Broncos QB Bo Nix making a real case of Offensive Rookie of the Year

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is building a strong case to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award this fall.

After a slow start to his pro career, Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix has been red-hot in recent weeks.

Nix posted a record-breaking performance in a 38-6 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, completing 28-of-33 passes for 307 yards with four touchdowns and no turnovers.

“I thought he played well,” coach Sean Payton said after Sunday’s win. “You feel like you’re in good hands. He’s smart with the football. He makes plays with his feet. A lot of times you’re calling plays for certain looks [and] the looks aren’t there. He has that ability to create and all the while protect the football. I thought he played really well.”

Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles also gushed with praise for Nix.

“I think he’s incredible,” Bolles said. “Bo is my dog, and he leads his team. He leads this offense. We go as far as his play. Us five up front just needed to handle business and that’s what we did. What makes him so special is when he has time to throw the ball, he gets the ball to our playmakers. He’s a deadly quarterback in this league.”

Nix is now gaining steam as a legitimate Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate, joining Jayden Daniels in the conversation.

“He’s been on fire all year,” receiver Troy Franklin said. “He’s been doing really well, especially his confidence and the way he carries himself in the locker room. We really didn’t feel like we had a rookie. He just feels like an experienced veteran, and he’s been on the field every play.

“With his elusiveness and being able to extend plays, he doesn’t quit on any plays. He’s Bo Nix. He wants to make the most of every play so it’s a lot of fun playing with him.”

Nix has scored 19 total touchdowns this season (14 passing, four rushing and one receiving). The next-closest among rookies is Daniels (14).

“The dude should be in conversations for Rookie of the Year,” veteran receiver Courtland Sutton said. “There should be no hesitation. He shows up week-in and week-out, he’s only been able to progress each weekend. That’s all you can ask for. For a young guy to continue to progress, continue to meet the challenges that are faced in front of them, and that is what he continues to do.

“It’s a lot of fun to be a part of. A lot of fun to watch him go out there and just have fun. You can tell he’s like a kid, he is just enjoying himself. For your quarterback to be out there enjoying himself and not panic, there’s not one ounce of panic that goes upon him, no matter what part of the game we’re in. It’s a lot of fun.”

Oddsmakers have also noticed Nix’s ascension. Before the season started, BetMGM had Nix listed with +1700 odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. He’s now all the way down to +400, only trailing Daniels (-600).

“I haven’t seen a quarterback, a rookie quarterback, like him, in a long time,” running back Javonte Williams said. “And just the way he keeps composure, the way he treats people, and just the way he plays on the field. I mean, he’s the full package.”

Broncos star cornerback Pat Surtain took it a step further by suggesting Nix is in the conversation for NFL MVP this fall.

It’s probably too early to talk NFL MVP, but Nix has certainly put himself in the mix to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Nix will look to build on his 2,572 yards and 19 touchdowns when Denver goes on the road to face the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12.

Courtland Sutton delivers funny message to ex-teammate Justin Simmons

“Hey, bro, if you see me coming across the middle, just remember we’re friends,” Broncos WR Courtland Sutton told Falcons DB Justin Simmons.

After being cut by the Denver Broncos this offseason, veteran safety Justin Simmons landed with the Atlanta Falcons.

Simmons is now set to return to Empower Field at Mile High to face his old team when the Broncos host the Falcons on Sunday.

Denver wide receiver Courtland Sutton was asked about Simmons’ return during his media availability on Wednesday. After a serious response to the question, Sutton revealed a funny message he delivered to his ex-teammate ahead of the matchup.

“It will be fun,” Sutton said when asked about playing against Simmons. “Justin’s my guy, man. I’m obviously sad that we don’t get to share a locker room together anymore, but I’m happy that he found another home — happy that the Falcons knew the value that they were getting with signing him.

“Watching him on film, he’s still Justin Simmons. He’s the guy that goes out there and makes plays. … He’s such a smart player, such a reliable player. Really good tackler. Really good player at finding the ball, man. It’s going to be fun getting to go against him.”

Then came the money quote: “You know, practicing against him for years is one thing, but to get live bullets is going to be fun,” Sutton said. “I jokingly told him, ‘Hey, bro, if you see me coming across the middle, just remember we’re friends.'”

Simmons (30) and Sutton (29) were teammates with the Broncos from 2018-2023. After facing off in practice every day for six seasons, the safety and receiver are now set to face off as opponents for the first time on Sunday.

