Cody Durden confident he made big statement with short-notice submission win at UFC Fight Night 242

Cody Durden feels he made s big statement with his submission win over Matt Schnell at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 242.

LAS VEGAS – From recovering from a night of drinking to getting a wild submission win, it’s safe to say [autotag]Cody Durden[/autotag] had quite the week.

The flyweight veteran filled in with just four days’ notice to fight Matt Schnell at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 242. Schnell’s original opponent, Alessandro Costa, suffered a shoulder injury, prompting the need of Durden’s services.

“I didn’t have much preparation,” Durden said at the UFC Fight Night 242 post-fight press conference. “I had a few drinks on Sunday, probably more than I should. I laid in bed all day on Monday, and I went back to the gym and sparred five rounds on Tuesday. I shoot my shot on Twitter and I don’t know what the f*ck I’m doing here, but I’m here, you know what I mean. Four day notice. Me and my wife just fly out here within four or five hours of accepting the fight.”

Despite the late-notice call, Durden (17-6-1 MMA, 6-4-1 UFC) showed up and showed out. He had a crazy brawl in the first round against Schnell and then quickly submitted him with a nasty anaconda choke in the second.

“Custom made” believes his performance sent a big message to the UFC and the flyweight division.

“I’m here to stay, I’m game,” Durden said. “If I can do that on four day notice, I can do a lot more when I put my full-time and effort to being the best.”

UFC Fight Night 242 video: Cody Durden sends Matt Schnell into retirement with slick finish on four days’ notice

Cody Durden sent Matt Schnell into retirement after scoring an impressive submission on four days’ notice at UFC Fight Night 242.

[autotag]Cody Durden[/autotag] picked up one of the biggest wins of his octagon tenure Saturday when he tapped out Matt Schnell in highlight-reel fashion at UFC Fight Night 242.

After taking the fight as a replacement on just four days’ notice, Durden (17-6-1 MMA, 6-4-1 UFC) went toe-to-toe with Schnell (16-9 MMA, 6-7 UFC) from the very first bell. The pair traded hard shots for several minutes with some grappling exchanges mixed in, and then it went to a second round.

That’s where Durden turned the tables on a Schnell takedown attempt and impressively rolled into a slick anaconda choke. After a brief struggle, Schnell tapped at the 0:29 mark of Round 2 in the bantamweight bout at the UFC Apex.

Check out the replay of the final sequence below (via X):

After the fight, the UFC broadcast team announced Schnell has retired from MMA competition and left his gloves in the center of the octagon.

Matt Schnell, UFC Fight Night 242

Durden reveled in his big moment.

“Without risk there’s no reward,” Durden said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “Four days’ notice. Me and my wife went out Sunday night and I had a little bit too much to drink. But I backed it up. I came out here and I backed it up.”

Matt Schnell vs. Cody Durden prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC Fight Night 242

How will stepping up on a few days’ notice affect Cody Durden against Matt Schnell at UFC Fight Night 242?

[autotag]Matt Schnell[/autotag] and [autotag]Cody Durden[/autotag] meet Saturday on the main card of UFC Fight Night 242 at UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 6-0
UFC main cards, 2024: 76-61-3

Matt Schnell vs. Cody Durden UFC Fight Night 242 preview

Schnell (16-8 MMA, 6-6 UFC) is in search of his first win since July 2022, which was a submission win over Su Mudaerji. Since then, Schnell has been finished by Matheus Nicolau and Steve Erceg. He finds himself fighting a fight-week replacement. … Stepping up on just a few days’ notice, Durden (16-6-1 MMA, 5-4-1 UFC) will also hunt to snap a two-fight skid in which he was finished in both bouts. Prior to his recent setbacks, Durden ripped off a four-fight winning streak, picking up wins over JP Buys, Carlos mota, Charles Johnson and Jake Hadley.

Matt Schnell vs. Cody Durden UFC Fight Night 242 expert pick, prediction

Filling out the main card is an impromptu bantamweight bout between Schnell and Durden.

Schnell was initially slated to face Alessandro Costa, who was forced to withdraw on fight week.

Stepping in for Costa is Durden, a fighter who also finds himself on a two-fight skid heading into this event. Massive respect to Durden for gambling on himself like this, but I’m admittedly surprised to see him installed as the favorite (much less such a large one).

Don’t get me wrong: Durden has made some undeniable improvements to his striking game since moving shop to American Top Team, but the native of Georgia hasn’t exactly shown the one-shot knockout power that’s traditionally troubled Schnell.

