Pac-12 NCAA Tournament fortunes decline as Colorado loses to Caitlin Clark, Iowa

We’re happy for @HawkeyesWire but sad for @BuffaloesWire after Caitlin Clark moved to the Elite Eight with a win over CU.

One College Wire site was going to win, one was going to lose. It turned out that the Pac-12 got the short end of this deal, while Caitlin Clark moved within one win of a Final Four appearance.

We have to admit that it would be an electric, wonderful story for college basketball if Clark — the most electric player in the sport today, women or men — reaches the Final Four, the final weekend of the whole season. However, Clark’s victory with the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday in the Sweet 16 meant that a Pac-12 team, the Colorado Buffaloes, has to go home without a Final Four ticket.

Hawkeyes Wire and Buffaloes Wire both covered Iowa’s 87-77 win over Colorado on Friday evening in Seattle. Iowa advances to play Louisville in the Elite Eight on Sunday in the Pacific Northwest.

Hawkeyes Wire’s Riley Donald wrote:

“Survive and advance! That’s the name of the game and that is exactly what the Iowa Hawkeyes found a way to do tonight in their Sweet 16 battle against the Colorado Buffaloes. The Hawkeyes are headed to the Elite 8 and it wasn’t without a little sweat but that is what makes it fun.

“The Buffaloes hung tough with the Hawkeyes for quite a while, even holding a 40-39 lead at halftime and never quite went away. They made Iowa work for this one and earn every single point.”

The Pac-12 is down to one team in the Women’s NCAA Tournament. UCLA faces No. 1 South Carolina on Saturday. The Bruins are a massive underdog against the unbeaten Gamecocks, the defending national champions.

Stanford clinches share of Pac-12 title with double-OT win in Colorado

Stanford overcame Colorado and a lot of hardships to win a big late-season game. This is where #USC wants to be in the future.

The USC Trojans are on a journey toward greatness. Lindsay Gottlieb and assistant coach Beth Burns have the Women of Troy on the right track. USC is ahead of schedule, reaching the NCAA Tournament in Year 2 of Gottlieb’s tenure. Top national recruit Juju Watkins will enter the program next season. Some transfer additions should make the roster even better. USC is on its way up.

The Trojans realize, however, that attaining elite status requires a combination of elite quality and elite toughness.

The Trojans have the elite toughness. Stanford shows what elite quality looks like. This is what USC wants to become. This is where USC wants to go.

Stanford overcame No. 21 Colorado on Thursday afternoon to clinch a share of the Pac-12 regular-season championship.

Buffaloes Wire noted how much of a fight Colorado gave to Stanford:

“After taking a 19-5 lead midway through the second quarter, CU had an opportunity to put away Stanford, which began the game 1-for-21 from the field. But the Cardinal corrected their offensive woes and surpassed the Buffs early in the third quarter.

“While the final score was disappointing, the Buffs should hold their heads high knowing that they took the No. 3 team in the country to double overtime. Especially on defense, Colorado proved once again that it can play with the best in the country.

“The Buffs will look to build some momentum heading into the Pac-12 Tournament.”

Stanford had to deal with the nightmarish start and a tough Colorado team. The Cardinal also had to deal with a late arrival in Boulder due to nasty weather conditions. The Cardinal didn’t have a pregame shootaround.

They were also playing this game early Thursday afternoon (2 p.m. Pacific time) after playing a rare Monday night game against UCLA.

A normal Pac-12 game schedule usually involves a Sunday afternoon game, then a Friday night game for the next homestand or road trip. Stanford had a Monday-Thursday schedule, with the Thursday game being an early tip. The UCLA game was tough, intense, close, and draining. It was easy to imagine a scenario in which the Cardinal had nothing in the tank for Colorado.

Moreover, Stanford star Cameron Brink scored only eight points, snapping a 21-game streak with 10 or more points. She fouled out in the first overtime period.

Everything went against Stanford.

Yet, the Cardinal still won.

