Where does Alabama’s QB room rank among other elite teams in 2024?

Alabama returns starting QB Jalen Milroe and has some respectable depth, but how does it compare to other teams?

Before the 2023 college football season, there was great uncertainty regarding the quarterback position for the Alabama Crimson Tide. A three-man battle between Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson and Tyler Buchner ensued, but it was Milroe who won the job. Ahead of the 2024 season, fans are excited to see what the incumbent starter will perform.

One of the things that makes college football special is the constant rotation of players. Whether they lose eligibility, declare for the NFL draft or transfer, there will always be players coming and going from each program. The quarterback position is no exception to this.

Milroe finished the 2023 season with enough Heisman Trophy votes to finish No. 6 in the final tally. In 2024, he’ll look to win it all and then some. Not only is Milroe a candidate for the coveted trophy, but he’s also viewed by experts as a possible early first-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Recently, Pro Football Focus (PFF) put together a ranking of the 10 best quarterback rooms in all of college football for the upcoming season. Milroe and his fellow quarterbacks on the roster have the Crimson Tide ranked No. 5 in the nation.

“Alabama might be losing the greatest coach of all time in Nick Saban, but the team still returns a top-five quarterback in college football. Jalen Milroe is a big play waiting to happen with his elite tools. The redshirt sophomore ranked second in the nation with a 9.2% big-time throw rate in 2023, and his 35 runs of 10-plus yards were the fourth most among FBS quarterbacks. Milroe’s 96.9 passing grade on deep throws trailed only Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, as well.”

While the focus may be primarily on Milroe as the starter, Pro Football Focus also gives credit to the depth first-year head coach Kalen DeBoer will have in Tuscaloosa.

“Ty Simpson will once again serve as his backup, impressing in that role with an 83.5 grade on 93 snaps last year. He was also a five-star recruit and the second-ranked quarterback in the 2022 class. The Crimson Tide also have a pair of quarterbacks from the 2023 class who were top-20 recruits at the position in Dylan Lonergan and Washington transfer Austin Mack.”

The only teams ahead of Alabama in the rankings are the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes, No. 3 Texas Longhorns, No. 2 Oregon Ducks and No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs.

Alabama will be under a microscope throughout the 2024 season, as fans and analysts are curious to see how the team performs in its first season without legendary head coach Nick Saban in nearly two decades. The performance of the team will rely heavily on Milroe to orchestrate a DeBoer-led offense.

Alabama’s offensive line ranks No. 1 in the nation for 2024

Alabama football’s offensive line is being praised as the top OL unit in all of college football.

The upcoming 2024 college football season for the Alabama Crimson Tide will be interesting. A handful of key contributors departed for the NFL, while others left via the transfer portal upon hearing of legendary head coach Nick Saban’s decision to retire. While some fans are unsure how to feel about certain positional units, there is one that is being praised as the best in the nation.

Alabama’s offensive line was recently ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to Pro Football Focus, which ranked the top 10 offensive line units in all of college football.

With a quarterback as versatile as Jalen Milroe, protecting him from pass rushers, and allowing him to read the field is a must. In 2023, many fans had complaints about the performance of the offensive line, especially at center.

As the team prepares for 2024, it seems as if new head coach Kalen DeBoer was able to piece together an offensive line that has experience and a proven track record of success.

The line took a big hit early in the offseason as high-profile, former five-star recruit Kadyn Proctor announced his decision to enter the transfer portal and return to his home state of Iowa to play for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Just a few weeks later, however, Proctor re-entered the transfer portal and re-committed to the Crimson Tide. This was one of the biggest moves of the offseason for the team.

DeBoer also managed to recruit former Washington Huskies center Parker Brailsford, who played under DeBoer at Washington. Issues snapping the football in 2023 led many to believe that opportunities were missed and Milroe was being limited in what he could do, having to field low snaps and chasing untimely snapped footballs.

Pro Football Focus has high praise for Alabama’s offensive line in 2024, writing,

“All three of Alabama’s projected starters on the interior made PFF’s list of the top returners at the position: Parker Brailsford (No. 1), Tyler Booker (No. 3) and Jaeden Roberts (No. 7).

