ESPN analyst names Bills’ Josh Allen No. 1 QB in NFL (video)

ESPN analyst names #Bills’ Josh Allen No. 1 QB in NFL (video):

The Bills Josh Allen has been winning over his teammates and fans with his play on the field in his first several seasons.

Allen’s position play has been garnering the respect and attention of those outside the Bills organization and fan base as well.

Count ESPN analyst Sam Acho among them. The former NFL linebacker and now ESPN analyst shared who his top-five quarterbacks in the NFL right now are while appearing on “First Take” this past week.

He had Josh Allen at the top of his list, with Justin Herbert, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, and Joe Burrow following him.

“So, when I go to my top five quarterbacks right now, I’m going based on who do I want to lead my team based off of what we’ve seen from them,” Acho said. “And so, for me, number one, I’m going with Josh Allen. You saw what he did in the playoffs. Nine touchdowns, zero interceptions, and oh, by the way, he ran for 134 yards. That’s why he’s my number one. I’m talking about based off the last even few years, he’s gotten better every single year.”

I recently met the football-pro-turned-analyst and published author at the Super Bowl Breakfast in Los Angeles. And it’s important to point out that, while the omission of Patrick Mahomes from his top five QB list caused some knee-jerk Twitter backlash, Acho carries notable IQ distinctions in his background that should raise some interest and lend further credence to his analysis.

The former LB was featured in a 2016 AOL article that highlighted “Six NFL Players with Genius IQs” and was featured alongside another former Bill Ryan Fitzpatrick (Acho spent a month with Buffalo in August of 2019.)

He also was named the 2012 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by Diverse: Issues In Higher Education and was named as one of the 10 smartest players in the NFL by Bleacher Report.

So he may be on to something with his list!

PFF: Bills’ Josh Allen among highest graded QBs over the last two seasons

Bills QB Josh Allen has again found himself among the NFL’s biggest names following the conclusion of the 2021 season.

In his fourth year out of Wyoming, he was ranked as one of the three highest graded Quarterbacks over the last two seasons per Pro Football Focus.

Allen (92.6) ranked third in the league during those past two seasons behind only Aaron Rodgers (94.8) and Tom Brady (94.6):

With Brady retired in Florida, that leaves Rodgers and Allen as the number one and two highest-ranked active players at the quarterback position going into the 2022 season.

Buffalo made it to the brink of what would have been another AFC Championship berth in the playoffs thanks in big part to Allen’s play.

The young QB’s emergence over the past two seasons has put both his pre-NFL draft scouting report as well as the order in which other players at his position were selected before him in the 2018 draft under the microscope.

In 2021, Allen would finish the year with 4,407 passing yards, 36 TD’s, and a 60.7 QBR. This came after a 2020 campaign that included 4,544 passing yards, 37 TD’s, and a 76.6 QBR.

With Brady out of the league and an offseason to think about his team’s early departure from the playoffs, once more at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead, it will be interesting to see what a very motivated Allen can accomplish next season.

Andre Robers takes more shots at Jets

After not being offered a contract following a career season, ex-Jet Andre Roberts pulls no punches when comparing the Bills and Jets.

Former Jets wide receiver and kick returner Andre Roberts still has some hard feelings toward the organization.

Roberts is still upset that the Jets did not attempt to re-sign him following one of the best seasons of his career. He hopped on the 17 Weeks Podcast with fellow Bills WR Cole Beasley’s and didn’t pull any punches about Gang Green.

“It’s so much better than being in NJ,” he said of playing for Buffalo. “The organization is better from top to bottom,” he said.

With Roberts returning kicks, the Bills lead the league in kick return average. Roberts is third in the NFL in that category. Buffalo is averaging 8.5 yards more per kick return than the Jets.

It’s not just returning kicks either, as Roberts is the ninth highest-graded punt returner in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus.

In his first and only season with the Jets, Roberts led the NFL in kick return yards and was a first-team All-Pro selection for the first time in his career. He was selected to his first Pro Bowl and was named to the AP All-Pro first team.

Roberts racked up 324 punt return yards and 1,174 kick return yards — both career bests. In Week 16 against the Green Bay Packers, Roberts returned a kick 99 yards for a touchdown and posted a career-high 215 total return yards in his best showing of the season.

It’s no mistake to say the Jets miss Roberts returning kicks. Letting him go was one of the more head-scratching decisions that Mike Maccagnan made this past offseason when the Jets former general manager was still in charge.

New York has not seen enough production from Trenton Cannon, Vyncint Smith or Ty Montgomery to make an impact in the return game this year.

Roberts also shined the light on the culture and power structure between the Jets and Bills. He pointed out that Bills head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane actually speak to one another, where it was apparent that Maccagnan and Todd Bowles rarely did. Instead, they both directly reported to CEO Christopher Johnson.

The disparity in the two teams can be seen in their records this year. The Bills are 7-3, while the Jets are 3-7. Roberts is correct and instead of merely labeling him as bitter, the entire Jets organization might want to look in the mirror before they allow another Roberts to slip through the cracks.
