Creighton and Georgetown met Feb. 3 in Omaha, Neb., with the Hoyas upsetting the Bluejays 86-79 as 14-point underdogs. The Hoyas shot 50% from the field in that game and have shot 50.4% over their last two after connecting on just 37.9% of their attempts from the floor over their previous five games.
Creighton responded to its Feb. 3 loss to Georgetown with a hard-fought 71-68 win at Marquette Saturday. The Bluejays led that game by double digits through much of the second half, but a late surge by the Golden Eagles made the final score a close one.
In last week’s win, Georgetown was able to force turnovers on 20.1% of Creighton’s possessions. For the season, the CU offense has recorded a turnover on just 15.8% of its possessions (27th NCAA-I). The Hoyas have forced opposing teams to turn the ball over on just 14.4% of possessions (342nd).

Marquette snapped a three-game losing skid in its last game, a 70-67 win over Butler Tuesday. The Golden Eagles overcame a sloppy, 19-turnover effort by shooting a robust 61.5% from the floor. Marquette had lost five of its previous six games at the Fiserv Forum.

Creighton lost to Marquette, 89-84, on Dec. 14. MU logged an effective field-goal mark of 64.3% in that game. Georgetown fired a 58.6% figure at CU Wednesday. Creighton is 9-2 over its last 11 games, and the Bluejay defense has been at the forefront of that surge. In the 11 games, CU has held foes to a 39.5% mark from the field. For the season, the ‘Jays have held opponents under 70 points in eight games; six of those were on home hardwood.
Georgetown came off a 21-day COVID-19-induced hiatus Saturday to defeat Providence 73-72 at home. The Hoyas had their previous four games postponed. GU went 15-for-19 from the free-throw line in the victory. The Hoyas are shooting a robust 78.4% from the lie since Dec. 11; overall, their rate of free throws per possession ranks as bottom-50 in the nation.
The Hoyas are looking for their first win in Omaha since 2015. Since then, the Bluejays are undefeated in five home games against Georgetown. Creighton won last year’s home game against GU 91-76. The ‘Jays hit a season-high 17 treys in that contest.

Creighton at Butler: Three things to know

Through the early going, Creighton sports the Big East’s best offense (83.3 points per game) and the circuit’s third-leading defense (68.9). The Bluejays’ offense was in high gear over its last two games (186 combined points), but those games were at home. Two of CU’s worst shooting performances of the winter have come in the teams last five games; both were o the road.
Butler’s 63.0 points-per-game scoring average ranks last in the Big East. And the Bulldogs haven’t logged a game above that average since Dec. 23. BU’s field-goal percentage on 2-point tries has dropped from 52.3% a year ago to 48.9% this season.
A year ago, Creighton was rolling offensively and toted an eight-game win streak into Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bluejays shot 38.9% and were soundly defeated by the Bulldogs in a 71-57 contest. Creighton heads to Indianapolis having lost three straight at Hinkle (0-3 ATS).

St. John’s lost at Xavier 69-61 as 6.5-point underdogs in the Red Storm’s first game since Dec. 20 because of COVID complications forcing the canceling or postponing of scheduled St. John’s games. The Johnnies are 1-5 ATS in their last six games
The Bluejays have won five straight including a 36-point whooping their last time out as 6-point home favorites vs. Seton Hall. However, Creighton covering against Seton Hall snapped a three-game ATS losing skid for the Bluejays.
Creighton (-7) took the first meeting between these two at St. John’s 94-76 on Dec. 17, which started its current win streak and was the last of a three-game losing streak for the Red Storm. The Bluejays lit it up vs. the Johnnies, shooting 56.7% from the field including 13-of-23 from three and outrebounding St. John’s 44-26.

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE. The St. John’s money line should be closer to +900 and despite liking the Johnnies plus the points, they’re a no-go straight up.

Against the spread (ATS)

St. John’s has been terrible since entering conference play and are just 1-4 ATS in Big East games. But, Creighton hasn’t been reliable vs. the number in this spot either: The Bluejays are 2-4 ATS in Big East games and 3-4 ATS as a home favorite this season. Also, aside from Villanova later this season this is the biggest game of the year for the St. John’s.

Finally, this is shaping up to be a Pros vs. Joes game in the betting market with 51% of the money on St. John’s while 78% of the bets are on Creighton, according to Pregame.com. Generally, the money column is considered the sharp side of the market so let’s follow the money and BET ST. JOHN’S +13.5 (-110) for a half-unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Your brain might tell you to hope for an Under if we are taking a double-digit ‘dog but St. John’s defense is terrible and Creighton is 31st in field-goal shooting and 42nd in 3-point shooting.

Creighton lost its Big East opener 89-84 to Marquette as an 8.5-point home favorite this past Monday. The contributing factors to Creighton’s loss were it being out-rebounded 40-25 and shooting an awful 14-for-25 from the free-throw line.
St. John’s also dropped its Big East opener in its previous game—a 97-94 overtime loss at Georgetown—as a 1-point underdog Dec. 13. The Red Storm struggled from deep, hitting only 4 of 13 3-pointers while the Hoyas sank 11 of 23 from behind the arc.
Under head coach Greg McDermott, Creighton has been nationally ranked a lot over the past decade. St. John’s has gotten the better of the Bluejays recently, as the Red Storm are 3-1 straight up and ATS in their last 4 games in the head-to-head series. All three wins were by at least 12 points.

Against my better judgment, I am going to LEAN ST. JOHN’S (+260) for a quarter-unit because of a personal philosophy to always sprinkle on the underdog’s money line when taking the points. Feel free to pass since the following betting markets are a little safer.

Against the spread (ATS)

GIMME the JOHNNIES +7 (-110). Athletically, St. John’s matches up real well vs. Creighton and the Bluejays have weaknesses the Red Storm can exploit.

St. John’s is a bad 3-point shooting team (233rd in 3-point percentage) but Creighton is even worse at defending the three, ranking 248th in opponent’s 3-point percentage. The Red Storm getting open looks in their home gym bodes well for St. John’s backers.

Also, Creighton is reluctant to attack the basket, which is why it’s ranked 232nd in free-throw rate. They’re also 192nd in free-throw percentage. If Creighton is knocking down threes, this won’t come down to free throws; however, BetMGM is projecting it as a two-possession game, so free-throw shooting may come into play.

Over/Under (O/U)

St. John’s plays a very volatile style of basketball; the Red Storm pressure the ball heavily (32nd in opponent’s turnover percentage) and crash the boards (47th in offensive rebounds per game). This leads to crazy swings in momentum.

There’ll be a stretch where St. John’s forces turnovers that lead to easy buckets or gets fouled on putbacks but then will have lapses in defense, or take unnecessary gambles, leaving 3-point shooters wide open.

Creighton G Marcus Zegarowski was tabbed as the Big East Preseason Player of the Year. Zegarowski connected on 42.4% of his threes en route to averaging 16.1 points per game in 2019-20. He’s clocked 38 points, nine assists, and five steals over Creighton’s last two games (loss to Kansas, win over Nebraska).
Marquette will be looking to bounce back after a loss at UCLA on Friday night. The Golden Eagles were just 4-of-20 (20%) from 3-point range in being held to a season-low in points in the 69-60 setback. A year ago, Creighton and Marquette were one-two in Big East 3-point accuracy (38.6%, 38.2%, respectively).
