College Wires writers make their Week 5 Pac-12 selections

Week 5 shouldn’t contain many surprises, if any, but that’s when chaos usually happens. Our Pac-12 writers make their picks.

The Pac-12 football schedule was in full swing last week, but there weren’t any surprises. Arizona State hung with USC for as long as it could before the Trojans won, 42-28. Utah outlasted UCLA, 14-7. Perhaps the biggest so-called surprise, although no one in Pullman would say it was a shock, the Cougars defeated Oregon State by three.

Surprises shouldn’t be on the docket in the conference this week either. The only toss-up game will be in Berkeley as California hosts Arizona State. Two mediocre teams playing each other could make for an exciting and close game.

Oregon State hosts Utah on Friday, and everyone is going to want to see how Colorado rebounds after its first loss of the season.

The College Wires Pac-12 scribes enter their picks for Week 5 of conference action with some differing opinions for that Golden Bears-Sun Devils matchup.

Behind Enemy Lines: Buffaloes writer discusses Colorado’s upcoming trip to Autzen

We wanted to learn as much as possible about Colorado before the big game Saturday, so we went to Buffs writer Tony Cosolo for answers.

It’s the first real big game of the season for the Oregon Ducks, and who knew it would come in the form of the Colorado Buffaloes?

Both teams come into the game ranked in the Top 20 and for the first time in a very long time, Colorado has all the confidence of the world thanks to head coach Deion Sanders and the three wins under their belt.

Now the circus is on its way to Eugene, so we talked to USA TODAY’s Buffaloes Wire’s own Tony Cosolo about all things Buffaloes before the big game on ABC Saturday.

But Colorado will be shorthanded with two-way star Travis Hunter out. How big of an impact will that make on the final score of the game? Does Colorado have a legitimate chance of winning and what will that mean to their program? We asked Tony about these things surrounding the contest and much more.

CollegeWire writers make their Week 2 Pac-12 selections

The CollegeWire Pac-12 scribes met up and predicted how Week 2 of the season will go down.

Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes gave the Pac-12 a perfect Week 1 and they also gave our friends over at BuffaloesWire something significant to talk about for the first time in a long while.

Even Stanford, who is picked to finish last, managed a win over Hawaii.

Now as Week 2 approaches, that success is expected to wain just a bit as the competition gets a little tougher. But there are still a lot of questions to be answered such as can Colorado handle success? Will Oregon be tested in its first road game of the season? And can UCLA go into SEC Country and bring home a win?

Our Pac-12 writers from across the three sites bring you our predictions for a busy second full week of the college football season.

CollegeWire Pac-12 writers selects Heisman and conference winners

CollegeWire’s Pac-12 writers gathered together to discuss the final Pac-12 football season and who will win the Heisman.

After this season, the five CollegeWire writers who cover Pac-12 sports and our respective teams will no longer be able to get together and discuss how the Conference of Champions is going. Oregon and USC are moving to the Big Ten and Colorado is going back to some old stomping grounds in the Big XII.

So to celebrate, or more like, commiserate, we got together to talk about how the 2023 Pac-12 season will go. In separate articles, we went over each schedule (USC, Oregon, Colorado) and picked the winner of each game.

We also discussed who is going to win the Heisman Trophy and which two teams will meet up in Vegas and win the very last Pac-12 football title. It’s hard to believe that is the case, but here we are.

Oregon Ducks Football: 2023 game-by-game staff predictions

The CollegeWire’s Pac-12 writers that cover Oregon, Colorado and USC got together and predicted each game on the Ducks’ schedule.

We just started.

TrojansWire is four years old. Then came DucksWire and ColoradoBuffaloesWire is the baby of the family. But this will be the final season we are all together in the Pac-12 as Oregon and USC move to the Big Ten and Colorado goes back to the Big XII.

So in one last hurrah, we all got together to discuss what will happen with our teams in this final Pac-12 season. TrojansWire editor Matt Zemek, writer Matt Wadleigh, BuffalosWire editor Jack Carlough and of course, DucksWire editor Zac Neel and I talked about how 2023 was going to shape up.

We gave our predictions for each team and the final Pac-12 standings. Here’s how we each think Oregon’s season will go game-by-game. There was a consensus in the obvious games, but when it came to the USC, Washington, and even OSU games, there was a difference of opinion.

No matter what, 2023 promises to be one memorable season for all of us.

BuffaloesWire covered many losses but did win “Pick the Pac”

BuffaloesWire’s own Jack Carlough saw many, many losses in Boulder, but did manage to win the first annual “Pick the Pac.”

Buffs win!

That’s only been said once in the 2022 college football season. Colorado defeated California 20-13 in overtime on Oct. 15. But shortly afterwards, head coach Karl Dorrell was fired.

We won’t be firing anyone at Buffaloes Wire, however. Given that they had to watch that dreadful team, editor Jack Carlough didn’t let that waver from winning the first annual Pick the Pac. His 73-16 overall record, a .820 win percentage, was two games better than Trojans Wire’s own Matt Zemek, who made a late rally toward the top.

