Dabo Swinney on why Clemson is a College Football Playoff team for the 12-team format

Swinney on Clemson as a playoff contender.

Clemson football showed its grit in a hard-fought 24-20 win over Pitt on Saturday, overcoming a mountain of injuries to stay in the fight for a strong finish to the season.

The Tigers, ranked No. 20, came into the game missing five offensive linemen and lost another, Elyjah Thurmon, on the first play. They were also without linebacker Wade Woodaz and lost Sammy Brown to a targeting ejection in the first half. Despite everything, they rallied to pull off the comeback.

“We’re 8-2 with just one loss in the ACC,” head coach Dabo Swinney said after the game. “We’ve had to overcome so much—four starting offensive linemen out, no Wade, no Sammy—and still, guys are stepping up all over the place.” Swinney pointed to the team’s unbeaten road record this year, something Clemson has only accomplished ten times in its long history.

Swinney is confident that his team is built for the spotlight and has the talent to compete if they get a shot at the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. “Winning is hard,” he said. “We’ve beaten every team that beat us last year except Duke, who we didn’t play. Cade [Klubnik] is right there statistically with Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. Our young skills are improving weekly, and the defense is playing its best football.”

Still, Clemson’s path to the playoffs is narrow. They need to win out, claim the ACC title, and hope for some chaos elsewhere. “We’re in the fight, and that’s all you can ask for,” Swinney said. “We need some help, but we just have to handle our business and finish 10-2.”

Next up, the Tigers host The Citadel, looking to secure their 14th straight season with at least nine wins—a feat only Alabama has matched. But for this team, that’s not the ultimate goal. “This team believes,” Swinney said. “They’ve proven they can compete on the big stage. If they want a shot, they’ll need to finish strong.”

New CFP projections could have Ohio State-Oregon rematch in semifinals

If you trust Bleacher Report to make predictions, then fans may get a CFP semifinal matchup with Ohio State battling Oregon.

Unfortunately, if Ohio State doesn’t win the Big Ten Championship Game, it won’t be getting a coveted first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.

With Northwestern on the road then Indiana and Michigan at home to finish the season, the Buckeyes will be highly expected to take on the Oregon Ducks in a rematch of the lone Ohio State loss this season.

That might not be their only battle though.

According to a CFP projection from Bleacher Report’s Joe Tansey, the two opponents could meet in the semifinal, obviously should both win their quarterfinal games and Ohio State win its first-round battle.

In these rankings, Ohio State will base Boise State and then, if it wins, face BYU before a potential rematch with Oregon. For Oregon, it would have to beat the winner of Tennessee and Indiana.

Now, with three weeks and conference championship games still on the horizon, these are destined to change at least a bit from the final AP product.

However, if you’re the Buckeyes, one should be wetting their beak at the chance to take on and potentially eliminate the Ducks, who took them down in Eugene earlier in the season.

Ohio State football topped Georgia, and the CFP chair explains why

The Ohio State Buckeyes and Georgia Bulldogs both have one loss, but the Buckeyes came out on top. Here’s why.

The Ohio State Buckeyes beat the then-undefeated Penn State Nittany Lions Saturday.

While the game ended 20-13, it didn’t feel that close as the Nittany Lions totaled just six points offensively with that lone touchdown coming on the defensive side as Will Howard threw a pick-six in the first quarter.

Nonetheless, the Buckeyes rebounded and came out on top in front of a record crowd at Beaver Stadium. Just a few days later, they were placed No. 2 by the College Football Playoffs Committee.

CFP chair Warde Manuel, who also serves as the Michigan AD, talked about why the Buckeyes were ranked over the Georgia Bulldogs, who had been No. 2 in a plethora of other polls.

Here’s his explanation.

“Well, both are solid teams, as you know. Ohio State’s one loss on the road was against the No. 1 team, and they lost by one. They had an impressive win this past weekend at Penn State, and they have been very consistent. Top-5 defense. They have had changes on the offensive line but still performed, as you know, and Will Howard and Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson, those three have really moved the offense. So for us, it was the consistency. Georgia, very good team, great win against Texas, a win over Clemson. Consistency in terms of their offense. They’ve had some inconsistencies there, but they have great defense, and they’re allowing only 17 points per game,” Manuel said via Letterman Row.

Here’s a full picture of the ranking.

While these rankings favor the Buckeyes, there is still a month of football left prior to any postseason play.

Ohio State will have a home battle against the Purdue Boilermakers, a side that has yet to win a conference game this season, this weekend. It has Northwestern, Indiana and Michigan in the following games to wrap up the season.