“They also return sophomore left tackle Kadyn Proctor, who transferred from Alabama to Iowa and back to Alabama, all in a span of three months. The former top-10 recruit’s freshman season was a roller coaster, as he earned a 76.3 PFF grade in the final seven games after posting a 54.5 mark in the first seven.”

While many are unsure where to place expectations for Alabama in the 2024 season, there should be very high hopes for what this offensive line will be capable of. It is far from flashy, but the line is the reason why Milroe will be able to make the highlight-worthy plays and how massive game-changing runs can take place.

Why C.J. Stroud believes John Metchie III is poised for a breakout season in 2024

Former Alabama WR John Metchie III is ready to make an impact for the Houston Texans in 2024 and QB C.J. Stroud details why.

In the second round of the 2022 NFL draft, the Houston Texans used the No. 44 overall pick to select former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver, John Metchie III. After two seasons with the franchise, he is now poised to step up into a role where he can consistently contribute and showcase his talents.

Though he had suffered a torn ACL in the SEC championship game just a few months prior to being drafted, the biggest concern for Metchie came from a cancer diagnosis, acute promyelocytic leukemia. While receiving treatment, Metchie missed the 2022 NFL season. A year later, he returned to the team and played a limited role throughout the 2023 season.

Last season, Metchie appeared in 16 games and tallied 16 receptions for 158 yards. A stark contrast from his production at Alabama, where his final season featured a stat line of 93 receptions, 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns.

As he prepares for the upcoming 2024 season, his teammates aren’t shying away from warning the league about what’s to come from Metchie.

Texas quarterback, C.J. Stroud may only have one season under his belt, but he’s been spectacular. The former Ohio State Buckeyes QB was the 2023 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, was selected to the Pro Bowl and was named as a member of the PFWA All-Rookie team.

Recently, Stroud spoke with media members and took a moment to talk about Metchie. Regarding his playing abilities, Stroud stated, “He’s running some of the best routes I have ever seen.” However, that’s not all Stroud touched on. The young quarterback also noted Metchie’s ability to overcome adversity with all that he’s been through.

Stroud and Metchie will be an interesting QB-WR duo to watch through ought the upcoming 2024 season, as will the Houston Texans overall. The relatively young team consists of star power at various levels of experience. In the AFC South, Houston is the team to beat.

A shift in Alabama’s ‘vibe’ under Kalen DeBoer may lead to frustration in 2024

What will happen within the Crimson Tide program if Kalen DeBoer seeks to institute too many changes compared to the old ways of Saban?

The 2024 season for the Alabama Crimson Tide will be watched closely by college football fans all across the nation, as legendary head coach Nick Saban decided to retire at the beginning of the offseason. He is replaced by former Washington Huskies head coach, Kalen DeBoer.

Saban had a very particular way of doing things which is what set him apart from most coaches and led to him winning seven total national championships.

Chip Patterson of CBS Sports recently broke down how a stark shift in “vibes” is already apparent.

“Kalen DeBoer has made it clear that he’s not Nick Saban, and the various changes to the program were well documented during the spring. From music at practice to media availability for assistant coaches after years of a “one-voice” philosophy having coordinators under a gag order for much of the season. Things seem a little more laid back, which can be a good thing, especially to better match DeBoer’s personality.”

Patterson believes Alabama fans may feel frustrated, as DeBoer may handle things a bit differently than Saban, especially after a loss.

“But when the new vibe results aren’t in line with those from the old vibe, there will be questions from Alabama fans about the proper methods to run the Crimson Tide program. I think Alabama will be contending for an SEC title in 2024, but the path to do so includes several more losable games than folks in Tuscaloosa are used to seeing. How will that vibe shift be treated when or if losses come, and how might those results paint the perception of Alabama’s first year of the post-Saban era?”

DeBoer has a proven track record of winning everywhere he’s been, but will that success come with him to Tuscaloosa? The field seems split on how to answer this question. We will have our answer as the Tide takes the field in just a couple of months.

Where does Alabama rank in the post-spring college football power rankings?

