Tulsa vs Tulane Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

The Golden Hurricane showed against Cincinnati just how good they really are.

They might be in the midst of a losing season, but they’ve been able to battle hard in way too many close games. Yeah, winning the tight ones is part of the deal, but four of the six losses were by a touchdown or less.

Cincinnati is supposedly a College Football Playoff-level team, and the Tulsa running game ripped through it for close to 300 yards.

The combination of Shamari Brooks and Anthony Watkins was fantastic against the Bearcats, QB Davis Brin got the team into a position to potentially pull off the shocker, and the O is there to bother a leaky Tulane defense that …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Tulane Will Win

The D stepped it up over the last few weeks.

A major problem over the first half of the season – Ole Miss, East Carolina, and SMU combined for close to 2,000 yards of offense – the Green Wave D was solid against the run against Cincinnati and UCF, keeping both games close. UC pulled away late, but that was a fight in a 31-12 loss.

The offense might be struggling, but that’s partly because QB Michael Pratt has been hurting – he missed the Cincinnati game and was just okay against UCF. As long as the offense can be just a wee bit balanced, and if it can avoid giving the ball away …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Turnovers are a major problem for both teams.

Tulane has turned it over ten times in the last five games and Tulane killed itself with four giveaways against Cincinnati. They’ll both make mistakes, they’re both having a rough time getting their respective seasons going, and …

Tulsa, for all of its problems, will pull this off, beat Temple next week, and at the very least will go into the SMU game with a shot at getting bowl eligible. The running game will take over against the Golden Hurricane.

Clemson vs UConn Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

It’s not like the Clemson offense is working now that it scored 30 points in back-to-back games.

First, as too many people in the investment world painfully know, the O didn’t get the Tigers up to 30 against Florida State, and there were only 345 yards of total offense against Louisville last week.
UConn isn’t going to score a ton on this Clemson defense, but it hasn’t been bad against the run and it’s been able to hang around here and there throughout the year.

And for what it’s worth, there’s a rest factor. The Huskies haven’t played in almost three weeks, all while Clemson is looking at this as a scrimmage before dealing with Wake Forest. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Clemson Will Win

For all of Clemson’s problems, a ten-win season is still in the picture. Beating Wake Forest next week would be huge, taking down South Carolina on the road would be massive, and there’s going to be a bowl game.

To do that, the offense still needs a whole lot of work, and that’s what UConn is for. This isn’t going to be a game the Tigers are going to take lightly.

This is the game to get the passing attack going. It’s been brutally inconsistent without enough of a downfield presence, the this is why you pay a team like this to come to your house. You try cranking it up a bit to get ready for the two big games that do matter.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Jim Mora Jr. isn’t able to do anything with UConn quite yet.

Yeah, Clemson has finally been able to get to 30 points against an FBS team and did it in back-to-back weeks.

UConn would kill to get there – it hasn’t scored more than 28.

Purdue beat the Huskies 49-0, but Vanderbilt had to fight to get out with a 30-28 win. Clemson’s performance will be somewhere in between.

There won’t be any danger, but this isn’t going to be totally smooth. The O will open it up enough to put this away fast, and the D won’t allow much of anything outside of a random score.

Syracuse vs Louisville Game Preview

Why Syracuse Will Win

Can Louisville handle the rushing attack that’s about to blast away for a full four quarters? It’s questionable.

This isn’t the Louisville defense of the last few years. It started out with a rough run having to deal with Ole Miss, Wake Forest, and a healthy UCF, but the run defense has been terrific over the last month against a slew of brand name teams.

However, Virginia, Boston College, NC State, and Clemson don’t run like Syracuse does.

Yeah, Michigan State’s Kenneth Walker has been all but handed the Doak Walker as the nation’s best running back, but Sean Tucker is right there, QB Garrett Shrader has transformed the team with his power style, and the Orange are now third in the nation in rushing. They’re good for 200 yards on the ground in this no matter what, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Louisville Will Win

Again, the Cardinals are playing well and the defense has stepped it up in a big way. They’re not winning, but they’re holding up against the run.

Syracuse might be running and rumbling, but it’s not converting on third downs and it’s having a rough time converting all of the production into points. The Orange haven’t hit 30 points in the last three games, and it might have to if the Cardinal. O gets going.

