Ed Orgeron’s son Parker joins Miami football staff

Miami football added another Orgeron family member to its staff this week.

[autotag]Ed Orgeron[/autotag] may be out of coaching for now, but his sons are keeping busy. The Orgeron family’s connection with Miami football continues to grow as [autotag]Parker Orgeron[/autotag] is set to join the staff as a defensive backs assistant.

Parker is now the second of former LSU football coach Ed Orgeron’s sons to take a job with the Hurricanes. [autotag]Cody Orgeron[/autotag] was already with the program, serving as a QB analyst.

Both Parker and Cody played for Miami defensive coordinator Lance Guidry when Guidry was the head coach at McNeese.

Prior to Miami, Parker Orgeron was at Baylor as a quality control coach on former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda’s staff.

As for Ed Orgeron, he has yet to take another job since leaving LSU in 2021, but he made an appearance at Tulane last week as the Green Wave began their first spring practice under new head coach Jon Sumrall.

Orgeron spoke to the team after practice.

LSU are heavy favorites over McNeese State on Saturday night

The LSU Tigers will be massive favorites according to Tipico Sportsbook.

In the home opener at Tigers Stadium on Saturday night, the LSU Tigers are going to be massive favorites in this game. The team is looking to even their record with a win over an in-state FCS foe. McNeese State is also looking to even their record, but it is a tall task for the Cowboys.

The head coach Frank Wilson is a former assistant at LSU, and his quarterback is the son of the LSU head coach. Can Cody Orgeron one-up dad in Baton Rouge? To do that, he will have to overcome a lot despite LSU missing several starters this week.

What to watch for when LSU hosts McNeese State on Saturday

A look at the 10 areas to watch when the LSU Tigers take on McNeese State on Saturday night in Death Valley.

The LSU Tigers didn’t have a great showing in the season opener last Saturday, but it is a new week as they host McNeese State of the Southland Conference. The home opener of the season is ahead of Central Michigan next week.

The in-state competition comes in with an 0-1 record under former LSU assistant coach Frank Wilson. He spent 2005-07 under Ed Orgeron at Ole Miss in his first gig at the collegiate level. Wilson was with LSU from 2010-15 before leaving to take the head coaching position at UT-San Antonio. This is his second season with McNeese.

There is also the storyline of Ed Orgeron facing his son Cody, who is the starting quarterback for the Cowboys. Will his defense take it easy on the coaches’ son? Probably not, but Cody would also love to get the win over his dad’s team.

With so many issues arising last week against UCLA, we highlight 10 areas of the team to watch on Saturday.

McNeese vs LSU: Quarterback tale of the tape

A look at the two quarterbacks for the McNeese-LSU game on Saturday.

With the UCLA game now firmly in the rearview mirror, focus shifts to the LSU Tigers getting their first win of the season. On Saturday night in Death Valley, they will host in-state foe McNeese State. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. CT kickoff, both teams are looking for their first win of the early season.

While LSU fell on the road to the Bruins 38-27, McNeese dropped their home opener to West Florida 42-36. In the preview of the upcoming game, we look at the tale of the tape for the two starting quarterbacks.

Quarterback Tale of the Tape

Rob Ferguson-USA TODAY Sports

How do the two quarterbacks measure up?

Cody Orgeron vs Max Johnson
6-1 Ht 6-5
192 Wt 219
Senior Class Sophomore
31 Comp 26
47 Att 46
66.0 Comp % 56.5
367 Yards 330
7.8 Yards/Att 7.2
2 TDs 3
0 INTs 1

The two quarterbacks definitely threw their fair share in the openers for both teams. Orgeron was slightly more accurate of a passer. He will be tested going up against the LSU defense, he will need to be on his A-game as they have formidable pass rushers and guys at the second level who can take the ball away.

LSU will likely win big in this game, but if the McNeese quarterback can take advantage of some of the miscommunication mishaps then he could make a game of it. After seeing some of the action in week one, never say never, but this should be a game that LSU wins convincingly.

A deeper dive into Max Johnson’s game:

Against UCLA you could see that Johnson was rattled with the amount of pressure applied by the Bruins defense. When he was kept clean in the pocket, Johnson completed 22 of 32 passes on 34 dropbacks. He showed poise and looked like the passer we expected. When he felt pressure, it was all bad.

Under pressure against UCLA, Johnson completed just four of 14 attempts with an interception. Those passes went for just 61 yards. Protecting the young quarterback could be an issue this year based on how the offensive line has looked over the last season plus.

He was able to beat the Bruins defense consistently when being blitzed. He was 18 of 29 for 246 yards with two touchdowns. They did get their lone interception when blitzing Johnson. The noticeable thing for Johnson was processing speed. He needs to speed up that decision to pull the trigger. The first opportunity will come on Saturday, that is one area to watch.

Ed Orgeron’s team to face off with his son Cody on Saturday

LSU set to face off with Ed Orgeron’s son Cody and McNeese State on Saturday night.

After the LSU Tigers lost their season opener to UCLA on Saturday, focus shifts back to Baton Rouge. The team now prepares for an in-state class against McNeese State. Their quarterback is someone that head coach Ed Orgeron knows very well, his son Cody.

This will be McNeese’s second game since the 2019 season, they did not play a year ago due to the pandemic. Last week the Cowboys lost a close game to West Florida, 42-36. In that game, the younger Orgeron passed for 367 yards while completing 31 of 47 passes with two touchdowns.

In his career, Cody Orgeron has thrown for 4,967 yards with 38 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He will have his biggest test on Saturday facing his dad’s team. Most expect a massive blowout in this game that isn’t expected to be too competitive for the Tigers.

In September of 2019, Orgeron faced a Power Five team in Oklahoma State. They lost 56-14 while Cody threw two interceptions in that game. Now he will be tasked with trying to move the ball against the LSU defense that was embarrassed on Saturday night in Pasadena.

Despite playing in the same state, this is only the second time that the Cowboys and Tigers will face off in a game. Back in 2010, they met in Baton Rouge, the Tigers won that contest 32-10.

The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. CT kickoff at Tiger Stadium.
