Auburn walks it off in series opener with Georgia

Auburn trailed Georgia by three runs heading to the 9th inning, but a walk-off walk in the 11th inning sealed the come-from-behind win.

It took 11 innings, but it all came down to a walk in the Auburn Tigers series-opening 7-6 win over the Georgia Bulldogs.

“I didn’t ask for a lot this week,” head coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] said following the game. “I just asked for these guys to kind of connect with one another. I asked the guys what it really means to stay in the fight and to keep punching back. We thought we took more punches than we really delivered last week. That ninth is a good symbol of hanging around and staying in there.”

[autotag]Tommy Vail[/autotag] got the start for Auburn. He pitched five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking two batters and striking out seven. [autotag]Will Cannon[/autotag] ended up with the win, pitching the final three innings. He allowed one run off of one hit, walked two batters and struck out three.

Kolten Smith got the start for Georgia. He tossed 3.1 innings, allowing one run off of two hits. Kyle Greenler ended up with the loss for the Bulldogs in 0.2 innings of work, allowing one run off of two hits and walking two batters, one of them being [autotag]Carter Wright[/autotag] to end the game.

Georgia took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] got the scoring started for Auburn in the bottom of that inning with a double that scored [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag]. [autotag]Connor Green[/autotag] tacked on another run for the Tigers in the fifth inning with a solo shot to left field.

Georgia added another run in the top of the sixth inning. [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag] hit a solo home run in the bottom of that inning to bring the Tigers within one.

The Bulldogs added on two more runs in the top of the ninth inning to extend their lead to three. Auburn refused to go down quietly, however. Ware doubled down the right-field line to score Foster and [autotag]Kason Howell[/autotag]. [autotag]Justin Kirby[/autotag] reached on an error that allowed Ware to score.

The next run came in the bottom of the 11th inning when Wright was walked,  allowing Irish to score.

Auburn halts late rally to defeat South Alabama

Kason Howell’s three-hit, four RBI performance helps Auburn erase a three-game losing streak.

After suffering a three-game sweep to No. 3 Arkansas to open the SEC slate, Auburn needed to find confidence ahead of this weekend’s series with rival Georgia.

On Tuesday, they found it.

Auburn gained comfort by scoring five runs in the middle innings to help them hold off a comeback attempt by South Alabama and ultimately earn the 6-5 win over the Jaguars at Riverwalk Stadium in downtown Montgomery.

The Tigers and Jaguars battled to a scoreless tie through 2 1/2 innings before [autotag]Kason Howell[/autotag] put his squad on the board, 3-0,  with a three-run blast to left field that scored [autotag]Carter Wright[/autotag] and [autotag]Brody Wortham[/autotag]. Howell would also contribute to his team’s lead again in the 4th inning on an RBI single.

“I’m kind of simplifying things and just trying to get a good pitch to hit, be on time and let the results take care of themself,” Howell said following Auburn’s win over South Alabama. “That’s really where I’m at right now and it’s working out. Hopefully, I can just be consistent with it and keep it going.”

Wright scored Auburn’s other run in the 4th inning on an RBI single that scored Justin Kirby to put the Tigers ahead, 4-0.

The game would then hit another lull before South Alabama’s Colson Lawrence hit his first of two home runs of the game in the top of the 7th inning. His first smack was a two-run blast that cut into Auburn’s lead, 5-2.

The Tigers got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when a foul out by [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] was deep enough to score Howell from third base, making the game, 6-2.

Auburn found themselves in trouble in the 8th inning, as the Jaguars attempted to take a late lead with two outs. Lawrence repeated his 7th-inning performance by hitting yet another two-run blast, and Cole Ketzner crushed a solo shot in the next at-bat to trim Auburn’s lead to 6-5.

[autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag] was able to slam the door on South Alabama by sitting down the Jaguars in order to close the game and solidify the win.

Howell paced the Tigers with three hits and four RBI, while Kirby and Wright each recorded multiple hits. Starter [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag] got the win for Auburn by striking out two batters and allowing a hit in 4.0 innings of work. Isbell earned the save by tossing a perfect 9th inning.

Auburn improves to 14-6-1, and will now shift their focus to the Georgia Bulldogs, who come into town for a three-game series beginning Thursday night at 6 p.m. CT at Plainsman Park. The Bulldogs defeated Georgia State on Tuesday night, 8-3, behind a three-hit night by center fielder Ben Anderson.

