CollegeWire writers make their Week 3 Pac-12 selections

CollegeWire’s Pac-12 writers send in their picks for a seemingly easy week for the Conference of Champions.

Week 3 of the Pac-12 season won’t go down in the history books as a week to be remembered. Odds are we’ll forget about this week shortly after it’s over. There aren’t any big matchups to speak of and everyone is going to be waiting impatiently for a Week 4 that promises to be a great one as the conference season gets underway.

But we still have to get through what could be considered Cupcake Week for the Conference of Champions. Before the season, the Washington at Michigan State game looked like it could be the contest most people will be watching, but after the off-the-field shenanigans that have been going on in East Lansing, the Huskies should roll the Spartans.

Even lowly Stanford is expected to win over Sacramento State. It could be the last chance the Cardinal have to be victorious. Here are the CollegeWire picks according to the Pac-12 scribes.

College 12-Pack podcast explores San Diego State and the Big Ten

At @College_Wire, the College 12-Pack with @PatrickConnCFB and @TylerNettuno explores topics of interest to #USC fans.

USC is leaving for the Big Ten next year. This obviously means that the Big Ten is now a much bigger topic of interest to Trojan fans. Yet, while the Men of Troy are leaving the Pac-12, it’s still very interesting to see what will happen to the Pac in the near future. Will San Diego State join? People want to know, within and beyond the walls of the USC campus. It’s all very intriguing.

The College Wire’s new show is here to unpack these topics. The College 12-Pack podcast, co-hosted by Patrick Conn and Tyler Nettuno, dives into the San Diego State realignment drama and the world of Big Ten football. It’s a combination of topics USC fans should find highly interesting. If you’re not that familiar with the Big Ten Conference but want to get up to speed, this show with Patrick and Tyler is just for you.

There’s also a discussion of the Northwestern football situation. We offered one national writer’s list of coaching candidates for the now-open position.

NFL Mock Draft: Baby Gronk to New England?

Would the Patriots let him wear No. 87?

Could the man-child nicknamed “Baby Gronk” soon be headed to play for the team Rob Gronkowski played the majority of his future hall of fame career with?  Before setting nearly every tight end record at Notre Dame, [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag] wasted no time making an impact as a true freshman in 2020.  At some point in his first collegiate season fans started calling him “Baby Gronk” as Mayer sported the No. 87 jersey.

Fast forward roughly 27 months and Mayer has declared for the NFL draft. To me there is no question he’s not only the best tight end in the draft, but was the best tight end in college football both of the last two seasons, regardless of who the Mackey Award went to.

Patrick Conn of College Wire put together his latest 2023 NFL mock draft that’s worth checking out.  In it he has Mayer going just before the halfway point of the first round – to the New England Patriots at 14.

With a nickname like “Baby Gronk,” it would be fitting to have him suit up for the Patriots. Mayer would give Mac Jones a big target up the seams and in the red zone.

I think most draft forecasters and experts would be pretty surprised if Mayer’s name isn’t called on the first night.  It is worth noting however that Conn didn’t include Isaiah Foskey in his first round after a so-so week from the edge defender at the Senior Bowl.

Picking the Pac – CollegeWire staff makes their Week 8 selections

A few upsets damaged some of the CollegeWire staff’s overall record, but we forge on with our Week 8 picks for the Pac-12.

Ouch.

For the first time this season, upsets took a sledgehammer to the College Wire staff picks. No one saw Stanford going into South Bend and defeating Notre Dame and after a slow start, Buffs Wire’s own Tony Cosolo has become Nostradamus by picking Colorado to win for the first time in 2022.

As for the rest of us, it was a dumpster fire. Only two staff members managed a winning record last week. With a small, but explosive week in the Pac-12 with UCLA going to Oregon, the standings are sure to shift once again.

Name Last Week’s Record Overall Record
Jack Carlough (Buffaloes Wire) 3-2 46-10
Tony Cosolo (Buffaloes Wire) 3-2 44-12
Zac Neel (Ducks Wire) 2-3 44-12
Don Smalley (Ducks Wire) 2-3 44-12
Patrick Conn (College Wire) 1-4 43-13
Matt Zemek (Trojans Wire) 2-3 43-13
Don James (Trojans Wire) 1-4 42-14
Andy Patton (Ducks Wire) 1-4 41-15
Matt Wadleigh (Trojans Wire) 2-3 40-16

College Wire network predicts Week 2’s SEC matchups

Who will come out on top in Week 2’s slate of matchups?

Well, would you look at that? We’re already 1/12 of the way through the college football regular season.

Week 1 is now in the books, and we were treated to some interesting league matchups. Georgia boat raced Oregon in Atlanta, while Florida scored a home upset against Utah and Arkansas took down a Cincinnati team coming off a College Football Playoff appearance. The Tigers were the only SEC team to lose in Week 1, dropping their opener against Florida State in New Orleans.

In Week 2, we have another interesting slate, headlined by the beginning of league play with Florida hosting Kentucky and Arkansas hosting South Carolina. Alabama and Tennessee face key road trips against Texas and Pittsburgh, respectively, while Vanderbilt has a big opportunity to make a statement with ranked Wake Forest coming to town.

There’s a lot to watch for this week. Here’s how our team of experts on the College Wire network see things shaking out.