Here at DucksWire, Zac and Andy tied with a 69-20 record with Don coming in a game behind at 68-21.

We definitely wanted to win this, but as they say, there’s always next year!

Name Last Week’s Record Overall Record
Jack Carlough (Buffaloes Wire) 5-1 73-16

Picking the Pac: College Wire staff makes Week 12 selections

The Pac-12 upsets from last week didn’t hurt the CollegeWire Pick the Pac standings too much, but the records took a hit.

The Pac-12 endured its own chaos last week with two big upsets no one saw coming. Oregon lost to Washington and Arizona stunned UCLA. Since no one picked these upsets, the College Wire Pick the Pac standings didn’t experience a shakeup.

With just two weeks left, Jack Carlough seems to have a comfortable lead over three writers tied for second. As we look at the schedule, there are more 50-50 games this week than there have been at any time of the season. Can Stanford win The Big Game? Will Arizona’s run toward bowl eligibility continue? And who is truly the King of Los Angeles?

Here are the standings and how the College Wire staff believes what those answers will be come Sunday morning.

Name Last Week’s Record Overall Record
Jack Carlough (Buffaloes Wire) 4-2 64-13
Don Smalley (Ducks Wire) 3-3 61-16
Tony Cosolo (Buffaloes Wire) 4-2 61-16
Matt Zemek (Trojans Wire) 4-2 61-16
Zac Neel (Ducks Wire) 4-2 60-17
Patrick Conn (College Wire) 4-2 59-18
Andy Patton (Ducks Wire) 4-2 58-19
Don James (Trojans Wire) 3-3 57-20
Matt Wadleigh (Trojans Wire) 4-2 57-20

Behind Enemy Lines: Covering the Buffs is tough duty these days

We spoke to @BuffaloesWire Jack Carlough about the tough season in Boulder and what we should look for on Saturday.

It would be tough days at the office here at DucksWire if the Oregon football team had little to no chance of winning weekly. Imagine having that feeling we all had after the Georgia game and then experiencing that every Saturday night.

That’s what Colorado fans and those covering the Buffaloes have to deal with. It’s not a good situation in Boulder and since the Ducks have to go out on the road and play the 1-7 Colorado team, we turned to our pal over at BuffaloesWire, Jack Carlough, to get his unique perspective on one of the biggest mismatches of the conference this season.

We talked about a variety of subjects, including the weather for this game. Here’s what Jack had to say.

Picking the Pac – College Wire staff makes Week 9 selections

In the short schedule of games, the Pac-12 presented last week, there weren’t many upsets and the Pick the Pac standings reflect it.

Stanford kicking five field goals to sneak past Arizona State cost several College Wire staff members a perfect record for Week 8. But Don Smalley (me) got lucky and was able to weasel into second place thanks to the Cardinal kicker Joshua Karty.

Unless there are some upsets in Week 9, it’ll be difficult to move up the standings as the staff is in agreement for most of the games. There was a variety of picks for the ASU-Colorado game and Stanford was able to gain a believer in DucksWire’s own Andy Patton.

Here are the current standings and our Pick the Pac selections for another brief docket of games in the Conference of Champions.

Name Last Week’s Record Overall Record
Jack Carlough (Buffaloes Wire) 4-0 50-10
Don Smalley (Ducks Wire) 4-0 48-12
Zac Neel (Ducks Wire) 3-1 47-13
Tony Cosolo (Buffaloes Wire) 3-1 47-13
Patrick Conn (College Wire) 3-1 46-14
Matt Zemek (Trojans Wire) 3-1 46-14
Don James (Trojans Wire) 2-2 44-16
Andy Patton (Ducks Wire) 3-1 44-16
Matt Wadleigh (Trojans Wire) 3-1 43-17

Picking the Pac – CollegeWire staff makes their Week 8 selections

A few upsets damaged some of the CollegeWire staff’s overall record, but we forge on with our Week 8 picks for the Pac-12.

Ouch.

For the first time this season, upsets took a sledgehammer to the College Wire staff picks. No one saw Stanford going into South Bend and defeating Notre Dame and after a slow start, Buffs Wire’s own Tony Cosolo has become Nostradamus by picking Colorado to win for the first time in 2022.

As for the rest of us, it was a dumpster fire. Only two staff members managed a winning record last week. With a small, but explosive week in the Pac-12 with UCLA going to Oregon, the standings are sure to shift once again.

Name Last Week’s Record Overall Record
Jack Carlough (Buffaloes Wire) 3-2 46-10
Tony Cosolo (Buffaloes Wire) 3-2 44-12
Zac Neel (Ducks Wire) 2-3 44-12
Don Smalley (Ducks Wire) 2-3 44-12
Patrick Conn (College Wire) 1-4 43-13
Matt Zemek (Trojans Wire) 2-3 43-13
Don James (Trojans Wire) 1-4 42-14
Andy Patton (Ducks Wire) 1-4 41-15
Matt Wadleigh (Trojans Wire) 2-3 40-16
