Head coach Ed Orgeron understands the team needs to run the ball

The LSU Tigers need to shake things up in the run game, it starts upfront in the trenches.

LSU Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron met with the media on Monday for his weekly press conference. Among the topics on the day, Coach O addressed both the offensive line play and the running back. Both have underperformed to the LSU standard. Currently, the Tigers run game is ranked last in the SEC at 2.86 yards per attempt.

He has been adamant in recent weeks about a return to the 2019 offense that set records week in and week out. When asked about how close they are to getting to that level, Orgeron stated they aren’t close. The 2019 offense utilized five-man protection, meaning that five skill players were running routes.

This season due to injuries and subpar play in the trenches, the team is having to keep a back or tight end in to help in pass blocking. This allows a defense to only focus on a three-man route.

Due to the struggles, the offense is keeping more players at the line of scrimmage and using quick throws to get the ball out. Orgeron knows that his quarterback is taking far too many shots inside the pocket. When asked on how they fix protections and the running game, he said it starts with the offensive line.

To help the line, they need to get healthy. Starting left tackle Cam Wire hasn’t played since the opener against UCLA. His ankle injury still bothering him, Wire was unable to go after pre-game work against Mississippi State. Not everything can be tied to the offensive line. At some point, these running backs need to make a guy miss. We have seen that to some extent.

Corey Kiner has been the best back of the group with rushes of 10+ yards and forcing missed tackles. Orgeron has continued to stick with Tyrion Davis-Price as the starter but at some point, you have to shake things up or we might be living in the definition of insanity.

If the offense wants to run the football, it might be time to try a new approach since you can’t necessarily change the offensive line in terms of who is playing. They are playing the best guys they have, it just might not be enough against these defensive units who are stout against the run.

LSU vs Mississippi State: Running Backs Tale of the Tape

Previewing the running backs in the LSU-Mississippi State matchup.

When it comes to running the football, these two teams are really struggling in that area. The bright spot for the LSU Tigers is freshman runner Corey Kiner. Despite leading the team in rushing after back-to-back solid performances, head coach Ed Orgeron stated that Ty Davis-Price is still the starter but Kiner would get plenty of opportunities.

Unlike the Lincoln Riley version of the ‘Air Raid’ offense, Mike Leach prefers to sling it around. Last season in 11 games, the Mississippi Bulldogs finished dead last in rushing in the SEC. With just 43.9 yards per game, the only team under 100/yards per game. This year through three games they are slightly better at 45.3.

These two run games are below the century mark on a per game basis, LSU comes in at 85.7.

How do the running backs measure up?

You might want to sit down when you read these numbers.

Jo’quavious Marks Dillon Johnson vs Ty Davis-Price Corey Kiner
5-10 6-0 Ht 6-1 5-10
195 215 Wt 232 213
Sophomore Sophomore Class Junior Freshman
22 15 Att 27 23
83 79 Yards 72 130
3.8 5.3 YPA 2.7 5.7
2 1 TDs 0 2
22 16 Rec 2 0
94 116 Yards 26 0
1 0 TDs 0 0

We are going to give a slight edge to the LSU Tigers in the battle of the running backs. Both Dillon Johnson and Corey Kiner are slightly more effective based on their yards per attempt. The Tigers are a little more reliant on their run game than Mississippi State.

Runner YAC YAC/attempt Missed Tackles Forced 10+ yard runs
Marks 45 2.05 2 1
Johnson 47 3.13 0 3
Davis-Price 56 2.07 5 1
Kiner 102 4.43 13 5

It appears that the most impactful running back of the four main ones is freshman Corey Kiner. LSU needs to find more opportunities to get the ball in his hands.

Tiger Up, Tiger Down: Which LSU players stood out on Saturday

Who were the studs and duds from Saturday night? We have you covered with Tiger Up, Tiger Down for LSU.

It was a good night in Death Valley as the LSU Tigers defended their home turf at Tiger Stadium. The team improved to 35-0 in their last 35 games where they wore purple jerseys with gold pants and helmets.

Head coach Ed Orgeron had to be pleased with the performance of his team in the final tune-up game ahead of SEC play next week.

“We made some improvements tonight,” Orgeron said in his opening statement after the win. “I was very pleased with the up-tempo of our offense. I was really pleased with the play of the young receivers. I thought our quarterback, for the most part, played really well. Max had five touchdowns. You got to see what we’ve been seeing in practice with Deion Smith and those young receivers and a young running back. Some really good plays.”

Which LSU players stood out in the game? We break it down in our ‘Tiger Up, Tiger Down’ segment this week.

Per Ed Orgeron former five-star running back John Emery Jr done for the year

The LSU Tigers running back room takes a major blow with the news of John Emery Jr.