How would Ohio State football matchup in hypothetical battle with Boise State

The Ohio State Buckeyes could draw Boise State if all things stayed the same in a few months. How might they fair in the battle?

The Buckeyes are on a crash course for the Big Ten Championship Game.

While a rematch with Oregon and ultimately staking their claim as Big Ten Champions feels ideal, the College Football Committee can’t back that into their predictions, and the Ducks are the top team in the country and one of the lone undefeated teams left.

That means the Buckeyes, despite being a top-four team in the nation, still won’t have a first-round bye. In the latest CFP rankings, which can be seen below, that means Ohio State would take on Boise State.

When talking about the Broncos, one must mention running back Ashton Jeanty, who has 1,525 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns, solidifying his name in the Heisman conversation.

However, the Buckeyes sit 10th in the nation in opponents yards per rush attempt, so they shouldn’t be too discouraged by that as Ohio State has one of the best run defenses in the country.

In fact, it should be the opposite. Boise State has given up 45 to Georgia Souther, 37 to Oregon, 30 to Utah State and 24 in back-to-back weeks against San Diego State and UNLV. That’s going to signal opportunity for the Buckeyes offense to find some ground.

That said, the Buckeyes should matchup well, as they can limit what Boise State does best while ideally being able to march down the field on a defense that hasn’t been succeeded at a high level this season.

CFP rankings release show: Where to watch, live stream for Texas A&M football

Where will Texas A&M rank in the first official College Football Playoff reveal?

Texas A&M’s (7-2, 5-1 SEC) 2024 season hit a bump in the road amid the Aggies improbable seven-game winning streak, running into the buzzsaw inside a backs Williams-Brice Stadium, as South Carolina dismantled the Aggies 44-20 behind a 24-0 second half run by the Gamecocks.

Despite the loss, the Aggies are still tied for first in the SEC standings, with the Georiga Bulldogs at 5-1 heading into the second bye week of the season. While A&M’s chances to make the 12-team College Football Playoff remain intact, Tuesday’s first official rankings reveal will paint a clearer picture.

However, Monday’s news that star running back Le’Veon Moss will miss the rest of the season placed a hole in A&M’s offense as the junior leads the Aggies with 765 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns through nine games.

With Moss shelved, junior back Amari Daniels steps in as the lead back, while senior EJ Smith will now have an even more significant role in the backfield.

Pair of Big 12 teams in latest CFP projection, BYU not among them

Despite perfect record, BYU not among CFP projections.

The Big 12’s college football regular season is roughly halfway through with each team having played four conference matchups. With five conference games left on each team’s remaining slate, there is still plenty to be determined with the Iowa State Cyclones and BYU Cougars leading the way. Iowa State is the highest-ranked team in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll checking in at No. 10 overall, BYU is on their heels at No. 12.

Beyond the top two teams in the conference, it is crowded at the top with six teams separated by just a game. One of those teams is the Colorado Buffaloes, who just keep winning football games in an impressive turnaround from Year 1 of the Deion Sanders era. The start of the season was a bit rough but Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter have this team humming along. This week the Buffs take on Cincinnati at home.

Before we dive into Week 9 action, Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports released his weekly bowl projections. There are two teams from the conference projected to make the College Football Playoffs and one of them is not BYU.

College Football Playoff Projections

Chris Day/The Commercial Appeal / USA TODAY NETWORK

Despite a close call the last time out against the UCF Knights, who have been hot and cold, the Iowa State Cyclones are very much in the thick of the CFP chase. They land at No. 11 overall in Smith’s projections and would face the Oregon Ducks in Eugene in the opening round. That is a tough matchup but perhaps they beat the Ducks in a bowl game again, just as they did in the 2020-21 Playstation Fiesta Bowl?

As for the second team in the projections who hails from the Big 12 we have the Kansas State Wildcats. It might surprise some to see BYU get overlooked but the Wildcats are a proven commodity. They get the nod and based on the projection are viewed as the favorite to win the conference. The only argument and a valid one is BYU’s 38-9 win over Kansas State in Provo, Utah, on Sept. 21.

  • Iowa State vs Oregon (Campus site CFP first-round matchup)
  • Kansas State vs Texas (Fiesta Bowl, CFP quarterfinal matchup)

Big 12 Bowl Projections

Of the 16 teams in the conference, 11 are going bowling according to the latest projections.

