If Orgeron decided to promote from within, he has the perfect candidate in secondary coach Corey Raymond.

A former standout cornerback at LSU from 1987-91, Raymond spent six seasons in the NFL.

He would get into coaching in 2003 at the high school level. In 2006, he would return to Baton Rouge as a coaching intern before spending the next two seasons as an assistant to the strength and conditioning staff.

His first full-time coaching job came at Utah State in 2009, where he spent two seasons as defensive backs coach. He would then spend the 2011 season at Nebraska in the same position before returning to LSU in 2012.

During his nine seasons back with the Tigers, Raymond has served as defensive backs coach, assistant head coach, cornerbacks coach, and recruiting coordinator.

Raymond’s track record is outstanding. He consistently recruits and develops defensive backs into high NFL draft choices. He has recruited elite cornerbacks Derek Stingley Jr. and Eli Ricks to Baton Rouge in the past two years.

And, he has the support of some prominent former Tigers.

For Orgeron, there is no shortage of quality options for LSU’s next defensive coordinator.

Freeman, Mason, or Raymond should be at the top of Orgeron’s list.
