Gators hire LSU’s Corey Raymond as defensive co-coordinator

The strength of Raymond’s resumé is his firepower on the recruiting trail.

Billy Napier has wasted no time putting a new infrastructure in place after being hired to lead Florida’s football program. A few of his assistants from Louisiana have already found homes with the Gators, but the majority of positions seem destined to be filled by individuals poached from other places. The first of those hires was reported by On3 Sports on Wednesday evening, as Napier has reportedly hired LSU’s defensive backs coach Corey Raymond as defensive co-coordinator.

Raymond’s staying power over the course of his career with the Tigers has been impressive. He’s spent ten seasons in Death Valley, establishing himself as one of the best cornerbacks coaches in the country. He’ll maintain that responsibility with the Gators. Leadership of the defense as a whole will be shared between Raymond and safeties coach Patrick Toney, who was a defensive assistant on Napier’s Ragin’ Cajuns staff.

The strength of Raymond’s resumé is his firepower on the recruiting trail. He’s reeled in number of notable players, being credited by 247Sports as the primary or secondary recruiter on a whopping eight five-star prospects. Notably, one of those players, cornerback Eli Ricks, entered the transfer portal and has yet to decide on a destination.

Regardless of whether Florida is serious a contender for Ricks, Raymond’s presence on the Gators’ staff will be a valuable one. The team needs to recover from a series of rapid decommitments and outgoing transfers following Dan Mullen’s dismissal and there aren’t any obvious candidates to flip among Napier’s Louisiana recruits.

As one would imagine, Jules Montinar will not be retained by the team after serving as the cornerbacks coach in 2021. Montinar was a part of Florida’s coaching staff for just one season. While Florida’s cornerbacks performed badly all season long, Montinar will likely land on his feet. He has the very legitimate excuse that he was stuck in Todd Grantham’s scheme and has a pedigree working with both Nick Saban and Kirby Smart.

Brian Kelly’s LSU contract is reportedly $15 million per season

Not quite the $250 million…but at least he is keeping two key assistants. More to come.

The quote from Brian Kelly we heard was it would take $250 million to get him out of South Bend, Indiana. Well, it appears that Mrs. Kelly is perfectly fine with a little less than that.

The number being reported by Matt Fortuna and Brody Miller of The Athletic is 10 years and north of $100 million with incentives. At roughly a deal of $15 million per year gives him more than what Ed Orgeron made in 2021. Or any other coach for that matter.

With the contract talks out of the way, for the moment they can focus on other aspects.

The big moves that need to happen next involve the assistants. An early report from On3 states that running backs coach Kevin Faulk and defensive backs coach Corey Raymond will be retained on staff. The coordinators are just as important, if not more, but that is a good start. Both are excellent recruiters and key members of the staff.

At this point, Marcus Freeman might be a pipedream as many current players and recruits will likely push to keep him in South Bend. That will be the next topic to tackle in the coming days.

Top three replacement options for LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini

The LSU Tigers are on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator after parting ways with Bo Pelini.

One year after winning the national championship with a 15-0 record, the LSU Tigers finished the 2020 season with a disappointing 5-5 record.

Those results led LSU head coach Ed Orgeron to make sweeping changes on his coaching staff, including at defensive coordinator.

Last offseason, Orgeron went for Bo Pelini, who had spent the previous 12 seasons as head coach for Nebraska and Youngstown State after Dave Aranda left Baton Rouge to take over as head coach at Baylor.

Before becoming the head coach at Nebraska in 2008, Pelini had spent three seasons as defensive coordinator at LSU.

Things didn’t quite go so well in his return.

The Tigers set numerous school records for defensive futility in Pelini’s long year in charge of the defense, and rumors of his tenuous job security began back in October.

Sure, many things played a part in LSU’s struggles this season. A lack of offseason for a new coach to install his defense played a part, as well as the Tigers losing several talented defenders to the NFL and opt-outs.

Regardless, it was apparent that Pelini wasn’t going to turn things around, and Orgeron is now searching for a new defensive coordinator for the second straight season.

Where does Orgeron turn to now?

Does he look for the next up-and-comer, or does he look for a veteran with a proven track record?

Here are the top three options Orgeron should consider for his new defensive coordinator.
