College football recruiting watchlist: USA TODAY Sports college wires weigh in on Class of 2023

USA TODAY Sports college wire editors share their thoughts about the most exciting prospect from some of the top Power Five programs in the country.

The Class of 2023 left the football recruiting world—and college fan bases—entranced for well over a year and a half, with high-profile names like Arch Manning creating significant buzz about their possible college landing spots.

The hype didn’t fall short on the field in 2022, either, as the top-tier crop  delivered consistently, adding to the excitement about one of the better classes in recent high school football history.

And now that the signing-period commotion is in the rearview, we know where the ’23 talents are headed to begin their college football careers, which introduces the other side of the recruiting tunnel.

To better grasp that part of the equation, we’ve turned to the USA TODAY Sports college wire writers who will be following the top recruits at Power Five schools in the SEC, Big Ten, Pac-12, ACC, and beyond in 2023.

Our question was simple: Who are you most excited to watch from the Class of 2023?

Here’s what they had to say…

Local four-star Assane Diop commits to Colorado over Arkansas, Seton Hall

Colorado’s 2023 class received another impressive boost with Assane Diop’s pledge

Tad Boyle is on a roll.

One week after signing both Cody Williams and Courtney Anderson, the Buffaloes men’s basketball team received a commitment on Tuesday from Assane Diop, the state of Colorado’s No. 2 Class of 2023 prospect. Diop is a 6-foot-10 big man at Accelerated Prep in Denver and he picked the Buffs over  Arkansas and Seton Hall.

Colorado’s 2023 class is now ranked No. 15 in the nation and No. 2 in the Pac-12 with the addition of Diop.

In an interview with 247Sports, the composite four-star recruit revealed that his decision was based on a few different factors:

“I chose Colorado because of their play style and the conference they’re in,” he said “I like the Pac-12 a lot and they were the only one in my final three in the conference. My family liked the team, it’s home, I like their play and the coaches. I really appreciated the staff, they really helped me a lot.”

“They’ve had a lot of players like me at Colorado and that’s the Pac-12 as a whole. The bigs they developed are big and can move so why not choose them.”

Colorado hosting four-star recruit Jojo Solis for Arizona State game

Four-star running back Jojo Solis is set to be at Folsom on Saturday

It’s Homecoming week in Boulder and the Colorado Buffaloes have an opportunity to impress some recruits during a winnable game against Arizona State.

One of those recruits in attendance will be San Bernardino, California running back Jojo Solis, who received an offer from the Buffs back in August. Per 247Sports, Solis is a four-star prospect with three other Pac-12 offers, including Washington State, Arizona State and Cal. He’s only a sophomore at Aquinas High School, though, so he should continue gaining Division I attention.

Colorado is also hosting 2026 wide receiver Jewellz “JuJu” Parm, 2024 WR Aiden Hall and 2024 safety RJ Whitten, as announced by their Twitter accounts.

Colorado football recruiting: Dorrell’s dismissal hasn’t yet scared commits away

This could change, but the Buffs’ 2023 commits have stayed loyal post-Dorrell

To Karl Dorrell’s credit, he and his staff were beginning to create some recruiting momentum with both Colorado’s current freshman class and its group of 2023 commits.

All 17 of the Buffs’ 2023 commits are three-stars, but the class is still ranked seventh in the Pac-12 per 247Sports. Things will likely change quickly, though, with Dorrell now out of Boulder. A large part of a recruit’s decision to commit is because of the head coach and even though Dorrell was fired for poor performance, there’s a chance that a different coaching staff becomes a dealbreaker for some.

Yet almost one week since his firing, none of the Buffs’ current commits have changed their minds. That’s great news and it suggests that they’re choosing Colorado based on more than just its head coach — an especially wise decision in today’s age of college football. Or maybe they’re just hanging tight until everything plays out.

247Sports recruiting analyst Brandon Huffman was featured in the Wilner Hotline on Friday and he found Colorado’s luck so far “encouraging.”

The big news this week was the firing of Colorado coach Karl Dorrell, and it will be interesting to see how CU’s 2022-23 recruiting class shakes out with the change. The outcome depends partly on which coaches are retained.

The players who have already committed are pretty optimistic. Right now, the Buffaloes have the seventh-ranked class in the Pac-12 with 17 total commitments — all of them three-star prospects.

And crucially, nobody had de-committed yet. If you’re a CU fan, that’s encouraging.

2023 wide receiver Wesley Greaves commits to Colorado

The Buffs hauled in a speedy wide receiver from Texas

The Buffaloes have picked up another commitment for their 2023 recruiting class, hauling in wide receiver Wesley Greaves from College Station, Texas.

Greaves is listed as a 6-foot-2, 185-pound three-star prospect according to 247Sports. He made his commitment known on Monday after an unofficial visit to Boulder just the week prior.

The visit must have been special because here’s what he told BuffStampede’s Adam Munsterteiger:

“I had no plan to commit…. But with the whole experience of visiting Colorado, the way they treated me and my mom, I really enjoyed it. They showed us around and the whole coaching staff was just really honest with us and it made me feel at home.”

Speed is the name of his game. Per a tweet from last year, he set the all-time fastest 40-yard dash in his high school’s history, turning n a blazing 4.39:

Welcome to Boulder, Wesley!
