Redshirt freshman corner Collin Gill enters the transfer portal

Redshirt freshman corner Collin Gill enters the transfer portal in hopes of finding playing time elsewhere.

The room holding defensive backs in the Oregon Ducks football room is quite full and oozing with talent.

That room got a little lighter.

Redshirt freshman corner Collin Gill, out of the Class of 2023, has decided to leave Eugene in hopes for more playing time elsewhere.

The consensus three-star prospect was rated a top-10 player in Washington D.C. and was the No. 5 recruit in D.C. according to 247Sports and Rivals. Gill was also rated as the sixth-overall prospect in D.C. in the 247Sports composite and the eighth-ranked by ESPN. He was ranked as a top-two player at his position in Washington D.C.

Gill never played in a game at Oregon.

Blake Purchase, Collin Gill earn early praise from Dan Lanning in fall camp

One of the most common refrains from coaches and players in college football is that when a high school prospect finally arrives on campus and joins the team, you can throw the recruiting stars out the window. What you did at the previous level might have helped you get to where you are, but they don’t mean anything going forward.

Some players leave high school with all of the accolades and hype, while others weren’t recruited as prominently, but still find a spot on prominent teams. How successful they are at the next level is up to them.

No two players better depict that journey on Oregon’s roster this fall than true freshmen Blake Purchase and Collin Gill. While both had different recruiting processes in high school, the pair have earned some high praise so far during fall camp.

On one hand, Purchase was rated as the No. 1 player in the state of Colorado coming out of high school, and the No. 17 EDGE in the nation (No. 183 overall). Head coach Dan Lanning has been impressed with how quickly he’s been able to get up to speed in Eugene since coming to town this summer.

“On the first day it’s like he’s trying to figure out where to line up, but when you when you let that guy go, he just got explosive power,” Lanning said. “He’s got quickness and he’s got a want to be better. And it’s certainly showing up on the field.”

On the other hand, Gill was the 77th-rated CB in the 2023 class, and the No. 1,264 player overall. Despite the low ratings as a recruit, he’s had a big impact so far with the Ducks.

“He had a couple of interceptions on Saturday, which is pretty impressive for him,” Lanning said. “Still, at times he’s got to figure out where he’s supposed to line up but he’s the guy that’s a willing tackler, willing to hit and he’s done a good job when the ball has been thrown his way.”

We will see if either player gets much time on the field this fall, but the reviews so far are glowing for a pair of true freshman who took different paths to Oregon.

SIGNED: 3-star defensive back Collin Gill is officially a Duck

3-star defensive back Collin Gill officially signed on to be an Oregon Duck Wednesday morning.

Defensive back Collin Gill is just another example of how this coaching staff under Dan Lanning is recruiting the entire country in order to find talent.

Gill is from the Washington D.C./Maryland area and when he verbally committed to the Ducks this past summer, he said the style of defense Oregon plays was really the determining factor.

He was recruited by most of the schools back east such as Boston College and Appalachian State. Ole Miss and Washington State made a late push for Gill, but he stuck with his commitment to go to Eugene. Gill will join a fairly crowded, young, but very talented secondary room at Oregon.

Breaking: Ducks land commitment from 3-star CB Collin Gill

Another player added to the 2023 class for the Ducks! 3-star cornerback Collin Gill announced his commitment to Oregon.

On back-to-back days, the Oregon Ducks landed significant commitments to bolster their secondary in the coming years.

On Thursday afternoon, 3-star cornerback Collin Gill, from St. John’s, Washington D.C., announced his commitment to the Ducks, joining the 2023 class.

The addition of Gill comes a day after 4-star safety Tyler Turner committed to the Ducks on Wednesday afternoon.

According to 247Sports, Gill is ranked as the No. 104 cornerback and No. 1194 overall player in the 2023 class. He will join a growing secondary at Oregon in the 2023 class that already includes Turner, 4-star CB Cole Martin, 4-star S Kodi DeCambra,

With back-to-back massive recruiting weekends in Eugene, it’s no surprise that we’ve seen commitments start to trickle in. As we continue forward, expect many more to come.
