Bease is back: Bills sign Cole Beasley to practice squad

Cole Beasley, Buffalo #Bills wide receiver, as expected:

Plot twist: Cole Beasley is signing with the Buffalo Bills, not Odell Beckham Jr.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Beasley is signing a deal to join Buffalo’s practice squad.

The expectation is that Beasley, 33, will likely be called up from the taxi squad on upcoming games days, which is what the team has done with John Brown. Brown, like Beasley, formerly played with the Bills early in quarterback Josh Allen’s career and was brought back to provide depth.

Beasley was more recently in Buffalo than Brown. Beasley caught tons of attention in 2021 relating to the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols and he became a bit of a lightning rod for attention because of that.

After an All-Pro year in 2020, his production dropped off a year ago. However, general manager Brandon Beane long said he expected Beasley to return to the Bills in 2022 but the wideout ended up asking to be moved and he was released in March.

From there, Beasley did have some negative comments relating to the Bills–Most of which were done on his social media account on Twitter like his COVID commenting.

Water all under the bridge now, it seems.

Beasley did not play with a team during training camp this past summer, opting to wait until the start of the regular season to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, after only two games, he went into retirement… until now.

Beasley caught 82 passes each of the past two seasons in Buffalo. That trailed only Stefon Diggs’ totals.

There was hope Isaiah McKenzie would slide right into Beasley’s spot this season, but that transition hasn’t been as seamless has most had hoped. In a full time No. 2 receiver role, Gabe Davis also has left a bit to be desired in 2022.

Over the past several months, there had been connections with Beckham. But the Bills are actually the second team to decide to sign another receiver instead of Beckham after his free-agent visit with the team. The Dallas Cowboys signed TY Hilton on Monday.

Most think those decisions for Dallas and Buffalo relate to their ability to immediately play while Beckham’s status is in question due to his return from an ACL injury.

Check back at Bills Wire throughout for the latest updates on Beasley’s potential status for Buffalo’s upcoming Week 15 matchup with the Miami Dolphins (8-5).

Bucs make it official, terminate contract of retiring WR Cole Beasley

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have terminated the practice squad contract of retiring wide receiver Cole Beasley

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have terminated the practice squad contract of veteran wide receiver Cole Beasley, the team announced Thursday.

Beasley announced earlier this week (through his agent) his intentions to retire after nearly 11 seasons in the NFL.

In two games with the Bucs this year, Beasley caught four passes for 17 yards. He was signed to the practice squad to help bolster Tampa Bay’s receiver depth due to injuries, and was promoted to the active roster for each of those two games.

Former Cowboys WR Cole Beasley retiring after 2 games with Buccaneers

The 33-year-old finishes his 11-year NFL career 18th in Cowboys history in receiving yards; he’ll spend more time with family. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Cole Beasley’s latest stint with an NFL team looks like it will turn out to be his last. The former Cowboys receiver and fan favorite signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prior to the team’s Week 3 game; now he’s announcing his retirement from the NFL before Week 5.

NFL Network insiders Mike Garafolo and Tom Pelissero reported the news midday Wednesday after hearing from Beasley’s agent. “He is ready to be with his family after playing in 11 seasons and it’s time to be a full-time dad and husband,” Justin Turner told the network.

Beasley was brought on in Tampa at the urging of quarterback Tom Brady amid a plague of injuries at the club’s receiver position. Beasley, in his 11th pro season, caught four passes for 17 yards over his two games with the Buccaneers.

The 33-year-old will retire with 554 receptions over 151 game appearances with Dallas, Buffalo, and Tampa Bay. He amassed 5,726 receiving yards and scored 34 receiving touchdowns.

He played for Dallas from 2012 to 2018 and is currently 18th on the Cowboys’ list of all-time leading receivers with 3,271 yards. (Both Michael Gallup and CeeDee Lamb could pass him this season.) Beasley’s 23 receiving touchdowns in a Cowboys uniform place him 14th in franchise history.

Former Bills WR Cole Beasley retires soon after signing with Bucs

Cole Beasley has called it a career:

Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Cole Beasley has retired from the NFL.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Beasley has decided that it’s time to look at life after football despite only recently coming back to the league.

Beasley, 33, joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 20. Amid a rash of injuries to their receiver room, the team tapped Beasley for help, however, he only recorded four catches in two games.

Prior to joining the Bucs, Beasley played in Buffalo from 2019 to 2021. He was still under contract with the Bills through this current NFL season, however, Beasley requested the Bills trade him.

When that did not occur, the team granted his release in March 17 despite the Bills front office insisting they’d still want him to stay.

On the field, Beasley’s three years in western New York were successful. He earned All-Pro honors in 2020 and helped with the development quarterback Josh Allen saw over that time.

Beasley’s time with Buffalo will be more remembered for his off-field opinions.

The reciever became one of the more outspoken NFL players against COVID-19 protocols in the latter stages of his Bills career. Because of that, he became a lightning rod for attention.

So much so that upon his departure from the Bills, Beasley made comments such as he “won’t regret leaving.”

Beasley finished his career in Buffalo making 231 catches for 2,438 yards and 11 touchdowns for the team. Overall in his 10 years in the league, Beasley had 554 grabs for 5,726 yards and 34 touchdowns.