Chiefs block last-second field goal to beat Broncos 16-14

A heartbreaking loss for the Broncos, who had a last-second field goal attempt blocked in a 16-14 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs (9-0) hung on to defeat the Denver Broncos (5-5) 16-14 on Sunday afternoon after blocking a last-second field goal attempt on the final play of the game.

After the Broncos and Chiefs exchanged punts on their first two drives, quarterback Bo Nix led a nine-play, 80-yard drive that ended with his six-yard touchdown pass to Devaughn Vele to take a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. Kansas City answered that score with a 36-yard Harrison Butker field goal to make it 7-3.

Nix then went 70 yards on five plays and connected with Courtland Sutton on a 32-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 14-3.

Following a questionable illegal contact penalty called against safety Brandon Jones that kept a Chiefs drive alive, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes later threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce to make it 14-10. Broncos kicker Wil Lutz later attempted a 60-yard field goal that fell just short going into halftime.

In the third quarter, Butker converted a 28-yard field goal to cut KC’s deficit to 14-13. Butker later kicked a 20-yarder to take a 16-14 lead in the fourth quarter.

Denver then got the ball back and went 43 yards on 13 plays to set up a 35-yard field goal attempt that could have won the game. Chiefs linebacker Leo Chenal blocked the kick, securing a KC win.

Up next for the Broncos is a home game against the Atlanta Falcons at Empower Field at Mile High in Week 11.

Courtland Sutton continues to climb Broncos’ all-time receiving list

Broncos WR Courtland Sutton now ranks 10th in franchise history with 334 career receptions.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton totaled seven receptions for 122 yards against the Baltimore Ravens last week, marking his second-straight game with at least 100 receiving yards.

With that performance, Sutton became the first Broncos receiver since Tim Patrick (2020) to post 100 yards in consecutive games. Sutton now has 334 career receptions, which ranks 10th on the team’s all-time list. He passed Brandon Marshall (327) on Sunday.

Player Receptions Yards Touchdowns
1. Rod Smith 849 11,389 68
2. Shannon Sharpe 675 8.439 55
3. Demaryius Thomas 665 9.055 60
4. Lionel Taylor 543 6,872 44
5. Ed McCaffrey 462 6,200 46
6. Vance Johnson 415 5,695 37
7. Emmanuel Sanders 404 5,361 28
8. Riley Odoms 396 5,755 41
9. Steve Watson 353 6,112 36
10. Courtland Sutton 334 4,758 26

Sutton is the fifth player in franchise history to total at least 30 receptions in six of his first seven seasons, joining the late Demaryius Thomas, Vance Johnson, Riley Odoms and Lionel Taylor.

Sutton also threw a two-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Bo Nix on Sunday, becoming the third receiver in franchise history to throw for a score, joining Sanders (once) and Arthur Marshall (twice).

With the rest of this season and another year remaining on his contract, Sutton is poised to continue climbing Denver’s all-time receiving lists.

Bo Nix says Broncos WR Courtland Sutton is ‘holding up his end’

“He’s holding up his end and I respect that out of him,” Broncos QB Bo Nix said of WR Courtland Sutton.

The Denver Broncos have gotten little production from any of their wide receivers not named Courtland Sutton this season.

Sutton, 29, has been quarterback Bo Nix’s favorite target, hauling in 36 receptions for 499 yards and two touchdowns through nine games.

“[Sutton] is just competing at a high level,” Nix said after the team’s loss in Baltimore. “He’s taking ownership in that room. He’s really taking pride and value, and he’s playing with a lot of passion right now. He believes he owes that to himself.

“He works really hard throughout the week to go out there and perform. He’s working really hard at it, and I can see that each and every week, so I’m happy for him. As the leader that he is – the captain – he’s holding up his end and I respect that out of him.”

Sutton is on pace for a 68-catch, 953-yard, four-touchdown season in 2024. Those totals would rank second, second and third among his all-time best seasons. Now in his seventh season, Sutton remains Mr. Reliable for the Broncos.

More trades could be on the way for Broncos

Zach Wilson? Greg Dulcich? Courtland Sutton??? ESPN suggests the Broncos might not be done making trades.

The Denver Broncos took action ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline by agreeing to trade pass rusher Baron Browning to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a sixth-round draft pick.