Auburn baseball flashback: the last time Auburn played Southeastern Louisiana

Auburn’s journey to Omaha in 2022 began with a 19-7 thrashing of Southeastern Louisiana in game one of the Auburn Regional.

Auburn baseball’s road to Omaha began at Plainsman Park against Southeastern Louisiana in game one of the Auburn regional.

The Tigers exploded for 11 runs in the first inning, with six of those runs coming off of home runs by switch-hitting [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag], who hit two home runs in the inning, one from each side of the plate.

The large lead in the 1st inning allowed Auburn to cruise to a 19-7 victory. Auburn ended the game with seven home runs. Foster ended the game with three home runs, [autotag]Nate LaRue[/autotag] recorded two, and [autotag]Sonny DiChiara[/autotag] and [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag] each hit one. [autotag]Trace Bright[/autotag] recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts in 5.0 innings on the mound.

The Tigers would keep their offensive firepower going over the final two games of the regional by defeating Florida State and UCLA by a combined score of 32-11. Auburn would then win the Corvallis Super Regional, and competed in the College World Series for the second time in three seasons.

This weekend, Southeastern Louisiana returns to Plainsman Park for a three-game set and hopes to get revenge on the Tigers.

Before the Tigers and Lions tussle in Plainsman Park, here’s a look back at Auburn’s 19-7 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in the 2022 Auburn regional.

Auburn baseball vs. Southeastern Louisiana: How to watch/listen to this weekend’s series

Auburn gears up for a rematch with Southeastern Louisiana for the final nonconference weekend series of the season.

The No. 25 Auburn Tigers host Southeastern Louisiana for a three-game series this weekend at Plainsman Park, and if you’re wondering how you can watch the action live, you’ve come to the right place.

In the final nonconference weekend series of the season, Auburn baseball will host Southeastern Louisiana, a participant in the Auburn regional one season ago. In the game, Auburn scored 11 first-inning runs which paved the way for a 19-7 win in game one of the 2022 Auburn regional. [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] hit two home runs in the inning, one from each side of the plate, totaling six RBI.

The Lions will no doubt enter the weekend with hopes of getting rid of the bad taste of last season’s regional opener. They will do that by bringing an aggressive base-running attack with them to Plainsman Park.

“It’s good. We haven’t played a team that’s going to run this much and present some different challenges standing in the box the way they have,” head coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] said of Southeastern Louisiana. “It’s been four weekends, and this will be the fourth different opponent that will teach us a lot.”

Ahead of this weekend’s series, here’s a look at everything you need to know including a broadcast guide, a projected lineup, and a projected pitching matchup.

Auburn baseball smothers UAB behind three-hit effort from Bryson Ware

Ware picked up three of Auburn’s four hits as the Tigers pick up their fifth straight win.

In a game where both offenses were at a premium, it was Auburn that stood tall over the visiting UAB Blazers.

Both teams combined to record just seven base hits, with Auburn taking credit for four of them. Behind a one-hit effort from Auburn pitching, and a three-hit performance by Bryson Ware, Auburn earned its fifth straight win by defeating UAB, 4-1 on Tuesday at Plainsman Park.

Bryson Ware recorded three of Auburn’s four hits and scored half of Auburn’s runs on a two-run home run in the bottom of the 4th inning. Cole Foster was the other Tiger who recorded a hit in a tough game that featured eight UAB pitchers.

The game got off to a slow start, as neither team could produce more than one hit through the first three innings. Auburn’s [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag] led off the 2nd inning with a single up the middle, but could not advance past third base to give Auburn a lead.

[autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] became Auburn’s second base runner in the 4th inning on a ground-ball blunder by UAB shortstop Gavin Lewis Jr. Two pitches later, Ware sent a moonshot to the video board in left-center field to put the Tigers on the board, 2-0. The home run was his team-leading seventh of the season.

Auburn starter [autotag]Tommy Vail[/autotag] carried the momentum from his team’s newfound lead by striking out the side in the ensuing inning to improve his count to seven strikeouts through four innings.

Auburn’s third run of the game scored on a misread by UAB third baseman Ben Abernathy. [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] hit a pop-up toward third base, and the baseball changed directions multiple times, causing Abernathy to misjudge the ball on its descent. When the ball landed, [autotag]Brody Moss[/autotag] scored from second base, and the play was officially ruled a double and gave Auburn a 3-0 lead in the 5th inning.