But on the other side of that stylistic kryptonite coin, Schnell does have the opportunistic submission game that’s stung Durden before. For that reason, I can’t help but side with Schnell to get it done by submission in Round 1.

Matt Schnell vs. Cody Durden UFC Fight Night 242 odds

The oddsmakers and the public are heavily favoring the shorter-notice fighter, listing Durden (-333) and Schnell (+250) via FanDuel.

Matt Schnell vs. Cody Durden UFC Fight Night 242 start time, how to watch

As the second bout on the main card, Schnell and Durden are expected to walk out to the cage at approximately 7:35 p.m. ET (4:35 p.m. PT). The fight will air on ESPN+.

Alessandro Costa out against Matt Schnell, who meets replacement Cody Durden at UFC Fight Night 242

Alessandro Costa suffered a shoulder injury, but all is not lost at UFC Fight Night 242.

(Editor’s note: A previous version of this story only reported on Costa being injured and out.)

UFC Fight Night 242 has lost one of its best bouts on paper, but all is not lost.

A flyweight scrap between [autotag]Alessandro Costa[/autotag] and [autotag]Matt Schnell[/autotag] has been pulled from Saturday’s event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas after Costa (14-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) suffered a shoulder injury. Stepping in to fight Schnell on just five days’ will be [autotag]Cody Durden[/autotag] (16-6-1 MMA, 5-4-1 UFC).

Schnell (16-8 MMA, 6-6 UFC) first broke the news online Monday night of Costa’s injury, and MMA Junkie later confirmed the injury with Costa on Tuesday. Durden confirmed to MMA Junkie that he is replacing Costa after sharing a post on X.

https://twitter.com/cody_durden/status/1831056424904077356

Costa revealed to MMA Junkie that he will need physical therapy to rehabilitate his shoulder and hopes to be able to return in a few weeks.

Costa was hoping to build momentum off his TKO win over Kevin Borjas back in May. The Brazilian, who trains with Diego Lopes in Puebla, Mexico, is 2-1 in his past three bouts, with the lone defeat coming against former UFC title challenger Steve Erceg.

Schnell will look to snap a two-fight skid. He was knocked out in his most recent bout in March against Erceg. Durden also is coming off back-to-back losses after he was TKO’d by Bruno Gustavo da Silva on July 20.

With the change, here is the updated UFC Fight Night 242 card:

Cody Durden vs. Bruno Silva prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC on ESPN 60

Former flyweight training partners clash on the UFC on ESPN 60 main card in Las Vegas. Will Cody Durden or Bruno Silva emerge victorious?

[autotag]Cody Durden[/autotag] and [autotag]Bruno Silva[/autotag] meet Saturday on the main card of UFC on ESPN 60 from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Last event: 4-1-1
UFC main cards, 2024: 58-52-3

Cody Durden vs. Bruno Silva UFC on ESPN 60 preview

Durden (16-5-1 MMA, 5-3-1 UFC) competes for the first time in 2024, looking to bounce back from a submission loss to Tagir Ulanbekov at UFC 296 in December. The result ended a four-fight winning streak over JP Buys, Carlos Mota, Charles Johnson and Jake Hadley. … Silva (13-5-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) will also step into the octagon for the first time this year as he looks to make it four in a row. On his run of three-straight stoppages, he defeated Buys, Victor Rodriguez and Tyson Nam.

Cody Durden vs. Bruno Silva UFC on ESPN 60 expert pick, prediction

Filling out the main card is a flyweight showdown between Durden and Silva.

Even though I initially came into this matchup leaning toward Silva, I came away feeling differently after watching the tape.

I still believe shots like the front kick will serve Silva well in this contest, but I don’t know if he has the wrestling dictation or the submission skills to reliably tax Durden’s approach.

I also believe the smaller octagon will help Durden much more than it does Silva if said submission threats aren’t present.

I’m sure Silva accepted this fight with his former training partner because he believes he can beat him, but fights don’t necessarily play out the same way as they do in training.

It’s a reluctant pick, but I’ll take Durden to grind out a unanimous decision win.

Cody Durden vs. Bruno Silva UFC on ESPN 60 odds

Despite the oddsmakers technically opening the American as the favorite, public money has come in on the Brazilian and pushed this fight to a near pick’em, listing Durden -105 and Silva -115 via FanDuel.

Cody Durden vs. Bruno Silva UFC on ESPN 60 start time, how to watch

As the third fight on the main card, Durden and Silva are expected to make their walks to the cage at approximately 9:05 p.m. ET (6:05 p.m. local time in Las Vegas). The fight airs on ESPN and streams live on ESPN+.