The College Football season is rapidly approaching. With spring in the books, see where Alabama ranks in the top-25 power rankings!

The 2024 season will be an interesting one for the Alabama Crimson Tide, as it will be the first time in nearly two decades that legendary head coach Nick Saban will not be roaming the sidelines of Bryant-Denny Stadium. Instead, it will be head coach Kalen DeBoer. That change, along with the SEC adding two new programs and the College Football Playoff expanding to 12 teams makes for this upcoming season to be one of mass change.

How will all of this impact the Crimson Tide’s ability to compete? Well, some pundits argue that it won’t knock them out of national title contention.

Patrick Conn and Tyler Nettuno of College Sports Wire‘s “College 12-pack” put together a post-spring practice top-25 power rankings. Alabama ranked No. 5 on the list.

“The Alabama Crimson Tide is going to have a West Coast flare in 2024 with four former Washington Huskies joining the team as they followed head coach Kalen DeBoer from Seattle. Jalen Milroe returns as the signal caller with plenty of talent around him. But how does this Tide squad look in the post-Nick Saban era?”

There are plenty of reasons to be excited for the 2024 Crimson Tide season, with “West Coast flare” being one of them. However, many fans are worried about DeBoer’s ability to maintain the high-level of success left behind by Saban. After all, in his last season before retiring, Saban led his team all the way to a conference championship title, the College Football Playoffs, and an overtime-loss in the Rose Bowl against the No. 1 team and the eventual national champion.

Alabama’s 2024 season-opening kickoff time vs. Western Kentucky revealed

The stage is set for the Kalen DeBoer era to start in Tuscaloosa with a kickoff time revealed for Alabama vs. Western Kentucky in Week 1.

A new era of Alabama Crimson Tide football will begin on Aug. 31, 2024 as the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers take on the Kalen DeBoer-led Tide in Bryant-Denny Stadium to kickoff the 2024 season.

With Nick Saban announcing his retirement at the conclusion of the 2023 season, fans are not sure how to feel about DeBoer, who was previously at the helm of the Washington Huskies program and made it all the way to the national championship game after defeating the Texas Longhorns in the Sugar Bowl.

Though the offseason has been filled with exciting Alabama football news regarding recruiting and the transfer portal, fans are still a bit uneasy about the change.

Aside from Alabama’s A-Day spring game, the Week 1 matchup against Western Kentucky will be the first time in nearly two decades, aside from the Iron Bowl in 2020, that a coach not named Nick Saban will be roaming the sidelines in Bryant-Denny.

As the season inches closer, kickoff times are being announced and there’s none more important than the one that tells us when the 2024 season begins for the Tide.

When does the 2024 Alabama Crimson Tide football season kickoff?

Alabama and Western Kentucky will meet in Bryant-Denny Stadium on Aug. 31, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. CT for the Week 1 matchup to get the season started.

The College Football Playoff Committee must answer this one question

The College Football Playoff Committee will release its initial rankings tonight. Alabama has a big question that can be answered by it.

Alabama’s path to the College Football Playoff has been an interesting one and it will continue to be as the final four weeks of the regular season approach. After Week 2’s loss to Texas, the Crimson Tide have been fighting an uphill battle.

With tonight’s College Football Playoff Committee rankings being revealed for the first time, we will all know where the Tide stands and how far of a climb the team has to make to be ranked as one of the top four teams in the nation.

Since the Longhorns earned the win in Tuscaloosa, the Longhorns have been the higher-ranked team in the AP Poll and the US LBM Coaches Poll. With Texas’s recent loss to Oklahoma, and then the Sooners’ loss to Kansas, these three teams form a one-loss triangle.

The question that arises is: where does Alabama rank when it comes to one-loss teams at this point in the season?

Oregon, which also has a single loss on the season, is expected to be the highest-ranked team of the bunch that has had their perfect seasons spoiled.

After the Ducks, there’s a bit of a jam with Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas.

You see, head-to-head matchups must be honored to a certain extent. However, as the season progresses and teams improve, or regress, then maybe other factors should be taken into consideration. The Week 2 version of the Longhorns defeated the Tide, but would the result be the same today?