Vail’s no-hit bid stayed intact through 4.2 innings but came with endangerment. With two down in the 5th inning, Vail walked Gavin Lewis and John Marc Mullins. At that point, [autotag]Chase Allsup[/autotag] was called upon to cap the inning. He did so on one pitch, which was a ground out by Ben Abernathy to Cole Foster at shortstop. Vail’s night ended with eight strikeouts, two walks, and no hits through 4.2 innings of work.

In Auburn’s half of the 6th inning, Ware recorded his third hit of the night by hitting a triple to center field and was sent home on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Peirce one at-bat later to extend Auburn’s lead to 4-0.

It took seven full innings, but UAB was finally able to secure their first hit. To lead off the 8th inning, UAB’s Tyler Waugh hit a single through the left side to erase the combined no-hitter performed by Vail and Allsup. The Blazers were unable to cash the hit in for a run, as they left a runner stranded at first base to end the inning.

The Blazers scored their first and only run with two outs in the 9th inning. Christian Hall singled up the middle to score John Marc Mullins from third to cut Auburn’s deficit to 4-1. The Blazers brought the tying run up to the plate, but Allsup struck out the final batter to end the game.

Auburn improves to 10-1-1 while UAB falls to 4-8.

Auburn baseball will have a quick turnaround as they hit the road on Wednesday to face Jax State at Jim Case Stadium in Jacksonville. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT and can be seen on ESPN+.

Season Preview: Auburn Baseball’s top returning hitters from 2022 season

Here’s a look at the top sluggers that return from Auburn Baseball’s 2022 College World Series roster.

The Auburn Tigers are set to open the 2023 season on Friday, Feb. 17 against Indiana at Plainsman Park. While we count down the days, here’s a brief look at what to expect this season.

The first chapter of Auburn Wire’s baseball season previews will take a look at Auburn’s returning hitters from last season’s College World Series roster.

Auburn returns plenty of contributors to last season’s lineup and will see a lot of new faces at the plate as well. However, the caliber of bats that have since moved on to the professional ranks leaves a few questions for Auburn to answer.

The biggest void on this season’s roster is [autotag]Sonny DiChiara[/autotag], who was drafted 148th overall by the Los Angeles Angels and was immediately delegated to Double-A Rocket City. In his lone season on the Plains, DiChiara smashed 22 home runs and was responsible for 59 RBI.

Auburn will also be without [autotag]Blake Rambusch[/autotag], [autotag]Brooks Carlson[/autotag], and [autotag]Brody Moore[/autotag], who finished the season in the top-five of batting average last season behind DiChiara.

There are some familiar faces, however, who will return to the Auburn lineup this season including [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag], [autotag]Cam Hill[/autotag], [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag], and [autotag]Kason Howell[/autotag], who all hit over .250 last season.

Here’s a look at the top returning bats to Auburn’s roster ahead of the 2023 season, based on last season’s batting average.

Auburn Baseball earns first fall win thanks to epic comeback

Auburn scored six runs in the final frame to defeat Louisiana Tech on Saturday at Plainsman Park

Fresh off of their second trip to the College World Series in three tries, Auburn Baseball is picking up where they left off.

The Tigers hosted Louisiana Tech for a fall exhibition game on Saturday and needed an epic comeback to finish off the Bulldogs. Newcomer [autotag]Brody Wortham[/autotag] hit the go-ahead home run in the 10th inning to cap the six-run comeback, which ultimately lifted Auburn to a 12-11 win.

The home run was the second hit of the day for Wortham, who doubled in two runs earlier in the inning to begin the comeback.

Pitching was key in overcoming the deficit as well. Auburn relievers [autotag]Tanner Bauman[/autotag], [autotag]John Armstrong[/autotag], [autotag]Tommy Vail[/autotag] and [autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag] did not allow a single Bulldog to reach base over the final five frames. Vail struck out all three batters faced in his one inning of relief work.

Joining Wortham in collecting two hits on the day were [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag], [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag], [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag], and [autotag]Gavin Miller[/autotag].

Auburn’s next fall exhibition game will take place on Friday, Oct. 18, when they welcome archrival Alabama, led by former [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] assistant Brad Bohannon, to Plainsman Park. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.

Thompson receives aid in form of former CWS championship coaches

After dropping a tough game to Ole Miss on Saturday, Auburn head coach Butch Thompson called on two former championship coaches for assistance.

