Commanders’ Week 11 inactives vs. Texans

A look at the Commanders’ Week 11 inactive list.

The Washington Commanders released their inactive list ahead of Sunday’s Week 11 game against the Houston Texans. Linebacker Cole Holcomb will miss his fourth consecutive game with a foot injury.

A total of four players are on Washington’s inactive list, including Holcomb’s backup, David Mayo, for a third consecutive game. Mayo is dealing with a hamstring injury.

Here is the complete list.

  • LB Cole Holcomb
  • LB David Mayo
  • G Chris Paul
  • CB Rachad Wildgoose

Wildgoose played well at slot corner a few weeks ago but struggled in the Week 8 win over the Colts. Since then, coaches have moved starting free safety Bobby McCain to the slot, with Darrick Forrest and Kam Curl at safety.

Running back J.D. McKissic was moved to injured reserve on Saturday. Jonathan Williams is active behind Antonio Gibson and Brian Robinson Jr. in Week 11.

Commanders vs. Texans: Final injury report for Week 11

Holcomb and McKissic are out, as is rookie Armani Rogers. The Texans are without rookie corner Derek Stingley, which could mean a big day for Terry McLaurin.

The final injury report is out for Week 11, and the Washington Commanders will be without starting linebacker Cole Holcomb for a fourth consecutive game. Holcomb, who is dealing with a foot injury.

Earlier this week, head coach Ron Rivera sounded like Holcomb was getting closer to a return but that it wouldn’t come this week.

Also out is running back J.D. McKissic. McKissic continues to deal with a neck injury, and it wouldn’t be surprising if he landed on the reserve injured list. This is the third straight game that McKissic will miss.

Tight end Armani Rogers will miss Sunday’s game with what is labeled as foot and ankle injuries. Rogers was limited on Wednesday and Thursday but did not practice Friday, and he was ruled out. Rivera said Rogers was injured in the Monday night game against the Eagles.

Fellow rookie tight end Cole Turner will be Washington’s third tight end Sunday.

The Houston Texans ruled out rookie cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. for Sunday’s game. The No. 3 overall pick will miss his first NFL game, which could mean an even bigger day for Washington wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

Commanders vs. Texans: Thursday injury report for Week 11

Cole Holcomb and J.D. McKissic were out again for the Commanders on Thursday.

The Washington Commanders had their first full day of practice this week on Thursday in preparation for the Houston Texans. The Commanders, coming off a big Monday night win over the Eagles, had a walkthrough on Wednesday.

Washington’s injury report looked much the same Thursday with linebacker Cole Holcomb [foot] and running back J.D. McKissic [neck] remaining sidelined. Head coach Ron Rivera sounded like Holcomb was closer to a return but didn’t specify a timeline.

There appears to be no new news regarding McKissic.

The following players were limited on Thursday:

  • Center Tyler Larsen [back]
  • LB David Mayo [hamstring]
  • TE Armani Rogers [knee]
  • WR Curtis Samuel [shin]
  • TE Logan Thomas [rib]

Running backs Antonio Gibson [knee] and Jonathan Williams [knee] were listed on the injury report but participated fully.

Rookie cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. [hamstring] was the only Texan not to practice Thursday. Wide receiver Brandin Cooks, who missed practice Wednesday, was a full participant on Thursday.

Commanders vs. Texans: Wednesday injury report for Week 11

The first injury report for Week 11 is out, and Cole Holcomb remains sidelined.

The Washington Commanders returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since their thrilling and emotional upset win over the previously unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.

Wednesday’s practice was a walkthrough for the Commanders, who have a short week as they travel to Houston to play the Texans on Sunday afternoon in Week 11 action.

Linebacker Cole Holcomb [foot] and running back J.D. McKissic [neck] were sidelined Wednesday.

Head coach Ron Rivera updated Holcomb’s status after practice:

“He was on the field,” Rivera said. “They had him outside on the grass, running on the grass today. We’ll see how he responds. Because of the short turnaround, today was a walkthrough practice for the most part to try and give our guys a little extra time.”

It sure sounds like Holcomb could miss one more week and return in Week 12 against the Atlanta Falcons.

