USC vs Arizona State Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

The passing game continues to be terrific.

The late part of the win over Arizona might have been a tad too scary, but the offense rolled through the air again, making it over 1,000 yards over the last three games.

The big difference this season over 2020? The ground attack is better, too, getting to 200 yards in two of the last four games for the No. 1 offense in the Pac-12.

ASU’s pass defense hasn’t been amazing. It’s not bad, but it’s allowing over 230 yards per game in each of the last four with way too many big plays.

It might have been a rocky run, and the Pac-12 title might be all but out of the picture, but it’s a team that can play relatively loose considering the pressure is all on the Arizona State side.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Arizona State Will Win

Does USC come across as an ultra-focused 60-minute team to you?

It wasn’t anything great against Notre Dame, it got rolled by Utah, and is did almost everything possible to allow Arizona to make last week’s game interesting.

Yeah, it’s throwing well, but there are way too many penalties, the secondary hasn’t been great, and Arizona State should be able to take advantage of all of it.

The offense hasn’t been all that bad over the last two games – losses to Utah and Washington State – but the five turnovers against Wazzu were a killer. USC will take the ball away here and there, but lately, not enough to make a big difference.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

This should be … interesting.

Before the season, this seemed like it would be the battle for the Pac-12 South in one of the biggest national games of Week 10, and now it’s just to see who wants to keep the South title hopes alive all while needing Utah to crash.

USC just doesn’t have it.

It’s got the parts, and the passing game is good enough to keep pushing, but Arizona State will get past its case of the fumbles from last week against Washington State to methodically pull away in the second half for a desperately needed win.

Clemson vs Louisville Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

Clemson might not have an offense, it’s defense isn’t quite so dominant, there was a historic double-digit loss to Pitt a few weeks ago, and …

Shhhhhhhhhh, Clemson is still in the ACC title hunt.

It needs to win out, NC State has to lose again, and Wake Forest has to come up with a loss along the way – and also has to lose to the Tigers – but looking ahead at the schedules, it’s still possible.

It might not be pretty, or easy, or efficient, but the team keeps on winning enough to stay alive.

It’s still third in the nation in scoring defense, it’s still generating pressure into the backfield, and the O might have found something last week against Florida State with Will Shipley pounding away for 128 yards and two scores.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Louisville Will Win

The wins might not be coming, but the offense is doing the job.

The opener against Ole Miss is the only time the attack failed to get close to 400 yards, and the team has come close to 1,900 total yards over the last four games.

The passing game has been fine, the rushing attack has been fantastic, and it’s all coming from an offensive line that’s holding up well.

The defensive side might not be playing as well, but now it gets that Clemson offense that’s not able to pull away from anyone.

The game will never get out of hand, and the Cardinals have the pop to be in control for long stretches.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

You know how this works with Clemson.

The offense will be painful for stretches, the defenses will keep this close and do its job, and slowly and surely, there’s a break that turns out to be just enough to get ahead.

Clemson is among the best in the country in red zone defense, and Louisville is among the worst. Clemson will close out its chances with scores, and Louisville won’t.

NC State vs Florida State Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

Even with a tough loss at Miami a few weeks ago, NC State is still in the ACC title hunt with a big showdown this week and the big battle with Wake Forest coming up.

The defense got back on track with a terrific performance against Louisville, the passing game is getting even stronger, and now the Wolfpack gets a Florida State team that’s still struggling a bit on the offensive line and doesn’t have enough of a passing attack to worry about.

NC State has this as long as it doesn’t royally screw up – it hasn’t turned the ball over in the last four games.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Florida State Will Win

It’s all about the ground attack.

Florida State has a nice all-around offensive balance, but when it runs well it wins. When it runs sort of well, it loses.

It took Notre Dame to overtime after tearing off 265 yards, and since then it’s 3-0 when getting to 230 yards or more and 0-3 when it doesn’t.

At home, the defense that’s been quietly okay all year – not amazing by Florida State standards, but decent – should be good against the NC State running game, but it’s about the other side because …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Stop the run, stop Florida State.