  • Oklahoma State vs Maryland (Guaranteed Rate Bowl)
  • Cincinnati vs Vanderbilt (Liberty Bowl)
  • Utah vs Missouri (Las Vegas Bowl)
  • Colorado vs Duke (Holiday Bowl)
  • Texas Tech vs Pittsburgh (Pop-Tarts Bowl)
  • BYU vs Washington State (Alamo Bowl)
  • Arizona State vs Tulane (Independence Bowl)
  • TCU vs South Carolina (Texas Bowl)
  • West Virginia vs Marshall (First Responders Bowl)

Who gets left out of the postseason

Rob Gray-Imagn Images

The teams that are left out of the postseason projection all share an identical 1-3 conference record. The only team with one conference win that is projected to make the postseason is the Utah Utes, who are currently 4-3 overall. The Oklahoma State Cowboys are the only team in the Big 12 with a conference win at 0-4, were included in the postseason bowl projections. That’s a bold move Cotton, let’s see if it works out for them.

  • Houston (2-5, 1-3)
  • Baylor (3-4, 1-3)
  • Kansas (2-5, 1-3)
  • UCF (3-4, 1-3)
  • Arizona (3-4, 1-3)

Who is leading in the Power Four conference title pictures after Week 8

Who has the best path to a conference title in 2024? Check out how the title pictures look in the Power Four.

It is time to separate the contenders from the pretenders. Teams that were in the top 10 in preseason are still hanging around for the most part except for teams like the Florida State Seminoles, who are sitting at 1-6 with five games left on the schedule. Likewise the defending champion Michigan Wolverines were viewed as a preseason contender and after Saturday’s loss are very much out of the Big Ten title picture.

There are roughly 23 teams that are vying for their respective conference title, more could still be in the picture if chaos ensues over the next six weeks. For now the focus will be on these teams.

Here is how the title pictures are shaping up in each of the Power Four conferences after Week 8:

ACC Title Picture

Ken Ruinard-Imagn Images

It’s just the Clemson Tigers’ world and we are all just living in it. After watching the Florida State Seminoles take over the ACC last season, the Tigers have reclaimed the throne this season so to speak. The Miami Hurricanes will clearly have something to say about who wins it all, but all signs point to a Clemson-Miami showdown in Charlotte, North Carolina. However, don’t forget about the SMU Mustangs and Pitt Panthers, who are still very much in this race.

ACC Picture:

Team ACC Record Overall Record
Clemson 5-0 6-1
Miami (FL) 3-0 7-0
SMU 3-0 6-1
Pittsburgh 2-0 6-0

Big 12 Title Picture

Rob Gray-Imagn Images

Despite both of the remaining undefeated teams in the Big 12 facing scares in Week 8, BYU and Iowa State remain at the top of the pecking order. Given that they won’t face each other in the regular season the Cougars and Cyclones could be on a collision course in Arlington, Texas, for the Big 12 championship. The only problem is that there are four more teams only one game out. Of the four chasing only Texas Tech lost in Week 8. This race could be a tight one down the stretch.

Big 12 Picture:

Team Big 12 Record Overall Record
BYU 4-0 7-0
Iowa State 4-0 7-0
Kansas State 3-1 6-1
Texas Tech 3-1 5-2
Cincinnati 3-1 5-2
Colorado 3-1 5-2

Big Ten Title Picture

Marc Lebryk-Imagn Images

Please stand up if you had both the Oregon Ducks and Indiana Hoosiers at the top two in the new-look Big Ten. That is exactly what we have at the moment and potentially that could be the title game matchup. Especially since neither team faces each other in the regular season. Behind the top teams we still have the Penn State Nittany Lions, Illinois Fighting Illini, Wisconsin Badgers, and Ohio State Buckeyes lurking behind them.

Big Ten Picture:

Team Big Ten Record Overall Record
Indiana 4-0 7-0
Oregon 4-0 7-0
Penn State 3-0 6-0
Illinois 3-1 6-1
Wisconsin 3-1 5-2
Ohio State 2-1 5-1

SEC Title Picture

Brett Patzke-Imagn Images

The Georgia Bulldogs had the biggest win of the week but it is the Texas A&M Aggies and LSU Tigers who are at the top of the standings, for now. LSU and Texas A&M will face off at Kyle Field in Week 9 to determine the top spot in the SEC. Much like the Big 12 and Big Ten, the SEC is quite crowded at the top with three others joining Georgia, LSU, and Texas A&M at the top. The most unlikely contender is Vanderbilt at 2-1 in the conference with wins over Alabama and Kentucky. They now face Texas in Week 9.