That question is the cause for much debate. The human aspect of the College Football Playoff is what makes this whole process interesting. The Committee has made it clear that they want the “four best teams in college football” to participate and compete for the chance to earn a national title.

Well, by that standard, we are looking at teams as they stand in the present time; and when you do that, how much weight do you place on a game that happened nearly two months ago?

Texas did lose to Oklahoma and quarterback Quinn Ewers has been injured, but Steve Sarkisian’s team is still solid and deserving of a top-10 ranking.

Alabama, since Week 2, has notably improved on both sides of the ball, especially the offense. Tommy Rees has been stronger as an offensive play-caller, Jalen Milroe is visibly a lot more confident as a passer and the running game continues to develop.

The triangle features some interesting history. Texas beat Alabama in Week 2, then Oklahoma beat Texas in Week 6, and then Oklahoma lost to Kansas in Week 9 after struggling mightily against UCF in Week 8.

For the people who rely solely on head-to-head matchups, what do we make of this? By way of the transitive property, Oklahoma beat Texas, who beat Alabama, therefore the Sooners would be the strongest of the three teams? I don’t think so.

I believe the committee will rank the Longhorns above the Tide and the Sooners below both.

Even ESPN college football expert Heather Dinich states that Texas will likely be above Alabama in the initial rankings, but she adds “for now” at the end of the sentence.

With games against LSU, Kentucky and Auburn to round out the season, Nick Saban’s team has multiple opportunities to flash their strength and resiliency, and prove to the nation that this squad is not the same one that suffered a loss early this season.

LOOK: Twitter reacts to Alabama finally putting points on the board against Ole Miss

Alabama manages to get some points on the board and fans are still on edge.

Alabama is looking to avoid its first three-loss season since head coach Nick Saban’s first year as the head coach in 2007. Former Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin is not making it easy on Saban, as his Ole Miss Rebels held the Tide scoreless through the first quarter.

Fans have been frustrated with the play calls and execution on both sides of the ball early in the Week 11 SEC West contest. On offense, the plays have been predictable and routine passes without a defensive back in sight are dropped.

With a creative play call and a strong toss from Bryce Young, Jermaine Burton was able to reel in a 19-yard touchdown pass.

Twitter was quick to react.

PHOTOS: Relive Alabama’s 2021 win over Tennessee to keep the win streak alive

Remember when Alabama won consecutive game No. 15 over the Vols? Here are some of the best pictures from that matchup!

In 2021, Alabama defeated Tennessee in Bryant-Denny Stadium with a final score of 52-24 to extend the win streak to 15 consecutive games. The streak dates back to 2007, but some believe the Crimson Tide’s success over the Volunteers is doomed in the 2022 matchup.

Though this year’s contest is in Knoxville, it’s expected to be a battle between two top-10 programs. The 2021 contest’s box score may not seem like a close one, but it was only 24-17, Alabama after three quarters. The Crimson Tide ran away with the game in the fourth quarter.

Bryce Young threw for 371 yards and touchdowns, while also scoring twice on the ground in the win. Through a full four quarters, Alabama fans smoked their celebratory cigars.

Alabama Football announces future home-and-home series with Minnesota

Alabama replaces the 2032, 2033 Oklahoma Series with a home-and-home against Minnesota.

Alabama football has continued to schedule strong non-conference opponents for future schedules. Today, the program announced a home-and-home series with the Minnesota Golden Gophers for the 2032 and 2033 seasons.

“The first game will take place in Minneapolis, Minn., on Sept. 18, 2032, with the Golden Gophers coming to Tuscaloosa on Sept. 17, 2033,” the official press release reads. “It will mark only the second and third games between the two programs and the first contests during the regular season. Minnesota won the only game in the series, a 20-16 win over the Crimson Tide in the 2004 Music City Bowl.”

Minnesota serves as a replacement for the series with Oklahoma the Crimson Tide had scheduled. It needed to be replaced because the Sooners will soon be joining the Southeastern Conference.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football and news surrounding the Crimson Tide.
