Ex-Notre Dame O-lineman Colin Grunhard compares Irish to Kansas

Will Colin Grunhard experience a turnaround in Lawrence like he did in South Bend?

After four years of mostly sporadic playing time for Notre Dame, offensive  lineman Colin Grunhard chose to move on. He entered the transfer portal and quickly chose to go back home and play at Kansas. Going from a national championship contender to a team that went 0-9 in 2020 can be daunting, even if you’re closer to familiar surroundings. However, Grunhard recently decided to compare his new situation with when he first came to the Irish:

“When I was a freshman at Notre Dame, we were coming off a 4-8 season, one of the worst years in Notre Dame history. The biggest change happens in the weightroom. With [KU strength] coach Ben [Iannacchione], I’ve been experiencing that a lot. We’re working out hard. When we’re running, we’re running hard. Everything matters. The little things matter. If it’s three seconds, you hold it for three seconds.”

Obviously, Grunhard will need a lot more than his own improvement to win with a program that just dismissed Les Miles and has yet to hire his replacement. After all, you can’t just join an offensive line that allowed a nation-worst 47 sacks and 5.22 sacks a game last season and expect a quick fix. The good news for Grunhard is he has two years of eligibility remaining, so he can at least help his new unit make incremental changes. Who knows how much better it will be by the time he’s done playing in Lawrence?

As Mel Tucker said earlier this month, Michigan State football is remaining active in the transfer portal — this time offering defensive back Jason Simmons Jr. of New Mexico State.

Simmons announced the scholarship offer from the Spartans via Twitter on Thursday evening.

Simmons — who is listed at 6-foot and 193 pounds — started as a true freshman for New Mexico State where he recorded 62 total tackles, one forced fumble and three passes defended in 2019. New Mexico State didn’t play this past fall due to COVID-19.

Coming out of high school, Simmons was a three-star recruit and the No. 186 safety prospect in the class of 2019. He is from Lancaster, Texas.

Simmons entered his name into the transfer portal on Monday, and has already received scholarship offers from Western Kentucky and North Texas as well. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Below are highlights of Simmons from his freshman season at New Mexico State:

Mel Tucker: MSU not done in transfer portal, looking to add ‘give or take 9’ more players

Michigan State has already been extremely active in the transfer portal, and they’re apparently not done quite yet.

Michigan State has already been extremely active in the transfer portal, and they’re apparently not done quite yet.

As part of National Signing Day festivities, Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker met with local media members on Wednesday and expressed the Spartans will look to continue to add players to their roster all the way up until fall camp. This could mean through a number of different methods, but mostly through the transfer portal, with a goal of “give or take, nine more players” according to a tweet from Matt Wenzel of MLive.

Michigan State has already added a total of six players through the transfer portal this offseason, with each of those guys expected to contend for immediate playing time.

The Spartans have also lost a number of players via the transfer portal, with  a total of 16 former Spartans leaving the program.

Below is a full breakdown of the incoming and outgoing transfers via our transfer tracker:

Alexander, who is originally from Sandusky, Ohio, appeared in one career game at Michigan State — which was against Western Michigan in 2019. He was a three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 1,396 prospect in the 2018 class.

Anthony Russo is a Spartan, with the graduate transfer quarterback from Temple making it official via Twitter on Saturday.

Russo, who was a three-year starter at Temple, announced earlier this week that he would be continuing his collegiate career at MSU next season. On Saturday, he released a welcome video to express his excitement in becoming a Spartan.

Check out the video below:

Russo will battle it out with redshirt freshman Payton Thorne, junior Theo Day, freshman Noah Kim and incoming freshman Hamp Fay for the starting quarterback spot next season. Russo and Thorne are the two clear favorites for the starting nod heading into spring ball.

Russo, who is listed at 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, was a three-year starter at Temple, appearing in 26 games. He has a completion percentage of 59.6%, 6,287 passing yards, 44 passing touchdowns and 32 interceptions in his career. Russo also has seven career rushing touchdowns.

Most of the attention on Wednesday centered around the early signing period opening for the class of 2021 recruits, but there was another big football-related announcement for Michigan State — a new graduate transfer quarterback.

Anthony Russo, a grad transfer quarterback from Temple, announced on Wednesday that he will be coming to MSU next season. Chris Solari of The Detroit Free Press reported that he has one year of eligibility remaining and will be immediately eligible to play next season.

This past season, Russo started the first three games of the season but then missed the next two because of a shoulder injury and the final two games after being placed on the COVID-19 protocol list.

