in pushing this total OVER 9 (+100).

Fernando Tatis danced when Cubs fans chanted ‘he’s on steroids’ and it’s such a vibe

Fernando Tatis Jr. doesn’t care about your silly chants, Cubs fans

Fernando Tatis Jr. has taken a whole bunch of trash talk from a whole bunch of people over the last year.

Obviously, the dude was dinged by Major League Baseball for taking steroids in 2022. He was suspended by the league for 80 games after being caught with a banned substance in his system.

We were all shocked and disappointed by it. Nobody wants to see anyone cheating the system — especially one of the best players in baseball. But it happened. The Padres issued a statement on it. Tatis accepted it.

But not everyone is apparently ready to move on. A minor league pitcher called Tatis a cheater after he hit a homerun during a rehab assignment. And, now, you’ve even got Cubs fans coming at him.

During a Padres matchup against Tatis, fans began chanting “cheater” at him while he was in the outfield. It was extremely petty.

But Tatis didn’t care. The dude just started vibing out and dancing. It was hilarious.

My guy was having a great time, man.

Good for him, man. Enough is enough. He got caught. He didn’t win anything and he also didn’t play baseball. He’s done his time and paid the price. We can all move on now.

Besides, Cubs fans have some nerve. Isn’t Sammy Sosa their guy? We can’t pick and choose who we like and don’t like for this stuff. That’s not how this works.

Anyway, shoutout to Tatis. Hope he has a great season.

Dansby Swanson got emotional while explaining how him signing with the Cubs created a special connection with his grandfather

This story from Dansby Swanson will move you to tears.

Often times when we’re in the midst of the offseason in any sport, it’s easy for us to forget as fans that the players are human beings, too.

They’re not just people who are signing with teams for no other reason than to just win a championship. Sure, that’s a huge part of it. But there are often so many more underlying reasons players make the free agency decisions they make.

Dansby Swanson had one of the sweetest reasons you’ll ever hear.

Swanson made the jump from his hometown team of the Atlanta Braves to the Chicago Cubs this offseason. It seemed to be a weird decision considering he seems like a guy who loved playing for his hometown team.

But there was another reason he signed with the Cubs and it was so touching. It was to form a new, special connection with his grandfather who recently died.

“Malorie [his wife] and I got married on December 10. The next morning we found out that my grandfather was not doing so well…and so we pretty much left our wedding venue the next morning and drove home. And, basically, had to rush over to the senior living facility where he was at…and he ended up passing away the day after I got married.”

That, alone, is just gut-wrenching. Losing a loved one the day after you get married is unimaginable. Going through that had to be incredibly difficult for the Swanson family.

But here’s why him being a cub means so much. He continued:

“Every day when I would come home from school I would run up to his house and pretty much demand that he come outside and hit me ground balls. But every time we walked in he would have a Cubs game on, back when it was on WGN…And I was like ‘Pops, we’re in Atlanta dude. We’re Braves fans.’ All he ever wanted me to be was doing what I’m doing now. So, having won a championship in Atlanta for one of his favorite teams, we just felt that the Cubs, which were his second favorite team, that bringing a championship to this city is what we felt called to do.”

What an amazing story. So many fans were moved by this.

Watch: Lioness, four cubs create ‘cutest traffic jam ever’

Recent footage captured in South Africa’s Kruger National Park shows a momma lion gracefully leading four cubs along a paved road while tourists in vehicles follow closely behind.

Recent footage captured in South Africa’s Kruger National Park shows a momma lion gracefully leading four cubs along a paved road while tourists follow closely behind.

“Watch as a Lioness and her 4 furry cubbies cause the cutest traffic jam ever in Kruger National Park,” Wildest Kruger Sightings described Tuesday on Facebook.

The lioness, stately and confident, pauses briefly to monitor her surroundings and check on her cubs. While some vehicles appear to be following too closely, the lions seem accustomed to their presence and pay them little mind.

Ultimately, momma lion leads the cubs off the road and through the brush, and back onto another section of road.

ALSO: Can you spot the coyote blending into the Texas prairie?

Among the most popular comments:

–“Beautiful sighting! The Queen of the wild took her adorable cute cubs for a walk… it is so wow!”

–“Even as babies, they walk like Lions!”

–“Too many vehicles for my likeness but adorable lion family!”

The third sentiment was echoed by others in the comment thread.

Wildest Kruger Sightings did not disclose the identity of the videographer.

Dylan Cease perfectly predicted a Tim Anderson home run while mic’d up for the White Sox

‘Bro there ain’t gonna be any home runs today’

Dylan Cease is not exactly known for being a loudmouth. One of the quieter players in the White Sox clubhouse, Cease is talented enough to let his game do the talking.

That’s gone quite well so far this year, too, with the Cy Young candidate putting up a healthy 2.48 ERA and 0.93 WHIP with 39 strikeouts on 10 walks in 29 innings.

Yet, for some reason, the White Sox decided to put a microphone on Cease in the dugout for Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Despite it being a dreadfully cold and misty night on the North Side, Cease let loose a prediction that will be hard to top this year: he nailed not only that Tim Anderson would hit a home run, but called out exactly where it would land in the Wrigley Field bleachers.

Even teammate Lucas Giolito didn’t think it was possible given the weather—the ace simply predicted a base hit to right. Instead, Anderson obliterated a first-pitch cutter straight over the Sloan sign in right like Cease said he would.

It might not be the most famous called shot in Wrigley Field’s history, but it’s certainly up there.

Considering Anderson’s over 1.5 total base prop at Tipico was set at +112, we might need Cease to start speaking up more.
