Analyzing Thursday’s Cleveland Guardians at San Diego Padres odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Cleveland Guardians (31-36) and San Diego Padres (33-34) meet Thursday in the finale of a 3-game set. First pitch at Petco Park is slated for 8:40 p.m. ET (MLB Network). Season series: San Diego leads 2-0

In a 14-game stretch prior to this series, Cleveland had scored 5.43 RPG while banging out a robust .811 OPS. However, in this series that has been San Diego wins of 5-0 Wednesday and 6-3 Tuesday, the Guardians have scored just 3 runs and only have 2 extra-base hits.

San Diego won 2 of 3 games at the Colorado Rockies over the weekend and is 5-1 over its last 6 games. The Padres have hit 13 home runs over that stretch, including 4 round-trippers in Wednesday’s victory.

Guardians at Padres picks and predictions

Prediction

Padres 5, Guardians 4

Moneyline

There is a lean toward playing the Padres and fading the Guardians when considering team performances versus underlying indicators. But the mound match-up, at least in the first 3 or 4 innings, does not line up with a San Diego play.

A Padres -120 or maybe -123 would make for some interest on that side, but otherwise… PASS.

Run line/Against the spread

The Friars are also a would-be lean on the run line, save for the above note on what Weathers does to the equation. Add in a Cleveland penchant for 1-run games (30 so far), and STEER CLEAR.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

San Diego is at its best against lefty pitching (.773 OPS). Both bullpens figure to be sailing along with surface ERA well out of whack with talent levels due to low batting averages on balls in play (Cleveland .259, San Diego .261).

Cleveland’s subpar offense has shown enough signs of life lately — before this series — to be worthy of a piece of an Over.

BACK THE OVER 8.5 (-108).

Cleveland Guardians at San Diego Padres odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Cleveland Guardians at San Diego Padres odds and lines, with expert MLB picks, predictions and best bets.

The Cleveland Guardians (31-35) and the San Diego Padres (32-34) play the middle contest of a 3-game series Wednesday at Petco Park. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Guardians vs. Padres odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: Padres lead 1-0

The Guardians lost 6-3 in the interleague series opener Tuesday against the Padres. Cleveland ranks 27th in the majors in runs scored (253), although it has been picking up the pace lately. The Guardians have managed 75 runs across the past 14 outings, or 5.36 runs per game (RPG). That’s quite a bit better than their overall average of 3.83 RPG this season.

Like Cleveland, San Diego has had trouble scoring runs, posting just 280 runs through 66 games. That’s the 2nd-lowest mark in the National League, ahead of only the lowly Washington Nationals. However, also like Cleveland, the Padres have picked up the pace lately, posting 32 runs across the past 5 games, or 6.4 RPG, well ahead of the season average of 4.24 RPG.

Guardians at Padres projected starters

RHP Aaron Civale vs. RHP Michael Wacha

Civale (2-1, 2.31 ERA) makes his 5th start. He has a 1.07 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9 and 5.8 K/9 in 23 1/3 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 5 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 K in a 10-3 home win vs. the Boston Red Sox last Thursday
  • 2023 road splits: 1-0, 0.00 ERA (12 IP, 0 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 7 K) with a .150 opponent batting average (OBA) in 2 starts

Wacha (6-2, 3.18 ERA) makes his 13th start. He has a 1.09 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9 and 8.5 K/9 in 68 innings.

  • Last start: Win, 6 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB, 7 K in a 10-3 home win vs. the Seattle Mariners last Wednesday
  • 2023 home splits: 4-2, 2.93 ERA (40 IP, 13 ER – 4 HR) with a .205 OBA in 7 starts

Guardians at Padres picks and predictions

Prediction

Padres 4, Guardians 2

Moneyline

The PADRES (-160) is a little on the pricey side, but worth it.

While the Guardians (+135) are 6-1 in the past 7 games following a loss, they’re just 4-10 in the past 14 interleague games and 5-11 in the previous 16 games on the road.

The Padres haven’t done that great in interleague games themselves, but San Diego has ripped off 4 wins in the last 5 games overall.

