Five-star OL Tristan Leigh announces college decision on Saturday

The LSU Tigers added their 22nd commitment for the 2021 recruiting class early Friday with a three-star offensive lineman.

The LSU Tigers added their 22nd commitment for the 2021 recruiting class early Friday morning when three-star offensive lineman Kimo Makaneole chose the Tigers.

Makaneole was the second offensive lineman to join LSU’s 2021 class, following offensive tackle Garrett Dellinger, who signed in December’s early signing period.

More good news could be coming LSU’s way on Saturday when five-star offensive tackle Tristan Leigh makes his college decision.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound Leigh plays his high school football at Robinson Secondary in Fairfax, Virginia. He will be choosing between LSU, Clemson, Florida and Oklahoma.

Throughout Leigh’s recruitment, a new favorite has emerged multiple times. Optimism centered around LSU early this fall after Leigh and his family made the trip to Baton Rouge.

While Leigh could not meet with the coaching staff, he met with other recruits, such as quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, and reportedly had a great time.

Leigh would be a massive addition to LSU’s 2021 class and has a chance to play early in his career, regardless of where he goes.

LSU currently has the No. 4 recruiting class in 2021, according to 247Sports.

LSU Football 2021 National Signing Day Commitment Tracker

The LSU Tigers had the perfect season in 2019, going undefeated and winning the national championship.

The LSU Tigers had the perfect season in 2019, going undefeated and winning the national championship. The Tigers were such a talented team that 14 players from last season’s roster were picked in the 2020 NFL draft.

In 2020, things have been vastly different. At 4-5, LSU looks to even its record this weekend against Ole Miss in the regular-season finale.

Fortunately for the Tigers, they were so good last season that it paid dividends on the recruiting trail for 2021.

For much of the year, LSU has resided in the top five of 247Sports composite team rankings and currently sits at No. 4 on the first day of the early signing period.

Here is a complete look at LSU’s 2021 recruiting class for those who signed in the early signing period.

LSU running back commitment Corey Kiner’s legendary high school career came to an end last weekend when Ironton High defeated Kiner’s Roger Bacon High (Cincinnati) 22-19 in the state semifinals.

In the loss, the 5-foot-10, 205-pound Kiner did his best, rushing for 107 yards on 22 attempts, but it wasn’t quite enough, ending one of the most productive careers for a high school running back in the history of the state of Ohio.

Now, Kiner’s next game will be as an LSU Tiger.

Kiner’s final numbers have him in elite company in the football-rich state of Ohio.

LSU quarterback commit Garrett Nussmeier has another big night

Four-star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier committed to the LSU Tigers back in May.

Four-star quarterback Garrett Nussmeier committed to the LSU Tigers back in May. Since that time, Nussmeier has competed in the Elite 11 Finals and began the final season of his high school career.

To say Nussmeier is having a strong season would be an understatement.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound signal-caller from Marcus High in Flower Mound, Texas, had another big night in Friday’s win over Plano West High School.

Nussmeier completed 22 of 31 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Marcus High is now 7-0 on the season and looks poised for a run at the state championship.

The son of former NFL quarterback Doug Nussmeier, the current quarterbacks’ coach of the Dallas Cowboys, has passed for over 2,300 yards with 27 touchdowns on the season.

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan should return next season. The Tigers should also bring back TJ Finley and Max Johnson โ€” newcomers this fall.

However, if no player has a stranglehold on the job next fall, Nussmeier could push for playing time at quarterback.

Nussmeier and Marcus High return to action on Nov. 27 as it travels to Lewisville.

How did LSU’s Class of 2021 football recruits perform last week?

So, how did LSU’s current commitments fare last week? Here’s a look at how some of the future Tigers performed.

In certain parts of the country, the high school football season is winding down. While other areas are just getting started, some have still yet to begin.

LSU’s 2021 recruiting class has 22 players committed and has the No. 3 ranked class, according to 247Sports. Of the Tigers’ 22 commitments, 11 different states are represented.