NC State’s defensive front should get into the backfield and should hold up well. It gave up over 200 rushing yards for the first time last week against Louisville and still won easily. This won’t be so simple on the road.

FSU will make this interesting – not last 60 seconds of last week against Clemson interesting, but it’s not going to get blown out – but the Wolfpack won’t make the big mistakes and they won’t give up the massive rushing yards.

Miami vs Georgia Tech Game Preview

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The offense has been great.

It might have taken a while to shift away from the triple-option, but a few years later, it’s now consistently balanced, the running game still works, and the there are real, live, 300-yard passing games.

The Yellow Jackets threw for 300 in the shootout loss to Virginia and the wild loss to Pitt. The previous 300-yard passing game before October of 2021? September 1, 2011 vs. Western Carolina.

Miami’s defense has been torched all year. For all the Turnover Chain stuff and all of the plays in the backfield, the Canes were hit for over 800 passing yards in the last two games.

They’re the worst in the ACC in time of possession, turnover margin, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Miami Will Win

The program has its quarterback.

Tyler Van Dyke has been terrific in place of D’Eriq King, throwing for over 200 yards in each of his five starts – improving his numbers in each of the last four games.

He might not have outgained Kenny Pickett last week, but he hit the deep shots and threw for 426 yards and three scores in the win over Pitt, and that’s coming off a massive performance in the win over NC State.

Georgia Tech’s offense might be better and more diverse, but it’s not moving the chains enough to overcome a spotty defense that’s giving up close to 270 passing yards per game.

Van Dyke should have a nice day.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It’s do-or-die time for both teams in their hopes of going bowling.

It would still take a miracle for Georgia Tech to get to a bowl game even with a win – it has to win three of its last four games and still has Notre Dame and Georgia to deal with – so forget about it with a loss.

Miami is playing too well offensively, but the Yellow Jackets will get enough yards and big plays to keep this close.

Finally, though, the Hurricanes have figured out how to win close games.

Pitt vs Duke Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

The Pitt offense continues to be incredible.

It might have come up short against Miami last week, but Kenny Pickett raised his NFL stock even more by throwing for over 500 yards, the O showed balance against Virginia Tech a few weeks ago, and Duke can’t stop any of it.

On a four-game losing streak, the Blue Devils haven’t been remotely close defensively, allowing close to 2,100 yards in the four ACC games.

The pass defense is the worst in the ACC allowing 260 yards or more against everyone this season but North Carolina A&T.

As you’re reading this, Pickett already has 200 passing yards.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Duke Will Win

So what is Duke doing right?

The passing game should work. There’s a good ground attack when the offense doesn’t have to start throwing to keep up, and that’s going to be the case here, too.

How did Pitt lose to Miami? Hurricane QB Tyler Van Dyke went off for 426 passing yards with big play after big play. Gunnar Holmberg hasn’t been accurate enough lately, but he was great throughout the first part of the season, is connecting on close to 70% of his tries, and he’s got the big play arm to push the Pitt secondary from the start.

This has to be a fight-fire-with-fire thing.

And …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Pitt doesn’t turn the ball over, but when it does, there’s a problem.

The two given away to UMass didn’t matter, but the three against Western Michigan led to a loss, and the two last week against Miami mattered. The Panthers turned it over just once in the other five games.

Duke has to be at least a +2 in turnover margin, but it only did that once this year and it still almost lost to Northwestern.

Pitt will get back on track.

Wake Forest vs North Carolina Game Preview

Why Wake Forest Will Win

Wake Forest is better than you think.

500 yards and 44 points per game, among the best in the nation in turnover margin, total offense, third down conversions, scoring, downfield passing, pass rush …

If its name was Clemson, or North Carolina, or Miami, or Florida State, it would probably be No. 2 in the first round of College Football Playoff rankings instead of ninth.

There were fights against Louisville and Syracuse, and the defense has been a tad soft, but the offense has been devastatingly consistent – 35 points or more in every game – and it should keep on bombing away.

But it’s the other side that might get this done.

Again, the D hasn’t been that great, but the pass rush has been terrific. Now it gets to go against a leaky North Carolina offensive front that gets Sam Howell popped way too often.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Tar Heels have the explosion to do more than keep up.