That’s championship mettle. That’s elite toughness and quality depth coming to the surface, with backup big Lauren Betts giving Stanford huge minutes off the bench and Fran Belibi providing some worker-bee minutes at both ends of the floor. Haley Jones played all 50 minutes and gave Tara VanDerveer 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists.

USC played Stanford tough in two meetings this season. Viewed solely through that prism, the Trojans are close to the Cardinal.

However, where USC clearly falls short of the Stanford standard is in the full journey through a season. USC did not challenge itself in nonconference games, whereas Stanford takes on tough teams, including No. 1 South Carolina and Tennessee this season.

USC will finish in the middle of the Pac-12. Stanford will finish tied for first, showing the consistency USC is close to attaining, but hasn’t found just yet.

Lindsay Gottlieb can point to Stanford’s win over Colorado and tell her USC players, “That’s the team we want to become.”

It will be fascinating to see how quickly USC can rise to the Stanford standard.

Pac-12 women’s basketball report: Stanford stunned, Utah ties for first

Stanford’s loss to Washington abruptly turned the Pac-12 race. Utah’s title odds have risen, and Colorado is back in the hunt.

The Stanford Cardinal lost to USC three weeks ago, but had not lost a game since then. The Cardinal were still leading the Pac-12 standings heading into their Sunday game in Seattle against the Washington Huskies. USC won in Seattle two weeks ago, but it wasn’t easy. The Trojans had to battle into overtime to finish off UW.

The Huskies haven’t thrived in the Pac-12 this season, but they have been consistently competitive. Stanford was fully expected to win, but Washington was going to make the Trees earn it.

Washington picked quite a time to break through and play crunch-time minutes better than it had at any previous point this year.

Washington had come up short in OT against USC, late in regulation against UCLA, and against other high-profile opponents. On this day, however, the Huskies stacked together several late-game defensive stops. They also crashed the boards and scored 30 points in the second quarter after an eight-point first quarter. Trailing 65-63 with 3:19 left, they scored the next eight points and earned a 72-67 win.

Washington finished plus-10 in rebounds and allowed only two offensive boards to Stanford’s powerful front line. A team which had knocked on the door but hadn’t busted through finally crossed the threshold …

much as USC finally broke through against the same Stanford team after losing twice to UCLA by a combined total of four points.

Stanford’s loss to Washington, combined with Utah’s win at Oregon on Sunday, pushed the Utes into a first-place tie with the Cardinal. Colorado swept the Oregon schools as well to be one game back.

It’s a three-team race again after it seemed Stanford and Utah were separating from the pack.

Stanford goes to Colorado and Utah on the final weekend of the regular season in late February. Those two games are likely to decide the 2023 Pac-12 champion.

Pac-12 basketball bubble picture gains clarity with Oregon losing to Stanford, CU losing to Washington

If there was any lingering doubt, Oregon and Colorado torched their NCAA Tournament resumes with bad losses. They will need to win the Pac-12 Tournament.

We entered the past week in Pac-12 men’s basketball knowing that if Oregon and Colorado were going to make any move in the pursuit of an NCAA Tournament berth, they needed to get on a roll and stay hot for several weeks.

That very clearly did not happen this past week.

Oregon lost to Pac-12 bottom-feeder Stanford on Saturday night. The Ducks’ pattern of going from elite to awful and back again continues. The team which crushed Arizona by 19 one week ago turned into a pumpkin against Stanford, a team which entered Saturday’s game 1-7 in the Pac-12. This has been Oregon’s modus operandi the past two seasons, not just this one.

Ducks wire had more on the story:

“On Saturday night, Oregon closed out their Bay Area road trip with a disastrous loss to the Stanford Cardinal, falling 71-64 to the last-place team in the Pac-12. It feature abysmal shooting, poor effort until it was too late, and another head-scratcher for Altman in a season that’s been full of them,” Ducks Wire editor Zachary Neel wrote.

“The Ducks’ chance at an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament is all but dashed, and it’s seeming likely that it will be another trip to the NIT for Oregon.”

