Where Texas, others land in preseason USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Texas is voted No. 12 in the first Coaches Poll of the year.

The Texas Longhorns are starting about where they should in the first USA TODAY Coaches Poll of the 2023 season. The team moves into the No. 12 slot to start the year.

The ranking seems reasonable considering what the team returns. Based on the roster, if Texas had a track record of proven on-field play they would probably rank higher. The most logical designation would put the Longhorns around the No. 11 or 12 spot.

Other notable rankings included several scheduled opponents for the team. The list of Coaches Poll ranked foes includes No. 3 Alabama, No. 16 TCU, No. 17 Kansas State, No. 19 Oklahoma and No. 24 Texas Tech.

The above rankings show greater respect for the Big 12 than in recent seasons. With Texas, the league has four Top 20 teams with Texas Tech not far behind.

It’s that time college football fans! The 2021 season is just a few weeks away and preseason polls are here. The USA TODAY recently released its Coaches Poll,  powered by USA TODAY Sports, and here is how things stack up.

The top five:

  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Oklahoma
  4. Ohio State
  5. Georgia

Defending national champion Alabama received 63 out of 65 first-place votes with Oklahoma garnering the other two votes.

The USA TODAY Sports AFCA football coaches poll uses a panel of 65 head coaches at Football Bowl Subdivision schools. Each coach submits a top-25 list with a first-place vote worth 25 points and second place 24, continuing to one point for 25th.

Alabama garnered 1,621 points, Clemson 1,508, Oklahoma 1,481, Ohio State 1,435 and Georgia received 1,386 points.

Amway Preseason Coaches Poll Released: Where’s Georgia ?

Where does Georgia football rank in the preseason Amway USA TODAY Coaches Poll?

Coming off a 2019 that saw Georgia come so close to reaching the College Football Playoff, the Bulldogs will look to make another run for glory in 2020.

Things will look awfully different this year due to massive scheduling modifications as a result of COVID-19.

However, there’s still football to be played, and the Dawgs will start the season ranked No. 4 in the  Amway Preseason Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports.

That ranking places Georgia second in the conference, behind Alabama which ranks No. 3 in the nation.

The full top-ten is as follows:

  1. Clemson
  2. Ohio State
  3. Alabama
  4. Georgia
  5. LSU
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Penn State
  8. Florida
  9. Oregon
  10. Notre Dame

Other SEC teams in the rankings include Auburn (11) and Texas A&M (13).

If Georgia – which should be favored in every game minus a visit to Alabama – takes care of business, then UGA should close out the season in its backyard of Atlanta.

The Dawgs return a lot of talent in 2020, mostly on a defense that ranked No. 1 in the nation last season.

On offense, Georgia lost a ton of production, including its starting quarterback, its top two running backs, four starting offensive linemen and a star wide receiver.

By looking at the losses lost from last season’s offense, it’s difficult to picture the Dawgs making another big run, but it’s important to remember that Kirby Smart has secured three consecutive top-ranked recruiting classes. In addition to the loads of talent waiting on the depth chart, Georgia was also able to land Heisman hopeful quarterback Jamie Newman in a transfer from Wake Forest.

If Georgia is going to have another memorable season, it will need these new offensive faces to be capable of moving the ball more than James Coley’s offense was able to in 2019.

The addition of Todd Monken, who I’d say was Georgia’s biggest acquisition this offseason, should make that possible.

With a ferocious defense and revamped offense, let’s see what these Dawgs can do.

Amway Coaches Poll released after Week 13: Where’s Georgia football?

Where is Georgia football in the newest Amway Coaches Poll?

Week 13 has come to an end and we are moving closer to conference championship weekend and the College Football Playoff.

Georgia, which was No. 4 last week, took care of business (for the most part) in a win over Texas A&M and remained at No. 4.

The biggest win of the weekend came from Ohio State, which took down Penn State in Columbus.

LSU looked good against a terrible Arkansas team, but did allow the Razorbacks, who have the 106th ranked offense, to score 20 points.

The biggest loss of the weekend was from Oregon, which now has two losses. The Ducks fell from No. 6 to No. 13.

Georgia now has wins over four teams that were ranked at the time of the game.

The Dawgs beat Auburn, Florida, Notre Dame and A&M (the Aggies were ranked No. 24 last week).

Where’s Georgia football in the Amway Coaches Poll?

Following Saturday’s action, the Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY Sports, has been revealed for Week 13.

Georgia may have had college football’s most impressive win of the weekend, beating No. 12 Auburn on the road. If you’ve watched Auburn this season, you’d know they were the best No. 12 in a long time.

Last week, Georgia was at No. 5 in the Coaches Poll, one spot behind Alabama.

However, after Georgia’s win and Alabama’s loss of Tua Tagovailoa, the coaches moved Georgia up to No. 4, where it also sits in the College Football Playoff rankings.

The highest ranked team to lose was No. 7 Minnesota, which fell to Iowa and dropped to 11.

No. 10 Baylor was handed its first loss of the season via an epic comeback from Jalen Hurts and Oklahoma. The Bears fell to No. 13.

No. 11 Penn State survived a scare from Indiana but held on to win by a touchdown.