Wake Forest really is good, but where’s the real win?

Florida State? Virginia? Louisville? Army? There are a slew of nice wins, but nothing amazing so far. Talent-wise, North Carolina is the best team the Demon Deacons have faced.

But now the real North Carolina has to show up.

The running game has been fantastic lately. Howell is Howell and the O would love to crank up the passing attack whenever possible, but the ground attack that came up with 220 yards or more in each of the last three games should go off.

Granted, dealing with Army and Syracuse along the way will skew the stats, but Wake Forest’s run defense has been hit for 160 rushing yards or more in the the last four games after no one got to the mark in the first four.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

The North Carolina offense will do more than keep up.

It’ll be balanced, Howell will be fantastic, and the team has been able to follow up losses with wins at every point this year so far. But will the Tar Heels blow up like they did against Virginia, or will the the defense fail like it did against Florida State and Georgia Tech?

Here comes the Wake Forest running game.

It’s been able to get to 200 yards three times in the last six games – North Carolina is 0-3 when allowing 200 yards or more.

The Demon Deacon offense will come through with great balance in a wild and fun shootout.

Virginia Tech vs Boston College Game Preview

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Boston College has fallen off the map thanks to an offense that’s struggling to find something that consistently works.

It doesn’t help that the schedule got tougher and most of the games were on the road, but the Eagles aren’t moving the chains with fewer than 300 yards of total offense in each of the last three games.

The running ma has stalled, the passing attack hasn’t hit 200 yards in any of the last three games, and the team has scored a grand total of 40 points – 14 or fewer in every game – during the run.

Virginia Tech’s running game is coming off its two best performances of the year.  It has to keep pounding away on a mediocre BC run defense.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Boston College Will Win

It’s not like Virginia Tech is on fire lately, either.

It stopped the slide with a win over Georgia Tech last week, but it was on a three game losing streak before that with too much inconsistency and with the defense struggling to regain its early season form.

The offense isn’t able to overcome the defense with it’s not playing well. Virginia Tech is 4-0 when allowing fewer than 27 points and 0-4 when allowing more. Worst of all, the rough run came at home – the Hokies are playing just their third road game of the year.

On the flip side, Boston College is finally at home after playing three of its last four games – and five of the last seven – on the road.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Boston College gets a Virginia Tech offense that should be just what’s needed to pull up out of the nosedive, but there are too many problems, not enough production from the running game, and with the passing game too inefficient to go off.

The Hokie defense is a bit better than it showed over the last few weeks. Even on the road, it’ll play just well enough to overcome yet another mediocre day from the other side.

Be shocked if there are fireworks in this.

Texas vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

If ever a program desperately needed an inspirational performance, this is it.

Texas was on its way to the Big 12 Championship, the College Football Playoff, and maybe even bigger things after the first quarter in Dallas against Oklahoma.

The team was ripping off yards in chunks, the Steve Sarkisian offense was on fire, and then …

Three straight losses later, and 4-4 Texas is just trying to get to a tasteful bowl game.

The O still has enough talent to hang with just about anyone, Iowa State’s great D is coming off an awful performance in a loss to West Virginia, and now it’s time to start bombing away.

The Cyclone defense has been among the best in the Big 12, but it’s been spotty over the last few weeks in the secondary. It was hardly a big issue, and then Mountaineer QB Jarret Doege threw for 370 yards.

Texas has to find that passing game groove again, because …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Iowa State Will Win

Yeah, the Texas offense has a slew of wonderful parts, but it’s like an ensemble cast movie full of high-end actors that don’t quite mesh.

The passing attack has been brutally inconsistent, the rushing attack hasn’t hit 200 yards since the first week of October, and it’s all struggling just as the run defense has gone bye-bye.

It hasn’t been a total disaster, but it can’t seem to come up with any meaningful stops lately. It’s allowed 220 rushing yards or more in each of the last three games, and the team is now 0-4 when allowing at least that many. It’s 4-0 when it doesn’t.