McKissic has missed the past two games, and there doesn’t appear to be a resolution to his condition anytime soon. Rivera said last week that Washington is being extra cautious with McKissic.

The Commanders had several players who were limited Thursday:

  • C Tyler Larsen [back]
  • LB David Mayo [hamstring]
  • TE Armani Rogers [knee]
  • WR Curtis Samuel [shin]
  • TE Logan Thomas [rib]

Running backs Antonio Gibson [knee] and Jonathan Williams [knee] were listed on the injury report but practiced fully.

The Texans listed several players on their injury report Wednesday.

Commanders promote 2 players to active roster ahead of Monday tilt vs. Eagles

The Commanders added two players from the practice squad ahead of Monday night’s game against the Eagles.

The Washington Commanders have depth concerns at linebacker with starter Cole Holcomb and his top backup, David Mayo, out for the Monday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

At running back, the Commanders are set with Antonio Gibson and Brian Robinson Jr., but third-down back J.D. McKissic will miss his second consecutive game.

As a result, the Commanders elevated a pair of players from the practice squad in veteran linebacker Nathan Gerry and second-year running back Jaret Patterson.

Gerry spent the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Eagles. He signed with the Commanders over the summer but was released with an injury settlement. He re-signed with Washington’s practice squad on Nov. 3.

Patterson spent his entire rookie year on Washington’s active roster last season. He was released during final cuts but quickly re-signed to the practice squad. He rushed for 266 yards and two touchdowns last season.

Washington strangely put running back Jonathan Williams on the inactive list and promoted Patterson. Williams could still be battling a knee injury, but he wasn’t on the injury report.

Commanders inactives for Week 10 vs. Eagles

Cole Holcomb is among Washington’s inactive players for its Monday Night Football game vs. the Eagles.

The Washington Commanders announced their inactive list ahead of the Monday Night Football clash against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Here is Washington’s complete list:

  • No. 23 RB J.D. McKissic
  • No. 37 CB Rachad Wildgoose
  • No. 41 RB Jonathan Williams
  • No. 51 LB David Mayo
  • No. 55 LB Cole Holcomb
  • No. 75 G Chris Paul
  • No. 85 TE Cole Turner

Holcomb [foot], McKissic [neck] and Mayo [hamstring] are out with injuries. This is the third consecutive game Holcomb will miss. Mayo, his top backup, will miss his second consecutive game. McKissic is also out for the second straight week. The Commanders are playing it safe with McKissic.

In some good news, wide receiver Jahan Dotson is back after missing five games. Rookie tight end Cole Turner is inactive again, with Washington going with Logan Thomas, John Bates and fellow rookie Armani Rogers.

Here is the Eagles’ inactive list:

Commanders’ final injury report for Week 10 vs. Eagles

Cole Holcomb is out against the Eagles, but Jahan Dotson will play.

The final injury report for Week 10 is out and contains some good and bad news for the Washington Commanders.

Let’s start with the good news: Rookie wide receiver Jahan Dotson will play Monday night. The first-round pick has missed the past five games with a hamstring injury. Dotson had four touchdowns in the first four games of his NFL career before he was sidelined. His four touchdown receptions still lead the team.

Now to the bad news.

Starting linebacker Cole Holcomb [foot] and his backup David Mayo [hamstring] are out. This is the third consecutive game Holcomb will miss, and veteran Jon Bostic will see plenty of time in his absence. Bostic played well against the Vikings last week, but the Eagles present a different type of test.

Running back J.D. McKissic will miss his second consecutive game with a neck injury. McKissic suffered a neck injury in last season’s Monday night win over the Seattle Seahawks and missed the remainder of the season.

Center Tyler Larsen was limited with a back injury and is questionable. Left guard Andrew Norwell was added to the injury report Saturday with a groin injury and is also questionable.

For the Eagles, cornerback Avonte Maddox will miss the game. Outside of Maddox, the Eagles enter Monday night in good shape.

Commanders vs. Eagles: 2nd injury report for Week 10

Jahan Dotson looks ready for Monday.

The Washington Commanders were back on the practice field Friday in preparation for Monday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. And, the Commanders received some good injury news.

Rookie wide receiver Jahan Dotson was a full participant for the first time since Week 4. Dotson injured his hamstring in the Week 4 loss to the Dallas Cowboys and missed the last five games.

