The Panthers have been dominating opponents this season. While Coastal Carolina is far better than its previous opponents, it should not be a nearly a full-touchdown underdog.

Both teams will look to run the ball heavily and this will limit the possessions, which makes a large spread less likely to cover.

BET UNDER 62.5 (-110).

Neither Coastal Carolina nor Georgia State have been giving up many points on defense this season. While both squads have solid offenses, their strengths are the run game and this will shorten the game much like a matchup of service academies.

COASTAL CAROLINA +7 (-105) hasn’t shown a lot of success on defense lately, but McCall playing despite the portal move will give this team a big boost. The Chanticleers have a tremendous offense, and they’ll be able to hang with the Pirates.

This will be a fun game to watch between Ahlers and McCall, but it will also be nerve-wracking if you’re a fan of either side, or betting either side. If you can get this at 7 1/2, even better.

Over/Under

OVER 63.5 (-111) is a big number, but it’s worth it.

The Over is 4-0 in the last 4 December games for CCU, and 10-4 in the previous 14 non-conference tilts.

Appalachian State has played a tougher schedule than Coastal Carolina, but in an odd fashion. ASU played current No. 15 North Carolina and Texas A&M early. In October, the Mountaineers played 2 FCS programs, lost at Texas State (as 19-point favorites Oct. 8) and defeated Georgia State (Oct. 19 after a bye week). In that game against GSU, Appalachian State benefited from a plus-3 in turnovers and had multiple short-field scoring drives.

Both ASU and CCU are solid in the red zone on offense, but figure the Chanticleers as being the better defense in forcing field-goal attempts.

This midweek night game spells the Mountaineers’ 2nd road games since Sept. 10, and things could be wonky early. A misfire seems plausible enough, and there is a sliver of value to COASTAL CAROLINA (+125).

Against the spread

Peg the ML play as the best side in this one. PASS.

Over/Under

Both teams are similar in many respects. For the purposes of pegging a wager, we can focus on their success in moving the ball. The Mountaineers have gained 459.6 yards per game (24th FBS), and the Chanticleers have pounded out 435.0 YPG (36th).

STAY AWAY. If I had to, I’d lean Under 58.5 (-115).

The Chanticleers can score in bunches. Their defense has been spotty. Meaning you do not know how many points they will give up near the end of this game.

For this reason, I would stay away. If the Chanticleers want to assert themselves, they will wipe the floor with the Warhawks. If they just want to get out with a win, they should still cover, but not by much.

This is a risky play, so I would rather AVOID.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN +9.5 (-110) catching more than a field goal in this game is a gift. Take advantage. This Eagles team can move the ball with QB Kyle Vantrease under center, scoring 39.8 PPG. The offense averages 509.5 total yards per game, too, ranking 9th in the country.

Coastal Carolina can also fill up the stat sheet, posting 37.0 PPG, so expect plenty of points and a close game.

Over/Under

The OVER 64.5 (-115) is a strong play.