Can the passing game take over? It’s possible to thrown the Orange defense, but it hasn’t faced a whole lot of teams that can do it – Wake Forest and Liberty were able to get going through the air.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

It’s one of those Moment of Truth games for both teams.

Syracuse has five wins, but it closes out at NC State and against Pitt – getting that sixth to go bowling isn’t going to be easy.

Louisville has four wins. It should be able to win at Duke, but closing out at Kentucky is a lot to ask for if a bowl game is on the line.

Both teams are playing relatively well, but Louisville is having a hard time coming up with the big drive at the right time to pull games out. Syracuse is taking over with that ground attack.

Miami vs Florida State Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

Tyler Van Dyke has turned around the season.

Miami has a whole slew of issues overall, and it’s not like losing D’Eriq King to injury was any sort of a positive, but Van Dyke has been able to mature into the starting quarterback job and the program has taken an upturn with three straight wins.

Now the team that couldn’t win the close games is winning all of them.

Van Dyke settled in after a rocky start, hitting close to 75% of his throws over the last three games with well over 1,100 yards and ten touchdowns and no picks. Best of all, he seems to have given the team confidence to pull out games in close moments.

On the other side, the Miami run defense has been solid – only allowing more than 135 yards on the ground once in the last six games.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Florida State Will Win

Can the Noles get their rushing groove back?

They rumbled over Syracuse, North Carolina, and UMass and looked like they were about to turn the season around and get into the mix for a bowl game, but the O fell flat in losses to Clemson and NC State.

However, the defense hasn’t been all that bad against the decent passing teams – there were problems against NC State’s Devin Leary last week, but it’s been okay over the last several weeks – but it’s the offense that has to take over.

FSU might not run for 250 yards, but as long as it’s effective at ripping off yards in chunks, and if it can control the clock just a wee bit – Miami doesn’t do anything with the time of possession battle – that might be enough to survive.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

For people of a certain age, Miami vs Florida State is still magical.

For a while in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and then again in the early 2000s, this matchup stopped the sports world. When it was on, this was the most intense rivalry – at least on the field – in all of sports.

This won’t be that, but it’s still a big deal to get this game.

It would be a huge moment for Florida State and the Mike Norvell era, and it would mean bowl eligibility for Miami.

Van Dyke and the passing game will get past a rocky first half to pull away in the third. The Miami D might not take the ball away enough, but it’ll slow down the Seminole ground attack.

Boston College vs Georgia Tech Game Preview

Why Boston College Will Win

It’s not like Phil Jurkovec came back bombing away, but he’s the difference-making quarterback missing over a rough back half of the season.

Injured over a month ago, he returned for the Virginia Tech game in a 17-3 win. He wasn’t great – Pat Garwo and the running game took over – but it was a desperately needed victory.

It wasn’t just the absence of Jurkovec that was the problem. It was the schedule with three road games in four against Clemson, Louisville, and Syracuse to go along with a home date against NC State. Now the slate eases back up.

Georgia Tech’s offense hasn’t been anything amazing. It’s last in the ACC in third down conversions, hasn’t hit 200 yards in either rushing or passing in each of the last two games, and the Boston College defense has been fantastic at getting off the field with third down stops.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The Boston College offense still can’t get the passing game going.

Jurkovec might be easing his way back into things, and he got the win, but the O still only threw for 112 yards against Virginia Tech and the offense hasn’t thrown for more than 200 yards in six of the last seven games.

This isn’t a BC team that’s going to come out and score 60 points. It’s going to be a relatively low-scoring, measured game that will be about who makes the bigger mistakes and who takes advantage of the bigger moments.

Can Georgia Tech somehow get up early at home? Even a 10-0 lead would change everything against an Eagle offense that hasn’t scored more than 17 points since September.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Boston College doesn’t generate much of a pass rush and doesn’t do anything to get into the backfield. Georgia Tech doesn’t generate much of a pass rush and doesn’t do anything to get into the backfield.

Boston College doesn’t do much to crank up the offense, Georgia Tech has given up a bazillion yards over the last several games. Georgia Tech is struggling on offense, but Boston College is having issues against the run.

