What Kirby Smart said about Colbie Young’s arrest

What Georgia football coach Kirby Smart said after wide receiver Colbie Young was arrested on Oct. 8

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Colbie Young, a Miami transfer, was arrested on Tuesday morning. Athens Clarke-County police arrested Young on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on an unborn child. Young was released Tuesday afternoon on $1,000 in bonds.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart spoke with the media following Young’s arrest in the middle of Georgia’s season.

“I know you guys want to know about Colbie (Young) and want to ask about it, but it’s a pending legal matter and I don’t have any answers right now,” said Smart on Tuesday evening.

Young’s legal matter certainly puts his status in doubt for the Georgia versus Mississippi State game. Young has 11 receptions for 149 yards and two touchdowns this season and is Georgia’s fourth-leading receiver.

“He’s (Colbie Young) been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter is resolved,” said Smart. “We can’t really comment any further on the specifics of it, but had a good meeting with him this morning,” said Smart on Wednesday.

The bigger story after Young’s arrest is Georgia’s troubling history of arrests in recent months and years. Many of Georgia’s arrests have been traffic violations. However, UGA already dismissed wide receiver Rara Thomas earlier this year after he had a domestic violence arrest.

Kirby Smart emphasizes that Georgia educates its players on legal responsibilities.

“We educate. We bring in speakers. It’s one of probably the most critical things we do,” said Smart. “Over the history of my nine years being here, it’s probably the most spoke on thing we have.”

Many are questioning if this is enough. Georgia is not the only college football program with off-the-field issues, but the Bulldogs are probably the most high profile school with these issues regularly surfacing in recent years.

“I’ll be honest with you, in my years of coaching, it’s probably been the hardest thing to deal with when you deal with players and some of the decisions,” said Smart, who has dismissed several players over the years following off-the-field incidents.

“I don’t mean this in Colbie’s case because I don’t know the details of that. I don’t know everything involved in that. But it’s a very sensitive matter, a tough thing to deal with,” continued Smart. “It’s unfortunate.”

If Young misses time, then Georgia will rely on wide receivers London Humphreys and Anthony Evans to play more snaps.

Current and former Bulldog each named as spring standouts

247Sports’ Josh Pate named an incoming Georgia Bulldogs transfer as well as one left in the winter as standouts at their respective programs through early practices.

In a review of spring intel from various different programs around the country, 247Sports’ Josh Pate named an incoming Georgia transfer as well as one transferred to a Big Ten school as standouts at their respective programs through early practices.

On the Georgia side, Pate highlighted Colbie Young, the wide receiver transfer from Miami. “Colbie Young has been really good at wide receiver this spring. They’ll be able to count on him. He can be a go-to option for them,” said Pate. Young has garnered incessant praise this spring from numerous other sources and drawn comparisons to former Bulldogs star George Pickens as well as fellow former Miami transfer Lawrence Cager.

Pate also praised former Georgia cornerback A.J. Harris, now in Happy Valley at Penn State. “Georgia cornerback transfer A.J. Harris (has) drawn really, really good reviews. That’s who you should be focused on,” said Pate.

Harris was a five-star recruit in the class of 2023 and transferred after a season in Athens. He could be in position to take on a major role for a Penn State team that is seeking to replace cornerbacks Kalen King and Daequan Hardy, both of whom are expected to be drafted this April.

Georgia transfer turning heads early in spring practice

Georgia Bulldogs transfer WR is making plays in spring practice

The Georgia Bulldogs added multiple receivers to their team via the transfer portal this offseason, and early reports indicate one has already made his presence felt this spring.

According to On3, Miami transfer Colbie Young has drawn a great deal of positive feedback. Young caught multiple passes, including a touchdown, during a recent practice. Young, who played three years with the Hurricanes, recorded 47 catches for 563 yards and five touchdowns last season.

Young is listed at 6 feet, 5 inches and 215 pounds, and he has drawn comparisons to another well-known former Bulldog who transferred from Miami. Lawrence Cager was nearly the same size and shares similar skills as Young. Georgia has lacked a true jump ball threat at receiver the past few years since Cager left. If he continues to progress, Young could fit that role perfectly.

Highlights: Incoming UGA football transfer WR Colbie Young

6-foot-5 wide receiver Miami transfer wide receiver Colbie Young brings a large catch radius to Georgia.

Georgia football earned a commitment from top transfer wide receiver Colbie Young this offseason. Young is the No. 8 wide receiver in the transfer portal and the No. 38 transfer in the country, per 247Sports.

The former Miami Hurricanes wide receiver has excellent size and is tough to tackle after the catch. Young is good at making contested catches and has the ability to high-point the football. Young, who is entering his fourth season of college football in 2024, will be a security blanket for quarterback Carson Beck.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pound wide receiver should compete for a starting spot right away in the Georgia offense. Young could help replace Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the Georgia passing attack. Young will take some time to get up to speed in Georgia’s scheme.

Let’s take a look back at Colbie Young’s career highlights and statistics:

The Georgia Bulldogs added a commitment from Miami Hurricanes transfer Colbie Young. The junior will have at least one season of eligibility remaining at Georgia.

This is the second consecutive offseason Georgia has acquired two productive wide receivers via the transfer portal. Young joins Vanderbilt transfer London Humphreys as Georgia’s two transfer wide receiver commitments.

Young has great size and has been very productive for the Hurricanes. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound wide receiver hauled in 47 receptions for 563 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns in 2023. Young has over 800 career receiving yards and 10 career receiving touchdowns.

247Sports ranks Young as the nation’s No. 36 player and the No. 6 wide receiver in the transfer portal. Young announced his commitment to Georgia football via social media:

Young is considered a four-star recruit as a transfer.

Decision coming soon for Penn State transfer wide receiver target?

Penn State is hoping to get some big transfer news from one of the top receivers in the transfer portal as soon as today.

Penn State is working furiously to recruit talent at the wide receiver position out of the transfer portal this year, and the Nittany Lions are hoping a recent visit will pay off for one target. The Penn State coaching staff could find out whether or not the effort paid off soon enough.

Wide receiver Colbie Young, from the Miami Hurricanes, is reportedly saying he is approaching a decision date fairly quickly. According to 247Sports, that decision could come within the next couple of days (story requires a subscription).

If that is the case, then we are officially on watch.

Young made a visit to Penn State on Saturday, following a trip earlier in the week to Georgia. Wisconsin is another school believed to be in the mix, but a decision coming soon likely means the Badgers could be out of the running, but it is worth keeping on the radar right now.

Young has been on Penn State’s radar for a while as he is a player who went to Maimi from the JUCO ranks from Lackawanna College, a program Penn State has a great history with. Penn State did recruit Young from Lackawanna College previously, but no offer was extended prior to his move to Miami.

The 6′-5″, 215-pound wide receiver is one of the top receivers currently in the transfer portal and would immediately add to the wide receiver room upon his arrival if Penn State manages to receive his commitment. Young is coming off a 2023 season with 47 receptions for 563 yards and 5 touchdowns for Miami.

Penn State is also awaiting a transfer decision from Ohio State wide receiver Julian Fleming. The Nittany Lions are trending to be the favorite to secure the commitment out of the transfer portal for the Buckeye receiver. Adding Fleming and Young to the offense would be immediate upgrades for an offense desperately looking to create some explosiveness with quarterback Drew Allar and new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki in 2024.