Dotson has yet to play in a game with quarterback Taylor Heinicke. In his first four NFL games, Dotson was leading all rookies with four touchdown receptions.

While Washington had good news on Dotson, linebacker Cole Holcomb remains out with a foot injury. The Commanders have one more practice on Saturday, but it sounds like Holcomb could miss his third consecutive game.

Center Tyler Larsen went from limited to DNP Friday. Larsen, who is Washington’s fourth center of the season, began this year on the PUP list. Larsen is dealing with a back injury.

Running back J.D. McKissic remains sidelined with a neck injury, while linebacker David Mayo was limited again with a hamstring issue.

The Eagles remain almost fully healthy heading into Monday night.

Commanders vs. Eagles: 1st injury report for Week 10

Jahan Dotson was back on a limited basis, while Cole Holcomb remains out.

The Washington Commanders returned to the practice field a day later this week. Washington’s Week 10 game against the Philadelphia Eagles is on Monday night, pushing the practice schedule back this week.

Some familiar names were on the injury report for the Commanders. Linebacker Cole Holcomb remains out with a foot injury. Head coach Ron Rivera spoke about Holcomb’s injury after practice Thursday.

“Well, Cole’s going through obviously a lot of the rehab stuff that we have him doing,” Rivera said. “I know they had him running on the AltarG [anti-gravity treadmill] and in the pool. We’ll see how he feels tomorrow morning, and we’ll go from there with Cole.”

Running back J.D. McKissic remains sidelined with a neck injury. Rivera didn’t speak of McKissic’s injury Thursday, but last week he said it was precautionary due to McKissic’s injury late last season.

In some good news, rookie wide receiver Jahan Dotson [hamstring] was back on the practice field. Dotson has missed five consecutive games. Before his injury, he led all rookies with four touchdown receptions.

Center Tyler Larsen [back] and linebacker David Mayo [hamstring] were also limited on Thursday.

The Eagles had two cornerbacks missed practice, including slot corner Avonte Maddox. Philadelphia’s injury situation continues to look promising.

Commanders midseason grades: Linebacker

What grade would you give Washington’s linebackers thus far in 2022?

Heading into the 2022 NFL offseason, anyone who followed the Washington Commanders would tell you that adding a linebacker was a priority.

In 2021, third-year linebacker Cole Holcomb played almost every snap for Washington and did an adequate job. No one would consider Holcomb a star, but he was certainly a capable player who was still improving.

The Commanders had also spent a 2021 first-round pick on Jamin Davis. Washington envisioned Davis as a middle linebacker, but the team quickly realized the speedy rookie was better on the outside. Still, Davis struggled as a rookie and some were mistakingly already calling him a bust.

So, in the offseason, head coach Ron Rivera decided to move Holcomb to the middle and play Davis strictly on the outside. The coaches felt Holcomb had improved to the point he was ready to be the full-time “mike” linebacker and that Davis would naturally improve in his second season.

The Commanders didn’t spend on another linebacker because the team only uses two linebackers on the field because they spent a lot of time in nickel.

So, how have Holcomb and Davis performed in 2022? Let’s give Washington’s linebackers a midseason review, followed by a grade.

Holcomb has missed the last two games with a foot injury. It does appear he is close to a return. In his first season as the full-time middle linebacker, Holcomb has played well. Washington’s defensive line has been outstanding and Holcomb is off to the best start of his career.

How good is Holcomb? Only Washington knows the answer to that question, but overall, the former North Carolina Tar Heel has adjusted well to playing inside.

As for Davis, his season didn’t begin on the best note. Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio openly criticized him after Week 1. However, since that time, Davis has continued to improve week after week.

In last week’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Davis had, arguably, the best game of his young NFL career. Davis didn’t fill up the stat sheet, but if you go back and watch that game, he was everywhere. He was impacting the passing game and the run game. He was quick to diagnose his run fits and was playing instead of reacting. He’s been playing this way for several weeks, but really stood out vs. Minnesota.

Considering how Washington’s linebackers were viewed ahead of the season and how they’ve played through the first half of the season, the position has been a pleasant surprise for the Commanders.

Grade: B-