Prior to Auburn’s trip to Oregon State to face the Beavers in the Corvallis Super Regional, head coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] told local media that his team’s goal is “national championship or bust.”

The statement was made in hopes to raise the expectations of the program from “happy to be here” to true contenders for a national title.

However, after dropping the first game of the 2022 College World Series on Saturday to Ole Miss, Thompson knew that his team was behind the 8-ball since only four teams in 40 years have ever won the College World Series after dropping their first game.

But, Thompson knew that he could not allow his team to give up. So he called on former Oregon State head coach Pat Casey, as well as former South Carolina head coach Ray Tanner, who were two of those coaches who led their teams to national championships after losing their first game in Omaha.

Lucky for Thompson, those two men were happy and willing to lend a helping hand. That helped, as Auburn was able to defeat Stanford on Monday afternoon, winning their first game in Omaha since 1997, and, more importantly, keeping their title hopes alive.

“Both of those men got back and gave me paragraphs, taking me through the journey with their team,” said Thompson following Auburn’s 6-2 win over Stanford on Monday. “Those men, it was like those men were excited to hear from me, and they were like, “yeah, this is what we did, this is what we talked about, this became our focus.” I’m just hunting for every inch that I can for our program.”

The Tigers’ win over the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament field was fueled by scoring six runs over the 6th and 7th innings, which included a three-run double by [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag], who was battling illness throughout the game. Foster’s grit is just a small sample of Auburn’s personality, and what could lead them to more wins at the College World Series.

“The man, the woman, or the team that will never quit, they have a chance,” says Thompson. “I just want us to fight, and I want us to attack. That’s all you can ask for, the score will take care of itself.”

Auburn’s next opportunity to extend their season comes Tuesday night against Arkansas. The Razorbacks dropped a game to Ole Miss on Tuesday night, moving them to the loser’s bracket. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CDT, and can be seen on ESPN.

PHOTO GALLERY: Auburn outlasts Stanford to advance in College World Series

Relive Auburn’s 6-2 win over Stanford on Monday afternoon with the gallery below:

Despite the temperature reaching the high-90s in Omaha, Nebraska on Monday afternoon, the Auburn bats needed a little time to heat up.

But when they finally got going, it was hard to slow down the Tiger offense.

Down 2-0 heading to the sixth inning, Auburn broke through to score six runs on six hits to defeat Stanford, 6-2 to advance in the College World Series, earning their first win in Omaha since 1997.

[autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] helped Auburn take the lead on a three-run double in the sixth inning, which complimented a bases-loaded walk to [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag] just two at-bats prior.

In the 7th, [autotag]Brody Moore[/autotag] scored [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag] on a sacrifice fly, and Peirce earned his 2nd RBI of the game on a double to score [autotag]Blake Rambusch[/autotag], extending the Tiger lead.

Auburn will now await the winner of Ole Miss-Arkansas. The game will be played on Tuesday at 5 p.m. CDT, and can be seen on ESPN.

Tiger stay afloat with victory over Stanford Cardinal

The Tigers live to play another game.

They certainly had to fight for it, but the Auburn Tigers will get the chance to continue fighting in the College World Series.

Auburn knocked off the Stanford Cardinal 6-2 on Monday to continue its CWS bid into at least Tuesday. The Tigers are operating in danger with a loss already in the double-elimination tournament, and they’ll have to play one of either Arkansas or Ole Miss in their next game.

For the first five innings, it was all Cardinal.

Stanford drove in a run in the first inning when junior Brett Barrera hit a double to center field, allowing outfielder Brock Jones to score. The next run from the Cardinal came in the top of the second when infielder Adam Crampton hit a double down the line to bring sophomore Tommy Troy in.

It seemed as if Auburn’s bats were invisible for most of the game, but its defense kept the score at 2-0 until the top of the sixth — it was time for the Tigers to do some damage.

Auburn only needed one inning to take the lead, scoring four runs to go up 4-2. A [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag] walk with bases loaded sent freshman [autotag]Mike Bello[/autotag] home to kick off proceedings, and a double from infielder [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] sent the three remaining runners to the plate. Auburn would tack on two more in the top of the seventh on RBIs from Peirce and senior [autotag]Brody Moore[/autotag]. The score would remain that way for the rest of the game and the Tigers would send the Cardinal packing as they stay alive in the CWS.

It’s likely Auburn will be hoping to play Arkansas on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT, as the other possible opponent, Ole Miss, has already defeated the Tigers in this tournament.