Meanwhile, a few days before Oregon face-planted, Colorado lost at home to Washington. The Buffaloes got swept by the mediocre Huskies this season, having lost in Seattle in early December. Colorado has lost to Cal and is 3-6 in the Pac-12. CU’s NCAA hopes — barring a Pac-12 Tournament championship run — have been put to bed.

So, the bubble picture in the Pac-12 is fairly clear. UCLA and Arizona are NCAA Tournament locks, leaving Arizona State, USC and Utah as three teams vying for at-large berths. ASU is currently in the best position, but not by much, after getting blasted by USC. The Trojans’ big win moves them closer to ASU, and Utah’s sweep of the Washington schools improves their bubble position.

Notably, USC is 2-0 against ASU and Utah, and will have one more game against each school in the coming weeks.

Colorado plays its way out of NCAA Tournament conversation with horrific loss to Cal

Colorado might win 10 games in a row, but unless something like that happens in the next several weeks, the Buffs will not make the NCAAs. You can’t lose to Cal.

The Colorado Buffaloes haven’t been officially eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, but they’re certainly off the radar right now and won’t merit any discussion as a serious candidate unless or until something changes.

If there was any lingering uncertainty about Colorado’s NCAA Tournament resume, that uncertainty was smashed by an 80-76 loss to the California Golden Bears on Saturday. The setback in Berkeley — to a team which entered the game with a 1-13 record — is a crusher for any bubble team. Yes, we’re still two and a half months until Selection Sunday, but for a Colorado team which already has some not-very-good losses (UMass, Grambling, Washington) on the ledger sheet, a loss to Cal is worth at least two seed lines for selection purposes. If Colorado was, hypothetically, the 18th or 19th team outside the at-large field before this game, the Buffs are now close to being the 30th team outside the field.

They probably went into this game needing at least one win over UCLA or Arizona, plus more good wins against the third through fifth teams in the Pac-12, to carve out a path to the NCAA Tournament. Losing to Cal virtually guarantees that CU must beat both the Bruins and Wildcats (or beat one of them twice) and win other games against the upper half of the Pac-12 to make the NCAA Tournament.

Good luck with that.

This is good news for USC. The Trojans aren’t likely to make the NCAA Tournament, but they’re not unlikely to make it, either. They’re a 50-50 case at this point. However, their odds do go up with other Pac-12 teams losing ground. Colorado isn’t currently a threat to take an at-large bid away from USC. The Pac-12 has UCLA and Arizona as tournament locks. Then comes a trio of teams with legitimate at-large chances.

USC is one of those teams. Colorado is not.

Arizona State and Utah are the other two teams. Utah had a great weekend, sweeping Cal and Stanford on the road. Arizona State lost at home to Arizona.

Arizona vs Colorado Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

Just when it seemed like Arizona might be slipping a wee bit after a 84-81 fight against Oregon … boom.

The Wildcats went to Utah and came away with a dominant 20-point win. They continue to be amazing fro the field, they’re stepping up from three, and they’re great on the boards.

Colorado is dangerous, but it’s erratic.

It can get hot, but it’s not strong enough on a regular basis from three, there are way too many turnovers, and the D doesn’t force enough mistakes to slow down the Arizona attack. But …

Why Colorado Will Win

The Buffaloes are sneaky-dangerous.

They might not be consistent from three, but they’re making what they’re taking – they’ve won their last six games when they hit more than 40% from three.

Arizona has the defense to clamp down from the outside, but if Colorado can be decent from three, and if the rebounding isn’t all that off – with better than -5 – there’s a chance that …

What’s Going To Happen

Can Colorado really be good enough at home to pull this off?

It’ll be strong enough to keep it interesting for a while, but Arizona is too strong on the boards and will be too good at guarding the three.

Yeah, Colorado wins when it hits 40% or better from three.

Arizona hasn’t let anyone get to 40% from outside since January 25th.

East Region

Final Score: No.1 Dayton 96, No. 8 Colorado 89

Cleveland, OH–The arena was full in Cleveland on Sunday afternoon as Dayton Flyers fans packed in tight. It took more than regulation in this one for the Flyers to advance on, it also took a double-double from star big man Obi Toppin with 26 points and 12 rounds.