It’s Boston College’s fourth road game in the last six and sixth road trip in the last nine. It’s all going to take its toll as Georgia Tech finally gets back on the right side of a close, tough game.

Duke vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The offense is still okay.

It might have problems scoring, but the O is moving just enough to at least get to more than 300 yards per game without too much of a problem. In this, it’s all about cranking things up against a Virginia Tech team that’s having big-time issues all the way around.

The Hokies have lost four of their last five games thanks to a painfully inconsistent offense, an absent passing game, and without enough timely plays from the defense to make up for the other problems.

However, if you think the Virginia Tech defense has been a tad off …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Virginia Will Win

Duke’s defense has completely fallen off the map.

It struggled throughout the first part of the year, but the offense was able to make up for it with a whole lot of pop from the running game. And then came the teams that could throw.

Granted, everyone’s having problems with Wake Forest, Pitt, and Virginia, but all three took target practice against the Blue Devils, combining for well over 1,800 yards in the last three games.

Virginia Tech might be coming off a miserable 17-3 loss to Boston College, and the passing attack hasn’t hit 200 yards in four of the last five games, but the running game has shown enough to work from time to time.

This is the game for the O to have some fun.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

The Hokies have improved their defense just a bit over the last few games, and that shouldn’t be the issue this week.

Can they finally show some offensive pop? Duke has the worst defense in the ACC, and the offense has scored seven points or fewer in three of the last five games.

If you’re getting shut out by Virginia and only come up with seven against Wake Forest and North Carolina, things aren’t going all that well. The Virginia Tech defense will take over.

Notre Dame vs Virginia Game Preview

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Who wants to have some fun?

The Notre Dame offense has been able to move the ball steadily and well through the air – hitting 200 yards or more in every game – and the ground attack has been along for the ride at times with a few big plays here and there.

Welcome to the Virginia defense.

The Cavaliers have had a few weeks off, and they needed it after allowing 734 yards to BYU, 570 to Georgia Tech, and getting rocked for 466 yards per game overall.

The Notre Dame offensive line has been a work in progress all year, but it’s playing a wee bit better. Pass protection has been an issue, but there’s no problem this week against a relatively absent Virginia defensive front.

Crank up a balanced offense, rely on a defense that can make big things happen behind the line, and get out with a big statistical performance.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Virginia Will Win

Notre Dame was able to get into a shootout with North Carolina and be just fine, but Virginia’s offense has the ability to take things up to a whole other level.

Yeah, the Cavalier defense has taken the year off, but QB Brennan Armstrong and the offense lead the nation averaging 545 yards per game.

Yeah, the Irish defense has been terrific against the run for most of the year, and yeah, this group is great at taking the ball away, but North Carolina was able to roll up 565 yards, USC was able to throw well, and now it gets a team with two weeks off to gear it all back up.

For all of Virginia’s faults, it was on a four-game winning streak before going to BYU. Something was working right, and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like a movie trailer …

If you liked the Notre Dame game with North Carolina, you’re going to LOVE this.

The Irish defense is just good enough to come up with a few key takeaways and a necessary stop to survive, but this Virginia offense is going to be relentless.

It’s not going be what Notre Dame wants to do, but it’ll get out of its comfort zone for the second time in a few weeks and get into a back-and-forth fight.

NC State vs Wake Forest Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

It’s not about stopping Wake Forest. It’s about being able to come up with enough key stops to let your own offense take over.

North Carolina was able to do that late in the 58-55 win over the Demon Deacons, and now the ACC’s best scoring defense and second-best D overall should be able to hold up just enough.

Again, Wake Forest is going to get its yards and points, but the Wolfpack are amazing at coming up with third down stops and bring the best run defense in the ACC.

Lost in all of the high-powered fun from the Demon Deacons is how they can hit 200 yards on the ground if needed. That’s not happening against NC State.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Yeah, the NC State defense is terrific, but it’s about to deal with a Wake Forest offense that puts up 600 yards getting off the bus.

Granted, it ripped up Duke, Army, and an inconsistent North Carolina defense over the last few weeks, but QB Sam Hartman is in total control of the attack, the big plays are there from the veteran receiving corps, and it’s all going against a defense that hasn’t seen anything like this.