Russo will join an interesting competition next spring for the starting quarterback position. As of right now, that will include junior Rocky Lombardi, redshirt freshman Payton Thorne, junior Theo Day, freshman Noah Kim and incoming freshman Hamp Fay — who will be enrolling early this spring.

20 Key Instant Impact Transfers: 20 For 2020 College Football Topics, No. 13

20 for 2020 College Football Topics, No. 13: 20 key transfers who should make an instant impact on the 2020 season.

The transfer portal is a huge part of the equation in the new college football football landscape, and it can mean everything if you get the right guy.

No, there doesn’t appear to be a Joe Burrow (Ohio State to LSU), Jalen Hurts (Alabama to Oklahoma) or Justin Fields (Georgia to Ohio State) in this year’s transfer class, but for teams that need to fill a spot right away, or need extra depth, these 20 transfers should make an instant impact.

Does it mean that these 20 are going to be superstars? Hardly.

Most of the time, there’s a reason why these guys are transferring – they’re not as good as the other options on their former teams.

For every Burrow, or Hurts, or Kyler Murray, there’s a Tate Martell or Alex Hornibrook who doesn’t turn into the answer.

There are still plenty of key transfers out there looking for a place to land, and there are several others who’ll be locked into big position battles, but for now, these 20 are eligible right away – add Auburn-to-Kentucky QB Joey Gatewood to this list if all goes well and he’s eligible to go – and should be a big deal.

20. OT Scott Lashley, Alabama to Mississippi State

The Bulldogs don’t have a bad situation at offensive tackle – Greg Eiland and Charles Cross should be fine, and there are enough options to shuffle around the line – but getting a former star recruit with great feet and a 6-7, 307-pound frame for the new offense helps. If he’s able to rise up into a starting role, all of a sudden, the Bulldog starting five that struggled last year should be a plus.

19. WR Velus Jones, USC to Tennessee

Tennessee needs more receiver help with Jauan Jennings and Marquez Callaway gone. Josh Palmer is back after finishing second on the team with 34 catches, and Brandon Johnson should be a factor after missing most of last season, but this group needs a star.

The 6-0, 190-pound Jones might not be that, but he’ll bring immediate help. The speedster was a great kick returner for USC and he caught 36 career passes for 347 yards and a score. At the very least, he’ll be a deep threat.

18. OG Ryan Johnson, Tennessee to Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets need more size and more experience up front. The line was a disaster for the nation’s fourth-worst offense last season, and in comes the versatile 6-6, 310-pound veteran who could be the instant leader for the front five.

17. QB Nick Starkel, Arkansas to San Jose State

It’s the last stop on the Nick Starkel World Tour, starting his career as a decent starter at Texas A&M before leaving for Arkansas. He struggled in a disastrous season for the Hogs, and now he’s off to San Jose State to try taking over for Josh Love. Don’t dismiss this just because it’s San Jose State – the passing game finished fourth in the nation.

16. RB Brittain Brown, Duke to UCLA

Someone has to replace the production of heart-and-soul RB Joshua Kelley on the Bruin offense. There are other options – second-leading rusher Demetric Felton is back – but Brown adds a good veteran presence to the mix.

Promising as a freshman, he ran for over 700 yards and seven touchdowns, and he served as a solid kick returner. Hurt at times over the last few years for the Blue Devils, now he should be a key part of the rotation.

Notre Dame the New Home to Transferring Northwestern Captain

Skowronek pulled down 45 receptions as both a sophomore and junior for the Wildcats, finding the end zone eight times those two years.  He was also named to the All-Academic Big Ten Team both years.  He isn’t just a fit because he’s a Midwestern guy from a good school, he’s got extremely big play ability when healthy.

Although not playing on New Years Day 2020, Notre Dame still receieved good news Wednesday as Northwestern captain, senior transfer Bennett Skowronek announced he will be enrolling at Notre Dame this spring and using his final year of eligibility there in the fall.

Skowronek, a 6-4, 215 pound receiver is coming off a senior season at Northwestern that saw the captain play just three games before suffering an ankle injury that sidelined him the remainder of the season.

Notre Dame is banking on Skowronek’s ankle being fully healed, something Matt Fortuna from The Athletic says those in South Bend are confident in.

Skowronek’s injury happening in just the third game of the 2019 season makes him eligible for 2020 despite having played in four separate seasons already at Northwestern.

That play sealed the deal for Northwestern’s only Big Ten West title in school history but he was also responsible for over 1200 yards of offense for a pretty pedestrian offensive unit.
