Looking back at the Nebraska career of Adrian Martinez

Martinez had a 15-29 record as Nebraska’s starting quarterback!!

Last week we discussed the recent comments by former Nebraska Cornhusker quarterback Adrian Martinez. He talked about transferring from Nebraska during the off-season due to his desire to play and win a bowl game. Martinez also spoke about his desire to play better by being a more accurate passer and not turning the ball over so much.

The California native was a fixture on the Husker sideline for the last four seasons. During that time, success was limited, as Martinez went 15-29 as a starter and failed to reach a bowl game each of the last four years. As the main player in Head Coach Scott Frost’s offense, Martinez threw for 8,491 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions. He also rushed for another 2,301 yards with 35 touchdowns. During the off-season, he announced his intention to transfer to Kansas State.

On3 asks “Which Quarterbacks will throw for 3,000+ yards in 2022?”

Which quarterbacks will be airing it out the most this season?

The passing game in college football is as prevalent as ever. In fact, at least one quarterback has eclipsed the 5,000-yard mark 13 times since 2002. Between 1937 and 2001 that same mark was broken only one time. With breaking 4,000 and even 5,000-yard seasons becoming more coming every year, the act of breaking 3,000 yards has become an ordinary achievement. Nebraska though has had difficulty with the passing game over the years as the routine mark for 3,000+ yards has only occurred four times in all of school history. Joe Ganz holds the school record when he threw for 3,568 yards in 2008.

How many quarterbacks in all of college football will throw for 3,000 yards in 2022? A new list from on3 takes a detailed looked at every quarterback they think will break that mark this upcoming year. Scroll below to see each name broken down by conference as well as their stats from 2021.

List names most improved teams for this season

Which teams are expected to make the biggest improvements from last season?!

A new list from 247Sports has the Nebraska Cornhuskers named as one of the teams expected to make the most significant leap from last season to this year. After a 3-9 season in 2021 and a successful off-season adding talent via the transfer portal, the Huskers are viewed as a team to improve in 2022.

Josh Pate from 247Sports says about Nebraska this season,

The first one is Nebraska. So I think that even though you look at the returning production numbers out there, and they’re not sky high, I think it’s misleading with Nebraska, because I think they did fairly significantly upgrade the roster, especially at quarterback with Casey Thompson. And remember Casey Thompson, who was the former Texas quarterback… so you’ve got that going for Nebraska. They had three wins last year. They’re over-under win total is 7.5 this year. So at the very least, I expect improvement from them.”

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again improvement has been predicted for Nebraska every season since Scott Frost arrived. Four years in and no bowl games and 15 total wins, there better be an improvement. To his credit, Frost made changes to the team in the offseason. The addition of offensive coordinator Mark Whipple, coupled with Frost giving up play call responsibilities and bringing in recruiting ace Mickey Joseph with a willingness to embrace the transfer portal, show significant changes for the Huskers heading in 2022.

This team will look different from any other team that Scott Frost has had during his tenure in Lincoln. Whether a new-look team will mean a team that plays differently from the past four years is another story. We’ll start to find out the truth on August 27th in Dublin against the Northwestern Wildcats.

4-star offensive tackle out of Louisiana to visit Lincoln this weekend

Another busy weekend shaping up for the Huskers!!

A consensus class of 2023 4-star offensive tackle out of Louisiana will make an official visit to Lincoln this weekend. Zalance Heard plays for Neville High School out of Monroe, Louisiana will be spending time with the Nebraska Cornhusker coaching staff. The 6’6″ 300-pound lineman is listed as the #6 prospect to come out of Louisiana by 247sports, while on3.com has listed Heard as the #5 prospect out of Bayou State.

Regardless, it’s clear that the tackle is highly thought of, not just by the Cornhuskers. Heard has received offers from Michigan, Florida State, Baylor, and LSU. He’s currently being recruited by Husker offensive line coach Bryan Applewhite and wide receiver coach Mickey Joseph, and it’s no surprise to see Joseph involved considering the deep connections he still has to that area. Another interesting note is that a former member of Neville High School is already on the Nebraska roster in the form of freshman running back Ajay Allen. Heard initially played on the defensive line but switched to the offensive line his junior year.

Former Husker coach’s son to officially visit this weekend

The Cornhuskers will have a familiar name making an official visit this weekend.

A class of 2023 recruit will be visiting the Nebraska Football team this weekend even though his father no longer works on the sideline. Edge rusher Teitum Tuioti, son of former Husker defensive line coach Tony Tuioti, will officially visit Nebraska this weekend.

The 3-star pass rusher had played for Lincoln Southeast High School while his father worked for the Cornhuskers, but he now plays for Sheldon High out of Eugene, Oregon. His father, Tony Tuioti, coached at Nebraska for three seasons before accepting the same position at Oregon under first-year head coach Dan Lanning. Tony successfully recruited former Husker lineman Casey Rogers during the off-season after leaving for Oregon.

According to Rivals, Teitum Tuioti has received 11 total offers, but their Future Cast prediction shows a tie between the Ducks and the Cornhuskers. He’s currently listed as the third-best player in the 2023 recruiting class out of Oregon, according to both on3 and 247sports. This weekend will be Tuioti’s first official college visit.

Top transfer portal player sets commitment date

The Huskers are still in the running for the top pass rusher in the Transfer Portal and he’s announced when he’ll make his commitment.

One of the top players remaining in the transfer portal has announced the date he will make his commitment on where he will play this season. Ochaun Mathis has announced that he will make his official decision between the Texas Longhorns and the Nebraska Cornhuskers on April 30th. Nebraska hosted the former Horned Frog when he came to the spring game on April 9th where both Scott Frost and Athletic Director Trev Alberts spent significant time with the Texas native. Mathis would fill a vital need on the defensive line, especially with the announcement that Casey Rogers has entered the transfer portal. The defensive line as a unit is now very thin and could use a boost in terms of depth and talent. Last year Mathis had 45 tackles, was tied for the team lead with 4.0 sacks, and placed second with 7.0 tackles for loss. He was also a 2021 selection second-team All-Big 12. The defensive end chose TCU from high school over Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech.