Mississippi State doesn’t crank it up deep like Wake Forest does, but it was able to beat the Pack earlier in the year with the controlled passing game. Louisville was balanced with over 200 yards both rushing and passing – even in a loss to NC State – and now Wake Forest should be able to move the offense on a D that allowed over 400 yards in three of its last five games.

But …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

NC State has a passing game, too.

It might not be quite as fun and thrilling as the Demon Deacon attack, but the Pack have hit 300 yards through the air over each of the last three games and it’ll do that this week, too.

Every Wake Forest game is wild and crazy, but NC State will be able to hold up just enough defensively to allow red-hot QB Devin Leary and the offensive side take over to make the ACC Atlantic race really, really interesting.

The two will be tied up top record-wise after this with the Wolfpack in control of its ACC destiny.

North Carolina vs Pitt Game Preview

Why North Carolina Will Win

After dealing with Wake Forest, North Carolina is more than ready to get into a high-powered shootout with a whole lot of big plays, a whole lot of offense, and with a statement to be made as it tries to make a push in the ACC title chase.

The Tar Heels already beat Miami and Virginia, but it’s still a game back of both of them in the standings and two back of Pitt. Unfortunately, the win over the Demon Deacons last week didn’t count as an ACC game – don’t ask.

Forget about defense in this. North Carolina has the offensive balance, the NFL quarterback in Sam Howell, and the explosion to hang step-for-step with the Pitt passing game.

How did Miami get by the Panthers two weeks ago? QB Tyler Van Dyke went off.

Clemson DJ Uiagalelei has struggled, Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker didn’t play the whole game, and that’s been about it for the strong passers, at least anyone near Howell’s level.

The North Carolina O has hit well over 500 yards for the second game in a row and four fourth time all year, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Pitt Will Win

Pitt’s pass rush is about to eat.

The North Carolina offense might be fantastic, and Howell is a big play baller who can drive the throws down the field and keep the team in the game no matter what, but he’s about to get bounced around all night.

The Tar Heel offensive line can run block, but it’s giving up sacks in bunches. Pitt is among the best defenses in the nation at generating pressure, and that might be just enough to hold serve.

Kenny Pickett continues to be phenomenal with 29 touchdown passes, two or  more in eery game, over nine yards per throw, and with over 1,200 yards over the last three games.

The North Carolina defense has allowed over 1,500 yards of total offense in the last three games, so …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Most of the NFL world will be focusing on Baltimore and Miami, but the NFL scouting types will be locked in this with a whole lot of talent on both sides and two franchise quarterbacks.

And they won’t disappoint.

This might not be the 114-110 game everyone is hoping it could be with Pitt coming in with the No. 1 scoring offense in America and North Carolina just giving up 58 yards, but this should be a whole lot of fun.

Pitt’s defense will come up with the sacks and big plays that North Carolina’s won’t over the last ten minutes.

Stanford vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

There’s nowhere to go but up for an offense that hit the skids over the last few games.

The passing attack is bad, the running game worse, and offensive production has dropped in each of the last four games after shocking Oregon.

So where’s the positive?

Oregon State’s pass rush isn’t anything special, the secondary gives up too many yards, and its offense isn’t quite as strong as it needs to be. And then there’s the other side of the ball.

If you’re giving over 500 yards to Cal and 37 points to Colorado, there’s an issue. The Oregon State defense is struggling at just the wrong time, but …

Why Oregon State Will Win

441 yards. That’s how many rushing yards Utah just blasted away for in an ugly 52-7 win over Stanford.

The week before that, Washington ran for 229 yards, and that’s all a part of a rough run of allowing 200 rushing yards or more in every game but the win over USC and the loss to Washington State, who doesn’t really run because it’s too busy throwing.

Oregon State’s defense might be struggling, but the downfield passing game is good and the running game has been great. The Beavers lead the Pac-12 in rushing offense, and they’re about to tear off well over 200 yards before they get off the bus.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Stanford pull a big win out of nowhere?

It pushed Washington State and Washington in losses, and there’s still that win over Oregon to kick back and enjoy.

The Utah loss was a major, potential program-changing disaster.

Oregon State will keep the misery going with a massive day from the running attack, but Stanford’s passing game will do just enough to keep up. It won’t be a brutal blowout, but it’ll be a fifth straight loss for the Cardinal.
