The UFC stays in its home base this week, and middleweights are atop the promotion’s final card of the year.

UFC Fight Night 216 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, recent title challenger [autotag]Jared Cannonier[/autotag] (15-6 MMA, 8-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] (25-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC). The fight nearly is a pick’em at Tipico Sportsbook. Cannonier is the slight favorite at -115; the comeback on Strickland is -105. Our 10 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have Cannonier with a narrow 6-4 picks lead.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Damir Ismagulov[/autotag] (24-1 MMA, 5-0 UFC) meets [autotag]Arman Tsarukyan[/autotag] (18-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) at lightweight. Tsarukyan is a -190 betting favorite and a near-unanimous pick at 9-1.

Also on the main card, our lone unanimous pick is [autotag]Amir Albazi[/autotag] (15-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) in his flyweight bout against [autotag]Alessandro Costa[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC). Albazi is the biggest favorite on the entire card at -450.

[autotag]Alex Caceres[/autotag] (19-13 MMA, 14-11 UFC) takes on [autotag]Julian Erosa[/autotag] (28-9 MMA, 6-5 UFC) in a featherweight fight. Erosa is a mild favorite at -170 and has a 7-3 lead in the picks.

[autotag]Drew Dober[/autotag] (25-11 MMA, 11-7 UFC) and [autotag]Bobby Green[/autotag] (29-13-1 MMA, 10-8-1 UFC) clash in a fight between longtime UFC lightweights. Dober is a -150 favorite, but he has just a slim 6-4 lead in the picks.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Cody Brundage[/autotag] (8-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) takes on [autotag]Michal Oleksiejczuk[/autotag] (17-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) at middleweight. Oleksiejczuk is a big -280 favorite, but three of our pickers are taking Brundage in an upset.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Cannonier (62 percent), Tsarukyan (66 percent), Albazi (85 percent), Erosa (55 percent), Dober (66 percent) and Oleksiejczuk (71 percent) are the choices.

Cody Brundage explains how Dustin Jacoby offered guidance, confidence to beat Michal Oleksiejczuk

Cody Brundage received advice from his main training partner to help him prep for UFC Fight Night 216.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Cody Brundage[/autotag] received advice from his main training partner to help him prep for UFC Fight Night 216.

Brundage (8-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) faces [autotag]Michal Oleksiejczuk[/autotag] (17-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) in Saturday’s main card opener at the UFC Apex. The card streams on ESPN+.

With Brundage’s training partner [autotag]Dustin Jacoby[/autotag] having beat Oleksiejczuk by unanimous decision at UFC 272 in March, Brundage knows what he has to do to get the job done.

“Dustin’s been a huge addition to my camp,” Brundage told MMA Junkie and other reporters at UFC Fight Night 216 media day on Wednesday. “Obviously he’s helped me get a lot better in striking and those kind of things, but just confidence wise, I know how much he believes in me. He’s been in there with the guy, and me and him train everyday and he’s like, ‘Listen, you just go be yourself, and you can get the win.’ And that confidence is huge.”

[lawrence-related id=2605364,2605346]

Riding a two-fight winning streak with back-to-back finishes, Brundage is an underdog for his fourth straight fight. But the 28-year-old sees it as a good career trajectory, where he’s fighting good-level competition.

“Michal is a beast, and I got to see him live in person when he fought Dustin,” Brundage said. “He’s super durable, he’s super tough, he never stops coming forward, and everything he throws is to take your head off, so he’s really not too much different than some of the guys I fought other than he’s really tough and has great pressure. I just think he has a few holes in his game that I can exploit. Some of the things he’s not the best that are things that I’m really good at. So on paper it’s a good matchup for me.”

Michal Oleksiejczuk plans to stop Cody Brundage’s takedowns, ‘destroy his face’ at UFC Fight Night 216

Michal Oleksiejczuk is confident Cody Brundage won’t be able to get him to the ground at UFC Fight Night 216.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Michal Oleksiejczuk[/autotag] is confident [autotag]Cody Brundage[/autotag] won’t be able to get him to the ground at UFC Fight Night 216.

Winner of three of his past four, Oleksiejczuk (17-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) faces Brundage (8-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in Saturday’s main card opener at the UFC Apex. The card streams on ESPN+.

Coming off a first-round TKO of Sam Alvey in August, Oleksiejczuk will look to punish Brundage with his striking.

“Cody is a very good grappler,” Oleksiejczuk told MMA Junkie and other reporters at UFC Fight Night 216 media day on Wednesday. “He’s similar like Duraev. I think that Cody won’t take me down and (submit me). I must (show) takedown defense and destroy his face with my hard punches.”

[lawrence-related id=2605346,2605343]

Oleksiejczuk was originally scheduled to face Albert Duraev before being replaced by Brundage. The 27-year-old Polish fighter sees similarities in both matchups, which means he didn’t have to make too many changes.

“I think it’s a good change, because Cody is similar like Duraev,” Oleksiejczuk said. “I trained a lot of takedown defense, submission defense – this is a good change for me. I am ready.”

He continued, “My preparation for this fight was very similar.”

UFC on ESPN 39 post-event facts: Ricky Turcios’ rough striking numbers enter record books

Ricky Turcios landed just 11.5 percent of his strike attempts at UFC on ESPN 39, putting him in the record books for the wrong reasons.

After International Fight Week took over the MMA world, UFC on ESPN 39 on Saturday proved to be something of a hangover card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

[autotag]Rafael Fiziev[/autotag] (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) put a highlight on the end of a long night of fights, though, when he scored a fifth-round knockout of former UFC champ [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] (32-14 MMA, 20-12 UFC) to extend his winning streak in the lightweight division to six consecutive fights.