Colorado attempted the upset but might have ultimately been doomed from beyond the arc, finishing just 6-23 on the night from deep. Mckinley Wright IV led his team for the second straight game with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

The No. 1 seed Flyers advance on with a tough test ahead in the Auburn Tigers and maybe one of their bigger obstacles of the season in a team with athleticism and size like nothing you can compare to in the Atlantic-10.

Final Score: No. 5 Auburn 85, No.4 Wisconsin 65

Sacramento, CA–The goal hasn’t changed for the Tigers and unfortunately for the Wisconsin Badgers they were just another roadblock for Auburn en route to the Sweet Sixteen.

Bruce Pearl’s squad looked focused and shut down the Badger’s second-half offensive efforts, outscoring Wisconsin 41-25 after half time. Kobe King was the only Badger to reach double-digit scoring, ending the night with just 13 points.

While the Tigers were led by freshman Isaac Okoro with 19 points, 5 rebounds and clutch performance from the field, going 8-11 on the night. They advance on to face the No. 1 seed in the region in Dayton and have to keep focus to continue on to the Elite Eight and beyond.

Final Score: No. 3 Duke 77, No. 6 Iowa 66

Greensboro, NC–It was a duel effort by Tre Jones and Cassius Stanley who led Duke with 14 points a piece. But they weren’t alone as three other Blue Devil’s finished the night with double-digits in their eleven point win over the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Iowa big man Luka Garza gave it his all as he led the way with 15 points and 13 rebounds. But it wasn’t enough as the Hawkeyes couldn’t hold off a late second half surge by the Blue Devils to seal the win and send Fran McCaffery’s group home early. They continue on to face this corner of the bracket’s Cinderella, a No. 10 seed who might not fit the mold but don’t let them fool you as they already have two upsets in the bag with room for much more.

Final Score: No. 10 Arizona State 88, No. 2 Villanova 86

Albany, NY–The Sun Devils are on a roll! As they pack their bags and head to New York City with a two-point victory over two-time tournament Champion Villanova and head coach Jay Wright.

Arizona State couldn’t miss as they went a combined 50.8% from the field and ended the night with six different Sun Devil’s in double figures. It was floor general Remy Martin who led the way with 17 points, 8 assists and three steals. Villanova did all they could and were led by Saddiq Bey with 24 points but this is the Sun Devil’s weekend as they aren’t leaving the east coast just yet.

The Colorado State Rams host the Colorado Buffaloes in the basketball edition of the Rocky Mountain Showdown. The Rams are having their White Out game and will be wearing throwback uniforms.

The Rams are looking to build off of the momentum of a last second win over South Dakota State, while the Buffs are looking to stop a two game losing streak. CU lost to #2 Kansas and Northern Iowa this past week.

Three things the Rams need to do to get a win over the Buffs are contain Tyler Bey, keep up the defensive intensity, and get the seniors going. If the Rams can accomplish these things, they have a chance to send CU back to Boulder with a third loss.

Tyler Bey is the Buffaloes all around player. He leads the Buffs in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks. Bey is also second on the team in assists. The Rams will need to be careful with Bey, as he is very efficient from the field (averages close to 50%) and he gets to the line a lot.

The Rams tend to get lackadaisical on defense, especially in transition. This has cost them wins and has come close to costing them wins. The Rams also need to communicate on defense. Sometimes this young team has a tendency to follow the ball to closely and they forget about the man they are supposed to guard. This upperclassman led Buffs squad will pick this young Rams squad apart if they aren’t careful.

The senior Rams on this team need to calm down a little. They look like antsy freshman out there at times. Nico Carvacho, Hyron Edwards, and Kris Martin are a big part of this squad, but they need to slow it down sometimes and try not to force things. The Rams play best when these guys are all on the same frequency.

There is no question that this Rams team is a young team. They look like that at times, but they also look like a team that has the ability to play with anyone in the country. The Rams will surprise some people this season and this looks to be an opportunity for them to do just that.

CSU 72-65 Colorado