SEC Picture:

Team SEC Record Overall Record
Texas A&M 4-0 6-1
LSU 3-0 6-1
Georgia 4-1 6-1
Tennessee 3-1 6-1
Missouri 2-1 6-1
Texas 2-1 6-1
Vanderbilt 2-1 5-2

There is still plenty of action to unfold as we march to the first-ever 12-team playoff field.

Pat’s POV: Projecting the 12-team CFP field halfway through the season

Which 12 teams would make the playoff if they started today? CSW tries to answer that question.

We have reached the halfway point of the 2024 college football season and we are that much closer to the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. The contenders and pretenders are starting to separate from the pack with some dark horse teams picking up steam.

There is just one undefeated team left in the SEC and they can solidify themselves as top dog this coming weekend. The Texas Longhorns improved to 6-0 after vanquishing their bitter rivals the Oklahoma Sooners 34-3 at the Cotton Bowl. Now it’s all about the Georgia Bulldogs in a top-five showdown in Austin, Texas.

In the Big Ten, the Oregon Ducks and Penn State Nittany Lions kept pace in close victories. The Ducks went back and forth with the Ohio State Buckeyes while the Nittany Lions needed a second-half comeback against the USC Trojans. Two teams in the top three could be on a collision course in the Big Ten title game, however, Penn State has to knock off Ohio State to get there.

The remaining conferences in the Power Four have multiple teams vying for a spot in the top four. The Clemson Tigers are the clear top team in the ACC once again with five straight wins and a perfect 4-0 record in conference play. The Miami Hurricanes are poised to make a run at the Tigers while a pair of surprises are also in the hunt at 2-0. Keep your eyes on the Pittsburgh Panthers and SMU Mustangs. There isn’t a lot of separation but these are the teams that have the best chance.

The Big 12 might have the biggest surprises with the BYU Cougars, Iowa State Cyclones, and Texas Tech Red Raiders all perfect in conference play. Each team is 3-0 through seven weeks of football. Arizona State, Kansas State, Colorado, Cincinnati, and West Virginia are all in the running at 2-1.

With that being said, here is how we view the 12-team College Football Playoff through the first half of the season.

Top Four Seeds

  • No. 1: Texas Longhorns
  • No. 2:  Oregon Ducks
  • No. 3: Clemson Tigers
  • No. 4: BYU Cougars

If the playoffs started today, these are the likely top-four teams. It will likely change in the coming weeks.

No. 5: Georgia Bulldogs vs No. 12: Boise State Broncos

This would be a tough draw in the first round for Boise State but watching running back Ashton Jeanty against the Georgia defense would be worth the price of admission. The winner would move on to play the BYU Cougars.

No. 6: Penn State Nittany Lions vs No. 11: Iowa State Cyclones

Despite Penn State being undefeated, we have the Ducks just ahead of them based on who they beat this past Saturday. This would be a strong matchup between a tough Cyclones defense against Drew Allar and the Penn State offense. The winner would move on to play the Clemson Tigers.

No. 7: Ohio State Buckeyes vs No. 10: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Ohio State becomes the third Big Ten team in the annual playoff with a showdown against the Fighting Irish, who they played last season. It was a tightly contested game but this year the Irish might have quite the time trying to slow down freshman sensation Jeremiah Smith. Which transfer quarterback would have the better game between Riley Leonard and Will Howard? The winner would move on to play the Oregon Ducks.

No. 8: LSU Tigers vs No. 9: Miami Hurricanes

The LSU Tigers jumped into the conversation after defeating the Ole Miss Rebels in overtime, handing them their second loss in SEC play. Despite the Miami Hurricanes having a spotless record, they have looked anything but impressive since the beginning of ACC play. The Canes can make a statement in Week 8 when they travel to Louisville.

Just Missed The Cut

The Alabama Crimson Tide sit in the top 10 of the coaches poll but after knocking off Georgia they have lost to Vanderbilt and struggled to put away South Carolina. On Saturday they face a Tennessee Vols team that finds themselves in the same predicament. They barely beat Florida this past Saturday after losing to Arkansas the prior weekend. Third Saturday should answer questions about both of these teams.

Trio of Big Ten teams in latest College Football Playoff projections

Big Ten bowl projections have three teams in the College Football Playoffs, and 12 total teams in bowl games.

In the latest College Football Playoffs projections from USA TODAY, Erick Smith and Paul Myerberg get the chance to wrong a right after pairing two Big Ten teams against each other last week.

They also make a change at the top of the bracket with the Alabama Crimson Tide taking the spot held by the Georgia Bulldogs after their loss at Bama.