Breece Hall and company were stuffed by Oklahoma State two weeks ago, and followed it up with 239 yards on the ground against West Virginia. The Cyclones have hit the 200-yard mark in four of the last five games, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

They’re about to do it here, too.

No, really, what’s the problem with Texas? It’s not that hard …

Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor. Texas can’t beat the good teams, it got past the four mediocre ones on the slate, and now it has to deal with another good team.

Worst of all for the Longhorns, it’s getting an outstanding Iowa State defense coming off a miserable performance against West Virginia.

It’s going to come out roaring, the Cyclone ground game will be great, and hopes of getting back to the Big 12 Championship will be back on after going off the tracks last week.

Baylor vs TCU Game Preview

Why Baylor Will Win

Anything interesting happening with the TCU football program?

Gary Patterson is done after a legendary head coaching career, but there’s a reason – the team has totally collapsed.

The Horned Frogs lost five of their last six games, the defense is a total mess, and the offense hasn’t been able to bail the team out of the problems.

The O has occasionally play well enough to win with, but there are too many turnovers, the defense isn’t generating anything in the backfield, and the secondary is getting lit up like a Christmas tree.

Meanwhile, Baylor is getting tremendous play from its lines, the passing attack is working, and overall it’s playing like a team destined to end up in the Big 12 championship after beating Iowa State, West Virginia, BYU, and Texas.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why TCU Will Win

Can Baylor get it done on the road?

It’s not like it’s making a cross country trek to Fort Worth, but this is just the fourth road game of the year – two were layups, and the other was the lone loss to Oklahoma State.

Yeah, the end of the Patterson era is rough, but Jerry Kill is a terrific head coach who just so happened to be a top assistant – he’s the interim head man.

No, the defense isn’t doing a whole bunch, but the passing game has been okay, the ground game destroyed Texas Tech, and there are just enough decent parts in place to rise up in what should be a shootout.

As good as the Baylor defense is, it’ll give up passing yards.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

TCU is going to make this more of a fight than Baylor might like.

There’s going to be the Change In Program inspiration factor, there’s the rivalry side of things, and there’s one other part of this …

TCU really should be better than this, but it isn’t playing like it.

It’ll keep up the pace, but Baylor is finding ways to lock down against the run, and its offense will rip through the porous Horned Frog D in the second half.

Oklahoma State vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The defense is the truth.

For years, Oklahoma State’s brand was almost all about the offense with a fun style and a ton of explosion. This one is more about keeping everyone in check – it has yet to allow more than 24 points – and grinding things out.

And it’s working.

It’s almost like the program is looking for more control in a college football world gone offensively mad.

The Cowboys are fantastic against the run, they’re a wall on third downs, and they bring more than enough pressure to be a constant problem in the backfield.

The ground game isn’t going to find a groove against this defensive bunch, and …

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Mountaineers do a better job of controlling games than Oklahoma State does.

The Cowboys can rely on their defense, but that goes hand-in-hand with an offense that doesn’t take a whole ton of big chances. The big pass plays are there, but this isn’t an Oklahoma State O that’s going to throw 500 yards and 55 points on the board against anyone but Kansas.

West Virginia can play a little D, too. It’s great at getting into the backfield – Oklahoma State has issues allowing tackles for loss – and it’s also great at coming up with third down stops. It’s not as good as the Cowboys are, but they’re strong.

No, there isn’t going to be enough of a running game to matter here, but the Mountaineers are winging it. Jarret Doege is on a nice roll, beating Iowa State with 370 yards and three scores and doing a better job of making things happen down the field.

What’s Going To Happen

Can West Virginia really keep this push going?

It was dead and done after three straight Big 12 losses, and then it whacked around TCU and went off on an Iowa State with a defense that’s every bit as strong as Oklahoma State’s.

The Cowboys gave up more than 300 passing yards once so far – the loss to Iowa State – and that’s what it’s going to take to pull this off.

It’s the third road game in four weeks for the program, West Virginia is at home for the second straight week, and …

Again, it’s about control. Oklahoma State wants to do it with its defense, but West Virginia leads the Big 12 in time of possession for a reason.

This is a going to be a blast.

The Mountaineers pull it out on a walk-off field goal.
