The NFL released the annual pool of compensatory draft picks for the 2021 draft on Wednesday. As expected, the Detroit Lions did not receive any comp picks.

The picks are awarded based on net free agent spending. Teams that spend more on incoming free agents the prior offseason than what the players they let go in free agency earn with their new teams and contracts don’t earn cop picks. The Lions were net spenders in free agency. Players who were cut or traded do not count in the comp pick formula, only ones whose contracts expired.

Detroit hasn’t earned a compensatory pick since 2016, when they were awarded the No. 95 overall pick for losing Ndamukong Suh to free agency. Signing free agents was a key to the team-building process under former GM Bob Quinn, so the Lions spending has far exceeded the net losses in free agency over the last several years.

Updated Chiefs draft picks following compensatory pick announcement

The Kansas City Chiefs officially have eight picks in the 2021 NFL draft.

The NFL has officially awarded compensatory draft picks to teams for the 2021 NFL draft, and the Kansas City Chiefs are among the eight teams to receive two picks. Kansas City earned two Day 3 picks as a result of the losses of Emmanuel Ogbah and Kendall Fuller during the 2020 free agency period.

Here’s an updated look at the eight picks that the Chiefs currently hold:

  • Round 1, Pick 31
  • Round 2, Pick 63
  • Round 3, Pick 95
  • Round 4, Pick ??
  • Round 4, Pick 144 (Kendall Fuller comp pick)
  • Round 5, Pick ??
  • Round 5, Pick 181 (Emmanuel Ogbah comp pick)
  • Round 6, Pick ?? (Acquired in trade for RB DeAndre Washington).

The NFL hasn’t yet announced the full draft order yet. We’ll soon know where the Chiefs are picking in Rounds 4, 5, and 6 once they do.

If the Chiefs don’t trade out of pick No. 63, this will be the third consecutive season they’ve made a pick at that spot. The previous two selections landed DB Juan Thornhill and LB Willie Gay Jr., so they seem to be pretty good at acquiring defensive talent at that draft slot.

Additionally, when it comes to the compensatory picks, it’s worth noting that L’Jarius Sneed and Mike Danna were both taken in the fourth and fifth round respectively. Two of the biggest defensive standouts from the 2020 draft class came in the two rounds that the Chiefs now have multiple picks in. That seems like good news for Brett Veach and his staff.

Texans not awarded any compensatory picks

The Houston Texans did not receive any compensatory picks due to the lopsidedness of signing free agents in 2020 compared to the ones they lost.

The Houston Texans didn’t get anything in their stockings.

According to the NFL on Tuesday, the release of the compensatory picks for the 2021 NFL draft revealed that the Texans will not receive any additional picks in April’s draft.

Lance Zuerlein from NFL.com explained how compensatory picks worked in April of 2020.

Teams are awarded compensatory draft picks between Rounds 3 and 7 based upon a league formula that takes into account the following criteria for players who left the team to sign elsewhere as free agents: average salary per year (APY), snap count and postseason awards. While there is an expected level of compensation for a player based on the amount he has signed for, his playing time (or lack thereof) in the upcoming season could alter the expectation. To qualify for compensatory picks, teams must end up with more qualifying free agents lost than gained in a particular year.

The number of compensatory picks allotted each year is limited to the number of teams in the league (32), per the collective bargaining agreement. However, compensatory picks are not divided up equally among the teams, and no team can receive more than four compensatory picks in a single year.

There were alterations to the methodology of determining compensatory value/picks with this year’s collective bargaining agreement. It’s likely that we will see most, if not all, of the compensatory picks land between Rounds 3 and 6 because of these changes.

Although the Texans could have received a compensatory pick with the Cincinnati Bengals signing defensive tackle in free agency, the Texans signed too many free agents in the first wave of free agency in receiver Randall Cobb, safety Eric Murray, safety Jaylen Watkins, and guard Brent Qvale to be considered part of the compensatory formula.

If the Texans want more draft picks in the upcoming draft, they will need to consider trading other assets.

2021 NFL draft: Panthers awarded 2 sixth-round compensatory picks

The Carolina Panthers will be getting two compensatory picks in this year’s NFL draft, both coming in the sixth round.

The Carolina Panthers will be getting two compensatory picks in this year’s NFL draft, both coming in the sixth round.

The league just made it official. Here is a look at each 2021 comp pick, per Michael Signora.