Run line/Against the spread

The PADRES -1.5 (+125) will take a little bit of a leap of faith. Playing San Diego to win by 2 or more runs has been a dicey proposition.

While it did cash in the series opener, San Diego is just 4-4 as a favorite on the run line in the last 8 games. Play it, but go lightly.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

UNDER 8 (-115) might be the best play on the board.

Civale has been untouchable on the road through 2 starts, although the sample size is obviously pretty small. For Wacha, he has been solid at home, and he doesn’t allow a lot of long balls, not that Cleveland hits many to begin with.

Cleveland Guardians at San Diego Padres odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Cleveland Guardians at San Diego Padres odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Cleveland Guardians (31-34) and San Diego Padres (31-34) meet Tuesday in the 1st game of a 3-game set in Southern California. First pitch at Petco Park is slated for 9:40 p.m. ET (MLB Network). Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Guardians vs. Padres odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets.

Season series: First meeting of 2023; Cleveland won last year’s series 3-1

Cleveland took 2 of 3 games from the Houston Astros over the weekend and is 9-5 over its last 14 games. The Guardians — 27th in scoring on the season with 3.85 runs per game — own a robust .811 OPS while scoring 5.43 RPG along that 14-game span.

San Diego won 2 of 3 games at the Colorado Rockies over the weekend, but failed to complete the sweep with a 5-4 loss Sunday. The Padres are 6-4 over their last 10 games and are 9 1/2 games back of the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks.

Guardians at Padres projected starters

RHP Tanner Bibee vs. RHP Joe Musgrove

Bibee (2-1, 3.05 ERA) makes his 9th start. He has a 1.13 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9 and 8.5 K/9 through 44 1/3 IP.

  • Is a 24-year-old rookie who has thus far benefited from a low 5.3% home runs/fly balls rate
  • Made it to the majors after just 15 1/13 IP at Triple-A and 148 IP total in the minors

Musgrove (3-2, 4.35 ERA) makes his 9th start as well. He has notched a 1.33 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9 and 9.2 K/9 through 41 1/3 IP.

  • Got off to a slow start this season but owns a 1.04 ERA and 0.98 WHIP across his last 3 starts
  • Has allowed just 2 HR over his last 33 IP

Guardians at Padres picks and predictions

Prediction

Padres 4, Guardians 3

Moneyline

The Padres have started to bang around some extra-base hits of late. The OPS production and, in some games, run production is lagging behind due in part to a .231 batting average on balls in play in high-leverage situations since June 2.

Musgrove filed a sub-3.00 ERA at home in 2021 and 2022, and he figures to give the Friars 6 good innings and get them in the neighborhood of a 65% win probability.

TAKE SAN DIEGO (-162).

Run line/Against the spread

No one plays more 1-run games than Cleveland who have played 30 (!) so far. PASS on getting San Diego by with a cushion unless the return is +135 or so.

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under

The Under has hit in 5 straight Cleveland-San Diego games in Southern California.

The forecast calls for a double-digit breeze helping the pitchers. The UNDER 7.5 (-105) is worth a partial-unit play.

Cleveland Guardians at San Diego Padres odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Cleveland Guardians at San Diego Padres odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Cleveland Guardians (65-56) and the San Diego Padres (68-57) wrap up a 2-game interleague series at Petco Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Guardians vs. Padres odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Guardians lead 2-1

The Guardians registered a 3-1 victory in the series opener Tuesday as the bullpen pitched 4 1/3-scoreless IP of relief to help the visitors to the win. Cleveland looks to continue its success against left-handed starting pitchers, going 6-1 in the past 7 tries against southpaws.

The Padres have really struggled scoring runs, totaling just 9 runs in the past five outings, going 2-3 during the span. Luckily the pitching staff has done a good job giving the team a chance, allowing 3 or fewer runs in 4 of the past 5 contests.

Guardians at Padres projected starters

RHP Cal Quantrill vs. LHP Blake Snell

Quantrill (9-5, 3.77 ERA) makes his 24th start. He has a 1.22 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9 and 5.8 K/9 in 136 IP.