The Tigers have recently added four new players to the 2021 class in Sage Ryan, Derrick Davis Jr., Jack Bech and Matthew Langlois, with some high-profile targets still on the board.

LSU currently has just one offensive lineman committed for 2021 in four-star Garrett Dellinger and needs to finish strong with that position group. Five-star offensive tackle Tristan Leigh remains a viable possibility for the defending national champions.

The LSU Tigers picked up a big commitment over the weekend when four-star safety Derrick Davis Jr. picked the defending champions.

The 6-foot-1, 194-pound safety from Gateway High School in Monroeville, Pa., picked LSU over Penn State, Ohio State, Georgia and Penn State.

His choice of LSU surprised some as many expected his recruitment to be a battle between Big Ten powers Ohio State and Penn State.

However, a visit to Baton Rouge recently changed everything for Davis, as he told Mike White of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

[lawrence-related id=12728]

โ€œI just loved the diversity of the college, really,” Davis said.

Davis recently visited LSU’s campus with his mother and his aunt, and while he couldn’t meet with coaches or any staff members due to the NCAA dead period, he spent plenty of time on FaceTime with the staff.

Davis explained why seeing the campus mattered the most in his decision.

Itโ€™s real important to see the campus,โ€ said Davis. โ€œDonโ€™t go to a school just looking at the facilities. Actually, go out and see the campus. Thatโ€™s what won it for LSU with me.โ€

Davis has a strong relationship with LSU safeties coach Bill Busch who compared him to LSU great Tyrann Mathieu.

[lawrence-related id=12710]

โ€œThatโ€™s a guy I just really looked up to,โ€ Davis said. “Busch told me I could be the next Honey Badger. I took that as I will be the next Honey Badger.โ€

Davis is the No. 2 safety in the 2021 class, behind Sage Ryan โ€” who committed to the Tigers just one week before Davis. He is also the No. 53 player in 2021, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Davis is expected to enroll at LSU in the spring.

LSU CB Nathaniel Wiggins receives All-American jersey

The LSU Tigers have received a commitment from an All-American cornerback in each of the last two recruiting classes.

The LSU Tigers have received a commitment from an All-American cornerback in each of the last two recruiting classes; Derek Stingley Jr. in 2019 and Eli Ricks in 2020.

Stingley Jr. had one of the best freshman campaigns of all-time in 2019 en route to LSU’s run to the national championship. Ricks already has two interceptions in the first three games of his collegiate career.

Now, the Tigers have another All-American cornerback for 2021 in four-star Nathaniel Wiggins.

Wiggins, a 6-foot-2, 170-pounder from Westlake High in Atlanta, received his jersey to the All-American Bowl this week.

The All-American Bowl is scheduled to be played on Jan. 9, 2021, in San Antonio, Texas, and broadcasted on NBC.

For Wiggins, it is a dream come true, as he told Shea Dixon of 247Sports.

“It really felt great to be selected and received my jersey,” Wiggins said. “It was like a dream come true.”

Wiggins committed to LSU back in August over offers from Alabama and Clemson, among others.

3-star tight end Jalen Shead commits to LSU

LSU landed the commitment of Jalen Shead this week.

The LSU Tigers added yet another important member to their 2021 recruiting class over the weekend when three-star tight end Jalen Shead picked the defending champions.

Shead, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound prospect from Olive Branch High in Olive Branch, Miss., chose the Tigers over Alabama and Ole Miss.

Despite LSU signing Arik Gilbert and Kole Taylor in the 2020 class, the tight end positions remains a priority in 2021. Shead was one of head coach Ed Orgeron’s top targets at the position.

[lawrence-related id=10566]

Shead is another example of a player whose ranking is probably lower than it should be due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In-person recruiting, camps and all visits have been shut down for months, giving some players less exposure.

The pass-catcher listed 20 offers, and will certainly gain more in the coming months.

Regardless of if or when more offers come, Shead appears set on his college decision.

With Shead’s commitment, the Tigers now have 18 commitments in the 2021 class and rank No. 3 in 247Sports team rankings.
