Derek Carr, Juwan Johnson competing in a national cornhole tournament

Derek Carr and Juwan Johnson are back in competition, but not on the field. They’re in the American Cornhole League’s Superhole tournament:

The American Cornhole League is hosting their fifth annual Superhole event, with the qualifying round of the tournament taking place in New Orleans. Not only is it in the city, Saints starters Derek Carr and Juwan Johnson are participating as well. The incentive for victory starts with a $100,000 cash prize for winning it all.

Johnson and Carr aren’t partners, however. Each will be paired with an ACL pro and will compete against other NFL players. Johnson, paired with Frank Modlin, looks to take down Eric Kendricks. Meanwhile Carr, paired with Trevor Kuhfuss, looks to defeat former Saints first-round draft pick Brandin Cooks. The Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots also have players in the New Orleans qualifying round.

Going through withdrawals from seeing your Saints compete? This is the kind of event that could slightly scratch the itch leading up to the NFL draft. Seeing that it’s in New Orleans you could also call it a home game of sorts. Carr and Johnson’s Superhole qualifying round airs live Saturday, April 20 at 9 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

Dawn Staley took her talents to the American Cornhole League and she was so awesome

What can’t Dawn Staley do?

Dawn Staley is as decorated as they come when talking about American sports icons. She’s widely regarded as one of the best college basketball coaches in the world, an Olympic gold medal winner as both a player and coach and also a Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee.

In short, Staley is uber talented.

And as we see her star in OOFOS commercials, we’re well aware that her stardom and talent go beyond the hardwood. Truly, there’s nothing Staley can’t succeed in.

So, should anyone be surprised that the basketball legend is also good at cornhole?

Yep, cornhole.

Watch her sink this shot during the SuperHole 3 event of the American Cornhole League World Championships.

Staley partnered with Mike Richards in the celebrity-incorporated event. Although the two ultimately lost in the final to Doug Flutie and Matt Guy, it was a fun and entertaining battle at the ACL World Championships.

Will Staley be back next time around to win it all?

Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones to face off again… in a cornhole competition

The American Cornhole league announced that Darnold and Jones will go head to head in, you guessed it, cornhole.

Sam Darnold and the Jets already beat their neighbors during the 2019 season, but the quarterback will give his Big Blue counterpart a shot at redemption prior to the Super Bowl.

The American Cornhole League announced that Darnold and Daniel Jones will go head to head in a special ESPN broadcast playing — you guessed it — cornhole. The face-off will take place at the Broward Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from 9-10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31. The even is free and open to the public.

The contest anticipates over 2,000 fans on-site. For those seeking a premium experience, VIP seats will be available to purchase for $25.

“While I wish I was going to be on the field this weekend, this is a nice consolation prize – and another opportunity to take home a win for Gang Green against a crosstown rival,” Darnold said. “Daniel’s a great competitor, but I’ve been practicing and feel good about my odds.”

The matchup is just the tip of the iceberg for a three-day ACL event. The Darnold and Jones competition, however, will air on ESPN2 as a one-hour special on Sunday, Feb. 2. The first broadcast airs prior to Super Bowl kickoff.

“This is an opportunity for us to showcase just how far the game has come, with two of the most exciting young QBs in the nation teaming up with some of the top cornhole pros in the country,” said Stacey Moore, Commissioner and Founder of the American Cornhole League. “It’s really a treat for the fans and the perfect way to whet their appetite ahead of the big game on Sunday.”

Houston Texans OG Greg Mancz and rookie DE Charles Omenihu played cornhole and basketball with shoppers at a local Academy Sports + Outdoors.

One of the great things about the platform of pro football is it provides a high degree of visibility to share the platform with fans.

That is what Houston Texans offensive guard Greg Mancz and defensive end Charles Omenihu did during the holidays as they teamed up with Academy Sports + Outdoors to surprise fans with game night at a Houston area store.

Mancz and Omenihu shot baskets and also played cornhole. Mancz said the game was not called “bags” and stated it was called “cornhole,” and invented on the west side of Cincinnati, according to Wikipedia.

The Texans enjoyed a little holiday fun as they gear up to finish off their regular season slate with a rematch with the Tennessee Titans Sunday at 3:25 p.m. at NRG Stadium.