That was the team’s first move, but it might not be the last.

Following the news of the Browning trade, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler took to Twitter/X and re-shared his trade deadline story from last week that outlined potential moves for the Broncos, who Fowler says “might not be done” after the Browning trade.

Last week, Fowler noted the possibility of a Browning trade (which has since happened) and he also mentioned quarterback Zach Wilson and tight end Greg Dulcich as potential trade candidates. Fowler also pointed out that teams have called out wide receiver Courtland Sutton in past years.

Additionally, Fowler wrote that “it wouldn’t be a shock” to see the Broncos attempt to trade for a pass-catching running back ahead of the deadline.

Stay tuned as the trade deadline is now just one day away. We will track any potential moves Denver makes on Broncos Wire.

5 takeaways from the Broncos’ loss to Ravens in Week 9

The Broncos lost to the Ravens on the road in Week 9. Here are five takeaways from the defeat.

The Denver Broncos (5-4) lost to the Baltimore Ravens (6-3) 41-10 in Week 9 of the 2024 NFL season on Sunday afternoon. Here are five quick takeaways from the defeat.

1. P.J. Locke has been missed: Locke has missed the team’s last two games with a thumb injury and there’s been a noticeable dropoff to Devon Key. Locke himself could be a candidate to lose his starting job in 2025, but he’s certainly better than the depth options behind him. The Broncos will undoubtedly hope the safety is ready to return next week.

2. Courtland Sutton can’t do it all at WR: Sutton hauled in seven receptions for 122 yards on Sunday. No other wide receiver posted more than two catches and quarterback Bo Nix was Denver’s only player to catch a touchdwon pass on Sunday. The Broncos lack playmakers at the position and the WRs behind Sutton (ahem, Lil’Jordah Humphrey) are hurting more than they’re helping. Josh Reynolds (finger) is eligible to return from injured reserve next week and the offense could really use him.

3. Bo Nix is still trending up: It certainly wasn’t a great game from Nix, but the blame for his interception falls on Humphrey. Nix finished the day 19-of-33 passing for 223 yards with one turnover and one touchdown catch. He’s getting little help on offense, but the rookie QB continues to show fight. Nix still has some rookie growing pains to get through, but he has the right makeup to have success in the NFL.

4. The Broncos aren’t true playoff contenders yet: Denver’s 5-3 record going into Week 9 might have been a bit of fool’s gold. Mathematically, the Broncos could obviously still squeak into the playoffs this season as a Wild Card seed, but Sunday’s game demonstrated where Denver stacks up against true contenders in the AFC. The Broncos have a young, inexperienced team that’s lacking in depth due in part to the team’s limited salary cap space. All things considered, a 5-4 record is a respectable mark at this point in the season. But Denver’s more pretender than contender at the moment.

5. Expect a quiet NFL trade deadline: It wouldn’t make sense for the Broncos to trade away future draft capital with a splash move at the deadline. Denver’s not one player away from making a run, anyway. It also wouldn’t make sense to part with a player like Sutton — their best WR — when Nix is developing. The Broncos might stand pat at Tuesday’s trade deadline.

Up next for Denver is a road game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Broncos QB Bo Nix made history with his touchdown catch

Bo Nix is one of three rookie QBs in NFL history to throw, catch and run for a TD. He’s Denver’s first QB to catch a TD since John Elway.

Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix is making a lot of franchise history in 2024, and on Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, he made a little more.

After catching a two-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Courtland Sutton, Nix became only the second Broncos quarterback to have a receiving touchdown since 1986, when Hall of Famer John Elway caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from running back Steve Sewell.

Nix continues to show the abilities that made him the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft. He became the first player in 2024 to have a passing, receiving and rushing touchdown.

According to NextGen Stats, Nix only had 0.7 yards of separation and a 21.9% completion probability on the touchdown catch, making it the most improbable reception by a QB since 2018.

As for his passing stats, Nix fished the game 19-of-33 for 223 yards, giving him 1,753 passing yards on the season. Nix has now passed Mickey Slaughter for the most passing yards by a rookie QB in franchise history.

Nix is the third quarterback in NFL history to throw a touchdown pass, catch a touchdown pass and rush for a touchdown in his rookie season, joining Marcus Mariota (2015) and Kordell Stewart (1995). Nix now has 13 total touchdowns this season.