Another team entered the top seeds following the Utah Utes loss to Big 12 opponent Arizona. The Kansas State Wildcats replace them, for now, although the Big 12 has plenty of competition at the top including BYU, Iowa State, and even Coach Prime’s Colorado Buffaloes.

The Miami Hurricanes from the ACC and Ohio State Buckeyes out of the Big Ten round out the projected conference champs, while Barry Odom’s UNLV Rebels secure the Group of Five bid after blasting Fresno State without starting quarterback Matthew Sluka.

Here is a look at how all the bowl projections play out for Big Ten programs ahead of Week 6:

Three Big Ten teams in CFP

The No. 6 Oregon Ducks and No. 8 Penn State Nittany Lions join No. 2 Ohio State in the College Football Playoffs projections. CFP rankings are separate from the Coaches and AP polls.

Oregon and Penn St. each move up one spot from last week, while OSU stays at two.

It’s good to see none drop out, with the Nittany Lions the closest to upset watch against Illinois. They dusted them and were rewarded. The Illini loss gave other Big Ten teams an opportunity to knock on the CFP door.

Michigan, Indiana on CFP radar

The one-loss Wolverines and undefeated Hoosiers got ink time. Michigan was more in passing as Myerberg gave four teams to watch the last of his digital ink.

In case you didn’t know, Indiana is 5-0 for the first time since 1967.

Robert Goddin-Imagn Images

Big Ten bowl projections at a glance

Three teams are accounted for thanks to the College Football Playoffs. The first official week of Big Ten play jumbled the conference standings, but did it throw their bowl projections out of whack?

  • Duke’s Mayo – Iowa Hawkeyes vs. NC State Wolfpack
  • First Responder – Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. West Virginia Mountaineers
  • Citrus – Michigan Wolverines vs. Ole Miss Rebels
  • Sun – Washington Huskies (Pac-12 rep) vs. Pitt Panthers
  • ReliaQuest – Illinois Fightin’ Illini vs. Missouri Tigers
  • Music City – Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Oklahoma Sooners
  • Alamo – USC Trojans (Pac-12 rep) vs. BYU Cougars
  • Pinstripe – Indiana Hoosiers vs. Syracuse Orange
  • Detroit – Wisconsin Badgers vs. Toledo Rockets

The 12 Big Ten teams projected is down one from last week’s projection. Michigan State fell from bowl season, and no new Big Ten team replaced them.

This week looks better than last, but that’s just me. What do you think?

Big Ten outlook remains bright in College Football Playoff picture

Which Big Ten teams are currently projected in the new 12-team College Football Playoff?

Two things were true heading into this season: the College Football Playoff was going to add more interest with the new 12-team format, and Big Ten football was going to be well represented.

According to this week’s USA Today CFP bracketology piece, those thoughts remain true. 9 of 18 teams in the Big Ten are undefeated, including 5 teams that are 3-0. Oddly enough, the top two Big Ten teams in USA Today’s most recent College Football Playoff bracketology haven’t played thrice yet.

Let’s look at the programs that made the cut this week, and a few knocking on the CFP door.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Week 4 CFP Prediction: #2 seed, Big Ten conference winner

The Buckeyes are listed as the top team from the Big Ten with a first round bye (the bottom eight teams play in the first round). No qualms there, even as they sit third in both major polls.

The top four seeds being conference winners is probably right, even if the fourth seed ends up being worse than seeds as low as eight.

Penn State Nittany Lions

Week 4 CFP Prediction: #6 seed, At Large bid

Penn State sitting ahead of USC is a surprise considering talent faced. What the Nittany Lions have over the Trojans is a higher seed to being the 2024 season.

As of today, USC should be ahead of of Penn State. Even a pummeling of Kent State Week 4 would not be enough to keep PSU ahead, short of USC losing at Michigan this weekend.

Oregon Ducks

Week 4 CFP Prediction: #9 seed, At Large bid

Speaking of teams that have an argument to be ahead of Penn State, Oregon’s blasting of Oregon State ended an odd streak of questionable performances.

The Ducks are on a bye this week, so a drop in next week’s bracketology would not be unsuspected.

USC Trojans

Week 4 CFP Prediction: First Four out

It’s difficult to have qualms with USC on the outside looking in, especially with Missouri and Mississippi in the same boat.

The Group of Five will get at least one program in the 12-team field, leaving USC out for now. The Trojans could change that with a statement win over the Wolverines Week 4.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

Week 4 CFP Prediction: Team to watch

If the Cornhuskers sweep Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers, and Indiana prior to their matchup against Ohio State, and Nebraska will be firmly in the hunt for a CFP berth.