There were high hopes for former five-star running back John Emery Jr in th Jake Peetz offense. The expectation being that Peetz would use Emery in similar regard that he used Christian McCaffrey with the Carolina Panthers. That is now out the window.

Emery has missed the first two games of the season due to an academic issue and head coach Ed Orgeron previously stated that it was a week-to-week thing. On Monday the head coach announced that Emery is done for the rest of the season, a massive blow to an offense struggling to run the football.

The team has used fellow junior running back and 2019 signee, Tyrion Davis-Price. He has been hampered with injuries during camp but started both games for LSU this season. In two games he has accumulated just 68 yards on 21 carries.

The offense recently used Armoni Goodwin and Corey Kiner in the run game as well, with similar results. There is also Josh Williams. Kiner scored the first rushing touchdown of the season against the McNeese Cowboys on Saturday night.

It appears that those four running backs will likely have to carry the load after being dealt a blow with the Emery news. The only other back that could be in the mix is Tre Bradford, who re-enrolled after leaving Oklahoma a few weeks back. Orgeron stated that he expects Bradford to be eligible for the game on Saturday.

The LSU Tigers recently signed two running backs in the early signing period for the 2021 recruiting class in Corey Kiner and Armoni Goodwin.

Now, head coach Ed Orgeron is already thinking about adding one of the top running backs for 2022 in four-star Rueben Owens.

Owens, a 5-foot-11, 187-pound back from El Campo High in El Campo, Texas, recently discussed the schools that are standing out most to him, and the Tigers were one of five schools he likes best.

Owens recently spoke with Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports and discussed why each school stood out to him. LSU offered Owens first, and that certainly means something to the top player in Texas.

[lawrence-related id=14865]

“LSU was the first program to offer me and has done a great job recruiting me so far,” Owens said.

In his first year as an on-field coach for LSU, former Tiger great Kevin Faulk is certainly making an impact on the recruiting trail, and picking up a commitment from Owens would be a major boost for the Tigers in the talent-rich state of Texas.

According to 247Sports, Owens is the No. 26 overall player in 2022, the No. 1 player in Texas and the No. 2 running back in the country.

He has no timeframe for a decision and has no leader at the current time.

LSU running back commit Corey Kiner came one game short of winning the state championship for Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati.

LSU running back commit Corey Kiner came one game short of winning the state championship for Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, this fall.

Despite falling just short of a state title, Kiner’s individual honors continue to roll in.

On Wednesday, Kiner received his biggest honor for a record-breaking 2020 season when he was named Mr. Football for the state of Ohio.

Kiner, who committed to LSU in May, is a four-star running back who is expected to sign with the Tigers next week for the 2021 class.

[lawrence-related id=13982]

Interestingly enough, former LSU quarterback Joe Burrow was named Mr. Football in Ohio six years ago to the day Kiner received the award.

In Kiner’s four years at Roger Bacon, he rushed for over 7,000 yards, which ranks No. 10 in the history of the state of Ohio. Kiner’s 125 total touchdowns and 116 rushing touchdowns both rank No. 3 all-time in Ohio.

The Tigers have struggled to consistently run the football in 2020, so there is an opportunity for Kiner to play as a freshman next fall.

In the loss, the 5-foot-10, 205-pound Kiner did his best, rushing for 107 yards on 22 attempts, but it wasn’t quite enough, ending one of the most productive careers for a high school running back in the history of the state of Ohio.

Now, Kiner’s next game will be as an LSU Tiger.

Kiner’s final numbers have him in elite company in the football-rich state of Ohio.

[lawrence-related id=12903]

The four-star back committed to the Tigers back in May and posted a heartfelt message to his high school, friends, teammates and coaches on his Twitter Monday afternoon.

LSU commit Corey Kiner continues playoff run on Friday

One big reason for LSU’s strength of its recruiting class is four-star running back Corey Kiner.

[jwplayer wn8VlYuF]

The LSU Tigers have the makings of a pretty special recruiting class for 2021. One big reason for that is four-star running back Corey Kiner.

The 5-foot-10, 205-pound Kiner has his 9-0 Roger Bacon High School Spartans (Cincinnati) playing in Ohio’s Region 20 final this weekend against Springfield Shawnee.

In last week’s win over Versailles, Kiner dominated. He carried the football 21 times for 211 yards and two touchdowns.

This week, Kiner received some individual honors for his terrific season as he was named Miami Valley Conference offensive player of the year.

[lawrence-related id=12570]

In all nine of Roger Bacon’s games this fall, Kiner has scored at least two touchdowns in every game. He has missed a lot of time due to many of the team’s games being out of hand.

Kiner committed to the Tigers back in May over offers from schools such as Ohio State and Florida.

LSU has the No. 4 recruiting class in 2021, according to 247Sports.