Bucs WR Cole Beasley retires

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Cole Beasley has decided to retire

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Cole Beasley has decided to retire, his agent told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo.

Beasley was signed to the Bucs’ practice squad earlier this season as the team dealt with multiple injuries and absences at wide receiver, and was promoted to the active roster for each of Tampa Bay’s last two games.

He was targeted five times by Tom Brady in those two games, catching four passes for 17 yards.

Beasley, 33, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys out of SMU back in 2012. He finishes his 11-year NFL career with 554 receptions, 5,726 yards and 34 touchdowns.

Bucs add WR Cole Beasley to active roster for Sunday’s game vs. Chiefs

For the second straight week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are promoting wide receiver Cole Beasley from the practice squad to the active roster

For the second straight week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are promoting wide receiver Cole Beasley from the practice squad to the active roster.

Beasley will provide the Bucs’ some added depth and experience at wide receiver for Sunday night’s home matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In his first game with the Bucs last week, Beasley caught three passes from Tom Brady, but for just 12 yards.

Mike Evans is back from his one-game suspension Sunday, but Chris Godwin and Julio Jones are both game-time decisions, leaving the Bucs with plenty of question marks at wide receiver.

Report: Giants continue to pursue WR Cole Beasley

Cole Beasley may be a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad, but that’s not preventing the New York Giants from pursuing him.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed wide receiver Cole Beasley to their practice squad last week and then activated him for their Week 3 game against the Green Bay Packers. He went on to catch three passes (four targets) for 12 yards.

On Monday, Beasley will revert back to the Buccaneers’ practice squad, making him available to 31 other team should they desire to sign him to their active roster. And should he desire to move.

That means Beasley remains in play for the New York Giants, who have strongly pursued him and continue to do so, reports Pro Football Talk.

The Giants have been the most persistent, we’re told. But the offers have been at or near the league minimum. Beasley, who has earned nearly $50 million in his career, doesn’t need to play for whatever he can get.

Although he’s on the practice squad, Beasley can sign with any other team — except the next opponent of the Buccaneers in any given week. If/when a team like the Giants sufficiently sweetens the pot, Beasley could choose to sign there.

The Giants aren’t exactly enamored with their current group of receivers, including Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney, who each have their own set of issues.

The team is currently being led by a group that consists of Sterling Shepard, who is coming off of an Achilles tear, and Richie James Jr. and David Sills. Not exactly world beaters.

Plus, both general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll are intimately familiar with Beasley from their time in Buffalo. In fact, they are so close with Beasley that Tom Brady even called Daboll to thank him for failing to sign the receiver.

Speaking of Brady, we’re told he actually called Giants coach Brian Daboll (a former Patriots assistant) to thank Daboll for not being able to close the deal with Beasley. Brady was busting Daboll’s chops. But the deeper point could be that Brady has big plans for Beasley.

The problem facing the Giants is their lack of available salary cap space. They can ill afford to offer Beasley anything substantial and it’s not like they can sell him on Super Bowl hopes.

Still, Schoen and Daboll seem committed to the pursuit of Beasley and will likely continue calling him. Whether or not they ultimately lure him to East Rutherford remains to be seen.

Bucs promote WR Cole Beasley to active roster for Sunday’s game vs. Packers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have new wide receiver Cole Beasley dressed and ready for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers

The Tampa Buccaneers have promoted wide receiver Cole Beasley and offensive lineman John Molchon from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.

Beasley was signed to the practice squad earlier this week, as they continue to deal with multiple injuries at wide receiver, as well as the one-game suspension for Mike Evans that will keep him out of Sunday’s game.

The former Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys pass-catcher hasn’t had much practice time with his new team, but the Bucs might have to rely on his previous experience elsewhere in the league to make him effective Sunday, should they have to call on him.

Molchon gives the Bucs some added depth along the offensive line, should they lose another blocker to injury.

New Bucs WR Cole Beasley talks about sliding into Tom Brady’s DMs

Cole Beasley admits that he slid into the GOAT’s DMs, and now he’s a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are dangerously thin at wide receiver as they prepare for their home opener in Week 3, so they’ve called in some reinforcements.

With Mike Evans serving a one-game suspension, and both Chris Godwin and Julio Jones having missed Week 2 due to injury, the Bucs signed veteran Cole Beasley to the practice squad this week.

Beasley can be elevated from the practice squad for up to three games without having to use a spot on the 53-man active roster.

After his first practice with the team on Wednesday, Beasley admitted that he slid into Bucs quarterback Tom Brady’s DMs, trying to advertise his services as a reliable target for the GOAT (via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times):

If Godwin and Jones are unable to suit up again this week, Beasley could end up providing a boost for a Bucs receiving corps that struggled with drops in last week’s 20-10 win over the New Orleans Saints.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got their first look at newly acquired wide receiver Cole Beasley on Wednesday, and the veteran pass-catcher wasted little time making some memorable moments.

Beasley’s first punt return rep was a wild one, as he fumbled the kick, scooped it back up, but then lost his helmet as he was hit by a running teammate (via Pewter Report’s Matt Matera).

The former Buffalo Bills wide receiver was signed to the Bucs’ practice squad Wednesday, as they deal with multiple injuries at wide receiver, as well as Mike Evans’ suspension for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers.
