Bears waive six players ahead of Saturday’s roster deadline

Chicago released six players on Thursday morning to trim the roster to 74 ahead of the Sept. 5 53-man roster deadline.

With less than two weeks until the Chicago Bears open the regular season against the Detroit Lions, there are some roster cuts that need to be made. The Bears need to trim the roster from 80 to 53 players by Sept. 5, and they’ve already started making roster moves.

Chicago released six players on Thursday morning to trim the roster to 74. They waived running back Napoleon Maxwell, receivers Alex Wesley and Ahmad Wagner, offensive lineman Corey Levin, defensive lineman Lee Autry and linebacker Keandre Jones.

There’s a good chance some of these players could wind up on Chicago’s practice squad, which will have 16 available spots should they clear waivers. The Bears still need to cut 21 players by Saturday’s deadline.

Bears 2020 training camp preview: Offensive line

The Bears return four of five starters on their offensive line heading into 2020. Let’s take a look at the unit heading into training camp.

The Chicago Bears will report to training camp on July 28 and one unit to keep an eye on is the offensive lineman. This offseason the Bears didn’t heavily invest into their offensive line that was ranked 29th in run blocking and 21st in pass protection.

The Bears also saw their long time offensive guard Kyle Long retire this offseason and looked into bottom tier free agents and late 2020 draft picks do fill some void and bring competition.

Let’s take a look at the offensive line heading into training camp.

Cody Whitehair

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

After switching from center to left guard before the start of the 2019 season, Whitehair saw himself playing center in the second half of the season. Entering his fifth year, Whitehair is confident that he’ll be playing center for the 2020 season, where he feels comfortable.

In 2018 Whitehair was very comfortable in playing center as he earned his only Pro Bowl selection so far through his career.

Broncos added a cornerback, lost an offensive lineman last week

The Broncos signed cornerback Shakial Taylor to their 53-man roster last week.

Some fans in Denver might not have noticed that the Broncos made two roster moves over Thanksgiving weekend.

Denver claimed cornerback Shakial Taylor off waivers after he was cut by the Colts. To make room for Taylor on the active roster, the Broncos placed cornerback Cyrus Jones on the reserve/non-football injury list.

Jones has an illness that will apparently keep him out for a while.

Taylor (5-11, 175 pounds) entered the league as a college free agent out of Kansas with Indianapolis in May. He spent part of the year on the Colts’ practice squad and dressed for five games, totaling seven tackles.

In addition to adding a cornerback last week, Denver also lost a reserve offensive lineman. Corey Levin left the Broncos’ practice squad to sign with the Bears, joining Chicago’s 53-man roster. NFL rules allow practice squad players to sign with another team’s active roster.

Denver filled Levin’s former spot on the practice squad by bringing back rookie quarterback Brett Rypien, who was cut last week to make room for Drew Lock, who was activated from injured reserve.

Broncos sign QB Brett Rypien to practice squad

The Broncos have re-signed rookie quarterback Brett Rypien to their 10-man practice squad.

The Denver Broncos have signed rookie quarterback Brett Rypien to their 10-man practice squad, the team announced Monday. Rypien was cut last week to make room for Drew Lock on the 53-man roster.

Lock was activated from injured reserve and started against the Los Angeles Chargers, leading the team to a 23-20 win in Week 13.

Rypien cleared waivers over the weekend and now returns to Denver. Rypien played college football at Boise State and signed with the Broncos in May after going undrafted in April. He failed to make Denver’s 53-man roster in September but was added to the practice squad.

Rypien spent the first eight weeks of the season on the practice squad before being promoted to serve as Brandon Allen’s backup in Week 9. Rypien served as Allen’s backup for three games before Lock took over. Allen will now serve as the team’s No. 2 quarterback.

The Broncos had an open spot for Rypien on the practice squad after offensive lineman Corey Levin left the team to sign with the Chicago Bears. Because he was only on the practice squad, Levin was eligible to join Chicago’s active roster.

Bears place DB Sherrick McManis, TE Adam Shaheen on Injured Reserve

The Bears placed DB Sherrick McManis, TE Adam Shaheen on injured reserve and signed OL Corey Levin and TE Eric Saubert to the active roster.

The Chicago Bears placed defensive back and special teams standout Sherrick McManis and tight end Adam Shaheen on injured reserve on Saturday.

The Bears signed offensive lineman Corey Levin and tight end Eric Saubert to the active roster in their place.

McManis suffered a groin injury against the New York Giants, which caused him to miss Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions. Shaheen has missed the last two games with a foot injury, after being a healthy scratch against the Lions in Week 10.

Chicago is thin at the tight end position with Trey Burton and now Shaheen on injured reserve. They currently have Jesper Horsted, JP Holtz and Bradley Sowell, and now Saubert at tight end.

The Bears signed Saubert, a fifth-round draft pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 2017, off Oakland’s practice squad. Saubert appeared in all 14 games, as a reserve, for the Falcons as a rookie and played in 16 games, with one start, and caught five passes for 48 yards, in 2018.

Chicago signed guard/center Levin off the Broncos’ practice squad. Levin was drafted in the sixth round of the 2018 draft out of Chattanooga, where he appeared in 16 games for the Tennessee Titans as a rookie. After being waived by Tennessee, he was claimed by the Broncos.