  • Is 6-0 at home, but just 3-5 with a 4.34 ERA and .287 opponent batting average across 56 IP in 10 road starts.
  • Has posted a 4-2 record with a 2.98 ERA across 48 1/3 IP in 8 daytime starts.

Snell (5-6, 3.76 ERA) makes his 17th start. He has a 1.30 WHIP, 4.1 BB/9 and 12.0 K/9 in 83 2/3 IP.

  • Has managed a 3-4 with a 3.62 ERA and 64 K across 49 2/3 IP in 9 home starts this season.
  • Is enjoying his best month to date, going 2-1 with a sparkling 1.99 ERA across 22 2/3 IP in 4 starts in August.

Guardians at Padres picks and predictions

Prediction

Padres 3, Guardians 2

Money line

The PADRES (-175) are moderate favorites, and they’re a tad risky given the fact the offense has managed just 1.8 runs per game across the past 5 contests. This team has really missed the big bat of SS Fernando Tatis Jr., suspended earlier this month by MLB after testing positive for a banned substance.

Still, San Diego should do enough to scratch out a win and salvage a split.

Run line/Against the spread

The price for the GUARDIANS +1.5 (-150) is not out of line. Cleveland will get a good effort from Quantrill, and this team has been red-hot against left-handed starting pitchers. Don’t expect the Guardians to be fazed by the southpaw Snell. Still, I expect the Padres to do enough to grab the 1-run win.

Over/Under

The UNDER 7.5 (-110) cashed in Tuesday’s outing, and you can expect another similar result with runs at a premium.

The Under is 9-1-1 in the past 11 for Cleveland after a win, and 7-1 in the past 8 against teams with a winning overall record.

The Under has connected in 8 of the past 10 games overall for the Padres, while cashing in 4 of the past 5 at Petco.

The Cleveland Guardians (64-56) and the San Diego Padres (68-56) open a 2-game interleague set at Petco Park. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Guardians vs. Padres odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Series tied 1-1

The Guardians will be rested, as Sunday’s series finale against the Chicago White Sox was rained out, and the team had a scheduled day off Monday. They haven’t scored since Friday, too, after being shut out 2-0 by Chicago  Saturday.

The Padres have really struggled to score runs lately, going just 3-4 in the last 7 games while scoring 3 or fewer runs in 6 of those outings.

Guardians at Padres projected starters

RHP Aaron Civale vs. RHP Mike Clevenger

Civale (2-5, 5.63 ERA) makes his 15th start. He has a 1.34 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9 and 9.3 K/9 in 64 IP.

  • In 7 road starts this season he’s a dismal 0-2 with a 7.26 ERA and .305 opponent batting average in 31 IP
  • Has faced just 1 NL team this season, allowing 4 R (3 ER) in 4 IP in April 17 loss against the San Francisco Giants

Clevenger (4-4, 3.63 ERA) makes his 15th start and 16th appearance overall. He has a 1.21 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9 and 8.0 K/9 in 74 1/3 IP.

  • Has managed a 1-2 record in 5 home starts with a 2.96 ERA and 28 K in 27 1/3 IP

Guardians at Padres picks and predictions

Prediction

Padres 4, Guardians 2

Money line

The PADRES (-160) are worth a play as moderate favorites against the Guardians (+130). These teams squared off in Cleveland back in early May, splitting a double dip. The teams each scored 10 runs in the 2-game set, so expect to sweat before cashing your winner.

Run line/Against the spread

Take the PADRES -1.5 (+133) on the run line, but go lightly behind Clevenger. He’ll be amped up to face his former organization again, and the moribund San Diego offense should be able to scratch out a few runs against the very giving Civale.

Over/Under

The UNDER 10.5 (-102) is easily the best play on the board here.

The Under is 6-1 in Cleveland’s last 7 games against winning teams, while going 10-3-1 in the previous 14 games overall and 4-1-1 in the last 6 games on the road.

For the Padres, the Under has hit in 7 of the last 9 games overall, while going 6-2 in the last 8 against a right-handed starting pitcher.