These two extra sixth-round picks account for Carolina losing defensive tackle Vernon Butler and offensive lineman Daryl Williams in free agency last year. Both signed with the Bills and had relatively strong 2020 seasons.

Keeping Curtis Samuel around is still our preferred choice, but if he does walk the Panthers should at least be in line for a pretty solid comp pick next year.

Cowboys awarded 4 comp picks, here’s how and where their 10 draft picks come from

The Dallas Cowboys now know exactly how many picks in the 2021 NFL draft they have and where they land.

After projections have gone back and forth over the course of the season and the months that follow, the official word is in. The Dallas Cowboys have been awarded four compensatory picks for the 2021 NFL draft based on free agents lost in the 2020 offseason.

On the same day the league announced the official salary cap for the season, the draft order is now fully known. Dallas has an extra pick following the third, fourth, fifth and sixth rounds, getting the maximum comp picks allowed as the league doles out an entire round’s worth (32) of compensatory picks to teams.

Report: Vikings awarded two compensatory draft picks

The moment is finally here: The Minnesota Vikings have been awarded two compensatory draft picks for the 2021 NFL draft.

Minnesota saw a mass exodus in free agency last offseason. Now, the Vikings have two compensatory draft picks to show for it.

The team has been awarded a fourth-rounder and a sixth-round pick, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The fourth-round selection is 144th overall, while the sixth-round draft choice is 223rd overall.

Minnesota is in a tough spot with the salary cap, so adding talent on rookie contracts will be crucial for 2021. These two extra picks should provide some help.

Minnesota now has 12 total selections for the 2021 NFL draft. However, the Vikings currently do not have a second-round pick, because of the trade to acquire DE Yannick Ngakoue. Here is the case for the Vikings to trade back in the NFL draft.

Packers receive three compensatory draft picks in 2021 draft

The Packers received a compensatory pick in the fourth round, fifth round and sixth round.

The Green Bay Packers received three compensatory draft picks on Wednesday.

The team will now hold 10 total draft picks in the 2021 NFL draft.

As a result of losing three different free agents last offseason, the Packers received a compensatory pick in the fourth round, fifth round and sixth round.

The three picks:

Fourth round, No. 142 overall
Fifth round, No. 177 overall
Sixth round, No. 219 overall

The Packers lost linebacker Blake Martinez, offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga and edge rusher Kyler Fackrell in free agency last March, creating the three compensatory picks.

The Packers now have their original pick in all seven rounds plus three compensatory picks. They will have multiple picks in the fourth, fifth and sixth rounds.

This is the first year the Packers have received a compensatory draft pick since 2019.

The Packers received the highest compensatory draft pick in the fifth round, as a result of losing Bulaga.

NFL announces 2021 compensatory draft picks

The 2021 NFL Draft starts at the end of April and the league informed the teams where their compensatory picks will line up.

The NFL Draft starts on April 29 and now all 32 teams know what compensatory draft picks they will have if any.

The New England Patriots pick up the first one, the 96th overall selection. There are 11 overall compensatory picks at the end of the third round with the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers each receiving a pair.

Chiefs awarded 2 compensatory picks in 2021 NFL draft

As expected, the Kansas City Chiefs are receiving a fourth and fifth-round compensatory pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

The NFL has officially announced compensatory draft picks for the 2021 NFL draft and the Kansas City Chiefs are among the teams set to receive multiple picks.

The Chiefs were awarded a fourth- and fifth-round pick by the NFL, which was exactly what they were previously projected to receive. The Chiefs didn’t sign any players to offset contracts signed by Emmanuel Ogbah and Kendall Fuller, who left the team during the 2020 free agency period. Because of that, Kansas City is now reaping the rewards in the 2021 NFL draft.

They’ll pick in Round 4 at No. 144 overall and Round 5 at No. 181 overall according to the latest update from the NFL. They revised their initial announcement due to an error.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach has only once made a compensatory pick in the draft prior to this year, selecting RB Darwin Thompson in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft. The Chiefs were not awarded any compensatory draft picks in 2020. The team did receive a compensatory pick in the 2018 NFL draft, but it was moved to acquire DB Jordan Lucas in trade with the Miami Dolphins.

Assuming that the Chiefs don’t do much trading in the 2021 NFL draft, the team is set to have a total of eight draft picks this year. That means this has the potential to be the largest draft class of Veach’s tenure as general manager. Each of his three draft classes since taking over has included just six players.
