After free agency splashes, Broncos not expected to get comp pick for Dre’Mont Jones

After making a few splash moves in free agency, the Broncos are not expected to receive a comp pick for Dre’Mont Jones in 2024.

The sting of losing defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones won’t be relieved by a third-round compensatory draft pick in 2024.

The NFL compensates teams who lost more high-priced free agents than they gained with comp picks each spring. Because they lost Jones to a big contract with the Seattle Seahawks, the Denver Broncos — in theory — could have received a third-round comp pick in 2024.

That departure, however, will be canceled out by Denver’s own splashes in free agency. In fact, the player the Broncos signed to replace Jones — defensive lineman Zach Allen — will earn enough to cancel out Jones’ candidacy for a comp pick, according to OverTheCap.com.

Denver might have also been eligible for a seventh-round comp pick for losing tight end/fullback Andrew Beck, but that loss will be canceled out by the arrival of new running back Samaje Perine, according to OTC.

The Broncos have greatly improved their roster in free agency, but that will likely prevent them from receiving any comp picks in 2024. If the signings work out, that will be a fine trade-off for Denver.

Broncos might not be able to get a high comp pick for Chris Harris in 2021

The Broncos aren’t expected to get an early-round compensatory draft pick for losing Chris Harris.

Chris Harris has agreed to sign with the Chargers, which is bad news for the Broncos in more ways than one.

Because he signed a deal averaging just $8.5 million per year, Harris is not projected to fetch an early-round compensatory draft pick in 2021, according to Nick Korte of OverTheCap.com.

The league awards compensatory picks to teams who lost more in free agency than they gained the previous offseason.

Last year, Denver offered Harris a three-year deal that averaged $12 million per season. Harris turned that offer down and, as Korte noted, it ended up hurting both parties.

Harris had to settle for an average of $3.5 million less per season and the Broncos won’t be eligible for a high-round comp pick for losing him. Instead, Harris’ contract is projected to be worth a fifth-round comp pick, according to OTC. Denver might not even get that, either.

As it stands now, the addition of offensive lineman Graham Glasgow is projected to cancel out the loss of Harris, according to OTC’s cancellation chart. Depending on who else the Broncos lose in free agency, the team might not get a comp pick for Harris at all.

NFL gives 3 compensatory draft picks to Broncos

The NFL has given the Broncos three compensatory picks for the 2020 NFL draft.

Each offseason, the NFL awards compensatory draft picks to teams who lost more (or better) free agents than they acquired the previous offseason.

For example, if cornerback Chris Harris left Denver and signed a $14 million-per-year contract with another team and the Broncos replaced him with a $4 million-year-year cornerback, Denver would likely receive a comp pick for Harris in 2021.

The league announced 2020 comp picks on Tuesday and the Broncos have been awarded three selections for this year’s draft. The NFL does not announce who the picks are helping compensate for but OverTheCap.com (OTC) makes projections each year.

Denver received an extra fifth-round pick (No. 178) and two seventh-round picks (Nos. 252 and 254). OTC projects that the fifth-round selection was awarded for losing offensive lineman Billy Turner last offseason. The seventh-round picks might have been for losing offensive lineman Max Garcia and cornerback Tramaine Brock in 2019.

The Broncos are now slated to have 11 selections in the 2020 NFL draft, which is scheduled to be held in Las Vegas from April 23-25.

Trading for A.J. Bouye might make Broncos more likely to receive a comp pick for Chris Harris in 2021

After acquiring A.J. Bouye through a trade, the Broncos might be able to land a high compensatory draft pick for Chris Harris in 2021.

Each offseason, the NFL awards compensatory draft picks to teams who lost more than they gained in free agency the previous year.

So if the Broncos lost Chris Harris this offseason and signed a big-name free agent cornerback, they probably wouldn’t receive a comp pick for Harris in 2021 because the new CB’s big contract would cancel out the loss of Harris.

Comp picks only account for free agency, though. Trades aren’t part of the formula.

By acquiring cornerback A.J. Bouye through a trade with the Jaguars, Denver might have preserved a potential comp pick for Harris.

As Nick Korte of OverTheCap.com has pointed out on Twitter, the Broncos could get a third-round pick for Harris in 2021, depending on who the team signs during free agency.

Denver sent a fourth-round pick to Jacksonville in exchange for Bouye so the team could end up with a younger cornerback and a higher draft pick. That would be some shrewd business from general manager John Elway.

There’s still a chance that the Broncos will bring back Harris on a contract extension, but it’s a slim chance.
